To celebrate Pride month, Sully sat down with voice actor, script writer, and ADR director David Wald to discuss his work in working to dub and license LGBTQ themed anime, including Love Stage!! and Hitorijime My Hero. David is known for voicing Gajeel Refox in Fairy Tail, Bulat in Akame ga Kill!, Berg Katze in Gatchaman Crowds, and Tetsutetsu in My Hero Academia, and has been the ADR director for Love Stage!!, Hitorijime My Hero, Kokkoku, Bloom Into You, and the upcoming dub of Cutie Honey Universe. In this episode, David discusses pushing to get more queer anime into the West, the place that LGBTQ fans have in the anime community, and introducing anime to a wider audience. Sully and David also talk about how anime can play an important role in the coming out narratives of LGBTQ fans. Note: Due to connection issues, there are some drop outs on David's end from the mid point until the end of the podcast. Austin tried to edit around them the best he could but unfortunately, the sound quality is not the best. Thank you for listening! We’re taking a short break from Shonen Jump-related podcast to talk about a creator celebrating a special 50th anniversary milestone – Go Nagai! 2018 is the 50th year of the legendary mangaka's career, and he’s seen a resurgence of popularity thanks to a slew of new anime based on his works like Mazinger Z: Infinity, Cutie Honey Universe, and most famously, Devilman Crybaby! To celebrate Go Nagi’s legacy and the renaissance of his work in the anime community, we’re discussing the original Devilman manga, recently released in the U.S. for the first time in a beautiful hardcover edition courtesy of Seven Seas! Joining us is our good friend and devilishly handsome Go Nagai devotee Josh Dunham, host of Senpai Coast to Coast of co-founder of Wave Motion Cannon! We go over Go Nagi’s career, what inspired him to write Devilman, and how his personal demons may have carried over into his work. Josh provides a ton of wonderful insight on the chaotic, anarchic mind of Nagai, making for one of our best analytical discussion so far! This podcast has literally been two years in the making – we’ve been planning to do a Devilman podcast with Josh since we first had him on the show all the way back in July 2016, so it’s exciting to see it finally come to fruition! Sit back and listen as we explore the macabre world of Devilman and gleam as many insights we can from its dark and twisted world. But first, we’ve got our usual news roundup to go through! We discuss the Oricon Top Selling Manga list, which has some surprising series making it on to the top ten! Then, we discuss the deaths of several manga magazines in print, and speculate whether this trend heralds the end for manga magazines in general. Plus we discuss a lot of new manga, new licenses, and new anime that we’re really looking forward to! Bcom, Kat, and Leo are joined by Brains from the Trash Pandas Watch Anime podcast to break down the upcoming Spring 2018 anime season. We go show by show through almost 60 TV anime, and give you the rundown on whether we think they’ll be worth a watch, or at least worth a drunken hate-watch. In doing so, I think we all learned a lot about everyone who took part in this cast. Leo is clearly a manga snob. Kat just wants pretty boys to be healthy and drink more milk. Brains, who has watched over 1,000 anime in his time, has happily accepted moe into his heart as the one truly great genre. And as for Bcom, well, it gets clearer every podcast that he has impeccable taste in anime, and in having that, he’s already won the pretty derby of life.Make sure to stick around for the last part of the episode, where we made some predictions that will likely be very embarrassing for us in a couple months, if not a few weeks. As always, the timestamps are below, but I recommend pouring yourself a nice cold drink, maybe grabbin’ some snacks, and settling in for the long run, because it’s a good one.Or, if you don’t have a lot of time, just skip to Comic Girls. Because man, that was some shit.Recorded March 24, 2018.Timestamps:2:46 - My Hero Academia 3rd Season (minor spoilers)7:08 - Steins;Gate 012:49 - Tokyo Ghoul:re19:03 - Food Wars!: The Third Plate – Part 224:37 - Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online29:01 - High School DxD Hero31:05 - Persona 5 the Animation33:46 - Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzakashii37:37 - Devil’s Line40:34 - Full Metal Panic!
