From immigrating to the U.S. at 12 years old to representing Cape Verde at the Olympics, Ruben Sança's story is one of consistency, patience, and staying in it long after most people step away.Ruben Sança is a Cape Verdean Olympian and elite distance runner who competed in the 5,000 meters at the 2012 Olympic Games in London after previously representing Cape Verde at the 2011 World Championships. He is a former standout at UMass Lowell, earning multiple All-America honors and helping lead the program to conference championships during his collegiate career. Sança holds multiple Cape Verdean national records and has run personal bests of 1:05 in the half marathon and 2:18 in the marathon while competing internationally and across the U.S. road racing circuit. In addition to competing, he coaches athletes and works professionally in leadership roles focused on education and opportunity for students.Ruben talks about how his relationship with running has evolved over time, from thinking he was “running across the country” in middle school to building the kind of durability that allows him to train at a high level for decades. There's also a constant theme of balance. Balancing training with a career. Knowing when to push and when to back off. Building a life that supports running, not one that's consumed by it.Jon and Ruben get into:• growing up in Boston as an immigrant and finding running by accident• why he never wanted to think of himself as “gifted”• building durability and handling high mileage over time• transitioning from track to the marathon• representing Cape Verde at the 2012 Olympics• why he's going after LA 2028 at age 41• managing 100+ mile weeks with a full-time job• what sustainable excellence actually looks like• confidence, belonging, and showing up to races differently• the growth of running culture in Dorchester and Roxbury• why community matters more than paceThis is a conversation for anyone trying to figure out how to do both, pursue something meaningful while building a full life around it.Stay connected:Follow Ruben: https://www.instagram.com/rubenpsanca/This episode is supported by:Precision Fuel & Hydration - Dial your fueling in this year. In 2026, he reached the pinnacle of the sport, winning a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks. In the latest episode of the ‘Cat Tales' podcast with Paul Grua, Shaheed reflects on his remarkable journey—from signing with Weber State to becoming a Super Bowl champion. He also shares memories from his time at Weber State, his success returning kicks, and his passion for mentoring younger players. In four NFL seasons, Shaheed has earned two Pro Bowl selections while appearing in 51 regular season games with 32 starts. He has recorded three punt return touchdowns and one kickoff return touchdown, along with 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns. In the playoffs, he added a kickoff return touchdown in Seattle's win over San Francisco. From 2017 to 2021, Shaheed played in 53 games at Weber State, helping lead the Wildcats to four consecutive Big Sky titles and four FCS Playoff appearances, including the semifinals in 2019. He remains the only player in school history to earn All-America honors four times and is one of just four players to be named first-team All-Big Sky four times. Shaheed finished his collegiate career as the FCS all-time leader in kickoff return touchdowns with seven and holds Weber State's record for career kickoff return average at 29 yards. He totaled 5,478 all-purpose yards—third most in school history—and ranks third in punt return yardage. Remembering Dwight “Bo” Lamar and Louisiana’s High Scoring Basketball Era

News of this week’s passing of former University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL-Lafayette) basketball star Dwight “Bo” Lamar sparked a lot of memories.  Lamar was 74 and passed away at a nursing home in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. College basketball in Louisiana when Lamar played during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s was filled with dominant scorers and very little defense.  The word “defense” seemed to have been banned during this period. Explosive offense had become the name of the game. This brief period was defined by expert marksmanship and crowd-pleasing showmanship.  The high scoring antics of college basketball players like LSU’s “Pistol” Pete Maravich and the University of Houston’s “Big E” Elvin Hayes (born in Rayville, Louisiana) captured the imagination of fans. Less than an hour west of Pistol Pete Maravich and LSU, Bo Lamar and the USL Ragin’ Cajuns were entertaining fans in front of packed basketball arenas, too. Lamar was a virtual basketball scoring machine for the Ragin’ Cajuns from 1969-1973.  He averaged 31.2 points per game over his entire four-year college basketball career.  A first-team All-American as a senior, he was joined on that squad by future basketball Hall-of-Famers Bill Walton of UCLA and David Thompson of North Carolina State. The 6’2” Bo Lamar had one of the best jump shots I have ever seen. He elevated off the floor with ease and then lofted up a high arcing shot from long-distance.  This came nearly 20 years before college basketball would adopt the three-point shot.  