Gangland Wire
Little Vic and the Great Mafia War with Larry McShane

Gangland Wire

In this gripping episode of Gangland Wire, retired Intelligence Detective Gary Jenkins welcomes back veteran crime journalist and mob historian Larry McShane to discuss his latest book, Little Vic and the Great Mafia War. Together, they dive deep into the violent and chaotic period known as the Third Colombo War—a brutal internal conflict that nearly tore the Colombo crime family apart. Larry offers exclusive insights from his research, including rare interviews with Andrew Arena, one of the five sons of Victor "Little Vic" Orena, the acting boss at the center of the war. These firsthand accounts reveal the deeply personal toll the Mafia war inflicted on the Arena family and expose the raw emotions behind the headlines. Gary and Larry revisit the key flashpoints of the conflict, including the botched assassination attempt on Orena. On June 20, 1991, A five-man hit team waited in a car outside the Long Island home of Victor Orena, the acting crime boss of the Colombo crime family. Orena recognized the vehicle—and managed to escape with his lifethe bloody street warfare that followed. We explore the complex dynamics between longtime boss Carmine Persico, rising star John Gotti, and powerful enforcer Greg Scarpa—whose shadowy relationship with the FBI cast a dark cloud over the entire war. The conversation also tackles the shifting nature of mob alliances, how loyalty turned lethal, and how the RICO prosecutions of the early 1990s reshaped the Mafia's grip on New York. As the war's body count climbed, so too did its consequences—both for the Colombo family and the broader underworld. Don't miss this deep-dive into one of the most explosive chapters in Mafia history. And be sure to pick up Larry McShane's Little Vic and the Great Mafia War for an even more detailed look at the treachery, violence, and fallout of the Colombo civil war. You know, this is retired Detective Gary Jenkins from the Kansas City Police Intelligence Unit. And I have a man on the line right now, as you can see. Now, we couldn't get the video. I apologize for that. We couldn't get the video. So you got a picture. I mean, I'll have other pictures in there, but he's got a heck of a story. He's a mob author, a well-known mob author from New York. He was on the show before, and we talked about Vincent the Chin Gigante. He wrote Chin, The Life and Crimes of Mafia Boss Vincent Gigante. And Larry McShane also wrote Last Dawn Standing, The Secret Life of Mob Boss Ralph Natal. So welcome, Larry. I'm really happy to have you back on the show. Oh, I'm happy to come back. Thanks so much for asking. All right. So you have written this book. Really, it's about the Third Columbo War. Would you say that's what this book was about? Well, yeah, the third Columbo war is kind of the centerpiece of the whole thing. And then, you know, later in the book, we get on to some other things. [1:07] Legal things, what happened to the arenas and that sort of thing. But, yeah, it's it's a mob war book. What this is, is the title is Little Vic and the Great Mafia War. And, you know, these, these Columbo's, I tell you what, this, they coined, they must've coined the phrase going to the mattresses because the entire community. In 2010, the Association for Information Systems formed a special interest group () to nurture an international community of academics that study the role of digital technologies in fostering environmentally, economically and socially sustainable development. Fifteen years later, we sit down with , the current SIGGreen president, to reflect on the progress we have made. What do we know about how digital technologies help greening our planet? What efforts in empirical, theoretical, and design work is still needed? Is our role to understand the role of digital technologies or do we need to push and enact change ourselves? We conclude that environmental questions and problems are now firmly on the radar screen of our discipline but more work needs to be done for information systems academics to transform the way we think about and use digital technologies.  Episode reading list Corbett, J., & Mellouli, S. Folger Shakespeare Library: Shakespeare Unlimited

