How do companies adapt and utilize new technologies to move business models forward? Are companies adopting technology for tech sake instead of for strategic goals? How can we cut through the noise to determine what new technologies are aligned with your company? In this episode of IBM thinkLeaders podcast, we are joined by Anita Zielina (Director of News Innovation and Leadership at Craig Newmark J-School at CUNY) and David Judge (Vice President, SAP Intelligent Enterprise Solutions). We talk to Anita and David about the role of leadership in business transformation, proof of concept fatigue, and how organizations can be more agile. We also get into incorporating diverse voices in tech, navigating a future where a company’s focus is constantly shifting, and whether the Net Promoter Score (NPS) is at all worthwhile. “Being in a decision-maker role...doesn't mean you have to understand every technological development in detail because no one can know. It's not your role as a CEO, or as a COO to understand every detail in depth, but it's your role to be able to make educated assessments of what to invest in, what not to invest in, and how to change your organizational culture.” -Anita Zielina, Director of News Innovation and Leadership at Craig Newmark J-School at CUNY “You can put a hammer in somebody's hand if they don't know how to use it, they're not going to accomplish anything much less build a house.”-David Judge, Vice President, SAP Intelligent Enterprise Solutions Connect with us: @IBMthinkLeaders @Zielina @DHJudge BIOS Anita Zielina is the Director of News Innovation and Leadership at Craig Newmark J-School at CUNY. Date: February 23, 2012 Featuring: John Moore, MD, PhD Candidate, MIT Media Lab – New Media Medicine David Judge, MD, Project Leader, CIMIT Ambulatory Practice of the Future; Instructor in Medicine, Harvard Medical School New technologies by themselves cannot create more robust patient-provider partnerships. But, with a lot of ingenuity and thoughtful design, and a commitment to creating tools that help put patients more in charge of their health, technology can be a game changer. That’s the guiding principle behind some fascinating work under development at the MIT Media Lab, and that’s where this WIHI takes place for its first ever “live on location” broadcast. If you’ve never heard of NewMediaMedicine, you’re in for a treat. Using a conceptual and software platform called CollaboRhythm, researchers are designing and testing tools that offer patients real-time data about their own chronic health conditions that can then be easily conveyed to a health care provider, enabling coaching and communication practically on the spot. It might sound glib to refer to primary care as a shared environment that can be tapped on an “as-needed basis,” thanks to a couple of smart phones, but in the health care world that NewMediaMedicine envisions, the best primary care will be transformed into something less like a single office visit and more like a daily engagement with one’s health goals, with expert advice available when necessary. Joining WIHI host Madge Kaplan are two people who can explain it all. Dr. John Moore is a physician and technologist overseeing multiple projects at the Media Lab and in true “open source” fashion is eager to share what he and his colleagues are up to. Dr. David Judge’s work is closely aligned, thanks to the Ambulatory Practice of the Future at Massachusetts General Hospital, which opened its doors in July 2010. Dr. Judge talks about what it’s really like to offer a model of “continuous, customized, iterative, and well-informed care” in the environments most convenient for patients. This special “on location” WIHI is taking place on the heels of the Media Lab’s third annual Health and Wellness Innovation sprint that took place at the end of January 2012. In addition to what’s in the testing phase now, find out what teams of students, health professionals, and innovators are imagining next.

Listen NowMuch of the health care industry's effort to improve health care payment and delivery centers around improving primary care. This is largely because Americans suffer more disease/disease burden throughout their life spans compared to individuals in other industrialized countries.   This therefore makes obvious sense since primary care is the foundation upon which an effective and efficient health care/medical care program is built.  When done well primary care promotes wellness, prevents disease onset, progression, exacerbation and prevents premature death.  Primary care also moderates the need for higher cost specialty care and improves population health.  For numerous reasons, not least of which is inadequate reimbursement, primary care delivery has been sub-optimal.   New models of primary care are emerging, one termed direct primary care (noted in the ACA under Section 1301 (A) (3) and now recognized in 13 states) is showing promise in improving quality, improving patient satisfaction and lowering cost growth.      During this 21 minute conversation Dr. Judge discusses moreover the impetus for the creation of Iora Healh, how Iora's primary care delivery model works or how it is different from traditional primary care delivery, how Iora's model is staffed, IT supported and reimbursed, with whom and how it contracts and what Iora's performance data demonstrates to date. Dr. David Judge serves as Iora Health's Chief Medical Officer.  Dr. Judge joined Iora in 2014 to continue his work in improving and redesigning of primary care.  Priorto , he helped found and was the Medical Director of the Ambulatory Practice of the Future at Mass. General Hospital.  David received his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering and public health studies at Brown University and attended University of  Mass. Medical School.  He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. For more on Iora Health go to: http://www.iorahealth.com/ This is a public episode.