He would have averaged over 40 points per game with today’s three-point line. Bo Lamar glided down the basketball court with ease in leading USL’s frantic fast breaks.  He bombed-in a school-record 62 points during a game against Northeast Louisiana University (now UL-Monroe). Scoreboards routinely registered more than 100 points during Ragin’ Cajun basketball games in this era. A 1984 Louisiana Sports Hall-of-Fame inductee, Bo Lamar opted to play professional basketball for the ABA’s San Diego Conquistadors in 1973.  He scored 50 points in one game during his rookie year while averaging nearly 21 points per game. After several years in the pro ranks, Lamar later became part of the radio broadcast team for Ragin’ Cajuns basketball games. Mike Green at Louisiana Tech became one of Bo Lamar’s biggest foes If you have watched current NBA star Kevin Durant of the Houston Rockets, he looks and plays like a modern version of former Louisiana Tech basketball star, Mike Green.  The 6’10” Green played for the Bulldogs from 1969-1974. Mike Green was listed as a center but possessed an incredible outside shooting touch to stretch the opposing defenses. Like Bo Lamar at USL, Green was a prolific college basketball scorer.  He averaged 31 points per game as a senior at Louisiana Tech.  Add a 15.4 rebounds per game career average, and you understand why Mike Green earned the AP’s Small College Player of the Year award in 1973. He was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall-of-Fame in 1996. A friend of mine attended Louisiana Tech in 1971 during the Mike Green basketball era. He recalled a highly anticipated home game against high-scoring Bo Lamar and the nationally ranked Ragin’ Cajuns.  Fans lined up for hours hoping to gain entrance to watch this game.  Mike Green scored 22 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and blocked numerous shots as the Bulldogs raced to 103-94 win at Tech’s Memorial Gymnasium. Future Louisiana Tech Hall-of-Fame women’s basketball coach Leon Barmore also witnessed that encounter.  He recalled, “It was the greatest game ever at Louisiana Tech – bar none!” While he was a sophomore, Mike Green’s Louisiana Tech team averaged 101 points per game for the entire season. Defense?  What defense? Mike Green passed away in 2018 at the age of 67. Time to celebrate Centenary College center Robert Parish! Shreveport’s 7’1” center Robert Parish took Louisiana’s top college basketball player baton from Bo Lamar and Mike Green during the early 1970’s. Robert Parish played high school basketball in the late 1960’s during a difficult time when federal integration mandates forced some schools to close.  Parish and his fellow Union High School students suddenly found themselves being bussed to nearby Woodlawn High School. Though this period caused angst for both students and teachers, Woodlawn’s basketball team morphed into a state powerhouse with the addition of talented center Robert Parish. He led Shreveport’s Woodlawn High School to the Class 4A state basketball title as a senior in 1972.  Parish was named a national high school All-American. To the dismay of national college recruiters, Robert Parish chose to stay in Shreveport and attend Centenary College.  As a freshman, Parish lined-up to play in one game against Louisiana Tech’s talented senior big man Mike Green. Green dazzled the crowd by scoring 40 points on the young Robert Parish. Robert Parish continued to work and improve his game every year.  He collected a school record 33 rebounds in one game.  Parish’ gifted shooting touch produced 25 points per game for Centenary.  His dominant offensive and defensive play as a senior led to a first-team college basketball All-America selection. Parish became a first round draft choice of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. Traded four years later to the Boston Celtics, Robert Parish (along with Larry Bird and Kevin McHale) won three NBA titles and played 21 seasons in the NBA.  Parish was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Naismith Basketball Hall-of-Fame in 2003. Have you heard of Olympic gold medal winner Glynn Saulters? Today’s story about talented Louisiana college basketball stars of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s wouldn’t be complete without mentioning an Olympic gold medal winner. In the year 1968, Northeast Louisiana University (now ULM) basketball star Grady Glynn Saulters was nearly invisible on the national college basketball stage. The Lisbon, Louisiana native didn’t possess the blazing court speed of Southwestern Louisiana’s Bo Lamar or the shot-blocking skills of Louisiana Tech’s Mike Green. Oh, but Glynn Saulters could shoot a basketball with the best of them. He became a prolific college scorer. Saulters averaged a nifty 31 points per game as a senior in 1968 to lead the Gulf States Conference in scoring.  Not too shabby. The Olympics games were being held in Mexico City a few months following Saulters’ senior season.  The year 1968 was an extremely politically charged period as Dr. Martin Luther King and presidential candidate Bobby Kennedy were assassinated.  