Federally Qualified Health Centers were created during the civil rights era to bring health care to more people, particularly underserved communities. Here in Northern Nevada, HOPES was originally a clinic for patients with HIV but has since expanded into a FQHC providing primary care and other services to around 14,000 patients in the Reno/Sparks area. On this episode of Renoites, I spoke with HOPES CEO Sharon Chamberlain about the history of HOPES and the services they provide, especially the type of services needed by our most vulnerable citizens. We also discussed how health care options have changed during her career, and the priorities of HOPES including harm reduction syringe exchange, sexual health and STI testing, medically assisted treatment for addiction, and mental and behavioral health. HOPES recently opened a second clinic immediately adjacent to the Cares Campus and operates the Hope Springs tiny home transitional housing community right across the street. We talked about the importance of this new location and making health care accessible to the unhoused. Thank you so much for listening! LOCAL EDITION EPISODE! I've been a pseudo-stepmom to my boyfriend's two kids since entering their lives five years ago. We waited a long while before I even met his now 18-year-old daughter and now 12-year-old son. We've very much taken everyone else's perspectives and experiences into consideration when it has come to the pace of our relationship. We're absolutely soulmates, but we're not married yet simply for bigger-picture reasons and also some financial reasons. Although marriage has always been part of the conversation.  We have my boyfriend's two kids 50% of the time, week on and week off. The daughter graduates high school this year, so changes are definitely in store in the coming months. I personally always desired/chose to be child-free. However, I made the choice to accept and welcome my boyfriend's kids into my life. On the good days, I feel like I'm getting a piece of something that I would've not experienced being child-free. But on the tough days, it can be extra hard. I just super appreciate everything my boyfriend has done to help secure respectful relationships between me and his kids. I own Kaia FIT Sierra, a women's fitness and nutrition program with four Reno-Sparks studios that are accessible to all members, as well as online workout options. We focus on personalized training in a group atmosphere through eight group class types to help women find their hard, have fun, achieve their goals, and connect with our community of supportive women. I also manage social media accounts for several small business clients. I have a 19-year background in all things journalism/media/marketing, which has made me an expert in all things social media, including graphic design (which I occasionally teach a class about at the University of Nevada, Reno).  I'm also exploring getting into the commercial real estate market. Oscar Delgado's understanding of the power of compassionate healthcare began when he was a child accompanying his Mom on errands around Reno and Sparks. His Mom helped support her family as a housekeeper in the maternity ward of Washoe Medical Center (now, it's Renown). As one of a handful of Spanish speakers, she was called to provide translation services for Spanish-speaking patients who were navigating a largely English-speaking hospital. They thank Oscar's Mom for her assistance during a stressful time. Those moments stuck with Oscar, and he's devoted his career to ensuring that all the members of his community receive caring, respectful and helpful attention for their medical needs. An experienced, innovative leader, Oscar Delgado serves as chief executive officer of Community Health Alliance, where he works with a team of nearly 300 medical and administrative professionals who meet the needs of primarily low-income patients. With seven clinic locations as well as a mobile clinic serving the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area of northern Nevada, Community Health Alliance provides care to more than 25,000 patients. Oscar provides strategic leadership to the organization, works closely with other community groups, and ensures that the $31 million annual budget of Community Health Alliance provides top-flight care. Under Oscar's leadership, the Community Health Alliance team takes pride in providing healthcare that is the equal of any in the region. When Oscar was named CEO of Community Health Alliance in early 2019, he brought more than a decade of healthcare experience to the position. He had spearheaded outreach and development of programs that improved health outcomes in underrepresented communities. He played important roles in ensuring that multicultural communities got the word about state-sponsored health insurance plans. He worked closely with families of children with learning, physical and behavioral disabilities. Even while he worked long hours on healthcare issues, Oscar also has served since 2012 as a member of the Reno City Council. He's been an effective advocate for quality-of-life improvements in the ward he represents, and he's been a leader for the entire city on issues ranging from zoning and recreation to public safety. But even as he has blossomed into a respected, effective leader, Oscar Delgado never is far from that boy dedicated to the lessons of respectful compassion he learned from his mother. The Truckee River is the lifeblood of the Reno/Sparks Area. It provides 85% of our drinking water, is a vital recreational feature throughout the city and our parks, and it takes a lot of work and energy to keep clean and usable for today and for future generations. Thankfully, there is an organization that is working to bring all the important parties together and make sure we are doing what's needed for the Truckee. One Truckee River (OTR) is a collaboration of public and private partners focused on the implementation of the OTR Management Plan, Phase I. Most of the Truckee River and corridor is managed and regulated by federal, state, and local agencies. OTR seeks to coordinate existing