On the latest Soft Power Radio, as part of our Black History Month special series honoring the local community, we are in conversation once again with Donald Griffin and RoMar Tolliver, co-founders of Black Wall Street. Food pantry, resource hub, youth counseling initiative, tutoring center, at-risk and low-income outreach program - Black Wall Street has, in less than two years, become a vital community asset. Donald and RoMar built all of their innovative, grassroots programming from scratch, starting with nothing but a vision and a seemingly endless supply of dedication to their work. We talk about why their particular approach is so necessary and so effective, what projects they have been developing since they moved to their new location at 1301 Cordone Ave a few months ago, and what the bright future holds for Black Wall Street and for the communities it so tirelessly serves.

Black Wall Street Reno is a nonprofit organization spearheaded by its two founders Donald Griffin and Romar Tolliver, going stronger and stronger in its second year of existence. Both men hope that their organization can be one that steers local teens away from the adversity that they faced as youths and young men. “This organization is to provide preventative measures for teens,” Tolliver said during a recent interview with Our Town Reno. For him, Black Wall Street Reno is a way for youths to channel their energy into productive learning and enrichment activities instead of being out on the streets. “I got in trouble as a kid,” Tolliver said, referring to the time he spent in the Nevada Youth Training Center (NYTC) when he was younger. His experience at NYTC was an eye opening one, and it's marked in his memory as eight months of his youth that could have been spent doing something better. Black Wall Street was the name of a thriving black-owned business district and surrounding residential area in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1921, just over 100 years ago, it was destroyed in a racial massacre that left many residents and business owners dead or injured, and their businesses burned to the ground. It is among the worst cases of racial violence ever recorded in the United States. This week on the podcast, we welcome Donald Griffin and RoMar Tolliver. Together, they have founded Black Wall Street Reno, a nonprofit named after the original Tulsa district and guided by a mission to build up the black community in the Reno/Sparks area. Conor, Don, and RoMar talk in this episode about the origins of Black Wall Street Reno, services they provide to the community, developing their organization based on local needs, the different approaches and effectiveness of political and direct aid organizations, sobriety and recovery from addiction, the challenges of raising funds and recruiting volunteers as a new nonprofit, Reno's racial history, spoken word poetry, creating generational wealth for black communities, teaching accurate history in schools, and a whole lot more. Ep55 Jan van Hooff on the work of Dijkgraaf, Griffin, Darwin, Niko Tinbergen and Desmond Morris, and how it inspired him to work on primate behaviour

Jan van Hooff briefly recapped what was previously discussed in episode 44 of iBuzz, saying how he grew up in Burger's Zoo and studied biology at the University of Biology. Jan discusses how he initially got his biology kick from working in the institute of Sven Dijkgraaf, who is famous for his input towards the discovery of echolocation in bats during World War II. Jan states that Dijkgraaf himself was inspired by Lazzaro Spallanzani. He observed that bats could still navigate when blinded, but not when their ears are plugged. Building on this Dijkgraaf noted that bats could distinguish different shapes using different calls. Jan also noted that Donald Griffin simultaneously discovered echolocation in bats and dolphins. His work triggered an interest from the Navy, which allowed the development of sonar in submarines. Jan noted that Dijkgraaf and his team also discovered the use of electroreception in sharks, enabling them to find prey in the sand. This work triggered many physiological discussions, namely the distinction between mind and matter and the dualism between mind and body. Jan stated this debate fascinated him, saying “this work on the sensory mechanism of animals of which we have come from a subjective picture, fascinates me really. This piqued my interest in animal behaviour”. Jan then went on to say that the writings of Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen (the fathers of Ethology; the study of animal behaviour) further inspired him to study animal behaviour. Especially the concept that behaviour is a function of the brain and is, therefore, a measurable concept. Further reading on Charles Darwin book ‘The expression of the emotions in man' where Darwin wrote about primate expressions, which can be used to inform others of their intentions and feelings. Jan wanted to know more, so approached Niko Tinbergen in the 1960s, who referred him to Desmond Morris, the curator of mammals at London Zoo. Jan explained that London Zoo was ideal due to the primates being housed in easily viewable cages. This allowed the observations of species-specific expressions. He further noted play behaviours which the primates seemingly enjoyed. In that respect, Jan admits he was different from the objective behaviourists of the time. Jan study progressed from the observation of primates' expression, by comparing it to that of humans. He had a specific interest in human laughter, a behaviour specific to humans despite the cultural variations. Jan wraps it up by talking about work at London Zoo, stating that primate behaviours can be treated as taxonomic characteristics which reflects a psychological process. Jan goes on to say that next time he will discuss his return to Burger's Zoo to work with his brother to update the no longer acceptable animal enclosures. He weaves through images and ideas, the last word of every phrase seeming to trigger a parallel line of thought. He can theorize about unseen dimensions and institutional corruption in the same sentence... In his work, Griffin calls this phenomenon 'The Reno Matrix,' an invisible veil hiding what really controls the day to day reality of a changing city. He represents the unseen influence of media with the ubiquity of devices.."

SONIC ACTS FESTIVAL 2019 – HEREAFTER Post-Screening Discussion: Maeve Brennan in conversation with Mirna Belina 22 February – De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Following the screening of Listening in the Dark (44 min, 2018), Maeve Brennan discusses the film with Mirna Belina and takes questions from the audience. Maeve Brennan’s film Listening in the Dark (44 min, 2018) takes a documentary approach, gathering a series of subtle yet penetrating soundings of human beings’ impact on the natural environment. Undisturbed, and largely unchanged for millions of years, bats’ nocturnal rhythms are being increasingly interrupted by the presence of wind turbines. While noting how such well-intentioned technological developments are affecting the atmosphere in ways we do not always appreciate, Brennan also illuminates how scientific research has revealed a whole sensory dimension that we were previously oblivious to. The film circles around the figure of Donald Griffin, pioneering zoologist and early advocate of animal consciousness, whose researches into bat navigation helped shape our understanding of the concept of echolocation. Following his example, Brennan reminds us, too, of other natural marvels – from the mysteries of animal evolution or the deep historical time of geology – that reveal not only our humbling insignificance in the bigger scheme of things, but also the disproportionate damage we are capable of doing to the planet. Director: Maeve Brennan; Director of photography: Jamie Quantrill; Editor: Mariko Montpetit; Producer: Laura Shacham Listening in the Dark was commissioned for the Jerwood/FVU Awards 2018: Unintended Consequences, a collaboration between Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Film and Video Umbrella. Maeve Brennan is a London-based artist and filmmaker. Her recent solo exhibitions include Listening in the Dark at Jerwood Space, London, and Mother’s Tankstation, Dublin; The Drift at Chisenhale Gallery, London, and Spike Island, Bristol (all 2017); and Jerusalem Pink, OUTPOST, Norwich (2016). Have you ever bought a house? I remember the first time I did. It was a really beat up old bungalow with great old bones. I fell in love immediately even though I probably shouldn’t have. The one thing I didn’t do, that I really should have, is hire a realtor. They probably would have noted that the basement was leaky and flooded every time it rained, or that the bathroom was actually just an old back porch with a shower plopped in it, or that we were paying way too much for the work we were going to have to do. I didn’t hire a realtor because, well, I wasn’t very smart about it. Our guest today would have been the perfect guy to help.