Several top college basketball players such as Lew Alcindor and Elvin Hayes decided not to even try-out for the US Olympic team in 1968. That opened the door for NLU’s 6’2” guard Glynn Saulters to qualify for the Olympic basketball team. His competition included stars like high-scoring Pistol Pete Maravich of LSU and Niagara guard Calvin Murphy.  Surprisingly, neither Maravich nor Murphy made the final cut.  Ditto for Kentucky’s Dan Issel and Purdue sharpshooter Rick Mount. But Glynn Saulters from tiny Class “C” Lisbon High School in north Louisiana made the US team. Legendary college basketball coach Hank Iba’s “No Name” US Olympic basketball squad was comprised of several small college role players and just a few top college stars. Future NBA Hall-of-Fame forward Spencer Haywood and guard JoJo White led the US team in scoring.  Glynn Saulters and the US Olympic team went a perfect 9-0 in Mexico City to bring home the gold medal. Glynn Saulters was inducted into the ULM Sports Hall-of-Fame in 1978 and into the Louisiana Sports Hall-of-Fame in 1981. Don’t forget “AJ from the Parking Lot!” New Orleans’ Cohen High School basketball player Aaron James journeyed northward from the Crescent City to Grambling State University to begin a memorable college basketball career.  The 6’8” sharpshooting forward poured in more than 32 points per game as a senior at Grambling to become the Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year in ’73-74.  He earned the nickname “AJ from the Parking Lot” for his uncanny accuracy on long-distance shots.  Aaron James was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Minden and Webster High School product Louis “Sweet Lou” Dunbar was another prolific high school scoring sensation.  This 6’9” big man also possessed a sweet jump shot.  Dunbar received numerous college scholarship offers and left his home state to play for the University of Houston in the early 1970’s.  He averaged 22 points and eight rebounds over his career with the Cougars. Louis Dunbar would join the Harlem Globetrotters and play for the next 27 years!  “Sweet Lou” is one of only eight Globetrotters to have his jersey (#41) retired.  Dunbar was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.   Let’s not forget Shreveport Valencia High School basketball star Roosevelt Fuller.  This silky-smooth high-scoring guard torched the nets for 64 points in a Shreveport high school basketball game in the late 1960’s.  Fuller averaged an incredible 44 points per game one season at Valencia High. He played college hoops from 1970-1972 at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, TX. He still holds the school scoring record of 53 points and posted a 28 points per game average as a sophomore.  Roosevelt Fuller was inducted into the Trinity Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2025. No, it wasn’t just Pistol Pete Maravich exciting Louisiana’s basketball fans during the late 1960’s into the early 70’s. This week’s passing of Dwight “Bo” Lamar served as a reminder of just how special his era of basketball was in the Pelican State. After arriving with massive expectations as a high school phenom, White immediately lived up to the hype, becoming the centerpiece of a Golden Bears resurgence that included a dominant 1991 season and a Citrus Bowl victory. A three-time first-team All-Pac-10 selection, White was a master of the "big play," utilizing elite vision and explosive speed to become Cal's all-time leading rusher with 3,360 yards—a record that stood for 15 years. His 1991 campaign was particularly legendary, as he racked up over 1,100 yards and earned second-team All-America honors, cementing his legacy as arguably the greatest pure runner to ever wear the blue and gold. (Big thanks to this suggestion by YouTube viewer @pallen1065)Deshaun Watson (Clemson): Wearing jersey 4 was a special honor, as former Tiger legend Steve Fuller allowed Clemson to un-retire the number specifically for Watson. Watson became a Clemson icon by leading the Tigers to their first national championship since 1981, capping his career with a dramatic victory over Alabama in 2017. During his prolific tenure, he achieved a stunning 32-3 record as a starter while accumulating over 10,000 passing yards and 161 total touchdowns.Dalvin Cook (Florida State):An electrifying running back who wore #4 despite it often being a QB number, breaking records for the Seminoles. Cook was one of the most accomplished running backs inFlorida State Seminoles history. He's been called "American soccer's renaissance man," and in this episode, Dr. Joe Machnik returns to trace the remarkable arc of a life spent pushing the sport forward in the United States. When Machnik first joined us for Episode 24 back in 2017, he brought a rare, firsthand view of American soccer's highs and lows. Today, with his new memoir, "From the Sandlots to the World Cup: Inside Seven Decades of American Soccer" freshly in hand, we revisit that conversation with even richer context and perspective. Dr. Joe's story began in Brooklyn, where an immigrant neighborhood and a love of the game planted the seeds for a career that would — like the domestic trajectory of the sport itself — defy easy categorization. From playing as an All-America goalkeeper at Long Island University and helping win the U.S. Open Cup with the New York Ukrainians, to