In the first episode of Casual Chats in 2024, Patricia and special guest Des Shinta discuss about the 2023 anime miniseries FLCL: Grunge as well as FLCL: Shoegaze that were both commissioned by [adult swim]. FLCL: Grunge focuses on three teenagers and their perspectives taken place on the same night where Haruko is pretending to be the mayor's girlfriend and the wife of a yakuza organization trying to find Atomsk and take down Medical Mechanica. FLCL: Shoegaze takes place 10 years after the events of FLCL: Alternative where a teenage boy who can see green spirits meets up with a strange, hyperactive, and unpredictable teenage girl who wants to take down the city's tower and blow it up. Meanwhile Kana Koumoto, the protagonist of FLCL: Alternative, is now a 27-year-old police officer working for the Bureau of Interstellar Immigration trying to stop them from causing catastrophic damage to the tower. When both series premiered on Adult Swim, they received mixed reviews from fans saying that it pales in comparison to the original series from 2001. What did Patricia and Des think of both of them? Listen and find out. The songs "Battle Onward" and "Stardust Surfer" were performed by Omni Slim. First impressions are done finally... mostly, so to celebrate we've got the two new FLCL titles to review. Both FLCL Grunge and FLCL Shoegaze dropped recently and we finally got a minute to see what we thought. With the former being a prequel to the original series and the latter being a sequel to FLCL Alternative, are FLCL fans eating good this year, or was it maybe shy of the glory that the original holds? We've got our take on things as well a some speculation on what may be in store for the series down the road, but that's not all! We wanted to spend some time talking about bad shows in general for no reason, we promise, as well as take a look at some reviews of much beloved titles currently airing to see if they have some valid critiques or maybe are just salty. Breaking News In AI: https://aidaily.usShow Site: https://thinkfuture.com--Chris embarks on a journey highlighting the stark differences between the past and present narratives within media. Using the anime series "FLCL" as a touchstone, he illustrates how stories once rich with depth, intricacies, and multiple intertwining storylines have gradually been flattened to offer more straightforward, and often oversimplified narratives. Drawing parallels from "FLCL" and its subsequent seasons, Chris emphasizes a concerning trend where the denseness of stories diminishes, making them less engaging and less thought-provoking. The 'flattening', as he refers to it, represents this transition from media that challenged its audience, making them think, interpret, and fill in the gaps, to content that spells everything out with little left to interpretation. Such a shift, he suggests, risks underestimating the intelligence of the audience and their capability to engage in imaginative participation. By comparing older iconic works like "Blade Runner" and "Toy Story" which held multiple layers and depths, to some of the newer media offerings, Chris paints a vivid picture of this transformation. He passionately calls upon modern creators, urging them to revert to crafting multi-layered tales. By doing so, they not only respect the audience's intelligence but also enrich the overall viewing or reading experience, making it more immersive. In a world of rapid technological advancements, Chris's plea is a reminder of the timeless value of nuanced storytelling. As he signs off, he leaves his listeners with a compelling message, to not forget the essence and power of a well-crafted, complex story. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thinkfuture/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thinkfuture/support
