Winter Study at Isle Royale National Park has a decades long history, but just a few scientists ever get the chance to spend time on this isolated archipelago in Lake Superior. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with one of those fortunate ones, Johnathan Pauli, Professor in the Department of Forest & Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin Madison. From tracking foxes and martens to unraveling a centuries-old survival story, Johnathan shares how studying this wilderness in winter reveals secrets a summer visitor would never experience. Join us for a conversation about science, survival, and what makes Isle Royale National Park a critical refuge for wildlife.Key Takeaways:Winter Study at Isle Royale has been going on for over 60 years, originally launched to monitor moose and wolf populations and now expanded to include other animals such as martens, foxes, and snowshoe hares.Winter presents extreme challenges and rich insights, including long days in deep snow, cold exposure, and tracking animals over miles of off-trail terrain.Snowshoe hares follow a 10-year boom-and-bust cycle, which helped explain the survival story of Angelique Mott in 1845, when she struggled to trap hares during a population crash.Isle Royale functions as a modern-day “refugium,” because it is more buffered from human development and invasive species, making it an ideal site for long-term conservation and research.Notable Quotes:“Winter is a period of nutritional and resource deficits.  It's a really important time to study these winter-adapted organisms.”“I love to say that there's no anonymity in winter.”“Refugia is something near and dear to my heart. These islands, Isle Royale and the Apostle Islands, really represent these interesting test beds for the concept of refugia.”“It's really important work. It's really hard work. But it's also really exciting. There's a lot of complexity of emotions you have while you're skiing these trails.”“Sometimes what you see in the tracks can be almost as exciting as seeing some of these critters in person.”Resources:Jonathan Pauli's Research Group – Learn more about his work at UW–Madison:https://pauli.russell.wisc.edu/Isle Royale National Park – Explore the park and its natural history: https://www.nps.gov/isro/index.htmApostle Islands National Lakeshore – Discover another key research site: https://www.nps.gov/apis/index.htmConnect With Us:Website: https://nplsf.org/podcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/NationalParksOfLakeSuperiorFoundationLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/national-parks-of-lake-superior-foundationSponsors:Cafe Imports – Supporting environmental sustainability in coffee-growing regions since 1993.  Learn more at https://cafeimports.com.National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation – Support vital projects by donating at: https://nplsf.org/donateBe sure to tune in to this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast to hear Jonathan Pauli's firsthand stories of survival, science, and what Isle Royale reveals in the silence of winter.

I will continue to bring the principles of the Blue Mind Movement to fruition through my work with this show, and as I explore the possibility of earning my PhD in Sustainability Education. --The concept of Blue Mind has been around since the beginning of recorded human history. At present, Marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols advocates for this very concept, spreading the positive impact of water on our lives. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, he talks about his book “Blue Mind” and how being in, on, or under water delivers profound transformation deep within yourself. He discusses how spending as little as 23 minutes around water – or just the feeling of it – could elevate your health and bring happiness to your state of mind. He also shares how he uses a small blue marble to spread awareness about his advocacy, educating everyone regarding their important role in saving our beloved water planet.About Guest:Dr. Wallace J. Nichols (J) has been called a water warrior, one who commits to helping others access their “blue mind state.” His visionary ideas related to ocean and aquatic ecosystems, migratory species, marine protected areas, fisheries management and plastic pollution inspire others to find a deeper connection with nature and embrace inventive approaches to issues ranging from protection of ocean life to global water supply to the mental health benefits of a life spent on or near the water. Formerly a senior scientist at Ocean Conservancy, J holds a M.E.M. degree in Natural Resource Economics and Policy from Duke University and a Ph.D. degree in Wildlife Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona. He received a Bradley Fellowship to study the impacts of sea level rise at Duke University Marine Lab, a Marshall Fellowship to study at the University of Arizona, and a Fulbright Fellowship to study at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico marine station in Mazatlán. In 2011 he was inducted as a Fellow National member of the Explorers Club. In 2014 he received the University of Arizona's Global Achievement Award. J has authored more than 200 publications, lectured in more than 30 countries and nearly all 50 states, and appeared in hundreds of media outlets including NPR, BBC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, National Geographic, Animal Planet, Time, Newsweek, GQ, Outside Magazine, USA Today, Elle, Vogue, Fast Company, Surfer magazine, Scientific American, and New Scientist. His book Blue Mind, published in summer 2014 by Little, Brown & Company, quickly became a national bestseller. It has been translated into numerous languages, most recently Mandarin, and inspired a wave