Jenn shares some good advice that maybe you didn't think was good advice at the time, but now realize it is.
There's a meme that's been evolving since 2021, and in its current chaotic incarnation, it's become accidentally magical—even if the people using it don't realise it. In this episode, I'm unpacking "do it for the plot" as a practical framework for the year ahead. Not just as permission to take risks, but as a way of activating synchronicity and maintaining agency when things inevitably go sideways on the way to your goals. I'll walk you through how to use this alongside your existing magical toolkit—your amulets, your enchantments, your divination practice—and share the diagnostic story I keep coming back to for checking where I'm actually at versus where I think I am. I'm also introducing a new project I've been wrestling with: hospicing modernity's magic. Because the late twentieth century gave us some genuinely powerful techniques wrapped in a frame that insists magic isn't real. I want to find a way to respectfully retain the useful stuff and jettison the less-than-useful. There's practical advice here for interrogating your intentions for 2026, plus some thoughts on why the slacker-era re-enchantment is officially over and what needs to replace it. Happy new year, kids!
There are few things that are certain about 2026, but one of them is that at some point, you'll be called upon for advice. The crew dives into the madness of modern dating, unsolicited DMs, and the worst advice ever given, including a DUI story and a tragic CD collection incident. Things get wild as the conversation shifts to self-diagnosis trends, AI replacing doctors, and their favorite medical dramas from Scrubs to Charlie Sheen's meltdown era. From dog breed stereotypes to pet health myths, no topic is safe. This Q&A episode addresses listener questions following Monday's "Bad Advice vs Good Advice" episode. We dive into practical implementation strategies for moving away from willpower-based approaches to psychologically sound methods that work with human nature instead of against it.Important Points CoveredBuilding Systems vs. Relying on WillpowerCreating Flexible Boundaries Without Losing ControlPreparing for Obstacles vs. Negative ThinkingBuilding Momentum with Small ChangesDistinguishing Self-Trust from Making ExcusesMeasuring Progress DifferentlyMoving from bad advice to good advice requires changing not just what you do, but how you think about the entire process. You're not broken for struggling with willpower-based approaches - you're human. Start with one system-building approach and practice it consistently before adding more complexity.Key Takeaway"Progress isn't perfection - it's consciousness." The goal isn't to never struggle with food choices, but to make those choices from a place of awareness rather than unconscious reaction. Building systems that work with your psychology creates sustainable change that doesn't require superhuman willpower.

It's Sheen-tober down in What's New to Netflix town, as we look at two Charlie Sheen movies from different points in his career as well as discuss the new Netflix docuseries, aka Charlie Sheen. We go through a zillion new titles as well. Up first, it's the movie where Charlie Sheen impersonates his girlfriend to write inspiring advice and bang his boss in Good Advice from 2001. Next, Clint Eastwood stars in and directs The Rookie from 1990. Charlie Sheen plays a young cop who gets in over his head and kicks a lot of ass. And finally, it's the Netflix two-part miniseries, aka Charlie Sheen from 2025, where the man himself talks about his family, his life, and his many meltdowns. All of this plus more Mike Myers and less Michael Myers, dudes, Dr. Seuss, Posh Spice, yacht shock!, shows with lots of talking, zany schemes, twits, Seinfeld gets mentioned, and The Witcher season 4 speculations. got a suggestion for the show?: whatsnewtonetflix@gmail.com

Send us a textWelcome to the Damn Dude Podcast, hosted by California Cal!This is Season 5, Episode 4!We've got a very very very special guest in the house today! In the midst of all the chaos in this country and world, we need a breath of fresh air and some wholesomeness! So we brought on my kiddo, 8 year old Fordie!!Ford has such a kind and pure heart and message, everybody needs to let this one in.While the country either mourned or mocked Charlie Kirk's passing, we were at home having to coordinate to put the dog down, and that was very personal and deep to the family, but especially to Ford. Experiencing death is never fun, but an absolutely essential part of life.I think we all grew as a family and a movement in the sense that we believe its not right to mock the dead or speak negatively on anybody, especially anybody who isn't there to defend themselves. We get into what it's like in the world of an 8 year old growing up in San Diego, California, moving through life the way it is right now. If you are one of those who believe the world is doomed and there's no hope, then you NEED to listen to this one. This is our hope, this is our future, Goodness exists and is actively alive in many of our families and private conversations.Fordie tells us what its like to have to put the family dog down, what 3rd grade life is like, how he thinks humans should be living life, and a very powerful message from his 8 year old self, to his adult self! Luke 14:1, 7-11 - One Sabbath, when He [Jesus] went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching Him carefully. … Now He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,' and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Today on Karl and Crew, we discussed the importance of separating ourselves from bad influences. As followers of Christ, it’s crucial to surround ourselves with a community of fellow Christ-followers, as being surrounded by a worldly community can significantly influence our walk with Christ. We see this affirmed in 1 Kings 12, where we see how a young king, Rehboam, took the advice of bad influencers, and it led to destruction. We then turned to the phone lines to hear stories about good and bad influences from our listeners. Then we had Dr. Geoff and Cyd Holsclaws join us to talk about the intersection of faith, neuroscience, and spiritual formation. The Holsclaws are hosts of the podcast Attaching to God and wrote the book, “Landscapes of the Soul: How the Science and Spirituality of Attachment Can Move You into Confident Faith, Courage, and Connection.” Dr. Geoff has also authored several other books and is a visiting professor of theology at Western Theological Seminary. At the same time, Dr. Cyd is a Spiritual Director and a trauma-informed, Jesus-centered, professional certified coach with the International Coaching Federation. She is also a Certified NLP Master Practitioner and Master Coach. We also had Asheritah Ciuciu join us to talk about being sensitive to the presence of God in our lives and embracing it. Asheritah is a national speaker, bestselling author, and founder of One Thing Alone Ministries, an online ministry that helps overwhelmed women find joy in Jesus. She also has a YouTube Channel where she posts guided prayers, bible tips, and other resourceful videos. She has also authored several books, including “Delighting in Jesus-Rhythms to Restore Joy When You Feel Burdened, Broken, or Burned-Out.” You can hear the highlights of today's program on the Karl and Crew Showcast. Lead Pastor Josh Carstensen continues our Ecclesiastes series.Chapter 10 feels like Solomon's unloading all the wisdom he forgot to mention. They're short, sharp one-liners about life, risk, relationships, and work. But even the best advice has limits. Life under the sun can still fall apart, no matter how wisely we live. That's why the real hope isn't in flawless wisdom, but in the good news that God's love meets both the wise and the fool right where we are.Thank you for listening to this message from Northwest Hills Community Church in Corvallis, Oregon, on August 10, 2025, at 10:15am. Mike Matthews had an incredibly close relationship with his Grandma Eileen. So when one of his co-workers needed some support and a sounding board, he gave them her phone number and said, 'Give my grandma a call. Trust me.' And after this co-worker did call Grandma Eileen - and had a great experience - Mike came to the realization that he needed to share her with the world. That's how - and when - Grandma Stand first started. The concept is simple: A purple stand where a Grandma waits, take a seat, ask the jumping off question and the rest just flows naturally. This is a redefining of the phrase, 'generational wealth,' where both parties who participate in these conversations experience the riches of what each other has to offer. We've been focusing on community and what Mike and Grandma Stand are doing truly nails this. Who knows - maybe you have something you'll want to ask OR maybe you'll be the grandma with all (or some) of the answers. __________________ Steve is busy at work on the third book in his cozy mystery series, THE DOG WALKING DETECTIVES.
