On today's episode, we're going to go join the fight against alien bugs, join the Roughnecks and kick some ass, and in the meantime, try to sharpen our pet psychic skills, while revisit the sci-fi cult classic, Starship Troopers (1997). This movie was directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Ed Neumeier. This movie stars Casper Van Dien (Casper Meets Wendy, Sleepy Hollow), Dina Meyer (Beverly Hills 90210, Johnny Mnemonic), Denise Richards (Valentine, Tammy and the T-Rex), Jake Busey (The Frighteners, From Dusk till Dawn:The Series), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog), Patrick Muldoon (Stigmata, Spiders 3D), and Michael Ironside (Scanners, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II).This movie was seriously misunderstood at the time of its release, and has now enjoyed a re-evaluation of the content, and just how much of a satire it is. This movie is a good time as an action flick, and is highly entertaining for those who watch it!Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.comFollow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. After the massive failure of SHOWGIRLS, Paul Verhoeven decided that, for his next film, he'd return to the tried and true genre of science fiction. In doing so, he retimed with ROBOCOP scribe Ed Neumeier for an adaptation of a decades old novel by legendary sci-fi author Robert Heinlein. The resulting film, STARSHIP TROOPERS, is a departure from its source material in both plot and theme. Although it has since come to be regarded as one of Verhoeven's best films, at the time of its release, it was reviled by critics and ignored by audiences. In this episode, we trace the film from its origins as a novel, through its subsequent adaptation and release, and its newfound cult status. We are keeping this flying saucer spinning until the damn tractor beam falls off here for 2001: A Space Augusty. All month we are doing alien content and we hope you think it's... out of this world. ...don't worry, the jokes on the episode are better than that. This week, Producer C.H.A.D. swings by to talk about Paul Verhoeven's sometimes misinterpreted masterpiece, Starship Troopers. Verhoeven is obviously a master of satire, but it seems audiences mistook Johnny Rico as the American Jesus instead of a cautionary tale of the follies of fascism. Writer, Ed Neumeier, previously worked with Verhoeven on Robocop and this reunion is nothing short of gory, tongue in cheek bliss. We talk all about how Neumeier allegedly was working on an idea called, "Bug Hunt at Outpost 9," which was retconned to be an adaptation of Robert Anson Heinlein's 1959 novella. The film stars Casper Van Dien as the citizen hopeful, Johnny Rico. Van Dien uses the "Freddy Got Fingered" defense in explaining why the film was a financial flop. Find out why his reasoning is rather sound in the episode. Denise Richards plays Carmen Ibanez, who does not play any kind of guitar despite her namesake. Luckily, there is still a stringed instrument played by Jake Busey. That's right. It's the neon violin, which is tacky, terrible, and tantalizingly schlocky. Clancy Brown and Michael Ironside deliver what Jake contends are their top tier performances. Basil Poledouris does the music, and while not his most rousing score, it gets the job done. His daughter also gets a cameo. We talk about the sequels which vary wildly in quality from super bad to just kinda bad. Neumeier continued to direct, but even legendary effects maestro, Phil Tippett, helmed an installment. Did you ever watch Roughnecks? Because we briefly talk about that show too. Briefly. We spend a bit more grey matter and time on the Starship Troopers comic books, one of which was written by Transmetropolitan writer, Warren Ellis. After the box office failure of FLESH + BLOOD, Paul Verhoeven sought to fully immerse himself in American culture in a bid to fully understand how to make films for the American market, so he packed his bags, left his native country and moved to America. Not long after arriving, he had an opportunity to direct a big budget American action movie for Orion Pictures. That film, ROBOCOP, would not only announce him as a major force to be reckoned with in American cinema, but it created a cultural milestone, whose presence is still felt today. In this episode, we'll discuss the creation of the film, from the inspiration behind the script by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, through Verhoeven's attachment, the film's production, and its ongoing legacy. With over 30,000 followers on the Amazon-owned platform, Fleeksie labels herself as the “world's most pointless Twitch streamer.” While she dips into a variety of games here and there, she's most often found in the Just Chatting category, watching videos and keeping up with her chat. stop going into people live streams and asking "how are you" we live. we streaming. other people are watching. the room is not on fire. things are ok. just comment on whats happening. ask someone else in the chat how they are doing if you want small talk everytime i say "im good how are you" i feel a little puke in the back of my throat rise up. its actually painful responding to that question while ik other people who been watching for 45 mins heard me say it 36 times to all the people before you came up in here with your small talk Dainty - How are you? https://www.tableoc.com/2020/09/10/ninja-is-back-exclusively-on-twitch/ After a months-long period of “will he or won't he” with two determined suitors, Twitch and YouTube, streaming megastar Tyler “Ninja” Blevins has announced that his post-Mixer streaming return will happen “only” on Twitch. Last year, Blevins signed an exclusive deal with Microsoft-owned streaming platform Mixer. In June, Microsoft abruptly announced that Mixer had reached the end of the line and encouraged streamers and viewers to move over to Facebook instead. Blevins was reportedly offered a Facebook deal that nearly doubled his multi-million dollar Mixer deal, but he turned it down. Now, months later, he's back where he started: on Twitch. Today, Twitch launches Versus — a suite of competitive tools that will let creators on the site organize and manage their own tournaments — which promises to bring those agonies and ecstasies to any streamer who feels like pubstomping their community. While the feature is in closed beta for now, collegiate esports leagues, game devs, and Twitch Rivals competitors (along with some other Twitch streamers) will have access starting today. There is a waitlist you can join if you're interested in trying out Versus for yourself. Dainty - This seems like a great step for both e-sports and Twitch as a whole. What do you think about this move? Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake brings the classic back for Xbox One, PS4, and PC Ubisoft is bringing back one of its most legendary games with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, a modern version of the classic action-adventure game set for release on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on January 21st, 2021. The company says that the new version of The Sands of Time is emphatically Ubisoft's first full-fledged remake, not a remaster or reboot. Ubisoft Pune & Ubisoft Mumbai rebuilt the original game from the ground up using Ubisoft's modern AnvilNext Engine, complete with new motion capture animation, new assets, and some adjustments to the gameplay for modern audiences. The Sands of Time Remake still strongly resembles the original, though, with the same storyline and gameplay. Don't expect a full-scale reimagining like the recent Final Fantasy 7 Remake. That said, the company is promising that it has enhanced the camera controls and combat system with the aim of improving on those aspects from their 2008 iterations. FullBump - Are you like me? I have never played this series at all and am actually kind of excited to try an older classic.Entertainment News MGM Is Developing a ROBOCOP Prequel Series That Focuses on a Young Dick Jones I've got some exciting news for all you RoboCop fans out there! MGM is developing a prequel series that will focus on the life of a young Dick Jones. I'm sure you all remember the villainous and corrupt Senior Vice President of Omni Consumer Products, who at the end of the original movie, ended up blown away by RoboCop epically shooting him out of a boardroom window! Such an awesomely classic ‘80s movie death. There is also a new sequel for the original film that's in development, which is based on the original plans from RoboCop screenwriters Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner. Neill Blomkamp was originally attached to direct, but after he dropped out he was replaced with Abe Forsythe (Little Monsters). When talking about the ideas that they are playing with, Neumeier goes on to say: “There's the idea of doing things about business and law enforcement in the city of Detroit a minute-and-a-half in the future, it would be a way to do all sorts of stories about business and tech, Silicon Valley, corporations, snakes in suits, cops, all that. It's a wonderful rich tapestry. “So we've been talking about it and I think we have an interesting story. It's fun to work with a younger version of the Dick Jones we meet in RoboCop. He's an actualised corporate predator [in the move] but nobody necessarily starts out being the bad guy. Daintiest - In the wake of the popularity of retro synth music/future retroism this seems like great timing for a show like this. What's your take? THE WALKING DEAD Will End with an Extended Season 11 The Walking Dead's upcoming 11th season will be its last. Season 11 was originally set to air this October in line with the show's normal Fall TV cycle. However, the coronavirus pandemic means fans will only get the season 10 “finale” this year and Season 11 in 2021. Now, the upcoming season will be expanded from the 16-episode norm to a whopping 24 episodes over the course of the next two years. This means the series finale will take place in 2022. It's sad news for a lot of long-term and dedicated viewers. But Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier fans won't have to say goodbye to their faves forever. The aforementioned Deadline report reveals that actors Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride will go on to star in a Walking Dead spin-off series. The Daryl and Carol adventure will debut sometime in 2023. It would also be a spoiler for their future if it wasn't so obvious that they are basically unkillable at this point. FullBump - It's kind of crazy to think something that has been a TV and nerd culture staple is coming to an end. What are your thoughts and how do you feel about the spin off announcement?BOLD PREDICTIONS - Brought to you by the Tighe UpI cant tell you what the next must watch tv show will be but The mandalorian will have higher ratings than its first season while the Witcher will not. This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan watch the most subtle satire ever made — Starship Troopers. What exactly is this movie skewering? We're not sure. Our wild ride through the prophecy laden science fiction of the 1980s continues, bringing us to the meanest possible streets of old Detroit. With it's avalanche of bravado, social commentary and wit, the undeniable classic Robocop is ripe for another installment, even today. But how does the 2014 remake stack up against the OG Robo, and what does it offer in the dialogue about corporate ethics, gentrification and policing, started by the Verhoven original? We get to all that via a dense talk about growing up with the '87 version, and by peeling back those many layers woven by Paul Verhoven, Ed Neumeier, Michael Miner, and company. "Go Robo!" Recorded LIVE at the Hollywood Improv in front of a sold out crowd, we had an amazing lineup of guests, starting off with a Starship Troopers reunion on stage of Casper Van Dien and Ed Neumeier. Next up was Jai Rodriguez, star of Rent on Broadway and Queer Eye For the Straight Guy, with an amazing story about a date he had with a co-star. We then chatted with Milana Vayntraub, best known from her AT&T commercials, and we learned that she is unable to help you with your bill. Jamie Campbell Bower from Twilight and Harry Potter stopped in, and made the controversial statement that between the two, he prefers Twilight. We capped off the night with a Glee-union with Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, who played a best friends game so we could see just how well they know each other. This one is jam packed with fun- it's THE NIGHT TIME SHOW!

Lady P and Anne Marie Kelly are joined by Ed Neumeier, the writer and producer of ROBOCOP and STARSHIP TROOPERS, to talk early science fiction films. Their discussion centers primarily on the 36th film on the Sight and Sound Greatest Of All Time List: Fritz Lang's 1927 German Expressionist classic, METROPOLIS. They give a brief overview of the socio-political environment at the time of production (yep, that means Hitler), and talk about how the film co-opts the styles and themes of several early-20th century art movements. Plus they discuss how Robot Maria has left her fingerprints on every subsequent android assembled since METROPOLIS' release. For the second topic, they talk about Ed's personal cyborg creations. Ed details his path to becoming a screenwriter, and how he ended up a producer on ROBOCOP by his late-20s. He also talks about writing STARSHIP TROOPERS (a favorite around these parts), and the process of turning Robert Heinlein's ring-wing polemic into an anti-war satire. He also touches on the precariousness of early success, and what aspiring screenwriters should do if they want to follow in his footsteps.
