Show notes: On this episode I do an interview with Casey and Melissa Smith, the owners of the art store "Casey's Art Box". The shop is located out in Germantown, TN and combines retail space, gallery wall space, community gathering space, and Casey's art studio space. The dynamic duo are both former educators and have been together since the 1993 Cooper Young Festival. They've been married for almost 30 years. Casey Smith was born in Memphis and raised in Germantown. He has been creating art his whole life. His early years began at Ronnie Grisanti & Sons restaurant where he shared his love of murals. He spent 20 years teaching art to kindergarteners through high school seniors. Now Casey is ready to share his works and hopes to encourage other artists to go after their passion. Melissa Smith moved to Germantown at the beginning of her high school career at GHS. Not one to be far from her family, she attended Memphis State, but ended up graduating from the University of Memphis! While there she met and married Casey, being his number one visual art & music fan and (most importantly) best friend. After 27 years in elementary technology education, she is ready to encourage others to unleash their creative energies. The shop is open Mon-Sat, but are always standing by for any Sunday or after hours art emergencies that might arise! When you stop by be sure to ask about their customer loyalty program. I bought a few paint pens to try out.I also fill you in on some Mid-South Cartoonists Association news, including our upcoming art shows, zine deadline and monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza (April 1st), the MSCA Con Cards, and the Rogue's Gallery moving to Lootz Collectibles in Atoka for Free Comic Book Day.Plus I share some info on Comic Geek Speak's 20th anniversary celebration up in Reading, PA and recent Diamond acquisition by Alliance Entertainment. This week I dropped off a couple of my paintings for upcoming auctions/sales at Playhouse on the Square ("King Arthur/Spamalot") and Germantown Community Theatre ("Annie & Sandy"). Both were done in acrylics on canvas and for previous art shows at GCT. Proceeds to benefit the two theaters. I'll have new art to benefit my wallet at both theaters this year. Thanks to Casey and Melissa for talking toons with me. Hope this episode inspires you to check out their art store and create some art of your own!"Stay Tooned!"LINKS:Drawing Funny Podcast website – www.drawingfunny.comDrawing Funny Podcast on Spotify – www.podcasters.spotify.com/Drawing Funny Podcast on Apple – www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/drawing-funny/Mid-South Cartoonists Association/MSCA (Memphis, TN) – www.midsouthcartoonists.orgMy art website – www.linworkman.comCasey's Art Box (Germantown, TN) – www.caseysartbox.com/Garibaldi's Pizza (U of M) – www.garibaldispizza.comLootz Collectibles – www.lootzcollectibles.com/Rogue's Gallery Memphis – www.roguesgallerymemphis.com/Free Comic Book Day – www.freecomicbookday.com/DeSoto Arts Council  – www.desotoartscouncil.org/Comic Geek Speak/CGS podcast – www.comicgeekspeak.com/Comic Book Central podcast – www.comicbookcentral.net/Theme: “Silly Bank Heist” music by Steve Oxen.   News intro theme by David Fesliyan.©2020 Fesliyan Studios Inc. – music and sound effects used by permission. Please DO NOT add this audio content to the Youtube Content ID System. Show notes: On this episode I do a few interviews with some of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association members. I recorded at their March monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza- first I talked with That Katie Jones about The Rogue's Gallery at Centerpoint Toys & Games. and then I caught up with MSCA prez Kevin L. Williams about art goings on around the M-town, including a special "shocking" announcement of a new MSCA art show at Germantown Community Theatre. The MSCA meets at the Garibaldi's U of M location on the first Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm. The next gathering is on Tuesday, April 1st! The meet-ups are free and open to the public, but be sure to bring a few bucks to order off the menu and some art to show around. The following night after work I stopped by 901 Games to discuss Con Cards with the card game's creator (and longtime MSCA and NCS member), Greg Cravens. Greg can be found there on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm, and can be spotted at many local conventions selling Con Cards and teaching event attendees how to play the game. A new MSCA expansion deck is in the works! In the news section at the end of the episode I fill you in on some S/uper news about our long time friend Mike Norton's new "Krypto The Super-Dog" comic series and his recent Comic Geek Speak podcast appearance on episode 1997. Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton is set to debut on June 18, 2025 from DC Comics.I update you on my recent sketchcard gigs for RRParks Cards, and share some not so super news about me no longer working at 901 Comics. Yep, I was let go just a couple days after these interviews were recorded, so I'll be promoting 901 no more.Oh, speaking of sketchcards, don't forget that I have hand-drawn sketchcards for sale at The Cellar out on Bartlett Blvd. All cards are done in markers and are $35ea. More of my art is for sale at the DeSoto Arts Council in Hernando, MS.In this episode I also include a promo for the Comic Book Central podcast. The show's host Joe Stuber interviews actors, writers, producers, directors and others who have bring comic book properties to life on TV, Broadway, film, video games, live events and beyond!I honestly don't know what my next day job is going to be... so "Stay tooned!"LINKS:Drawing Funny Podcast website – www.drawingfunny.comDrawing Funny Podcast on Spotify – www.podcasters.spotify.com/Drawing Funny Podcast on Apple – www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/drawing-funny/Mid-South Cartoonists Association/MSCA (Memphis, TN) – www.midsouthcartoonists.orgMy art website – www.linworkman.comGaribaldi's Pizza (U of M) – www.garibaldispizza.comCenterpoint Toys & Games – www.facebook.com/CenterpointToys/Rogue's Gallery Memphis – www.roguesgallerymemphis.com/The Cellar Tabletop Games & Comics – www.comiccellaronline.com/Germantown Community Theatre – www.gctcomeplay.org/season-54-announcement/Playhouse On The Square  – www.playhouseonthesquare.org/Comic Geek Speak podcast – www.comicgeekspeak.com/Comic Book Central podcast – www.comicbookcentral.net/Memphis Public Libraries Comic Con 2025 – www.memphislibrary.org/events/mpl-comic-con-vendor-application/RRParks Cards – www.rrparkscards.com/Mike Norton – www.ihatemike.com/Greg Cravens – www.cravenscartoonist.com/#midsouthcartoonistsassociation#msca#memphistn#shairthelair#cgs#cartooning#supportlocal#linworkmanart#drawingfunnypodcast#drawingfunny#podcast#podperson#staytoonedTheme: “Silly Bank Heist” music by Steve Oxen.   News intro theme by David Fesliyan.©2020 Fesliyan Studios Inc. – music and sound effects used by permission. Please DO NOT add this audio content to the Youtube Content ID System. Show notes: On this 75th episode I sit down to talk to local comics creator Ryan Ladner about his recently released 1st issue of "Memphis VS Zombies". Ryan had a successful Kickstarter campaign for this new Thrill Comics zombie comic series set in the M-town. I caught up with him out at 901 Comics East for his second signing of the weekend. I was able to pick up my Kickstarter rewards in person at the comic shop, and talk toons with him for a bit. From the Thrill Comics website: "Memphis vs. Zombies is our thrilling flagship comic that blends Memphis charm with undead chaos. Follow Walter, B.B., and a cast of quirky characters as they navigate a zombie apocalypse in the heart of the Bluff City. Packed with humor, action, and heart, MvZ is a fun and fantastical adventure you won't want to miss!"In this episode's news section I discuss details on such events as our next MSCA dinner, Rogue's Gallery at Centerpoint Toys & Games in Millington, upcoming art shows around town, Trolls at the Botanic Gardens, local comic cons, submission details for our next "The Good, The Bad, and the Sketchy" zine, and more.I also wish Joe "S/tuberman" Stuber happy anniversary for 11 years of his "Comic Book Central" podcast, and the CGS crewa happy 20th anniversary of their show "Comic Geek Speak". They celebrate 20 years of podcasting on March 25th, and will have a free in-person celebration ("dysfunctional geeky family reunion") up in Reading, PA this March 29th (click HERE for details).Congrats to both shows, and I'm excited to finally make it to 75 episodes of "Drawing Funny"!“Stay tooned!”     LINKS:Drawing Funny Podcast website – www.drawingfunny.comDrawing Funny Podcast on Spotify – www.podcasters.spotify.com/Drawing Funny Podcast on Apple – www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/drawing-funny/Mid-South Cartoonists Association/MSCA (Memphis, TN) – www.midsouthcartoonists.orgMy art website – www.linworkman.com901 Comics East (Macon Road) – www.facebook.comGaribaldi's Pizza (U of M) – www.garibaldispizza.comCenterpoint Toys & Games – www.facebook.com/CenterpointToys/Rogue's Gallery Memphis –www.roguesgallerymemphis.com/DeSoto Arts Council – www.desotoartscouncil.org/Memphis Urban Sketchers (art group) –www.facebook.com/groups/160831813933182Thomas Dambo's TROLLS: Save the Humans (Memphis Botanic Gardens) – www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61562495777800Thomas Dambo's TROLLS (art site) – www.thomasdambo.com/Playhouse On The Square  – www.playhouseonthesquare.org/Comic Geek Speak/CGS podcast  – www.comicgeekspeak.com/Comic Book Central podcast  – www.comicbookcentral.net/Memphis Public Libraries Comic Con 2025 – www.memphislibrary.org/events/mpl-comic-con-vendor-application/#midsouthcartoonistsassociation#msca#memphistn#garibaldispizza#901comicseast#memphisvszombies#thrillcomics#shairthelair#cgs#trolls#cartooning#satartday#roguesgallery#memphispubliclibrariescomiccon#supportlocal#linworkmanart#drawingfunnypodcast#drawingfunny#podcast#podperson#staytoonedTheme: “Silly Bank Heist” music by Steve Oxen.   