Today on the Holistic Dentistry Show, Dr. Sanda Moldovan speaks with Tricia Nelson, an emotional eating expert and TEDx speaker whose talk has garnered over 2 million views on YouTube. Tricia is the author of the bestselling book "Kill Your Hunger: Seven Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating" and host of the Heal Your Hunger show. As a recovered emotional eater who lost 50 pounds by addressing the underlying causes of her overeating, Tricia shares profound insights about the real reasons behind our food struggles. Tricia explains that overeating is rarely about the food itself but rather about "what's eating you." She describes how emotional eaters use food to cope with uncomfortable feelings, change their mood, or numb emotional pain. Rather than focusing on dieting, which has a 98% failure rate, Tricia emphasizes the importance of addressing the root emotional causes that drive overeating behaviors. She outlines what she calls "the anatomy of the emotional eater" - a set of 24 personality traits that have nothing to do with food but contribute to problematic eating patterns. The conversation explores how people-pleasing, perfectionism, and poor boundaries create the perfect storm for emotional eating. Tricia explains her "PEP test" (Painkiller, Escape, Punishment) to help identify the emotional drivers behind unhealthy eating behaviors. She offers practical advice for breaking free from emotional eating, including establishing regular meal patterns, developing self-awareness about true hunger versus emotional hunger, and creating healthy tools for processing emotions. For Dr. Sanda's dental audience, she highlights how reducing sugar intake can dramatically improve not just overall health but oral health as well. Want to see more of The Holistic Dentistry Show? In this episode Kate and Amanda had the pleasure of interviewing Paula Yolles, the creator of the Emotional Eating Sisterhood. Paula is trained in Empowerment Chakra Tapping, which is a combination of visualization, younger self-honouring (inner child work) and EFT Tapping. Paula helps women end emotional eating by creating an understanding that it's not only about the food! Being ready to do the inner self-growth is key to having food and body freedom. Paula shares that a big part of her own journey of ending emotional eating was doing the inner emotional self growth while making small steady changes to her eating. And this improved her overall health from gut health to emotional health. In this podcast episode, Karen invites Paula, the owner of Body Mind Food Freedom and founder of the End Emotional Eating with Ease Method, to discuss her personal experience of emotional eating and how she helps women overcome it. Paula shares her story of using food to soothe herself since childhood, which led to chronic health issues and dissatisfaction with her life as a mother and elementary school teacher. Her friend suggested she join a Healers Program, where she began her journey of self-discovery and growth. Through this program, she learned to break patterns of emotional eating by looking at her past experiences that were emotionally bogging her down. Later in the podcast, the speakers talk about how people are conditioned to associate food with reward and offer alternative ways to soothe oneself that do not involve food. They also emphasize the importance of learning how to lean into difficult emotions and speaking one's truth, especially for women who may struggle to express their feelings due to societal expectations. The podcast also delves into the scientific explanation behind the feeling of love in the heart, which is caused by the energy field around the heart that interacts with the energy fields of other people. The hosts discuss how people are becoming more open-minded about mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, and emphasize the importance of experiencing something before truly understanding it. They also discuss the impact of sugar on the body and how gradually reducing it over a period of six to eight months helped one of the hosts overcome negative mind chatter. In the final part of the podcast, the guest and host discuss the importance of discipline and awareness when it comes to self-care. Paula shares how she transitioned from focusing on gut health to helping women with their emotional well-being and emphasizes the need to prioritize one's own self-care. She recommends "The Third Door" by Alex Banayan and "Unexpected Recover" by Tom Monti as her favorite self-development and business books, respectively. We've spent the past few weeks talking about all of the things that you've tried to stop emotional eating, binge eating, and/or overeating, to stop feeling out-of-control with food, and/or to lose weight. And now that we've talked so much about what doesn't work, we're going to talk about what does. But before we get to that, let's talk about what I even mean when I say what "works." What's the goal here? In the past, your goal was probably to stop whatever eating behavior you didn't like, control your eating, and/or lose weight. And those goals make sense! We hear messages about how we need to do those things allllllll the time. But here's the deal: those goals are also a set-up for failure. Food doesn't need to be controlled (in fact, the more we try to control it, the more out-of-control it becomes), and neither does your body. No, the goals aren't control and shrinking yourself. They're peace and freedom. What would that look like? When you have peace and freedom with food and your body, you: Eat your favorite foods without losing control Know and connect with the parts of you that lead you to food Eat for comfort, stress-relief, etc. when you need to Have compassion for yourself when you struggle with food Trust what your body is telling you about what it needs Trust yourself to eat in ways that serve you well both physically and emotionally Treat your body with respect and kindness Doesn't that sound amazing? And it's really possible! How? With a combination of Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Intuitive Eating (IE). What are those and how do they work? That's exactly what we're talking about in this episode so take a listen!! To help get to know your eating parts, check out my FREE Eating Parts Cheat Sheets Want to stop dieting but don't know how? Julie Simon and I Discuss How to Manage Emotional Eating … Her book, When Food is Comfort: Nurture Yourself Mindfully, Rewire Your Brain and End Emotional Eating. The most common cause of emotional overeating is difficulty regulating our emotions, moods, thoughts, and behaviors When we disconnect from our emotions, we don't learn necessary skills to regulate Attunement and attachment in early childhood that create neural pathways When we're under the influence of emotional part of the brain, we're not capable of reasoning The 7 skills involved in inner nurturing The importance of exploring our emotions and bodily sensations Our tendency to move away from unpleasant emotions by focusing on our thoughts How emotions present in the body first (before we have words for them) Real recovery is experiencing and moving through emotions Learning to practice soothing behaviors to restore ourselves to calm The goal is not to distract ourselves, but to calm ourselves enough to work on regulation skills How self validation is not condoning the behavior, but acceptance and self compassion Julie Simon Links Julie's Website Facebook Twitter By purchasing products and/or services from our sponsors, you are helping to support The One You Feed and we greatly appreciate it. I'm taking a stand for self-care. Join me for the wellness series where I interview wellness experts, starting with Emotional Eating expert Paula Yolles. Learn why we eat when we're tired, how stress triggers us and how poor gut health affects anxiety and depression. Emotional eating has root causes in traumatic experience. Healing it cannot be based on diet and exercise alone. Retraining the brain allows the association of food with control to fade. Food is not a substitute for self care Eating the wrong foods creates a gut imbalance that not only creates digestive issues, but emotional ones. It's not about willpower or forcing yourself to do anything Be present and mindful when eating to calm and clear the mind as well as experience lasting satiation. Tricia Nelson is an emotional eating expert and the author of Heal Your Hunger: 7 Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating. I am delighted to have the opportunity to talk with her because emotional eating, while it might sound like a departure for me, is a common problem among us MTHFR folks. Anyone with MTHFR, COMT fast, or MAO-A fast can be more susceptible than average to emotional eating because emotional eating typically stems from low dopamine or low serotonin. Emotional eating falls within the realm of addictive behaviors and so it can be an MTHFR issue. The full interview is roughly 30 minutes and well worth a watch - check it out in the show notes here. To visit Tricia Nelson's website or schedule a consultation with her, please go to healyourhunger.com.
