While comic books have traditionally been defined by heroes that reflect the extremes of masculinity and femininity, and aimed at a primary straight-male audience, a notable shift has happened over the past 20 or so years. Where queer characters were once merely hinted at, or when included portrayed as grotesque stereotypes, since at least the 2000s comics have become increasingly more inclusive. Now it's common for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, asexual and other gender nonconforming characters to be featured in even the biggest comic-book franchises, and to even helm their own solo books. So join us for our 2025 Pride Month Special as the Great Pop Culture Debate attempts to name the Best LGBTQIA+ Super Hero. Characters discussed: Batwoman, Black Cat, Midnighter, Wiccan, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Miss America (America Chavez), Northstar, John Constantine, Apollo, Deadpool, Mystique, Iceman, Dreamer, Superman (Jon Kent). Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Bob Erlenback and Brendan Hay, and special guest Steve Orlando, prolific comic-book writer for Marvel, DC Comics, and other publishers, as they discuss 16 of the most-popular out super-heroes in comics. Play along at home by finding the listener bracket here. Make a copy for yourself, fill it out, and see if your picks match up with ours! To celebrate Pride Month, Thom Francis shines the spotlight three incredible local LGBT poets and their work – Elizabeth Gordon, Nancy Klepsch, and Tim Verhaegen. Pride Month is dedicated to celebrating and commemorating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride. Pride Month began after the Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests in 1969, and has since spread worldwide. Modern-day Pride Month both honors the movement for LGBT rights and celebrates LGBT culture. The first poet up is Elizabeth Gordon who read her poem "The 12th Round" at the Brass Tacks poetry and spoken word open mic on August 21, 2018 at The Low Beat. We then hear from poet, open mic host, and retired educator Nancy Klepsch. She read her poem “We All Pray for Different Reasons" at the Up The River journal launch on April 12, 2015 at McGeary's. Our final poet this week is Tim Verhaegen reading his piece "Swans" when he was the featured reader at the Poets Speak Loud series on Monday, October 26, 2015.

Go check it out!The following episode is a bit of a throwback to our Pride Month Special called “Lavender for Monsters”. It was a beautiful four part series where we explored the intersections and power within Queerness and monstrosity.I'm going to begin this episode description with a phenomenal quote introduced to me  by our guest of honor, Robin today. This quote is by Cuban American Queer Activist and Academic Jose Esteban Munoz:“Queerness is not yet here. Queerness is an ideality. Put another way, we are not yet queer, but we can feel it as the warm illumination of a horizon imbued with potentiality. We have never been queer, yet queerness exists for us as an ideality that can be distilled from the past and used to imagine a future. The future is queerness's domain. (p. 1)”― José Esteban Muñoz, Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer FuturityLet's hear it for the beauties, complexities, and histories to come for Queerness. Robin Gow (it/fae/he & él y elle) is a poet and witch from rural Pennsylvania. It is the author of several poetry, Middle Grade, and Young Adult books. It works as a community educator on topics of LGBTQIA2+ and disability justice.Robin is a literal ray of sunshine. My goodness, I'm not kidding. The work that Fae does to explore the brilliance of Queerness in all of its monstrous complexities is nothing short of astronomical. Please, go check out this beautiful soul's poetry work Monstrous Cartography  and all of the other outstanding works in Faer repertoire. Being queer is many different things, and we try to remember that our experience as white cis-gendered gay men in the UK and Denmark is not representative. Happy Pride Month, Indieventurers! Regular listeners to this 100% LGBTQIA+-fronted podcast will know that we're not exactly quietly closeted for the other 11 months of the year, but this June we've elected to challenge ourselves to make an episode that is our gayest yet. This takes the format of an open-ended chat where we discuss everything from our favourite queer characters and stories in indie games, to some maybe less-than-flawless examples of queer representation (be it explicit or just heavily implied) that we still love, to games that maybe don't have any reference to gender or sexuality at all but which still have such gay energy you'd swear they were developed exclusively by drag queens. We also chat a bit about our early memories as queer gamers in the '90s and '00s, and naturally the conversation occasionally veers into favourite AAA franchises that make at least a bit of an effort to be inclusive, even though indie games are definitely where it's at for this topic. Oh, and of course we couldn't let the opportunity pass us by to talk a little bit about our favourite gay lawyers and just what exactly makes the Ace Attorney franchise so very blatantly queer despite technically having no properly out characters. Fans of our rapid-fire conversational shifts are about to eat well as this episode takes us on a whistle-stop tour through literally dozens of our favourite queer-themed, queer-developed, and/or queer-coded games and franchises, including: Ace Attorney, Danganronpa, Doki Doki Literature Club!, Fashion Police Squad, Frog Detective, Gone Home, Goodbye Volcano High, If Found…, In Stars & Time, The Last Express, The Last of Us, Life