News intro theme by David Fesliyan.©2020 Fesliyan Studios Inc. – music and sound effects used by permission. Please DO NOT add this audio content to the Youtube Content ID System. Show notes: Of course on the day I posted my last episode the news broke about Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. filing a Chapter 11 petition for bankruptcy, and TikTok went dark just before I could finish this episode. Earlier this week I sat down with my business major and comics fangirl wife Nicki to talk about how this all could affect the comics industry in both negative and positive ways. We speculate on the possible upcoming imposed tariffs from the incoming administration and what that might mean for the printing industry- especially those that do self-publishing and/or Kickstarter campaigns for comics and books. Just how could it affect the already inflated price of comics..?! We also discuss my days of self-publishing and dealings with Diamond, as well as news about new Barnes & Noble brick & mortar stores coming, and what is #BookTok and how it is used by book fans and retailers. We exercise our First Amendment Rights quite a bit and express our opinions on how the upcoming TikTok ban (or sale) can/will affect book sales and other businesses- especially smaller businesses and content creators. I also yell at my cat Lex for being a jerk...it happens. The news was constantly changing for Diamond and TikTok as I was editing and publishing this episode. I don't have a lot of faith in our government, foreign governments, social media companies, or corporations in general to do the right thing, but and all we can do right now is wait and see how it all plays out. 2025 is definitely going to be some concerning times for comics creators, publishers, distributors, retailers, and us fans. “Stay tooned!” (and read a book!) Show notes: I've got some news and a few of my resolutions to share with you on this solo recorded episode. It's been cold and snowy around here in the mid-south, but the snow ended and the sun came out on Saturday in time for the grand opening of the new Bricks & Minifigs location in Hernando, MS. They had an amazing turnout at the event which included a free limited edition LEGO minifig, cotton candy, cookies, cake pops, caricatures, costumed characters, the DeSoto County Ghostbusters' Ecto-17 car, Muppets, and more! My wife Nicki and I were there with the MSCA's Kevin L. Williams and Greg Cravens -and City of Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson stopped by, too. (Kevin and Tammy Thorn on Episode 69 – “Leg Godt = Play Well”.) Later this month we've also got our first Mid-South Cartoonists Association Sat-Art-Day of the year back out at 901 Comics East on Macon Road on January 25th from 10m-2pm. Our next MSCA Monthly Dinner Gathering will be on Tuesday, February 4th from 6-8pm at Garibaldi's Pizza off Walker Avenue near the U Of M. One of my resolutions is to better promote my art and my podcast, as well as other artists and podcasts. So, I've got a special offer! I am now offering free promo spot airtime on the "Drawing Funny" podcast. MSCA members and any events or businesses that support the Mid-South Cartoonists Association are welcome to send in their 15-30sec promo spot as an MP3 file. It can be to promote your art project, event appearance, Kickstarter campaign, commission availability, website, art sale, etc. Don't know how to record a commercial..? That's okay- just send me your info and he'll read it in one of the podcast's upcoming news segments. Just remember, "who/what/when/where/why/how much". I'm also looking to do promo spot swaps with other podcasts. For those commercials up to 60sec are good to submit. If you'd like to discuss your event or project in person, or be a featured guest on the podcast let me know and I'll get back with you to schedule a recording time and place. Send your MP3 formatted audio files and/or news/press releases to podcast(at)drawingfunny(dot)com. Click here to listen the latest "Drawing Funny" promo on Spotify or go to www.drawingfunny.com. Show notes: This is part 2 of my 2024 MSCA year end wrap-up review conversation with Mid-South Cartoonists Association president Kevin L. Williams. Kev and I pick up where we left off on "Drawing Funny" Ep. 71 discussing the very busy year our local cartooning group experienced in 2024. The MSCA and its members were a part of numerous art shows, festivals, conventions, gatherings, and other events in and around Memphis and the mid-south area- plus created new MSCA "The Good, The Bad, And The Sketchy" zine issues and "Drawing Funny" podcast episodes (and a new DF promo spot) for folks to check out. This was probably the busiest the MSCA and its members have been in years, and 2025 doesn't look like it's gonna slow down any! Our first MSCA Monthly Dinner Gathering will be this Tuesday, January 7th from 6-8pm at Garibaldi's Pizza off Walker Avenue near the U Of M. Later this month we've also got our first Sat-Art-Day of the year back out at 901 Comics East on Macon Road on January 25th from 10m-2pm. Be sure to follow the MSCA's socials and website for where else the cartoonists association and I will be in 2025. I went solo to many shows, so thankfully all my con tables were near a restroom this year, and there was even a defibrillator behind me at one event. It was good to have all my health issue bases covered as I got back into doing cons again in 2024! Hope to see you around the M-town and mid-south this year. You can find the second half of our 2hr toon talk on Episode 72 - "MSCA 2024 Review Pt. 2". We give our thoughts and recollections of 2024 art shows, festivals, conventions, gatherings, and other events in and around Memphis and the mid-south area- plus the new MSCA "The Good, The Bad, And The Sketchy" zine issues and "Drawing Funny" podcast episodes created in 2024. This was probably the busiest the MSCA has been in years, and 2025 doesn't look like it's gonna slow down any! Our first MSCA Monthly Dinner Gathering will be this Tuesday, January 7th from 6-8pm at Garibaldi's Pizza off Walker Avenue near the U Of M. We've also got our first Sat-Art-Day of the year back out at 901 Comics East on Macon Road later this month on January 25th from 10m-2pm. Hope to see you around town and the mid-south this year. Be sure to follow the MSCA's socials and website for where else the cartoonists association and I will be in 20o25. Thankfully all my con tables were near a restroom this year year, and there was even a defibrillator behind one. Glad that all my health issue bases were covered in 2024! "Stay tooned!" Show notes: For this 70th episode, I took a quick trip up to Memphis to attend the Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention at the Holiday Inn on the U of M campus. This year is the 14th anniversary for the local con. it was started by Joe Thordarson, Brandon Olmstead, and Allan Gilbreath - who also do the radio shows "Geek Tank Radio" and "Tool Talk Radio"on 98.9 The Roar. I ran into several local comic creators, some like Greg Cravens (Con Cards) and A.G. Howard (Howard Art Studios) I've known for about 4o years now! They were the two artists who mentored me when I first started airbrushing back in my late teens. Some other familiar faces (and voices) at the MCFC were Matt Bowers, Allan Gilbreath, Shawn Howe, Devin Hodges, John Martin, and Chris "The Jowers" Jowers. I also beamed aboard Station Shelby to talk with James Wheatly about the local Star Trek fan club in town. There were lots of vendors, artists, and even some LEGO to play with in the dealer's room, plus around the con there was a game room, panel room, and an autograph section. I had a great time talking toons with everyone at the con on Sunday. It's kinda crazy how many cons and art events there are in town these days! Speaking of events, I also share some info on our upcoming MSCA monthly dinner meet-up and holiday art swap at Garibaldi's Pizza on December 3rd, from 6-8pm, the Midsouth Toy Fest, and other MSCA member and industry news, including former Memphians Mike Norton and John Jackson Miller. Show notes: In this 69th episode, I took a trip up the street to the new Bricks & Minifigs shop in my neck of the woods- Hernando, MS. Long time Mid-South Cartoonists Association member Dr. Kevin Thorn and his wife Tammy Blackman Thorn are the owners of not only a new franchised LEGO themed shop, but what looks to be one of the coolest shops in the mid-south area! I talked to the couple about the genesis of going into business with each other on this new Bricks & Minifigs franchise opportunity in their home town, their plans for the future of the local shop (parties, workshops, art gallery, and more!), and their love of LEGO. The Bricks & Minifigs Hernando shop will be officially opening in January 2025 (hopefully Jan. 11th), but fingers crossed they plan a soft opening on Black Friday- or as they call it, "Block Friday" and the Christmas shopping season. They were doing a "Buy Day" buying event when I stopped by to visit, and many folks were stopping buy to trade in their LEGO sets and loose bricks for cash. One cool thing about the used bricks is that the Hernando Bricks & Minifigs shop will not only be washing all the bricks they take in, they will also regularly be disinfecting all the ones in their loose bins, too! You will be able to buy new and used LEGO sets, mini-figs, and loose bricks to create your own plastic creations. This brand new Bricks & Minifigs store is located at 210 E. Commerce Street, Suite #7 in Hernando, MS. From