On January 16th, 2025, the world lost one of the greats; American filmmaker David Lynch passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind a decades-long career of truly unique films and television series' including Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Inland Empire, and many more. Many of us at Third Impact are big fans of Lynch's work, and Sully wanted to take some time to reflect on his life, his art, and his influence on various anime and Japanese video games over the years. Joining us are two returning friends, Drew and Emma of Sideburns and Cigarettes: A Lupin the Third Podcast who are also big Lynch fans. We dedicate this episode of David's life and his work. Honey Flash! Sully and returning guest Salvatore (@RetroSofa) sit down with VA and dub director David Wald and OG Cutie Honey dub actress Jessica Calvello to discuss their work on the recent English dub for the 2004 OVA Re: Cutie Honey from Discotek! Topics include how Go Nagai chose Jessica for the role of Honey, how dubbing has changed since Jessica first took the role in the 90s for New Cutie Honey, and what makes Honey so special all these years later. An important note: This was recorded a few months ago, prior to David's statement on Crunchyroll opening his fan mail without his knowledge and dispersing the contents to their staff. Upon David's request, we didn't go back and add any additional mention of this in the episode, but we did want to state here in text that we are deeply disappointed in Crunchyroll's behavior and we encourage anyone listening or reading this to support David and call upon Crunchyroll to do better. Time stamps: 00:00:00 - Intro and Jessica's long history with the character 00:12:59 - Bringing back returning cast members from previous Cutie Honey and Go Nagai anime projects 00:15:49 - David's thoughts on directing dubs for "archival anime" as opposed to newly airing anime 00:18:04 - Salvatore on being a Cutie Honey super-fan, archivist, and working with Discotek Media 00:27:07 - Jessica and David on the nuances and differences across the various Cutie Honey series' 00:40:21 - How does Jessica approach the work of acting within the limitations of anime 00:46:04 - Jessica and David on dub script adaptation and directing 00:53:26 - A brief aside about Excel Saga and Jessica's "Excel Saga Journal" 01:03:49 - Knowing that Cutie Honey is a very fanservice heavy show, how do you approach that with pathos? 01:15:45 - David's approach to the lesbian text of Cutie Honey 01:27:39 - Casting Kayleigh McKee as Black Claw 01:34:46 - What's Cutie Honey's appeal for Salvatore? 01:50:49 - Salvatore asks about the mythical Cutie Honey CGI project that never materialized 02:01:24 - Jessica has a crucial question for Salvatore: Is Cutie Honey an android or a magical girl? 02:07:36 - Would Jessica and David return to dub Cutie Honey Flash if given the chance? 02:10:27 - Outro If you enjoy this or any other episode, leave us a Rating and Review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or elsewhere! We went to our biggest anime convention yet and what better way to celebrate than having our longest Con-versations episode yet. This time, Austin and Tori review Otakon 2024 which was held in Washington, DC from August 2-4th, 2024. This episode would have been out earlier, but between life stuff and us recording for over three and a half hours, it was a lot to get through. Totally worth it though, if you ask me, due in large part to our very special guests, Coop and Maddy! Coop you may know from their work at Discotek Media, Anime News Network, AnimEigo, J-Novel Club, and their own podcast, Dude, You Remember Macross? and Maddy you may have heard appear on shows like Giant Robot FM and Chatty AF: The Anime Feminist Podcast. 150 episodes! How about that? For this special milestone, we decided to do something a little different than our usual fair; Bill put together a really fun TRIVIA episode to delight listeners and stump his contestants (Austin, Tori, and Sully). Of course this is heavily influenced by the annual trivia episodes produced by our podcasting senseis over at Anime World Order and we hope they don't mind us lovingly ripping them off. With three rounds of three categories, Bill stumps us with questions about superheroes, idols, school clubs, Letterboxd reviews, McDonalds, and much more. We hope you enjoy. And to everyone who has been listening to us since the beginning, or are just now jumping in, thanks for being here! Here's to the next 150 episodes. On that day, this podcast feed received a grim reminder. Humanity lives in fear of yet another episode of the Third Impact Anime Podcast. Not only is this our first proper episode of 2024, it's the beginning of a retrospective looking back at the one and only Attack on Titan, a series that defined the 2010s and finally wrapped up last year. How well does that first season hold up? What do we think of the parts we have and haven't seen yet? Is this series legitimately good or a bunch of hot titan smoke? Austin, Tori, and Ryan venture outside the walls to tell you just that. This episode is our review of the first 13 episodes with subsequent parts releasing over the course of the next few months. Please enjoy! What do you think of Attack on Titan? What are some of your memories associated with it? Did you stick it out to the end? Did you drop off? Why? And if youuuuu caaaaannnn believe it, it's Christmas once again! We're happy to present (ha) our 2023 Anime Secret Santa Special! If you're not familiar with this project, the kind folks over at the Taiiku Podcast (formerly the All Geeks Considered Podcast, formerly more-so the Reverse Thieves Podcast) organize an annual Secret Santa swap between various bloggers and podcasters in the fandom space. The way it works is that every year, you're randomly assigned a Secret Santa, and they pick three shows for you to