Since the U.S. president has been talking about annexing Canada, there's been a surge of pride in Canadian identity. Yet over many years, Canadians have struggled to define their culture as separate from the U.S. since the two are intertwined, especially as it relates to most genres of the arts. What set Canada apart? And do Canadian art and artists need a renaissance? We ask, David Leonard, executive director of the Writers Trust Fund of Canada; Andrew Cash, president and CEO of CIMA; Marsha LEderman, arts journalist; and Tonya Williams, founder of the Reelworld film festival.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Passage: 9 And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,' 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. 11 Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children. 12 But you said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.'” 22 The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28 Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29 Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” (Genesis 32:9-12, 22-30 ESV) Song: I Surrender (https://open.spotify.com/track/13p3U002Sv8z722mFjTuWi?si=2de2e578d94b40e6) by David Leonard, Jason Ingram, Leslie Jordan Lyrics: The riches of this world will fade The treasures of our God remain Here I empty myself to owe this world nothing And find ev'rything in You I surrender I surrender I surrender all to You Take my life a sacrifice In You alone I'm satisfied Here I empty myself to owe this world nothing And find ev'rything in You Oh oh ev'rything in You Not my will but Yours be done Not my strength but Yours alone Nothing else but You O Lord I find ev'rything in You Prayer: Spirit of Christ… Make me strong, not with the strength of recklessness, but with that strength which comes from an increased burden of care. Inspire me with your sacrificial love, and I shall be a stranger to selfish fear; I shall have the courage to dare all things when I am made a captain in your band. Amen.  -George Matheson

Passage: 1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. 6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen. -The Book of Common Prayer

Sam McCabe, a singer-songwriter and worship leader from Houston, Texas, speaks with Mike about quarterly preaching, and the pitfalls and opportunities that are available to those who preach messages and then wait three months until the next time! He speaks about the dangers of being over-prepared, and the opportunities to meditatively think through a passage and its implications in the long gestation period leading up to a teaching. Sam also talks about the relationship between the teaching of the Word and the worship of the church - which one prepares for the other? Additionally there is some very practical advice on how late in the week a preaching pastor should suggest songs to the worship team!  Sam endeavors to craft songs that resonate with the depth and complexity of real life. From moments of profound joy to the depths of grief, from the peaks of hope to the valleys of loss, Sam's music explores the entirety of the human experience, intertwining themes of sanctification, doubt, and unwavering faith. His artistic journey surged forward with the release of his 2020 single "I Want To Serve God," marking the beginning of a prolific career. Subsequent singles, such as "Christ Be In My Heart" featuring the acclaimed Kristene DiMarco from Bethel Music, and "Jesus Loves the World" featuring Leeland, further solidified his presence in the music scene. Sam's albums, "Altar Fire I" and "Altar Fire II," delve into the transformative journey of following Jesus, offering listeners a soul-stirring exploration of faith and spiritual growth. Adding to his impressive repertoire, Sam is set to unveil his highly anticipated full-length live worship album, "The Death of Death," in early September of this year. Boasting collaborations with renowned artists including Pat Barrett, Leeland, Andy Squyres, and his own wife, Samantha McCabe. Why are we here on earth? And where do we go after we die? We've all asked these questions hoping to discover the purpose of life. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—believe that God has a plan for us. It's called the plan of salvation, and it contains the answers to life's questions. Jesus Christ is the central figure in God's plan. Before we were born on earth, we lived as spirit children of our Heavenly Father. He sent us to earth to receive a physical body and to learn and grow through life's experiences. God wants us to learn to do good and follow His Son, Jesus Christ. One way we show our love for God is by obeying His commandments. Of course, God knew we would make mistakes. As part of the plan of salvation, Jesus Christ would be born on earth. He would teach us, establish His Church, and suffer and die for our sins. Because He suffered all things, He can provide us relief from our sorrows and sufferings. Jesus Christ's sacrifice enables us to repent and be forgiven of our sins and mistakes. Learn more: Plan of Salvation- https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/s... I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me.     