Some artists knew exactly when it was the right time to check out. Others ended their recording careers with a big question mark or ellipsis, like there was unfinished work to be done. The latter is the topic of our discussion this week: Which artists or bands do we wish had stuck around longer and released more music? A little more than a decade ago, we probably would have included B-Movie on that list, as they were one of the major "what if?" bands of the '80s. After a run on the Dead Good and Some Bizarre labels in the early '80s that resulted in post-punk classics such as the era-defining "Nowhere Girl", "Remembrance Day" and "Marilyn Dreams", they released the fantastic synth-pop single "A Letter From Afar" (1984) and their sole full-length LP, Forever Running (1985), before calling it a day. That is, until they resumed their recording career in 2012, picking up and expanding upon their legacy with the full length albums The Age Of Illusion (2013) and Climate Of Fear (2016), as well as the EPs Distant Skies (2013), Repetition (2018), and two new tracks in 2022. It has been a most welcome return and artistic triumph for our heroes. So then, what an incredible thrill it is for us to welcome singer, songwriter, and bassist from B-Movie, Steve Hovington, as our Third Lad this week! Learn more about your ad choices. 2022.10.16 – 0654 – Dead Good Advice On Studio Corpsing Corpsing (that is, laughing uncontrollably) ‘There's one hazard that no amount of preparation can avoid: the collapse into inappropriate laughter. The Today programme website still treasures the moment when Charlotte Green kept a cool head while reading a news item about a Mr Twatt. And she would have sailed through it too, if it wasn't for the next story — about a plucky sperm whale'[1] The smallest reference to something odd may start you laughing, or it may just be because you're in ‘one of those moods'. Obviously, there's room for humour on air, and many listeners can forgive the occasional mistake. That's as long as it is not too often and they can understand what's happened. Otherwise, they'll be more bemused than amused and feel excluded. If you get a fit of the giggles, look away from their cause, think sad thoughts (“I could lose my job because of this”) and dig your fingernails into your arm to give your mind something else to concentrate on. It's often best not to try to contain the laughter, but instead go to another pre-recorded item (preferably a song) and literally laugh-off the moment. Have a good guffaw, walk into another room, have a drink of water and try to re-establish yourself in time for the next link. There are few threats greater to a newsreader's credibility than that of corpsing on air. It means to dry up, grind to a halt or, worse, burst out laughing. [1] Roland White, The Sunday Times, 30 October 2005. This Lententide, we have been learning to lament from the Psalms. Our final Psalm is possibly the most difficult to pray. It is arguably the darkest. It even stands among the most somber compositions in all of Holy Scripture, comparable to the overcast pages of Job and Ecclesiastes. It's hard to imagine how to reconcile such dark tones with evangelical hope. The Gospel must predominate in Christian preaching, even on this night as Christ lay dead in the tomb. Some might even think the sentiments of this psalm too dismal for it to serve as a Christian prayer at all. The hymnal committee saw no place for it in Lutheran worship and left it out. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/stjohnrandomlake/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/stjohnrandomlake/support

Tony Horne returns with episode three of The Dead Good Podcast, with a look back on the life of Meat Loaf, who has died at the age of 74. Meat Loaf was a larger-than-life character who had a rare ability to condense a range of different emotions into a single song. He was wild, he was unpredictable, and he pushed boundaries. Yet for all his on-stage antics, there was another side to him. In interviews he came across as good-humoured, self-deprecating and family-orientated, and he didn't like to hear himself referred to as a ‘legend'. As far as he was concerned, he was a man doing a job, just like a plumber or a brickie does his job. But Meat Loaf's music managed to transcend generations, and he was a consistent chart presence from the 1970s to the 1990s, with hits ranging from Bat Out of Hell to I Would Do Anything for Love. Tony argues that Meat Loaf was, perhaps, underrated, and that his music focussed on quality rather than quantity. Much of his success was down to the writing and production values of Jim Steinman, whose death last year greatly saddened Meat Loaf. His vocal range was extraordinary, and his music videos were superb. On stage, he had a gravitas and a presence few could match. The podcast is available on the Talk Podcasts website, iTunes, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, SoundCloud, Spotify and the iTunes app.

The Anoraks find themselves with an Alex-imbalance as Mr Tom Bonnett hides under his hood this time out. But never fear, some very special guests in the form of fellow station DJs the Sure Ditch Stars’ Talia and Becks step up to the plate in guessing whether Mr Burnard is a phoney in Real Fake. Elsewhere in a rammed show, the Alexes ponder the validity and worth of supergroups, celebrate the life of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti in our tastelessly-titled feature Dead Good and our Adventuring Anorak Cyril gets cantankerous on his next musical stop. We feature Eluvium in Piano Time and enjoy cuts from the Pixies, Louis Prima, Quantic Soul Orchestra and Beck. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Anoraks return with a show more packed than your auntie’s suitcase before a week in Marbella. The trio examine perceptions of a mainland European music in the UK, where next for Battles and why sailing a boat named Titanic Two might just be ill-advised. Great music from the likes of La Bionda, The Sonics, Benji Boko and Tinariwen accompanies Cyril’s next stop as he traverses America; the life of the late, great Pinetop Perkins is debated in a Dead Good that looks at Delta Bluesmen and the City Shanty Band are the latest in our series on bizarre collectives in the capital.