is Strange, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, Mediterranea Inferno, The Missing: J.J. Macfield & the Island of Memories, Paradise Killer, Paralives, Resident Evil 3 (no, really!), The Sims, Simulacra, Slime Rancher, Sucker for Love: Date to Die For, Telltale's The Walking Dead, Thomas Was Alone, Tiny Life, Unpacking, Videoverse, and A Year of Springs. In this episode's hyperfixations, Liam is fascinated by the concept of building your own internet away from the dubious influences of corporate social media, and recommends checking out sites like Thinky Games and McMansion Hell if you want a return to the good old days of reading about strangers' niche interests in their own personal style of communicating. (Pssst, you should also check out sevenoutoften.co.uk and indieventurepodcast.co.uk if you want to see some sites that Liam has quite literally built himself!) Meanwhile, Rebecca has been reminded of the important work Devcats always do in keeping her mental health in check during stressful times, as she's been navigating a pile-up of life events with the help of their most recent hidden object game, A Tower Full of Cats. Finally, Rachel took our own advice from the last episode and played Crow Country in Exploration mode, and has been very happy with the result. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! SHOW NOTES: https://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2023/06/pride-month-special-with-aj-sass.html It's June and that means LGBTQ+ Pride Month, the perfect time to talk to author A.J. Sass. Andrew Sass is known for writing middle grade books featuring respectful portrayals of trans and nonbinary characters, with neurodivergent and casual Jewish representation included as well. I was excited to talk with them about a few books: debut novel Ana on the Edge from 2020, Ellen Outside the Lines, which was a 2023 Sydney Taylor Honor Book, and the new Camp QUILTBAG, co-written with Nicole Melleby. I thoroughly enjoyed all of these thoughtful, funny, and heartfelt books. Over half of the books currently being challenged by bigoted extremists are targeted for their LGBTQ+ content. In support of the queer Jewish community, for Pride Month I will post an LGBTQ+ Jewish kidlit title each day in June on The Book of Life's Facebook page at Facebook.com/Bookoflifepodcast. It should go without saying that gender identity and/or age appropriate sexual content does not automatically equal porn or obscenity. Children and teens are human beings who have bodies and experience age-appropriate sexual feelings, and sometimes they need books that will help them understand their bodies and feelings more fully. Queer books save lives, and I'll be proud to share with you excellent examples of queer Jewish representation all month long. LEARN MORE: Visit A.J. Where diversity is a fact, inclusion becomes a must. Each of us has the potential to make our own lives better, but there's a limit to progress without social interactions. If we want TRUE Progress, we need to move as one, as a society, as a specie, towards the direction of BETTER – and this begins with INCLUSION.  And there's nothing more inclusive than Health and Wellness. Regardless of demographics…  We all live and breathe. We all need to take care of our minds and bodies. And all of us can benefit from good health. This is the message Martin Balcaitis and Nate Chang want to share with all of us.  Martin and Nate are Chief Marketing Officers for StretchLab and YogaSix, respectively; both boutique fitness brands are part of Xponential Fitness.  Martin and Nate are also seasoned veterans in franchising in their own right, with the former having taken key roles under brands like Krispy Kreme and Denny's, and the latter, having worked with Del Taco, Rita's, and UFC Gym.Both powerhouses, despite working on 2 separate brands, agree that the marketing function is integral to the success of any business. It's through marketing best practices that a brand builds consistency, drives alignment, and makes sure the touch, feel, look – the overall concept of a brand – are in sync.  When you can ensure synchronicity, a brand's voice becomes so powerful enough to deliver a message consumers resonate with AND will respond to.  Martin and Nate work tirelessly to drive Xponential Fitness's message…  Everyone has something to gain from their brand and the health and wellness space.Whether you're looking for a job, a way to improve your health, a way to help others build strong minds and bodies, or you have a desire to improve your quality of life through financial freedom, among other endeavors, there's something in store for you!  How does Inclusion tie-in with Diversity? This month, in honor of Pride, we're going to be bringing you an Outward episode every week. You'll still get the biggie on June 22, with Pride and Provocations, the Gay Agenda, and all the usual fun, but we're also going to supply some shorter snacks of gay goodness every Wednesday. We've got some great things lined up--interviews, coverage of the big queer summer movie, and of course reflections on Pride--but we also want to share some great LGBTQ content from around the Slate podcast network. Today, it's a segment from a recent episode of Mom and Dad Are Fighting, Slate's parenting podcast. In light of the attacks on trans youth around the country, hosts Jamilah Lemieux, Zak Rosen, and Elizabeth Newcamp invited Outward's own Jules Gill-Peterson onto the show to provide some historical context and offer advise on what people can do to support trans kids and their parents. The Mom and Dad Are Fighting episode was produced by Rosemary Belson and Jasmine Ellis. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