coaching college teams deep into NCAA championship territory, Machnik's early years were defined by a deep connection to the grassroots of American soccer. He went on to assist the U.S. Men's National Team during its historic qualification for the 1990 World Cup — the country's first appearance in four decades — and even helped the U.S. futsal team earn a bronze medal on the world stage. But Machnik's influence didn't stop with players and coaches. In the chaotic early years of modern professional soccer in the U.S., he was one of the architects of the rules themselves. He helped devise the original rulebook for the Major Indoor Soccer League, later served as commissioner of the smaller-market American Indoor Soccer Association, and even coached the MISL's New York Arrows — bringing structure and professionalism to a game still trying to find its identity in the American sports landscape. Outdoors, his imprint has been equally deep. Machnik led refereeing operations for Major League Soccer during its formative years, establishing standards that helped turn a fledgling league into a stable, competitive professional circuit. He also directed officiating for national collegiate bodies and served as a FIFA and CONCACAF match commissioner, carrying the credibility he built in American soccer onto the global stage. Today, "Dr. Joe" is widely known as FOX Sports' Soccer Rules Analyst—the authoritative voice millions hear during World Cups, Gold Cups, MLS matches, and international tournaments — explaining the game's most controversial calls with clarity and patience. But beyond the broadcast booth, Machnik's legacy lies in the countless players, referees, coaches, administrators, and fans who came to love the game because he helped make it possible. Machnik reflects not only on the milestones of his own career, but on the larger narrative of how soccer in America has grown, stumbled, reinvented — and ultimately endured — over decades.  PLUS: Tim and Dr. Joe fret over the crassly commercial optics surrounding the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 next summer, and lament their shared frustrations — so far — in trying to obtain reasonably-priced tickets! + + +    SUPPORT THE SHOW:  Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "From the Sandlots to the World Cup: Inside Seven Decades of American Soccer": https://amzn.to/4pW6aRL SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!):  Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/

D3football.com » D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast

When the previous "biggest win in school history" is from the 1950s, replacing the entry at the top of the list means something.  Sure, you could quibble over whether a win against Syracuse from seven decades ago, or a national quarterfinal win at Brockport in 2002, or a quarterfinal win at UW-Whitewater in 2016 should be next on the list, but no regular season win, even one against Mount Union, compares with beating Mount Union at Mount Union in the playoffs.  A win of this nature is so iconic that the head coach's phone blows up, and so does the feed of everyone else even remotely associated with John Carroll football. The traffic on D3football.com nearly doubled in the course of 10 minutes. There's no pretending this is an ordinary win. And to John Carroll's credit, they didn't try to. We chat with Jeff Behrman, the JCU head coach, about having confidence in kicker Colin Schuler after a missed chip shot in the first overtime nearly cost them the game, about the key final play of the game, and about the team's return to campus, the reception, and what's next for the Blue Streaks. We bring back in former co-host Keith McMillan to break down the play, what he saw on video from his perspective as a former Division III football starting safety.  Mailbag questions came hard for this game. The one we chose to answer was whether this means that JCU is up to Mount Union's level or if Mount Union has slipped and there's just one elite team. The answer is perhaps no different than it was when Keith and Greg Thomas wrote a column under the headline "Today, we are all Mount Union" after the 2022 Stagg Bowl, for we are all chasing North Central. We take your mailbag questions. We have postgame audio from all eight games and break them all down. Keith also sits down with Johns Hopkins coach Dan Wodicka and safety Sam Bourdo. Bethel's David Geebli talks about recovering from fumbling on the first snap of the game. Susquehanna's Josh Ehrlich takes the blame for the River Hawks' slow start. Matt Walker talks about UW-River Falls' slow start, although it was fairly brief. Jesse Scott talks about what they saw that was familiar in DePauw's run defense. Berry safety Chaz Pope talks about his game-sealing interception. There's those clips and much more in this podcast. Plus we drop some scoop as to when we will release our All-America team, we answer whether we really thought Johns Hopkins lost some shine after the F&M loss and we bring the receipts to prove it (they're all on the website).  Patrick and Greg also hand out game balls, bring you through the stats of the week and we take your questions in the mailbag segment. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.