Memphis head south on I-55 to exit 280 (Hernando/Commerce Street), turn right on Commerce Street, stay in the left lane, go past the McDonalds, and turn right after the R/R tracks. The shop is in the shopping center next to Bazar's Bakery & Restaurant, and just up the street from the DeSoto County Museum and Area 51 Ice Cream. Oh, and there's a new mural inside the shop by MSCA member Greg Cravens! I also share some info on MSCA and other local events such as our recent "The Funny Pages" art show reception at Germantown Community Theatre over the weekend, and our upcoming MSCA monthly dinner meet-up and holiday art swap at Garibaldi's Pizza on December 3rd, from 6-8pm. I, along with my Star Wars fangirl wife Nicki Workman and MSCA members, Lee Raggs, Kevin L. Nicki and I also discuss our other May The Fourth adventures around town, and other upcoming events like the MSCA Monthly Dinner Gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza and the Memphis Public Libraries' Comic Con. Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is the biggest event in the comic book industry—a single day (every year on the first Saturday in May) when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops! Founded on the belief that for every person out there, there's a comic book they'll love, the annual event offers a huge selection of free titles designed to appeal to a broad range of age levels and their tastes. Show notes: This episode features an interview I did with long time Mid-South Cartoonists Association member Jim Palmer. We talked toons after one of the recent MSCA monthly dinner meet-ups at Garibaldi's Pizza. Jim's first printed work was in 1969 while working at a Baptist Publishing here in Memphis. After being there just a few months, they requested he come up with a comics page for one of their magazines for kids in grades 1-6. They said they wanted it to be a (their words) "a Christian PEANUTS", and named it "CAPERS". After leaving there in 1971, he continued to freelance it, as well as do other illustrations until September 1987. The next month Jim began "LI'L E". Jim said, "I began LI'L E in the October issue of "MEMPHIS STAR" magazine, a local (at the time) music mag. I had been working there for maybe a year & a half by then doing paste-up (remember that?), working in the dark room, & providing a few cartoon style illustrations for each issue. I wanted to do a regular strip or page of my own creation. The editor said ok, but it had to be done "off-the-clock". It had to have some kind of local music connection, but I wanted it to be something that would also work outside Memphis. Thinking newspaper syndication. Having grown up listening to Elvis, I thought why not do an Elvis impersonator, & I suppose also being a PEANUTS fan to make him a little kid. That's about all the "inspiration" there was to it." Jim got into acting during his second year of college and did about a dozen shows before graduating. He's been doing it ever since, including plays around town- many with his wife Jo Lynne. He was in "The People VS Larry Flint" and once portrayed Alice Cooper's butler for TV. Back in 2010 Jim portrayed the evil Professor Moriarty in Theatre Memphis' production of "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure". I did my "Elementary – The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes" art show out in the lobby area of Theatre Memphis during the run of the play. In 2022, Jim played Police Inspector Goole for Germantown Community Theatre's production of "An Inspector Calls", and has participated in other GCT plays and the MSCA art shows there as well. And speaking of the MSCA, there's a bit of event and member news included in this episode. Hope you enjoy this latest MSCA member spotlight episode. Her childhood was spent growing up between Frayser and Raleigh in North Memphis and would often draw to escape the harsh reality of growing up without a father in her life. After promising her grandmother in 4th grade she would go to the Memphis College of Art she did just that and went on to get a BFA in painting and later on a Masters of Art in Teaching in Art Education to spread the joy and chaos of art to kids in Kindergarten to 12th grade which she has done fully licensed since 2010. Katie was also greatly influenced by the southerwestern artist Ted DeGrazia and Keith Haring. This is a follow up to Episode 47 – “Back To Basics". While on our way home from the MSCA December dinner meet-up this month I told Nicki about a couple recent conversations with some fellow local creators. They had asked for my advice on their art and projects. Well, even though I do a podcast that offers advice on just about every episode (and even multiple times on each of those episodes), after my many failures and less than stellar art career I've been questioning my art expertise when it comes to giving advice. I asked her is she thought I was qualified, and that