Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! It's Nutty November and I've mandated the nuttiest movie I could think of: Pom Poko. Yes, this animated Ghibli classic is absolutely chockful o' nuts. More nuts than you can shake a stick at. Welcome back to Beyond Miyazaki's World. In this episode, Betty and Avery cover Isao Takahata's 1994 fantasy adventure film, Pom Poko. The pair cover themes relating to the environment, such as urban sprawl and habitat destruction, as well as various elements of Japanese folklore and religion. When human beings enter the forest of the tanuki, otherwise known as Japanese "raccoon dogs," to initiate a construction project, the lifestyle and survival of local wildlife is threatened. How will the tanuki respond to these developments and can their ancient art of shapeshifting aid them in protecting their home? Find out in this episode! George Wood and Charlotte Sometimes (freelance film writers) return to Flixwatcher to review Georges's choice Pom Poko. Pom Poko (1994) is a Studio Ghibli animation written and directed by Isao (Grave of the Fireflies) Takahata. Pom Poko is the story of tanuki, which in Japanese folk lore are magical shape shifting creatures, also referred to as Japanese raccoon dogs which has led to the incorrect translation of ‘raccoons' to the English version. The film opens in late 1960s Japan, a group of tanuki (raccoon dogs) find their natural habitat threatened by rampant suburban development. Fast forward to the 1990s and the tanuki are facing reduced resources and space and resorting to fighting with each other for survival. A group of elders come up with a strategy to take back their land that involves killing of humans and learning the art of shapeshifting. Testicles are also a prominent feature in tanuki traditions and they feature frequently in Pom Poko, if referred to incorrectly as ‘pouches' in the English dub. Your enjoyment of Pom Poko rests largely on your tolerance of testicles or your interest in their versatility in battling against environment destruction. Mixed recommendability and low repeat viewing scores, at nearly two hours it is a long animation, give Pom Poko an overall rating of 3.48. This week, Nigel and Tazziii join the race to become King of the Pirates in this retrospective on Netflix's One Piece live-action adaptation with Content Creator Izzy Kento (starting at 27:20). We praise the adaptation that got it right as we examine the aspects of this series that stayed true to the source material while working for this new medium. Izzy brings their love for the manga series as Tazziii shares experiences from over 600 episodes of the anime for us to judge what works and why our favourite moments land so well. We also get into the characters and why they work so well from a storytelling perspective. There's also room made to talk about the podcast favourite Zoro...though not enough time by the sound of it! Other stories we're enjoying include: Baldur's Gate 3, One Piece (Manga), Pom Poko, Scott Pilgrim: Takes Off, Shadow and Bone, Family Switch, Invincible, Obliterated, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Ranking of Kings.

[School of Movies 2023] This was a whimsical period for Ghibli, they tried a few new things, and established one or two absolute mainstays. 1991: Only Yesterday (1m 50s) 1992: Porco Rosso (11m 50s) 1993: Ocean Waves (25m 10s) 1994: Pom Poko (41m 10s) 1995: Whisper of the Heart (59m 40s) There's a disarmingly frank and sympathetic story of a schoolgirl hitting adolescence wrapped in a Hallmark movie about returning to your rural home town after the big city has crushed your spirit. Conversely there's a high school romance about a doormat crushing on a girl who thinks only of herself. Then there's two of the most abiding and beloved of their canon, in the tale of a high school girl who likes a musical boy which winds up being a powerful statement on creativity, and then there's the World War II pilot who was turned into a pig. But he's much rather be porcine than fascist. And finally, an ecological parable starring enormous raccoon testicles!

Scooby Doo and the gang been taught us, y'all: the monsters are (almost) always human. That's our trope this week on ScaryCrit, with Lauren and Jared taking a look at one of the most harrowing horror/suspense films in recent memory, The Boy Behind the Door (2020). A vicious juxtaposition of violence against innocence, this Crit explores the intersectionality that instigates Bobby and Kevin's precarious situation as they try to get out of it, the film's genius, subversive handling of audience expectation and how absolutely dark this trope can be. Trigger warning: like the film it covers, this episode contains discussion of violence against children. Listening discretion is advised.Rate and review ScaryCrit on Apple Podcasts and Spotify! Pom Poko is a 1994 Japanese Anime with sometimes cute, and sometimes not so cute transforming racoon dogs or otherwise known in Japan as tanuki. Unfortunately things begin to change for the tanuki as they are being threatened by a new suburban project that is in development in their territory. In a series of misadventures and pranks the tanuki are forced to take more desperate measures to try and save their home. The animation is directed by Isao Takhata, produced by Studio Ghibli, and distributed by Toho. Starring voice actors Makoto Nonomura, Shigeru Izumiya, Shincho Kokontei and Yuriko Ishida.
