Diets don’t work. Neither do New Year’s resolutions. Just 3% of people who go on a diet successfully lose weight. Why? They’re based on the idea that if you lose weight, you’ll transform your life. In fact, you need to transform your life first, then the weight loss will happen.   Alli was a healthy plant-based holistic salad eater by day…. sugar junkie by night. Sugar addiction ruled her life. Nothing she tried ever worked. Until she met David Zappazodi. Now, her cravings for sugar have disappeared.   David Zappazodi has been a healthcare professional specializing in weight loss for over 20 years. He uses radical methods. Instead of coaching people to find their why, and motivating them to change their habits, he tells his clients to stop exercising and eat the junk foods they crave several times a day. It sounds nuts. But…. It works.   How do you transform your life first? You have to focus on the struggles that are preventing the weight loss, and then focus on the weight loss itself. To do this, David uses three brain flips that tackle cravings, overeating, and exercising.   Brain Flip Your Cravings Cravings are like bullies. You have to stand up to them in a way that lets them know you’re not going to be pushed around. Trying to avoid bullies, or fight them, doesn't work long-term. It's the same with your cravings. You might try avoiding your cravings, but that doesn’t work. Eventually the cravings win. Then you indulge and feel guilty. The only way to free yourself is to eat the food you crave… but eat it in a different pattern.   Think about it. You’ve resisted for so long, then finally you give in. In that moment when you indulge, there is pleasure. This is the core point where things need to change. If you create pain in the moment of indulgence, then you begin to flip your brain to eradicate your desire for that particular food. How? By creating a pain tool. This is a recording of what could go wrong in your life if you don’t solve this issue, which you listen to while you eat the food. By inserting pain in that indulgence, you begin to make friends with your cravings. You stop associating indulging with pleasure, and the cravings subside.   Brain Flip Overeating: The way David tackles overeating is to get his clients to split their usual portion into two plates. You eat the first one normally, but you eat the second portion while listening to another pain tool, so you learn to associate being overfull with being in pain. This creates another brain flip.   Brain Flip Exercise: David calls this the body brain flip. Now that the cravings and overeating are dealt with, it’s time to reprogram your brain to look at exercise in a completely new way. David gets his clients to create a vision tool - the opposite to a pain tool. Imagine the best that could happen to you as you transform your health and lose the weight, and listen to that audio several times a day to really connect with the feeling of joy. This turns around your usual thinking about exercise being a chore, into something you’re excited about doing. And when you’re excited about doing something, it becomes effortless.   Want more? So he developed a revolutionary strategy to reprogram your brain to give up junk food and stop over-eating for good. His ultimate goal? To eradicate world-wide obesity. We love his mission!!   But how can you do this? By creating brain-flips around your cravings.   How Do Brain Flips Work? It’s vital to understand that we have two aspects to our brain. First, there’s the thinking brain - we use it to fix problems and make our lives better. The thinking brain knows that certain foods are an issue and it wants to get rid of the craving. This is the part of the brain most of us will try to use to lose weight, and it never works. The sensory brain, on the other hand, is different - it’s the opposite of your thinking brain in so far as it has no capacity to think. It just functions through your senses - hearing, sight, smell, touch, taste - but it doesn’t have a concept of what it’s seeing, tasting, touching, smelling etc. It doesn’t identify - that’s the thinking brain’s job. Your sensory brain’s role is to keep you safe - it does that by creating familiar associations.   For example, let’s say as a child you fell and scraped your knee. Your mum bandaged it up, and gave you an ice-cream. Your thinking brain is aware the bandaging is what’s helping, but your sensory brain just links the taste of ice-cream to the physical sensation of feeling better - it creates a program that says ice-cream equals feeling good. The result? A craving for ice-cream that lasts into adulthood. The story changes, the food changes, but it’s pretty much the same for everyone and all cravings. Your thinking brain might know that this is happening, but that won’t solve the problem. Unless you can reprogram your brain, you will keep having those cravings. You need a brain-flip. To create this brain-flip, you need a pain tool.   Pain Tool: You’ve concluded that ice-cream equals safe. So you need to create a pain tool that reprograms your sensory brain to believe that ice-cream equals not safe. How? David gets his clients to make an audio that goes deep into what their life will look like if they don’t solve this problem, which they listen to whilst eating the ice-cream or whatever food they crave. This pain tool plants a seed in the sensory brain that says ice-cream is not enjoyable after all. It’s a small seed, but it begins to decrease the cravings. Within a few days, this new programming takes over. Your brain no longer associates the ice-cream with comfort, it associates it with pain. The result? You don’t crave that food any more. You are free.   And that’s just Phase 1. In Phase 2, David tackles over-eating. Where cravings tend to be an association of taste with comfort, overeating is an association between the feeling of fullness and feeling safe. This might happen because as a child you were told to finish what was on your plate, so your sensory brain created a link between overeating and feeling safe. In Phase 3, you go even deeper, by brain-flipping your beliefs about working out - making exercise so exciting you’ll be begging to get to the gym. Today, we are talking to a man who has made it his mission to transform and heal our cravings.  Not where you are feeling deprived, but where the desire is gone. This week, I had health professional and author of Immovable Heart Unstoppable Mind, David Zappasodi on the show.  He helps people that are frustrated and stuck with their weight loss goals.  He works with people who feel like they've tried everything out there, and nothing has worked. This past week I spent 8 days in the Eastern Sierras. While I originally went for nature therapy, hiking, movement, and connecting with friends, I wound up experiencing an NDE. It was the second time I was gifted one of these in 2018, except this time it happened at 12,000 feet. Illuminated by a full moon, and trying to sleep while laying on the cold gravel in a small tent at the Mount Whitney trail camp, I felt my heart pounding fast and began to realize: I couldn't breathe. After 45 minutes of attempted conscious breathing to calm my nervous system, positive affirmations, and canister oxygen, I finally accepted the truth of what had happened: AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) I made the call. At 1230am, myself and a friend packed up to leave 3 other men to summit that morning while we both walked down the trail with headlamps to lower ground. So I wouldn't die. I recovered, slept, and I write this message to you feeling great, thanks to my decision to listen to my body. My survival brain did me well, it kept me alive.