ACU Endorsed Charities -------------------------------------------------------- Pre-Born! Today, our interdenominational Christian ministry serves the poor in primarily 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Thanks to our faithful donors, we are able to provide food, housing, healthcare, education, fresh water, emergency relief, micro-enterprise solutions and much more. We are proud to have fed millions of people and provided more than 15.7 billion dollars in aid. Our faith inspires us to be an organization built on compassion, and motivated by love. Our mission is to bring relief to the poorest of the poor in the countries where we serve. We strive to reflect God's unconditional love. It's a sacrificial love that embraces all people regardless of race or religion. We believe that we can show His love by serving the “least of these” on this earth as Christ challenged us to do in Matthew 25. We pray that by God's grace, and with your support, we can continue to bring relief to the suffering and hope to the hopeless. --------------------------------------------------------

Steve and his wife, Lisa (of Lisa Leonard Designs) are the parents of two sons: David, 21 and Matthias, 19. Their world was changed dramatically when David was born with a rare genetic disorder, Cornelia DeLang Syndrome. You can read about it here.  I first met the Leonards when they moved to San Luis Obispo when Steve became our Family and College Pastor. When Lisa's jewelry took off, Steve then moved out of formal ministry to help manage their fast-growing business. He discusses the challenges he faced in changing roles and parenting a boy becoming a man and moving off to college as well as one who will never move out and move on. But looking back, it's clear that the Lord is with me through them all. In each moment of our lives, God is good, all the time, and that never changes.” The song is also becoming an anthem at radio. As his fastest-rising song to date, “Goid Lord” is already top 20 and continuing to climb. Along with being a husband and father, David Leonard can easily say his other love and passion is his work. “I have fallen in love with the community around me and am honored to be a part of it. I feel blessed that I get to help artists and songwriters craft beautiful things, and I feel blessed that I get to share what God is doing in my life through my own songs. For me, music has always been about creating environments for people to experience God in a brand new way. That's hope now, that when you turn the songs on in your car or we're in a night of worship, or anywhere you're listening, you feel like you get to experience God. It's prayer that I continue to carry that spirit of ushering in that presence of what He does.”   Where to Find David Leonard: https://www.davidleonardmusic.com/ https://davidleonardmusic.lnk.to/instagramAW https://davidleonardmusic.lnk.to/TiktokAW https://davidleonard.lnk.to/youtubeAW https://davidleonardmusic.lnk.to/FacebookAW   Where to Find Tamra: LetLet'snnect about the Book Retreat, F.I.T. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

In his song "Good Lord," David Leonard sings about looking back to see all that God has done, which provides the foundation for his declaration about the goodness of God. This is a celebrated practice throughout Scripture. This week we soak in a Psalm of Remembrance and learn the value of remembering and rehearsing the goodness of God. In this episode, I discuss the following: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture – this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Read in context Listen to an audio version of the text Read aloud Repetition Make a list Start with God Follow the cross-references Looking for the songwriter's purpose - Psalm 78:1-4 The types of Psalms found in Scripture Psalm 78 as a didactic psalm - intended to instruct Reasons to teach our children/others the truths of Scripture - Psalm 78:5-8 Following the cross-references to the historical narrative summarized in Psalm 78 Three times the psalmist highlights the people testing God - Psalm 78:18, Psalm 78:41, Psalm 78:56) How when we test God in our hearts, it often comes from a false narrative The root of the testing was unbelief and a lack of trust in His saving power - Psalm 78:21-22 Another reason the people tested God -- they did not remember His power or the day when He redeemed them - Psalm 78:40-42 A warning to remind us that remembering what God has done is not enough - Psalm 78:35-37   Why did they test God? Because they did not remember His power or the day when He redeemed them.     