emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Riz Ahmed, originally episode 16 from 2015-01-28.This episode is now over ten years old, at time of the Friday Rewind edition. So - NEEDLESS TO SAY though I'll say it anyway - that's a whole ten years of life and career. Whether that time has slipped past with the click of fingers or you've felt every single moment of it, this is a wonderful chance to view that snapshot back then. Riz's career and life are immensely inspirational whether you are involved in acting or music, or indeed if you've listened to this episode before. There is so much in this episode that still resonates (and will continue to), and so much that you can still glean from the wisdom of Riz. It's also amazing how you can listen and kind of verify everything that he had in mind back then against what later came into being, including an incredible lineup of film roles and production credits.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureINSTAGRAMALL LINKS HEREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. It's a classic achievement in Animation that is arguably more acclaimed than any other Pixar film. On the other hand: All the scenes with humans in them. In this episode of "Theater Cleaners," Todd and Dom dive into the critically acclaimed 2019 drama "Sound of Metal," directed by Darius Marder. The film tells the story of Ruben (played by Riz Ahmed), a heavy metal drummer who begins to experience sudden hearing loss. As Ruben struggles to come to terms with his new reality, he is forced to confront his past and reevaluate his priorities.Todd and Dom analyze the film's innovative use of sound design, as the audience experiences the world from Ruben's perspective, hearing what he hears as his hearing deteriorates. They discuss the film's themes of acceptance, recovery, and identity, and how they resonate with audiences. They also explore Ahmed's powerful performance, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and the supporting performances of Olivia Cooke as Ruben's girlfriend and Paul Raci as the leader of a deaf community. They examine the film's portrayal of deaf culture and the challenges faced by the deaf community.Join Todd and Dom as they reflect on the impact of "Sound of Metal" and explore how it challenges viewers to reconsider their own relationship with sound and the world around them.
"Sound of Metal" teaches us a lesson. Sometimes we gotta accept what we have and move forward, especially to live a fufilling life. Ruben in the film was like, "F that, I want my hearing back". You pay the price for the things you want and sometimes it doesn't turn out right. Ruben learned the hard way but in the end he did get peace and for the way the film was written to get the ending we see, it's great. I praise the film for its use of sound, the dedication the actors put on to make this film believable. It's hard to pretend to be deaf. The only thing I don't like is the end of the second act where Ruben is able to raise what he needs to go get by but hey, he put himself into a situation where he fails to acknowledge what he really has. Lou changes too, A separation needed to happen to really get a bigger perspective on themseves and life in general. It's funny how life works when you least expect it.#soundofmetal #morningreel

Make sure you're wearing hearing protection for this latest episode of TDBR, because we're talking about 2019's Sound of Metal, the 2019 slice of life drama directed by Darius Marder which follows a metal drummer coping with hearing loss. This film was a huge hit at the Academy Awards, managing to nab both Best Sound Design and Best Editing, plus a few nominations for acting. It stars Riz Ahmed, Paul Raci, and Olivia Cooke. Believe us when we say that this film comes across as a horror movie to musicians like ourselves - wear earplugs at concerts people! We briefly discuss how much emotional resonance can carry a film, the fear of losing something you take for granted, and why a Miller Lite brewery is required to fulfill the needs of Ohio alone. Thanks for listening guys! Our next couple of episodes will be on Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood', and the television series 'Better Call Saul'.
Editor - Mikkel E.G. Nielsen, ACE THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen, ACE makes his return to The Rough Cut, having previously appeared on the show to talk about the film that would land him an Oscar® for Best Film Editing, SOUND OF METAL (2020). In addition to the delicate challenge of filling the void left by the passing of editor Jon Gregory, director Martin McDonagh's frequent collaborator in the cutting room, Mikkel was also tasked with a crafting a film that walked a fine line between comedy and drama in a way that only an Irish film could. THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN takes place in 1923, on the small fictional Irish isle of Inisherin during the Irish Civil War. Folk musician Colm Doherty abruptly begins ignoring his long-time friend and drinking buddy Pádraic Súilleabháin. Pádraic, though nice and well liked by the islanders, is too dull for Colm who wishes to spend the remainder of his life composing music and doing things that he will be remembered for. Pádraic's life is destabilized by the loss of one of his few friends; as Pádraic grows increasingly distressed at the rejection, Colm becomes more resistant to his old friend's attempts to speak to him. Colm eventually gives Pádraic an ultimatum: every time he bothers him or tries to talk with him, he will cut off one of his own left fingers with a pair of sheep shears. It isn't just rare for an Amazon film to be released on DVD, it's virtually unheard of. So when the 2019 film Sound of Metal entered the catalog of the Criterion Collection and was slated for physical release, Jess knew we had to highlight it. Sound of Metal reflects the deterioration of hearing for a avant-garde metal drummer, which leads to the deterioration of both his job and his relationship with his bandmate/partner. While Ruben struggles to find a way in his newly deaf world, he meets roadblock after roadblock, from financial problems to difficulties accessing medical care and a struggle to even find a place to stay, especially after giving up his beloved RV to pay for Cochlear impants. We wanted to compare Sound of Metal with another recent film about characters with disabilities, Give Me Liberty. Also shot in 2019, Give Me Liberty follows a day of comic and manic errors in the life of a medical transport driver, whose position requires him to wrangle those with disabilities and, inadvertently, his extremely Russian family to get them to a funeral for his aunt. Give Me Liberty also puts up roadblock after roadblock, sometimes literally, as chaos ensues both inside and outside the transport van. Through their cinematography, editing and sound design, both films provide a white-knuckle ride through the worlds of their main characters while applying razor-sharp focus to the real societal issues that people with disabilities face in America. Both films also provide us with two amazing non-human characters: the vans. We're discussing both those topics, and far more, in this episode.

