Plants, Politics and Empire in Ancient Rome (Cambridge University Press, 2022) by Dr. Annalisa Marzano investigates the cultural and political dimension of Roman arboriculture and the associated movement of plants from one corner of the empire to the other. It uses the convergent perspectives offered by textual and archaeological sources to sketch a picture of large-scale arboriculture as a phenomenon primarily driven by elite activity and imperialism. Arboriculture had a clear cultural role in the Roman world: it was used to construct the public persona of many elite Romans, with the introduction of new plants from far away regions or the development of new cultivars contributing to the elite competitive display. Exotic plants from conquered regions were also displayed as trophies in military triumphs, making plants an element of the language of imperialism. Dr. Marzano argues that the Augustan era was a key moment for the development of arboriculture and identifies colonists and soldiers as important agents contributing to plant dispersal and diversity. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Dylan Daisuke Loy Saito is from Portland, OR & Vancouver, WA and is a PNW-ISA Member (former Editor-in-chief), ISA Certified Arborist & TRAQ qualified, an ODA Public Pesticide Applicator , FEMA Incident Commander, ODOT Traffic Controller, and holds the Adult Mental Health Aid Certification.Dylan was born and raised on a volcano in the Pacific Ocean.  It taught him to connect with the planet and forced symbiosis with nature.  It was this life experience where he learned the gift of ALOHA, and still shares and practices this everyday. After migrating to Oregon in 96', it became obvious he landed on a much bigger island than he grew up on, with more forests, wildlife, and people. It was here Dylan found his calling to share his love of nature with everyone through Arboriculture.  He worked with a local tree company as a "branch manager", and literally learned the ropes of aerial access in trees.  10 years went by, worked with several premium tree care providers, career volunteer with multiple green industry nonprofits, and became a municipal Arborist with the City of Portland.  It was in this role he utilized all his career experiences to reach an entire city of tree-centric communities!  Dylan spent years volunteering with the PNW-ISA regional chapter as a judge for the regional climbing competitions, as the Editor of the Chapter publication, speaker and presenter at multiple Annual conferences, and co-founder of the PNW Tree Failure Database with Chris Rippey and Jonathan Pywell. Dylan has now been in the industry for over 20 years, and still sharing the ALOHA he was gifted long ago.  He enjoys spending time with his son Ronin and daughter Hana, and teaching them the same connection with our planet.  _______________________________________________________________________Patreon: http://patreon.com/TheMunicipalArboristInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_municipal_arborist/Questions or comments?themunicipalarborist@gmail.comThank you to our sponsors:Davey Resource GroupArbsessionWinkler Tree & Lawn Care

We're diving into Tree: Exploring the Arboreal World—a seriously stunning collection of art, history, and culture, centred around the human-tree connection.  This book documents the historical significance of trees throughout human history, society and culture. This really is the coffee table book to end all coffee table books for anyone with even so much as a passing interest in trees. About Tree: Exploring the Arboreal World This exquisite survey presents a breathtaking sequence of full-page images – from landscape paintings and botanical drawings to ancient frescos, vintage book illustrations and contemporary photographs – revealing the tree as a source of inspiration throughout history. Spanning continents and cultures, Tree reflects the diversity of its subject, depicting giant sequoias, cherry blossoms, palms, poplars, ginkgoes and other species found across Earth's forest biomes, in a wide-ranging selection of visuals dating from Ancient Greece to the present day. More than 300 images include Roman stone mosaics, illustrated Norse myths, Edo-period woodblock prints and living tree installations, each lavishly reproduced. Curated by an international panel of botanists, naturalists, art historians and other experts, the images expand the definition of botanical art, together forming a vibrant, vital homage to the natural world. About Tony Kirkham Tony Kirkham is a renowned British arboriculturist and tree expert, best known for his lifelong dedication to the care, study, and preservation of trees. He served as the Head of Arboretum, Gardens, and Horticultural Services at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where he played a pivotal role in maintaining one of the world's most diverse tree collections. Over his distinguished career, Kirkham became an authoritative figure in tree health, conservation, and education, helping to shape public understanding of trees' importance to ecosystems and human culture. He has participated in several international expeditions, collecting seeds and studying trees in countries such as China, Japan, and Chile, to enhance Kew's collections and support global conservation efforts. In addition to his practical work, Tony Kirkham is a popular figure in the media and has authored several books, including Remarkable Trees and Essential Pruning Techniques. He has also been featured in television series like BBC's The Trees That Made Britain, where he shared his extensive knowledge of how trees are woven into the fabric of human history and culture. Throughout his career, he's received numerous accolades, including an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to arboriculture, in recognition of his contributions to tree preservation and education. His work continues to inspire tree enthusiasts and professionals alike, highlighting the deep connection between trees and humanity. Here's a recipe to try. While this spray is all-natural, it can harm beneficial insects like bees, so be sure to spray at a time when bees aren't active (early morning and late evening). Keep an eye out for bird nests and avoid spraying near them. And remember, you wouldn't want to get this in your eyes or on your skin, so handle it with care!Garlic Fruit Tree SprayGarlic is known for its strong scent, which can deter many types of pests, from aphids to caterpillars and even some types of fungi. Ingredients:1 pound of garlic1 gallon of water (rainwater is best)Instructions:Peel and Mince: Start by peeling the garlic cloves. Then, mince or finely chop them to release the essential oils. The finer, the better.Simmer: Combine the minced garlic with water in a large pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer (not a full boil) and let it cook for about 20 minutes. This process infuses the water with garlic's active compounds.Cool and Strain: After simmering, take the pot off the heat and let it cool. Once it's cool, strain the mixture to remove the garlic pieces. A cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer works great for this. You want the liquid as clear as possible to prevent any sprayer clogs.Dilute (Optional): Depending on what you're dealing with, you might want to dilute the mixture. A common approach is to dilute the concentrated garlic water with more water. This step is adjustable based on your needs and the sensitivity of your plants.Bottle Up: Pour the strained, cooled liquid into a spray bottle or a larger sprayer for application. It's ready to use!Apply: Spray it on the leaves of your fruit trees, covering both the tops and undersides where pests like to hide. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to apply, avoiding the hot midday sun to reduce the risk of burning the leaves.Tips:Storage: You can store the garlic spray in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze it in an ice cube tray and thaw cubes as needed.Test: Always test the spray on a small area of the plant first to ensure it doesn't react badly.Reapply: After rain or watering, you might need to reapply, as it can wash off.