of media and practical application.Guest LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wallacejnicholsGuest Website: http://www.wallacejnichols.orgGuest Social:https://www.facebook.com/wallacejnicholshttps://www.instagram.com/wallacejnicholshttp://www.patreon.com/bluemindLove the show? Hosts Matthew Butler, Grant Harris, and Randy Stewart set the stage for Wildlife by the Numbers emphasizing the importance of proper scientific approaches in wildlife ecology and sharing anecdotes to create awareness about the challenges and rewards of ecological research.Episode quotes:"Today, we're gonna talk about an issue that we often confront with biologists, particularly young biologists that are just getting into wildlife work and understanding statistics and science well, conservation science design of of studies, and that is random sampling and the importance of random sampling and why it matters. To help introduce this topic, we'll start with, a simple example, and then we'll get into more wildlife oriented issues. So for the simple example, I have a big garden, and it's large. It's it's an acre in size.""Okay. So now that we know we need to to sample, so to not count everything but parts of it, and we want those parts to be representative, how do we then get that representative sample? What do what procedure do we have to use to make sure that sample represents the population at large?""And so that's why we were talking about we wanna make sure that when we sample, we are doing it in a random way to account for the differences in number of tomatoes on each plant to make sure we have an accurate representation of the true count in that garden."Episode music: Shapeshifter by Mr Smith is licensed under a Attribution 4.0 International License. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ https://freemusicarchive.org/music/mr-smith/studio-city/shapeshifter/

E.O. Wilson once said, “if insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos”- and he wasn't wrong. In fact, our entire food system depends on the energy that tiny bugs transfer to vertebrates. So, what's the issue? Insects themselves depend on native plants and larger portions of our outdoor spaces have been overtaken by non-native, invasive species and resource-intensive, environmentally futile lawns. It sounds dire, but there are plenty of solutions according to today's guest Douglas Tallamy, the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. Dr. Tallamy has dedicated much of his career to raising awareness about the significance of native plants and outlining the simple, common-sense solutions that everyone can use to improve biodiversity in their own backyard. In this conversation, we chat with Doug about the promise of keystone species, the amazing progress he's made reintroducing native plants on his own Pennsylvania property, and the nonprofit he founded to encourage private landowners to join the movement.Show NotesAbout Douglas TallamyHomegrown National ParkHomegrown National Park: Native Plant Resource DirectoryBringing Nature Home by Douglas W. The concept of Blue Mind has been around since the beginning of recorded human history. At present, Marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols advocate for this very concept, spreading the positive impact of water on our lives. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, he talks about his book “Blue Mind” and how being in, on, or under water delivers profound transformation deep within yourself. He discusses how spending as short as 23 minutes around water – or just the feeling of it – could elevate your health and bring happiness to your state of mind. Dr. Wallace also shares how he uses a small piece of blue marble to spread awareness about his advocacy, educating everyone regarding their important role in saving our beloved water planet. About Guest:Dr. She is intelligent, kind, humble, empathetic, skilled and incredibly talented at everything she does. She made an impact on every single ambassador and leader she came into contact with and her leadership will be greatly missed. Ashley is now advancing onto the next stage of her incredible career in wildlife conseration.  Ashley lives in east Tennessee with her husband and two dogs. She spends time outdoors as a hunter, angler, and horseback rider. Ashley was raised on a farm in Minnesota and earned a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin. After graduation, she traveled around the country working as a wildlife technician on numerous research projects. In 2013 she boarded a plane for Ghana, West Africa, where she spent two years serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a rural village. Ashley fell in love with a scraggly little puppy during her time in Ghana and managed to bring him all the way back home with her. Upon her return to the United States, she began a master's program at Mississippi State University to determine how hunting pressure influences deer movements. While there, she met her husband and they acquired an English Springer Spaniel that is the most versatile (and crazy!) hunting dog you'll ever meet. Ashley's role as the South East Regional Coordinator was to extend the work of Artemis to southern states by supporting sportswomen as conservation leaders and helping them to build community. She did this... and so much more.  Show Notes: 1:22 – What's in Ashley's freezer? 7:01 – Special message from an Artemis ambassador based in Alaska! 7:42 – Ashley takes about her background as an equestrian enthusiast. 14:27 – Special message from an Artemis ambassador based in Tennessee! 16:02 – Ashley talks about growing up on a farm and her relationship to food. 41:20 – Special message from an Artemis ambassador based in Georgia! 24:28 -- Special message from an Artemis ambassador based in TN!