conversation led to this episode which includes some very good advice by her. Not just on creating art, but some of the business basics of being creative for a living, as well as her life in corporate America, and reasons for continuing her education at this point in her life. Was happy to catch her on break between semesters to get her to share her thoughts. I'm super proud of her being able to juggle a full time day job and work trips while attending grad school online and keeping a 4.0 GPA at the same time. She's in the home stretch for her MBA! I also have some local MSCA news about upcoming dinner meetings (next one is Tuesday, January 3rd), current and upcoming art shows and plays around town, as well as some news about the first ever MSCA Drink-N-Draw (Wed. 1/18/23) and Sketchy Saturday (1/28/23) at 901 Comics East. Show notes: So, just what is the MSCA..? The Mid-South Cartoonists Association (MSCA) is a non-profit organization of professional cartoonists, aspiring cartoonists, and cartooning enthusiasts. In 2022 the MSCA has celebrated 35 years of drawing funny in the Mid-South, and our podcast just entered it's 3rd season. For the MSCA it all started way back in the spring of 1987 when a small group of professional cartoonists came together to form The Memphis Cartoonists Group. The name didn't stick and by the third meeting and first official newsletter the name became The Mid-South Cartoonist Association (with ‘Cartoonist' becoming plural in 2000). Many founding members worked from home so the MSCA was created to bring together cartooning professionals, and invite aspiring professionals and cartooning fans of all backgrounds, ages and skill levels to join in on the fun of cartooning. Our members have worked for newspapers, magazines, ad agencies, and comic book publishers such as Marvel, DC Comics, Image, and Dark Horse, as well as self-publishing their own creator-owned projects and teaching others. The group has promoted the art of cartooning by putting its creativity and time behind various cartooning classes, conventions, charity fundraisers, art shows, anthology comics/zines, drawing nights (and mornings), art trips, web comics, a podcast, as well as having appeared on TV, radio, other podcasts, and in various print media. Our aim is to help more cartoonists, writers, and animators to reach their goals no matter how young or old, published or just starting out. Whether you enjoy simply reading cartoons, dig drawing magazine cartoons or comic books, like to mentor or want to learn, or even if you just need to find an artist or writer to collaborate with, please come check us out. If you love cartoons, are drawn to comics, or just draw funny then the MSCA is for you...and it's free to join us. Either join our mailing list, interact with us on social media, message us on Facebook, or stop by any MSCA event. It's pretty simple and doesn't cost you anything. If you'd like to join us in person, we meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm at Garibaldi's Pizza near the U of M. MSCA monthly meet-ups are free and open to the public- just bring a few bucks if you'd like to order off the menu. And be sure to introduce yourself. If you have kids interested in getting into cartooning please bring them out. If you are a kid, please have a parent attend with you. If you're not sure about meeting a group of sketchy strangers all by yourself then feel free to bring along a friend. We love to have folks bring whatever art they've been working on and encourage others to talk toons, draw on jam pieces, or do napkin doodles with us! In 2014, the strip found its way into print starting in two newspapers in Rhode Island, where he lives with his family. Show notes: I'm solo again for this 40th episode. Lately I've seen a lot of comics creators online ask, "Where do I begin?" Well, "Just start making comics." seems like the most honest answer, but I know that there's a lot more to that question. I don't have all the answers, but I do share my my comics origin story and thoughts on creating comics. I offer up some advice, resources, cautionary tales, and more about making comics and getting them out there to readers. Lots of ways to make comics these days, and lots of ways to read comics, too. I've seen the pros and cons of doing cons. I don't offer any real advice on breaking into comics, because like writer/editor/publisher Mark Waid has said, "Breaking into comics is like breaking out of jail: once you find a way, that way is closed forever." It's different for everyone. I do however encourage making comics- and hope the info shared in this episode will help you not only avoid the pitfalls I did creating my own comics, but also enjoy similar positive experiences like I did. Looking back they far outweighed the negative. If you have any questions I didn't cover feel free to stop by one of the MSCA monthly dinner meetings at the U of M Garibaldi's Pizza (1st Tuesday of