UKRAINE, WISCONSIN, BURNING THE REICHSTAG & THE REALITIES OF GRASSROOTS / WEB ORGANIZING We start GREEP Zoom #218 with our laureate MIMI GERMAN & her fabulous poetry. With TATANKA BRICCA we then celebrate the birthday of the great CESAR CHAVEZ & The United Farmworkers Union. The Green Party's HOWIE HAWKINS & Ukrainian engineer DENYS BONDAR relate the realities of Putin's “hybrid nuclear war” that combines the horrors of atomic weapons and power plants. Denys reminds us of the Budapest Memorandum in which Ukraine thought it had traded the warheads it inherited from the former Soviet Union in exchange for peace & security. Howie tells us of the brave Ukrainians staying behind the maintain the Ukrainian reactors to keep them from causing another Chernobyl-sized disaster despite being tortured by the Russians. We also hear that Putin has destroyed 70% of Ukraine's wind power while Vampirizing the juice from Crimea's solar panels. The question of whether mass rallies can become more than photo ops through the use of QR codes is discussed by organizer GINI LESTER & computer guru LEE FELSENSTEIN. Howie then wonders if organizers at April 5 rallies throughout the country. Ohio's SANDY BOLZENIUS lauds the decentralized nature of these pro-democracy rallies nationwide. Solar homeowner PAUL NEWMAN of Healthcare For Us describes using cell phone hotspots to link into rallies. We hear further MURTZA MURTI about using a MailChimp page to further working groups for democratic progress. A call for a working group comes from Lee Felsenstein. Howie refers us to the book subtitled THE MASS PROTEST DECADE & THE MISSING REVOLUTION. Re-localization is advocated for us by MIKE HERSH. The history of the farmworkers is revisited by Tatanka. Recalling her radio interview with Dolores Huerta is LYNN FEINERMAN. We finish with Tatanka conjuring up Communities of Resistance to carry us through the coming Reichstag Fire & fascist putsch, where we will begin again next week.

Three years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, roughly 20% of the Ukrainian territory remains occupied by Russian troops. Before the invasion, there were 41 million people living in Ukraine; today, the UN Refugee Agency estimates that 3.7 million people still in Ukraine have been displaced from their homes, while almost 7 million refugees had to flee abroad. The war has severely damaged the Ukrainian economy and the living conditions for people in Ukraine.Like everywhere else in the world, there is a class divide in Ukraine, and the impact of the war has not been equally felt: while the average Ukrainian was forced to migrate, lose wages, and fight on the front, the wealthy were able to escape conscription and put their money abroad. While economic elites reportedly took $35 billion out of the country since the start of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnky not only refused to expropriate and nationalize their assets but, instead, chose to impose harsh anti-labor measures on workers and unions and make further cuts to social services using the national emergency laws. The fight to ensure Ukrainian people's right to self-determination is not just about removing all Russian troops from Ukrainian territory and allowing the Ukrainian people to decide their own fate without fears of coups and invasions. It also has to do with stopping and reversing the encroachment of Western corporate and US imperial interests that seek to further exploit the country. However, prospects for this are growing darker by the day as President Donald Trump's new administration engages in bilateral negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and without Zelensky, to end the war, all while suggesting that the US take ownership of 50% of Ukraine's rare earth minerals. Solidarity with working people in Ukraine and their fight against Russia's invasion never meant support for the Zelensky government, the US government, NATO, or the designs of rival imperial powers, but lack of international solidarity has left Ukrainians in an impossible situation.   This is Solidarity without Exception, a new podcast series brought to you by The Real News Network, in partnership with the Ukraine Solidarity Network, hosted by Blanca Missé and Ashley Smith. In Episode One of this series, released on the three-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we analyze the current state of the war and the last three years from an internationalist, working-class perspective. Cohost Blanca Missé speaks with Denys Bondar, a native of Ukraine, professor of Physics at Tulane University, and one of the coordinators of the Ukraine Solidarity Network in the US; and Hanna Perekhoda, a researcher at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, a founder of the Switzerland-based Committee of Solidarity with the Ukrainian People and Russian Opponents of the War, and an ethnic Ukrainian who grew up in the Russian-speaking the city of Donetsk in the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterFollow us on BlueskyLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcastPre-Production: Maximillian Alvarez, Blanca Missé, Kayla Rivara, Ashley SmithStudio Production: David HebdenAudio Post-Production: Alina NehlichMusic Credits: Venticinque Aprile (“Bella Ciao” Orchestral Cover) by Savfk |https://www.youtube.com/savfkmusicMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