agency's efforts and documents and operates under the 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, Truckee River Foundation. This week's guest on Renoites is Iris Jehle-Peppard, the executive director of One Truckee River. Iris and Conor discuss the importance of the Truckee River to the Reno/Sparks area, and some of the initiatives that have been put in place to protect it. Zoey will also be helping lead the Nevada North League's GRiT program. Zoey talks about how much NICA and mountain biking has enhanced her life. She has made some of her best friends, spent meaningful time with her family on event weekends and at practice, and learned how to challenge herself, both mentally and physically. Zoey also opens up about her struggles with anxiety and depression, something she learned more about from a crash that caused a concussion. Zoey has a wonderful support network, but she still sees a lot of value in being open about her struggles since she feels there are others in her position that might not know they aren't alone. Coming from someone who is just graduating high school, Zoey is wise beyond her years.  GMM is funded by NICA National with support from Rapha Foundation, the Walton Family Foundation, and Continental Tires. Police have found the body of missing teen Naomi Irion after receiving a tip that led them to her gravesite.18-year-old Naomi Irion was last seen on security footage, sitting in her vehicle while waiting for the shuttle she takes to work at Panasonic in the Reno-Sparks area. The footage also shows a man walking from the direction of a homeless camp and lurking among the parked vehicles. Naomi's brother, Casey Valley, says that security footage seemed to show the suspect saying or doing something that made Naomi move from the driver's seat to the passenger seat. Irion was in the passenger's seat as the man drove away. Investigators found Naomi's blue 1992 Mercury Sable on March 15 at the Fernley industrial park. Police arrested Nevada man Troy Driver in connection with Naomi Irion's disappearance. He has been charged with first-degree kidnapping with bail set at $750,000. Today, Matt and Garrett welcome the remarkable Dan Smith to the podcast. Dan is not only a highly successful real estate agent, he is also a manager of an office at Dickson Realty in Reno Sparks, runs Dickson University, their in-house training center, is a father of four, and serves his community as a Bishop. Despite these many commitments, Dan has been able to fulfill his commitment to eliminate weekends from his real estate work, and he shares the details of how exactly he has managed to achieve this with listeners here today. You're going to want to get a pen and notepad for this episode! Dan begins by sharing how he started his career in real estate, the current level of his business, and how it has been going up every year. He goes on to detail his thought process of running the business independently, the limitations he had before he found a partner, how his 'why' has helped him to structure his schedule, and the concept of releasing control. He talks about giving people he trains the freedom to be themselves and not duplicate him, and highlights the vital operational elements that allow you to have freedom on weekends and build a system that works. Dan finishes up by describing the offer FAQ sheet they have designed, how they use the Marco Polo app, and by advising agents to look out for partners that match their core values. It's been going up each year, and I've loved that level of production, and we're going to continue to ramp it up." "I live a very full and abundant life. I hate being called busy... I do not portray myself as busy, but I live a full life." "For me, it wasn't about just cutting time out that I didn't want to work. It was creating time for all the things that actually matter the most to me." "I've learned most people don't have that overall guiding principle. And if you don't have the overall guiding principle, you've got nothing guiding you. You're just kind of floating around out there taking things as they can." "I woke up one day at three in the morning with a panic attack because I could not handle everything that was on my plate. I had to write to the company owners that I was dropping the ball on all these areas, and I just had a wake-up moment. And that's when we really started diving into how we were going to get some support." "I own the experience that I give my clients. To try to have somebody else be a huge part of that equation did not compute with me if they went and showed property with somebody else on a Saturday so that I could be somewhere with my family. It felt like I was just outsourcing." "You have to craft the experience so well that you're not hiring people to be you. You're finding people that have your same values and vision that play the roles in your experience." "I've crafted here the key things that you need to say and the key things that our clients experience. Other than that, they have full autonomy to be themselves. I don't hire robots. I hire people with the same values." "Once you empower them to make their own decisions, they know the key things that need to happen. They get to take that and use it with their own clients that we're building a business and an experience that anyone who works with the Dan Smith team gets to take that exact experience and go use it on their own clients too because it's shareable." "Our FAQ sheet was not designed to protect my weekends. It was designed because we were tired of getting bid out of offers."  "I can train somebody to be a host or to be a waiter, but I can't train how they're going to treat my people and how they're going to feel after the experience. So I can train anybody to do what I do, but I can't train how to treat people. And so I find people who treat people nicely, and then I train them." "People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it. People will see that kind of a commitment and attract more business." "If you don't know what you really want, you're just going to spend your time doing what you think other people want."