the month, 7pm), or drop me a line. Show notes: In this solo episode I have some MSCA member/meeting news, more updates on upcoming conventions/events such as Free Comic Book Day and the Memphis Comic Expo(DonnieCon), as well as some memories of mine and Nicki's Saturday in midtown Memphis visiting The Art Center, attending MidTown Con at Black Lodge, seeing a photo exhibit at Crosstown Arts, discovering the Memphis Listening Lab at Crosstown Concourse, and shopping at The Cellar and Comics & Collectibles. Plus I talk about Antonio Johnson's Clip Studio Paint demo at the April MSCA dinner meet-up, and me sliding by 901 Comics, Goner Records, and Burke's Bookstore in the Cooper-Young neighborhood. Also feature the Little House Art Project and their current Autism Awareness art show with the Southaven Arts Council (which runs through April at the Southaven Library), the DeSoto Camera Club's latest photo display at the Hernando Library, plus other mid-south art happenings. The back-half of the episode is about a Facebook post I shared about "high functioning anxiety". I discuss my anxiety/depression/health issues. If you want to skip that part of the show, the local art/event news is at the front ("Anxiety" section begins at 40min 50sec). If you are dealing with any mental or physical issues I hope that you listen to the whole episode and that my sharing what's going on in my head and hands these days helps you. Definitely therapeutic for me to talk out loud about it. Please don't keep whatever you're going through to yourself.- talk to someone and/or seek help(988). Show Notes: In this episode my fellow Mid-South Cartoonists Association members Kevin L. Williams, Greg Cravens and I pay respect and share stories about our friend and cartoonist Sam Ray who passed away in December, 2021. I've been wanting to get together with some of the local cartooning gang to record a tribute to Sam, and in spite of some technical difficulties we were able to record for a bit during the MSCA monthly zoom call this week (thanks to some quick thinking by Kev.) Another left-hander, Sam was a great cartoonist/writer & created his “Business As Usual” comic strips which were published in The Commercial Appeal, The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Boy's Life, Reader's Digest, Barron's, Woman's World, Forbes, and our first MSCA comic anthology. He was also a writer on the "Hagar The Horrible" comic strip for 6 years. Sam was a soft-spoken artist who was always willing to talk toons and swap stories with other cartoonists at our meetings and events. He was part of the MSCA since it's creation in the late '80s, and will be greatly missed. 2022 represents the MSCA's 35th year of “drawing funny” and I got a recorded state of the association address from MSCA prez Kevin. He mentions some club history and discusses his future plans for our milestone anniversary year. One of which is the upcoming group art show “'Murica”, which will be presented February 17 – 27, 2022, at Germantown Community Theater alongside the comedy play, “The Complete History of America (Abridged).” This art show shares a variation of art styles and techniques from different members Terence Washington, Jim Palmer, Dale Martin, Greg Cravens, Kevin Williams, and Lin Workman (me). He was also a ghost-writer on the "Hagar The Horrible" strip for six years, illustrated the book “Sane Investing For The Non-Financial”, and self-published a collection of his Business As Usual cartoons. He was incredibly laid back & known to offer friendly advice with soft-spoken words to his fellow cartoonists at many an MSCA dinner meeting- usually while drawing a funny chicken, duck or penguin. Show notes: "How much is that art in the window?" In this solo episode I discuss pricing and selling- or not selling my art, and what some folks have thought about the prices I charge and if my work is worth the cost. I've talked before about how I got into drawing funny for a living and how I've set up at conventions and art shows, but really haven't mentioned why I charge what I do for my sketchcards, sketchcovers, paintings, prints, tees and more. I also talk a bit more on how I create my own art, where I've sold it over the years, and what expenses I've experienced. Plus if you've wondered what exactly is a sketchcard and/or a sketchcover, wanted to know how to get into doing them, or how much they pay- I talk about that as well. I don't have all the answers by a long shot, but if you're struggling with what to charge for your work maybe this will help you understand art pricing and some possible avenues for selling and buying art. If you have any ideas or stories on selling art and/or how you price things, please give me a yell at podcast (at) drawingfunny (dot) com. I'd love to hear from you. Shameless plug alert: I have several of my hand drawn sketchcards and a few sketchcovers available for sale at a comic shop here in Memphis- The Cellar.