check out based on what you've seen via your favorite anime tracking site (MyAnimeList, Kitsu, Anime Planet, etc.). Then, you are to review at least one of those shows and either write or podcast about it. Austin, Tobias, and Bill all participated this year with their own individual picks, and here we are reviewing them all at once for a fun Christmas extravaganza! Here's what we got from Santa-san this Christmas: KILL ME BABY and STAR DRIVER (Tobias) SAMURAI FLAMENCO and LOVE LIVE! SUPERSTAR!! (partial review) (Austin) KAIJI: ULTIMATE SURVIVOR and DEVILMAN CRYBABY (Bill) Please enjoy, and thanks again to Kory and the Taiiku Podcast for hosting this awesome annual event once again! It's not Christmas without Anime Secret Santa, so thank you from the bottom of our kokoro. We hope you love this podcast episode as much as Noa loves Alphonse, but that's pretty unlikely. On this episode, we're reviewing 1988's Mobile Police Patlabor (OVA), our first Patreon request episode. Bill, Tobias, and Austin helm this review coming to you courtesy of our NERV Commander level patron, Drew H.! We want to thank Drew for pushing us to review Patlabor, a franchise we've all enjoyed for a few years but never had a chance to talk about. You can catch Drew over on his own podcast, Sideburns & Cigarettes, as well as on a previous episode of Third Impact Anime. 00:00:00 Intro & opening discussion about the Netflix One Piece trailer number 2. 00:14:16 Note from our Executive Producer for this episode, Drew H., about why he chose Patlabor (OVA) as his Patreon pick 00:18:04 Patlabor (OVA) background history, crew, and cast 00:30:08 Review and discussion 02:26:23 Outro If you enjoy this or any other episode, leave us a Rating and Review on Apple Podcasts! Here's something a little different from us; a bonus episode! We haven't had a proper bonus episode since 2020, but we're back with another one. This time, Ryan sits down with three developers from Something Classic games, an indie game studio, to talk about their upcoming JRPG-inspired game Quartet! They chatted about how the team came to be, their history with JRPGs, the trials and tribulations of game development, how they feel about IHOP, and of course, we asked them about anime. Their answers might surprise you! Thanks so much to Peter, Patrick, and Tyler for coming on the show. All music comes from the Quartet soundtrack. Be sure and wish-list Quartet on Steam, download the demo (out now!), and buy it when it releases in Q1 2024. Also check out Something Classic's previous games Pillars of Dust and Shadows of Adam. About Quartet: A series of unlikely train robberies. A mysterious deck of cards. A fleet of deadly airships. An accidental mage. Choose from four stories, in any order, and discover how they intertwine in this turn-based RPG. If you enjoy this or any other episode, leave us a Rating and Review on Apple Podcasts! Another Animazement is successfully behind us (a whole month ago, if you can believe it) and here's our breakdown of all the great fun we had across those four shockingly chilly days in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. Hoist your wine glasses towards the infinite sea of stars! On this episode, we are reviewing the 1982 space opera based on the iconic manga from Leiji Matsumoto, Space Pirate Captain Harlock: Arcadia of My Youth. The primary reason we're reviewing this is because back on February 13th, 2023, Leiji Matsumoto passed away at age 85. His manga are some of the most enduring and influential works of the medium, placing him up there with Tezuka and other greats. Sully had the chance to interview some scholars of his works back in 2021 (you can find those here) but we've never properly reviewed any of his works until now! 2022 has come to a close and we're doing our final Kotatsu Corner a little different than usual. First off, we're doing one at all (we promise they will be more regular in the coming year), but second off, we've adapted an old idea into a new format! If you've followed us for a while, you may remember that we used to do blog posts cataloging and celebrating the things that resonated with us the most over the last year. We could have done that again, but heck, we're a podcast darnit! This time we're taking the same idea but doing it in podcast form. Tobias has stitched together submissions from six TIA contributors into one, long episode where we talk about the media that meant something to us this year. We hope you enjoy our lists and we encourage you to comment or e-mail us your own lists of things that meant a lot to you this year. Maybe we'll read them on the show! Email us at thirdimpactanime@gmail.com Thanks for sticking with us yet again. We hope to continue to give our best effort in producing brand-new episodes and panels in 2023 and we can't wait for the friends we meet along the way. In the pre-show we talk about what we've been watching in the current anime season including Spy X Family, Ya Boi Kongming, and Birdy Wing. We recorded this a few weeks back so we're not completely up-to-date but it's good enough. Anyways, hope you enjoy the episode! Why are they cats? I guess you'll find out. Shout out to the Insert Credit Podcast for the template that we borrowed to do our rankings. If you have an issue with our list, cry to us on social media about it! Do it! It's almost April, and you know what that means... we're only 6 months away from Halloween! Why not get the party started early with another episode covering a Junji Ito work, this time his anthology piece Fragments of Horror. Published between 2013 and 2014, this is one of Junji Ito's more recent works and many of the stories therein were adapted into the 2018 anime series, The Junji Ito Collection. The short stories in this collection are Futon, Wooden Spirit, Tomio: Red Turtleneck, Gentle Goodbye, Dissection Girl, Blackbird, Magami Nanakuse, and Whispering Woman.