The MMA Vivisection Shows: 'Main Card Preview' & 'Prelims Card Preview'

UFC Mexico City is a solid card overall, even if the prelims are a hodgepodge of who's-whos hoping to separate themselves from the pack. The opening fight aka the curtain-jerker, would be more fitting in the featured prelim spot as Naimov is looking like a real deal prospect with a fairly high ceiling. Alas, we get Cristian Quiñonez vs. Raoni Barcelos, which is fine, I guess, but Barcelos has been looking pretty shopworn lately, so we're giving this one a partial side eye.Bloody Elbow is fighting for the sport, the fighters and the fans. If you share our mission, please consider becoming a paid subscriber today. There are a couple themes going on with this event. First, it is a night of rematches. Both the main and co-main events are rematches. Buried inside those rematches are others dotting the resumes of all four men featuring in the top two bouts. This card has three rematches on it, which seems like a lot. I'm making a mental note to go back and find out what the record is for rematches on a single UFC card. I'm willing to bet that this event is pretty far up the list.Edgar Cháirez vs. Daniel Lacerda is the third contest featured in that aforementioned trio of rematches. Their first bout ended in a no contest after the referee in their bout jumped the gun and stopped the fight prematurely. This was back in September. The two were scheduled to run it back in October, but Lacerda pulled out prior to the card citing a medical issue. They will finally get their opportunity at a full fight tomorrow. There is one more contest on this undercard that looks interesting, though. Claudio Puelles vs. Fares Ziam Pits the well rounded skillset of Ziam against the explosive grappling of Puelles. Claudio was made to look like a one-trick pony against Dan Hooker, but perhaps he took some lessons from that one. Either way, that one definitely has our attention. Let's take a look at the undercard as well as some fun factoids.UFC Mexico City Prelims* Cristian Quiñonez  vs.  Raoni Barcelos 135 lbs* Jesus Aguilar  vs.  Mateus Mendonça 125 lbs* Edgar Cháirez  vs.  Daniel Lacerda 125 lbs* Claudio Puelles  vs.  Fares Ziam 155 lbs* Luis Rodríguez  vs.  Denys Bondar 125 lbs* Victor Altamirano  vs.  Felipe dos Santos 125 lbs* Muhammad Naimov  vs.  Erik Silva 145 lbsUFC Mexico City Fun Factoids* Ranked fights: 2* Ranked fighters: 4* Fighters coming off a loss: 15* Contender Series alumni: 12* TUF alumni: 3* Debuting fighters: 1* Combate alumni: 6Don't forget to check out the bonus section for a great review of the UFC 298 preliminary card. Zane Simon & Connor Ruebusch are here with the MMA Vivisection PRELIMS SHOW, breaking down a set of 6 bouts on this 13-bout UFC Vegas 47: 'HERMANSSON VS STRICKLAND' Fight Night event. "The UFC hasn't exactly been starting 2022 out on a hot streak. Coming off some time off and a less than enticing PPV offering, the promotion has returned from another short break with a Fight Night card that's unlikely to whet many appetites. Sean Strickland takes on Jack Hermansson in a quality middleweight main event. After that? it's prelims all the way down." - Zane Simon For those fans who wish to dive deeper into the PRELIMS CARD, check out that version of the MMA Vivi which already aired at 1pm Central today, Thurs., Feb. 3rd., 2022, right here on our SC channel. Turn lead into gold? Yes, it's possible. But according to Denys Bondar, PhD, that's beside the point. He's asking this question: can any substance be made to look like any other one? Press play to explore the meaning and implications of this and more: How much computing power you can get from shining ‘bright' light on a single atom How it's possible to make one element look like another, and why it matters Whether it's possible for a computer to process information at the speed of light Bondar is an assistant professor at the Tulane University School of Science & Engineering whose most recent work has been on nonlinear optics. It's a field of study that describes the behavior of bright light (high-intensity light, like that given off by lasers) in nonlinear substances. He contrasts an explanation of this with an explanation of linear optics, which is observed when everyday light—like that from the lightbulbs in your house—interacts with materials and reflects back to the eye. Using analogies and metaphors, Bondar discusses these concepts in depth. He also dives into the history of optics, and provides three concrete ways in which nonlinear optics can be applied in the lab and commercially. These include the possibility of computation at the speed of light, and the induction of superconductivity into certain materials. Tune in for the full conversation and check out https://sse.tulane.edu/pep/faculty/bondar to learn more about his work. Episode also available on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/30PvU9C