It's hard to argue with the fact that CODA is a heartwarming and inclusive film about a family of fishers. Sian Heder's cast of legitimately deaf actors (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur and Daniel Durant) gel well with the only hearing member of their family (Emelia Jones). As for Heder's story, it's a well-worn one about strife between people who truly love each other, despite the disputes. You also can't argue with the fact that the critics liked CODA. It's nice and it's safe. But that's the problem. When a movie wins the Oscar for Best Picture, it really should be a lot more remarkable than this is. It's not even the best picture in recent years about this subject. Sound Of Metal and the short documentary Audible are just plain better. So while you can't hate CODA, we failed to see why so many loved it as much as they did. Anyway, fire up our 447th Ellises' Analysis to hear us grade a nice movie on a steep curve, but order a batch of Sparkplug Coffee too. Mon B.O.
Sidey is famed for his sartorial elegance so it should come as no surprise that he picked the Top 5 Suits for us to discuss. By the end of this week's show, you'll know your two-piece from your three-piece, your tuxedo from your dinner jacket and your shell suit from your tracksuit. SOUND OF METAL is director Darius Marder's 2019 story about Ruben, a drummer in the experimental heavy metal band Blackgammon and the impact of his devastating and sudden hearing loss on his ongoing issues with sobriety. Riz Ahmed was Oscar nominated for his portrayal and it's a transformational and powerful performance but it's supporting actor Paul Raci, himself the son of Deaf parents, who steals the movie as Vietnam veteran and recovering alcoholic Joe, the charismatic leader of the community. A rallying call not to treat individuals with disabilities as broken, waiting to be fixed, we all enjoyed this moving journey alongside the fascinating insights into the Deaf community and culture it also provides. As a father to two girls I've been subjected to more than my fair share of unicorns over the years and feel strongly that this week's kids feature, the animated series REGULAR SHOW, has it right: The Unicorns Have Got To Go, which is coincidentally the title of the episode we watched. Mordecai and Rigby find their friendship tested when Mordecai is more interested in buying new cologne 'Dudetime' in order to attract waitress Margaret than spending time with Rigby playing the latest exciting video game, Strong Johns. But when Mordecai sprays himself with the aftershave the only thing attracted to him is a group of douchebag unicorn bros, out for a good time and definitely not trying to trick you into drinking a cup of their suspiciously spermy looking cocktails. Soon things get out of hand; Rigby's trampoline gets broken and park manager Benson, a sentient gumball machine, appears to be sexually assaulted. Will the boys rid themselves of the hangers on and patch up their failing friendship inside 12 minutes? We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. First things first, Raquel finally has a new house! Still, she had to run to the neighbors' for wifi like some kind of millennial or zoomer. But she pulls it off and we talk her pick for this week, SOUND OF METAL – a movie that's already in her top 25 films of all time. She recounts her decades of working with people with hearing impairments to laud the films portrayal of those with these types of issues. Both Raphael and Raquel love that the story isn't melodramatic or cliché. Raphael gets really defensive about people insulting metalheads. Raquel is enamored with the film's love story plot line. The two discuss how media and culture prefer to portray differently abled people as noble victims rather than the full, imperfect humans that they are just like everyone else. Raphael loves how sound itself seems to be a character in this film. Raquel gives Raphael's teenage Youth of Today shirt a shout out and they explain Rudimentary Peni and Einstruzende Neubauten to her. Things get equally heartfelt and goofy in this one. The Generation Splice is film podcast where retired psychologist Dr. Raquel Martinez, a Baby Boomer through & through, & her son Raphael Jose Martinez, a cranky millennial punk rocker/film writer, discuss various films through the lens of their generation & personal experiences. Every week one host picks a movie to dissect & see if they can splice together the generation gap via their love of film. Feel free to write to us! First, an incredibly gripping film about the frailty of the human condition. Followed by a movie with "heavy metal" in the title and about ten seconds of heavy metal in the film. "Sound Of Metal" is one of the best films of 2020 and we have a treat for you all today. We conducted three separate interviews talking with key people involved in the making of the film. First up is supervising sound editor Nicolas Becker, who takes us into one of the year's best soundscapes. Then we have writer/director Darius Marder who tells us about the screenplay, working with the deaf community and the actors of the film. And then we have someone who is part of both groups, actor Paul Raci who plays Ruben's mentor Joe in the film. All of them have a unique perspective to lend in these fascinating conversations. We hope you enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