More Than a Song Playlist Additional Resources Lyrics - NewReleaseToday.com I didn't use them on the podcast, but the questions in the call out box in Psalm 78 in the Experiencing God Study Bible were so good Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament - Amazon Paid Link My new favorite Bible Study Software - Logos Bible Software Affiliate Link This Week's Challenge Spend some time in Psalm 78 this week. Read and listen to it repetitively before interacting with the text. When you sit down to interact with the text, start with God. What can you learn about his character, conduct, and concerns? This episode of The Walk features worship artist, songwriter, and worship leader Patrick Mayberry and his wisdom could apply to anyone leading a team in any setting. He brings a great combination of practical advice for those on worship teams, as well as some great inspiration based on 2 Corinthians 10.2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (ESV) For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…For those of us in leadership, having a grasp on the vision God has given you for your business, church, or ministry, and passing that vision along to your team can not only inspire, but it can motivate your team to pursue excellence in the practical applications of their giftings. The abilities that God has given us, when used for Kingdom purpose, destroys lies and attacks set against us in the spiritual relm that manifest in the physical realm. Use your “weapons” today, whether that be leading worship, doing taxes, or fixing cars, for God's glory and you'll see strongholds destroyed, in the mighty name of Jesus. - - - - - -Sponsor InformationWorship Leader Institutehttps://www.worshipleaderinstitute.com/coaching- - - - - -Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. The title track hit the Top 15 at Christian radio, and recently the Top 200 on CCLI's Top 2,000 US chart; and “Breakthrough Miracle Power” made a significant splash as well. Opening Song: O Lord, open our lips And our mouths will declare your praise. Glory be to the Father, And to the Son, And to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, Is now and ever shall be, World without end, Amen. The Scripture for today is 1 Kings 8:1, 6, 10-11, 22-30, and 41-43. Let's prepare our hearts to hear from God's Word as we listen to You Will Remain by David Leonard, David Wood, and Leslie Jordan. The opening percussion without harmony establishes a primary steadiness--a weight placed on the foundational aspects of our God. One line is isolated, with a spotlight of harmonic intensity on the words “You are the Great I Am.” As the song continues, “through all things, the Lord remains.” Lyrics: You, Oh Lord are my stay Humbly came My soul to save To light the way, oh All I have is found in You Christ in me, all things true All things pure All things good You are the Great I Am So unchanging Your promise is sure Never ending Your love will endure You were, You will be You always are the Great I Am You, Oh Lord will remain When everything else Fades away You, Oh Lord will remain So unchanging Your promise is sure Never ending Your love will endure You were, You will be You always are the Great I Am Hallelujah, hallelujah Your love never fails Hallelujah, hallelujah Your love never fails Passage: 1 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the fathers' houses of the people of Israel, before King Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion. 6 Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place in the inner sanctuary of the house, in the Most Holy Place, underneath the wings of the cherubim. 10 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the LORD, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD. 22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven, 23 and said, “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart; 24 you have kept with your servant David my father what you declared to him. You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day. 25 Now therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father what you have promised him, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.' 26 Now therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you have spoken to your servant David my father. 27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built! 28 Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O LORD my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you this day, 29 that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you have said, ‘My name shall be there,' that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place. 30 And listen to the plea of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. And listen in heaven your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive. 41 “Likewise, when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a far country for your name's sake 42 (for they shall hear of your great name and your mighty hand, and of your outstretched arm), when he comes and prays toward this house, 43 hear in heaven your dwelling place and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to you, in order that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and that they may know that this house that I have built is called by your name. (1 Kings 8:1, 6, 10–11, 22–30, 41–43 ESV) Musical Reflection: All to Jesus I Surrender (SURRENDER) by Winfield S. Weeden Reflection Notes: This tune was originally intended to have two-part harmonies on the verse and four-part harmonies of the refrain; the additional harmonic fullness adds to the repeated emphasis of the words “I surrender all.” Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. Amen.