What were the top musical hits of Shakespeare's England? What lyrics were stuck in people's heads? What stories did they sing on repeat? The 100 Ballads project is a deep dive into the hits of early modern England—a kind of 17th-century Billboard Hot 100. Drawing from thousands of surviving printed ballads, researchers Angela McShane and Christopher Marsh have ranked the most popular songs of the period. These broadsides—cheaply printed sheets sold for a penny—offer surprising insight into the period's interests, humor, and even news headlines. McShane and Marsh discuss what these ballads tell us about moral norms, sensationalism, and everyday life. Some are instructive, some are bawdy, and some are unexpectedly feminist. This episode brings to life the soundscape of Shakespeare's world with clips from newly recorded versions of the most popular ballads and a look at how the team developed their ranking system. >> Explore the project and hear the songs yourself at www.100ballads.org Christopher Marsh is Professor of Cultural History at Queen's University, Belfast. He has published extensively on various aspects of society and culture in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. His most relevant book in relation to the 100 Ballads project is Music and society in early modern England (Cambridge, 2010). This is an overview of music-making in the 16th and 17th centuries, and it includes chapters on musicians, dancing, bell-ringing, psalm-singing and, of course, ballads. Angela McShane is an Honorary Reader in History at the University of Warwick. She is a social and cultural historian, researching the political world of the broadside ballad and the political and material histories of intoxicants and the everyday. She has published widely on political balladry, including numerous book chapters, and journal articles in Past and Present, Renaissance Studies, Journal of British Studies, Journal of Early Modern History, Popular Music Journal and Media History. She is also the author of a reference work, Political Broadside Ballads in Seventeenth Century England: A Critical Bibliography (2011). A monograph on the broadside ballad trade and its politics in seventeenth-century Britain is forthcoming with Boydell and Brewer. She is also a Co-Investigator for a related website and book project: “Our Subversive Voice: The history and politics of protest music 1600-2020.” From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Our guest, Sue McShane, is a valued member of The Aging Project Community whose personal journey shows the power of self-advocacy, self-awareness, and taking small, consistent steps toward better health. At 60, Sue is feeling stronger, healthier, and more empowered than ever, but it wasn't always that way. After years of struggling with mental health, trauma, and chronic health concerns, she discovered genetic testing, glucose monitoring, and strength training, which have helped her optimise her health and transition off antidepressants after 27 years. Sue shares how understanding her DNA has been the missing piece in her health puzzle, proving that health isn't just about how you feel—it's about knowing what's happening beneath the surface. Key Episode Highlights 1️⃣ Health is a life-long journey and there's always more to learn Sue thought she knew everything she needed about health—until she discovered The Aging Project Podcast and started learning about genetic testing and personalised health. Health is never “done.” It's a lifelong process of learning, adapting, and making informed choices. Symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, weight gain, cholesterol and anxiety were the calling cards that moved her into action. 2️⃣ From Trauma to Transformation Childhood trauma & long-term stress – Sue grew up in a violent home, which she believes triggered long-term health issues. Spent 27 years on antidepressants after being told by a GP that “everyone needs them.” Battled postnatal depression and chronic infections, leading to years of antibiotic use. Menopause became another turning point—when she sought medical help, she was offered more antidepressants and a statin. That's when she decided to take control of her health. 3️⃣ The Tools That Changed Everything Sue took inspiration from The Aging Project and began exploring: ✔ Fitgenes testing – Helped her understand her genetic predispositions and vitamin needs. ✔ Glucose monitoring (Vively) – Showed how her body responded to different foods. ✔ Strength training – Lifting heavy weights helped her build muscle and improve metabolism. ✔ Nutritional focus – Adjusting B12 and B6 levels played a key role in her transition off antidepressants. 4️⃣ What We Need to Know About Our Health Many GPs aren't trained in menopause, genetics or nutrition Genetic testing is no longer just for celebrities—it's an accessible, powerful tool for understanding your unique health risks. Health is like a jigsaw puzzle—you don't get the full picture all at once, but every piece helps. Your DNA is the missing piece—without it, you're guessing about what your body really needs. Key Takeaway Sue's story is proof that it's never too late to take charge of your health. Healing isn't a one-time fix—it's an ongoing journey, and small, intentional steps make all the difference. Understanding your DNA is a game-changer. It gives you the power to personalise your health, prevent disease, and make smarter choices for longevity. Want to Learn More?

It's our 200th episode and after four years of news, Fitz and McShane look back over why the show was started and why we continue on. It was born from Covid and it evolved to seeing narratives for what they are. We look at the news stories that stood out to us and what we're looking foward to in the future. Daily news we talked about the whacky Democrat protests and their true desire to censor anyone they disagree with. JD Vance is in Munich showing some very tough love to the EU. Trumps Mugshot is hanging in the oval office. DOGE is still going strong as Washington D.C sees a spike in homes going up for sale and the googling of lawyers, how to erase your hard drive, and how to get an overseas bank acount! AND of course, Jefe hits us with a presidential pet farm report.  Come on in and celebrate!  Download and listen on @SpeakerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/whiskey-hell-podcast--5683729/support.
