Swim with Annie Podcast Episode 2 | Passion for water. Conversation with Eileen Hall, Saint Michael's College Women's & Men's Swimming and Diving Head Coach & Aquatics Professional. Eileen Hall returns for her 14th season as head coach of the Saint Michael's men's and women's swimming & diving programs in 2023-24, and 15th overall with the teams. Hall, whose charges lay claim to every school swimming record, is the longest-tenured women's swimming & diving head coach in College history, and enters the year one dual-meet victory short of Dave Leonard's school record (57). Hall trails Jim Donoghue '70 by one year for the longest stint guiding the men. Hall began a four-year term on the NCAA Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Rules Committee in fall 2021 as the NCAA Division II representative. She is also the College's aquatics director. Hall graduated from the NCAA Women Coaches Academy (2013) and has coached swimmers at a variety of levels, including at the University of Georgia's prestigious Bauerle Bulldog Swim Camp (2019). In summer 2016, she was the only woman invited to staff the Northeast Swimming Prospect Showcases in Bristol, R.I. Hall has earned her Level II certification through the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA), and is also qualified as a coach with the United States Swimming Association. She has attended ASCA clinics in Florida, Massachusetts and New Jersey since 2007. A standout amateur swimmer, Hall was an All-America at Glens Falls (N.Y.) High School in 1986, and went on to earn an athletic scholarship at Division I Bucknell University. Hall held high school state records at Glens Falls until 2002, and was inducted into the Glens Falls High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. Did you know that the first black man to own a production company was from Chicago. My guest, actor Dave Leonard, and I take a deep dive into black excellence in media. David Leonard's career spans more than two decades in the entertainment industry. He got his early start working on several major feature films as a production assistant and transitioned into the music business working in radio and several years as a regional promotion director with Interscope/Geffen Records traveling with and promoting artists such as 50 Cent, Robin Thicke, The Pussycat Dolls, Gwen Stefani, Common, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg and many more. Welcome to another episode of #TipTopTipsEdu. In this episode, we were delighted to have the opportunity to interview someone who has been pivotal in supporting many educators across the country with their teaching of Computing. A founder of one of the UK's longest running Twitter chats all focused on the teaching of Computing, #caschat, Andy Colley has had a broad experience in his career within education. A former school IT technician and subsequently teacher of Computing and now Director of Computing at Laurus Cheadle Hulme school in the Northwest of England, Andy's been a CAS Master Teacher, Teaching and Learning Lead Practitioner, Advanced Skills Teacher and much more, including hosting the popular Learning Dust podcast with friend of NetSupport and ANME (Association of Network Managers in Education) Ambassador, Dave Leonard. We were delighted to get the opportunity to quiz Andy on many aspects of the role of Computing within education, both from secondary and primary school perspectives. We covered lots of topics including:1. What tips would you offer to somebody new to role of Head of Computing?2. What do you see as being the difference between being a subject teacher and a subject leader? What advice would you give your earlier career self?3. Leading Computing at secondary is different to leading Computing at primary. What do you see those differences as being and what would you say the key focuses should be for each?4. Can you share any resources that you think would be useful, plus any people/blogs you would recommend following on social media?  5. Are there any paid-for resources that you would recommend utilising?6. Network managers often express concern over children coding programs that can create executables. Do you have any advice on how to balance their security concerns, particularly as students develop their skills and use more technical software at a level that can facilitate curriculum whilst ensuring security?Running through Andy's answers like a pattern through a stick of rock was his core desire to both improve pupil outcomes and support colleagues in their work, whilst keeping approaches grounded in evidence-informed practice. We also look at the collectability of TV guides, which are the covers that are most in demand, what condition is most desirable, and are issues with mailing labels desirable? In addition, Dave offers us hints on starting a TV Guide collection and tips on storing and preserving them. All in all a fascinating look at this staple of TV watching back in the day. Mike and Smitty welcome their good friend Dave Leonard back to the Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site microphones. Dave is author of "Aircheck, The Story of Top 40 Radio in San Diego". On this episode, we first look back, or rather listen back to some early radio jingles, from the 50s and 60s. These identifiers, used by stations around the country, helped to give a radio station its personality and help identify it from others that might be running a similar format. As the competition tightened in radio after the beginning of the TV era, radio stations found themselves in need of standing out from other local stations. Jingles helped out in this process and are well remembered to this day. As time went on, they got shorter and shorter until virtually disappearing, and we have examples of several from the San Diego market back in the day. On the second half of our show, we look back at some of the gimmicks that were used by your favorite DJs of the past, in order to help establish their on-air personalities. Such things as catchy names, outfits or costumes, sound effects, fictional characters, and many others were employed by air personalities in an effort to distinguish themselves from other talent and often these examples of shtick are why we remember someone from long ago who was once on the air. Dave talks to us about radio station owners, innovators, and trailblazers that were found behind the scenes in Top 40 Radio back in the 50s and 60s. These individuals, although not as well known as the radio personalities heard on their stations, were the ones that made the rules, put up the money, and were the engines that drove the various radio stations. It was their decisions that set up formats, styles, imaging, and in selecting air talent to be heard over their respective stations. On this episode, Dave talks about buildings in the San Diego area that were once radio stations. In the early days, radio stations were located in hotel buildings, office buildings, and later in specialized buildings to house stations. As time went on, stations found homes in shopping centers and areas that were more accessible to the public. Dave talks about some of these interesting places that are still well remembered. The second half of our show is about radio station promotions. How radio stations would compete by holding all kinds of contests and events that would involve the public. These contests drew listeners and were very popular with individuals looking to win a prize. As time went on, the contests grew with higher and higher cash prizes and such gifts as cars, and even houses! All sorts of zany contests went on in those days when rules and guidelines were much looser.
