In this season's Flashlight episodes, we're taking a deep dive into the history of Dungeons and Dragons. Whether you love it, hate it, or are grimly resigned to playing it because everybody already knows the rules, the long history of D&D parallels the history of modern TTRPGs. We're starting out in the 1960s and working forward to the present day. This week, we try to talk about the wargames of the pre-D&D era. Along the way, we end up exposing our lack of knowledge of 1790s Prussia, discussing the travails of tavern ownership, and announcing a wholly fictitious live podcast tour. It's our first time back in the studio one-on-one in a while, and as a result we get a little silly. Here are some links that we used in research for the episode:This guide to running a Braunstein RPG is an excellent and comprehensive resource with links to plenty of other resources. This article from Ben Robbins (the creator of Microscope!) adds some more flavour to David Wesley's history with tabletop games. The first and second volume of Strategos explore the really deep history of wargames, which were the precursor to TTRPGs.Also, in this episode, Reilly asks Jake about the history about student loans, and Jake doesn't have a good answer. Jake, who writes the show notes, is still mortified about this. Here's a very long and detailed history of student loans.Follow us wherever you get your podcasts, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube. Griff Morgan is a writer, director, and gamer whose collaboration on the “Secrets of Blackmoor” film - released in 2019 - has shone a bright light on the origins of roleplaying games rooted in the work of David Wesley and Dave Arneson. About three weeks ago now, I hopped onto Skype for a chat with Griff, ostensibly to talk about Good versus Evil. The long road trip for the Boston Celtics is nearing its conclusion. After a trip that started in Florida, crossed south of the border, and then crossed it again -- the Boston Celtics are ready to wrap things up with the New Orleans Pelicans tomorrow night. Some highlights and lowlights in games against the Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings, and San Antonio Spurs. Host Larry H. Russell will briefly recap the week as well as look ahead to Monday's game in New Orleans. David Wesley, former Boston Celtics and current color man for the Pels will return to the show for his trifecta appearance in a special edition of our Boston Celtics Pre-Game segment. New Orleans scored a big win back on Friday over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Will that get their disappointing season off the mat and carry over to a win against Boston? And how happy is Anthony Davis down in the Bayou in that current situation? Justin Poulin will also check back in for a brief segment. LHR isn't too happy with Marcus Smart continuing to miss games. Is it time to start pointing fingers at the Celtics condition staff? Oh, and that Kobe Bryant guy of the Los Angeles Lakers retired. Around the NBA in 5 will be brought in for that take. Celtics Beat is brought to you by lynda.com/clns, audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, American Farmer's Network, and Harry's. Available for download on iTunes and Stitcher Sunday, December 6, 2015. Think there's not plenty to talk about regarding the Boston Celtics? Think again. Rich Conte and Dr. Andre Snellings of Rotowire host an absolute loaded edition of Celtics Beat on The Ides of March. First, they'll speak to David Wesley, currently serving as the New Orleans Pelicans color commentator on FOX Sports New Orleans. David was a 14 year NBA veteran, and former Celtic. Rich, Dr. Snellings, and David will discuss the Pelicans and Celtics rebuilding efforts, Anthony Davis' place amongst the NBA's best, his years in Boston and Rick Pitino's decision to not re-sign him, and yes, tanking. With David being a member of the infamous 1997 Celtics squad, he'd seem to be an expert on the issue. There's more: Sean Deveney, National NBA writer for Sporting News will hop on. Sean is one of the most plugged-in NBA journalists, particularly with the Celtics. He'll let the audience know how the Celtics organization feels about this season, where the rebuilding stands, and also Rajon Rondo. What's his future with the team? Also, Sean recently broke a story regarding Kobe Bryant urging the Lakers to fire coach Mike D'Antoni at seasons end. Rich, Dre, and Sean will discuss that, Phil Jackson to the New York Knicks, and much more. And yes, Rich and Dre still have time to go Around the NBA in 5! Tune in this Saturday, March 15th at 2 PM ET/11 AM PT to Celtics Beat. Only on CLNS Radio.