Montie Quinn should have been a household name to you already. He was a D3football.com All-America running back last season, rushing for 1,600 yards. He'd had two 200-yard rushing games already this season, he's now over 5,000 rushing yards for his career ... if you only found out about him on Saturday, or Sunday, that's a bummer. When he exploded for 522 yards in a win vs. Nichols on Saturday, you should have said, yeah, actually, I can see that happening. Quinn had an amazing Saturday, and probably spent a good amount of Sunday doing interviews. You can find his story in The Athletic, and on area TV stations, with more to come. And he chatted with us as well, just like he did this past summer. Quinn is our Fast Five guest -- sorry, our Fast 522, plus he gets a game ball, of course, and much more. Podcast 381: Montie Quinn joined us in June to talk about his goals for 2025, his preparation and more If not for that, we'd be talking even more about the incredible game that took place between John Carroll and DePauw on Saturday, one that ended in a fashion that people will talk about for years, with the sunlight all but gone and with a touchdown catch with 14.4 seconds left. We talk about the learnings for the Blue Streaks and the Tigers and yes, DePauw still has plenty of weapons. UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse had to dig into their two-deeps to find starting running backs this week, and Platteville came out on top. Hear from freshman running back Blake Bangston, who ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, as well as sophomore quarterback Nate Uselding and coach Ryan Munz about the win. Also, we'll share the story of the person who thought he held the Division III single-game rushing record some years ago, only to have it taken away. Plus, Patrick and Greg hand out game balls, so get your Roman Funk on, spotlight the unusual stats of the week, Logan Hansen talks about which teams have the best chance of getting a top-eight seed and protected home field in the playoffs, we go around each region for even more stories and much more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.

It's been a spicy past month or so and when you're coming up on a food-related holiday like the 4th of July, we're keeping the fire hot and the burgers, dogs, bratwurst, corn on the cob and more so that you can grill us with your questions. That's right -- we've got some great mailbag questions and we tackle as many of them as possible on this edition of the podcast. Plus ... This edition of the podcast is sponsored by GameStrat: The Most Reliable & Fastest In-Game Video Replay System on The Market. D-III football coaches should click here to learn more. Plus, we have three great guests to chat with in this edition of the podcast as well, which we snuck just in under the wire for June of 2025. We start with Curry running back Montie Quinn, a second team D3football.com All-America pick who had a fantastic finish to the season. We hear from him about his pursuit of the school's rushing record, who helped him get it, and why it was important that he just keep running. Plus, how did Quinn get from South Carolina to the Boston suburbs? And how is he preparing for the 2026 season and trying to improve on his record-setting performance? Blaise Faggiano, the head coach of Utica, joins the podcast this time around and since he was on the national committee at the time the whole changeover to NPI took place, and the "dials" were set in such a way to almost entirely discount strength of schedule, well, we grill him on that as well. But we also talk about how his team has benefited from taking a foreign tour trip, and what the great local specialties are in central New York, and his hopes for his team for 2025. And we visit once again with Carnegie Mellon coach Ryan Larsen -- we chatted with him briefly in Podcast 380 about his team's trip to Spain, but this conversation is about the CMU schedule for 2025, why he made it so challenging and how he thinks it will help his team improve, even if the NPI might not credit the Tartans the way we would hope. It's a great argument for still scheduling strong even if the committee doesn't want to reward that. Mailbag topics include: Is the ASC done with offers to SCAC teams, who else is looking for bowl game alliances, what's on your Fourth of July menu, what do we make of the North Central quarterback situation, why does D-III spring ball look different than the other divisions, how much will our preseason Top 12 differ from the way last season ended, and what our thoughts are on Geneva and Westminster (Pa.) not facing each other this season. Patrick and Greg cover it all in the latest edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.

“I think it's really important to celebrate the intermediate steps along the way because if you're only thinking about the highest level of the NCAA…it gets overwhelming. You have to have those goals along the way.”We're back with more Office Hours episodes. My guest today is someone that's become synonymous with Hoya distance running — Brandon Bonsey, the head men's cross country coach and longtime leader of Georgetown's storied middle-distance program. He's more than a decade into his coaching career on the Hilltop — Bonsey has guided the Hoyas to dozens of All-America honors, multiple Big East titles, and a steady presence at the national level across cross country and track. A proud alum himself, Bonsey competed for Georgetown from 2004 to 2009, and since returning to his alma mater, he's played a pivotal role in both honoring the program's legacy and evolving it for today's generation. In this episode, we talk about what it's like to coach at the place that shaped you, what he learned from mentors like Pat Henner and Chris Fox, and how he's helping develop two of the most exciting young middle-distance talents in the country — Tinoda Matsatsa and Abel Teffra. We also get into recruiting at a high-academic institution, what sets the Georgetown culture apart, and how Bonsey blends emotional investment with long-view composure as a coach. This is a great one for anyone who loves hearing how tradition meets innovation in today's NCAA coaching landscape.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Brandon Bonsey | @thebonz21 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for.
