Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
Larry Ostola speaks with Patrice Dutil about his book, Ballots and Brawls: The 1867 Canadian General Election. Ballots and Brawls by Patrice Dutil explores Canada's first federal election in 1867, shortly after Confederation. The book vividly recounts the idealistic foundations laid in the 1864 Charlottetown and Quebec City conferences and delves into the chaotic and often violent summer election across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec. Dutil highlights the key political and social tensions of the time—economic issues, taxation, defence, and cultural divides—while profiling major figures like John A. Macdonald and George-Étienne Cartier. Drawing on archival sources and poll data, the book provides a compelling, detailed look at the birth of Canadian democracy. Patrice Dutil is a professor of politics and public administration at Toronto Metropolitan University and a senior fellow of the Bill Graham Centre for Contemporary International History at the University of Toronto. He is the founder of the Literary Review of Canada and was president of the Champlain Society from 2011 to 2017. He is the author and editor of several books on Canadian politics and governance, including Statesmen, Strategists and Diplomats: Canada's Prime Ministers and the Making of Foreign Policy and The Unexpected Louis St-Laurent: Politics and Policies for a Modern Canada. John Belushi may have been one of the funniest comedians of his generation, but he wasn't just a funny guy. He was a rock star. He partied with the Stones, fronted a world-class band of R&B legends, and was responsible for a punk rock riot in Rockefeller Center. He drew the ire of street gangs in Chicago, attempted to steal a boat with his blues brother, and performed one of his final episodes of Saturday Night Live on death's door. Everything was heightened. The stakes. The laughs. The sensory overload of lights, camera, action. He worked hard, and played harder. And when it all came to a crashing halt in a Hollywood bungalow, one question remained: Was John Belushi's death the result of foul play? Send us a textWelcome to 2025! Ken and Mike kick off the new year with their security resolutions (or lack thereof) before diving into the bittersweet farewell to ShmooCon, one of the most beloved hacker conferences. Ken shares his experiences from the final event, including insights on hardware hacking, radio security, and the unique hacker culture that made ShmooCon special. They also unpack one of the most practical talks from the conference: a deep dive into open source security tools versus enterprise solutions, highlighting ways security teams can cut costs without sacrificing effectiveness. Speaking of open source, the hosts discuss the controversy surrounding Semgrep's licensing changes and the rise of OpenGrep, the latest community-driven fork in response to closed-source shifts—drawing parallels to the Terraform/OpenTofu saga. Finally, the duo explores cyber risk from an insurance perspective, breaking down how breaches translate into real-world financial costs (hint: mailing breach notifications alone could bankrupt you). Whether you're a security pro, an open source advocate, or just here for the ShmooBall nostalgia, this episode has something for you!

Gotta catch 'em all -- even if it means taking out another dude at a Costco. Fights over Pokémon cards at Costco have escalated to the point of people pulling items from fallen shoppers on the ground, driven by supply and demand issues and willingness to pay double the MSRP. Retailers' practice of putting Pokémon card stock out the back door enables scalpers and resellers to buy them up, causing shortages and frustration among genuine collectors. The 151 card set is causing unprecedented chaos, with people willing to pay double the MSRP despite not including the most expensive cards. Past Pokémon card reprints led to devaluation as they were indistinguishable from originals, making it difficult to identify first edition cards. Costco and other retailers should include warning notes with Pokémon card shipments about potential violence and chaos during sales, particularly for the 151 card set. Retailers should limit Pokémon card stock to the back room or customer service areas to prevent fights and ensure fair distribution. Chaos and violence erupted at Costco over the highly sought-after Pokémon '151 Mini Tin' cards, reflecting the intense demand and competitive nature of collectible items. 00:00 Fistfights erupted at Costco over Pokémon cards due to high demand and lack of purchase limits, reminiscent of similar chaos during the pandemic. 01:25 Fights broke out at Costco over Pokémon '151 Mini Tin' cards, echoing past promotional chaos and raising concerns for future events. 03:23 Chaos erupts at Costco over Pokémon '151 Mini Tin' cards as buyers pay inflated prices, blaming retailers and each other amid concerns about devalued originals. 05:15 Limited Pokémon '151 Mini Tin' cards spark chaos in stores as parents prioritize resale over kids' enjoyment. 06:45 Pokémon card demand at stores like Costco has led to fights among collectors, prompting calls for better precautions. 07:54 A woman at Walmart sparked conflict over her cart during Black Friday, while Costco's Pokémon card deals have lost value. 09:11 Chaos erupts at Costco as shoppers violently fight over Pokémon '151 Mini Tin' cards, highlighting the escalating frenzy around collectible items. 10:25 Pokémon fans express disappointment over the lack of care from Nintendo, hinting at upcoming Power World cards.

FULL EP HERE: https://www.patreon.com/slopquest The boys toy with the idea of telemarketing their own podcast. This leads to O'Neill remembering starting a grease fire when he was kid because he was on the phone with a telemarketer. Then Aaron recounts a telemarketing nightmare call. Then Andrew parties with a 60 year old professor and O'Neill does not think this guy ruled even though Andy did. Then Andy learns harpsichord. Then Andy talks real life hobbits as O'Neill tries to remember hobbit names and can't. O'Neill doesn't care about scientific discoveries and this infuriates Andy. Then O'Neill and Andy get into an epic argument about “what's better than the Opera”. Then O'Neill tells a classic story about a chain link fence. Then the boys come up with catch phrase for increasing the birth rate.
The World Series-winning 1986 New York Mets were, in a word: assholes. But their fans loved them anyway. The Mets were brash, scandalous, addicted, violent, and when you got right down to it, a perfect reflection of their hometown of Queens, New York, and the perfect opposite of Manhattan and the hated New York Yankees who played there. The ‘86 Mets made headlines with their drug use, their on and off-field brawls, their nights in jail, their destruction, and, of course, their domination of the National League. They also made Mets fans and Queens residents focus on something other than the true crime case in the papers that summer, a case that threatened to sink Queens' reputation with a scandal involving corruption and the mysterious death of a beloved Queens politician outside Shea Stadium.
