Turn Your Panic Into Power Before Every Performance | Joel Kinnaman

Leave an Amazon Rating or Review for my New York Times Bestselling book, Make Money Easy! Check out the full episode: https://greatness.lnk.to/1933DM Joel Kinnaman didn't walk into acting with confidence. He applied to theater school four times before getting in. Then the panic attacks started. Before every performance, his mouth would fill with water. A bucket was always nearby. Didn't matter if it was ten people in the audience. The breaking point came in front of the entire school. He froze mid-sentence, repeating "Donna Maria" over and over until the silence swallowed the room. He walked off stage, slammed a door, stood there, then walked back and finished the whole thing like a robot. That's what commitment to a calling actually looks like. Not clean. Not confident. Just refusing to quit. You can be wildly successful and still be quietly falling apart inside. Joel Kinnaman has appeared in some of the most talked-about shows in Hollywood. He has starred in The Killing, Robocop, House of Cards, Altered Carbon, and is currently in his fifth season of For All Mankind. And he will be the first to tell you that none of that made the war inside his head any quieter. Before every live theater performance for three straight years, he threw up. He kept a bucket backstage. The negative voices in his mind were relentless, and he spent years drinking heavily, using drugs, and force-feeding himself in a desperate attempt to hide the shame he felt about a physical condition that had left him feeling deformed since childhood. What changed everything was not a breakthrough moment. It was a choice to stop running from the fear and bury himself in the work. He memorized a 105-minute one-man show in 10 days, playing 16 different characters, and walked on stage without throwing up for the first time. That experience taught him something he still carries: preparation is armor. The deeper a role is in your bones, the more freedom you have to be alive inside it. He is still working on the personal side. He describes himself as a disaster in relationships, not from a lack of care, but from years of treating his career as the only thing that could not touch him. He talks about wanting to find the balance between the structure that builds trust and the childlike wonder that keeps him creative. That tension is where this conversation lives. Joel's IMDB In this episode you will: Understand how shame about a physical condition called pectus excavatum triggered an eating disorder that took years to unpack and overcome Discover how Joel turned debilitating stage fright and a 3-year pattern of pre-performance vomiting into a breakthrough that rewired his relationship with fear Learn why preparation is the most underrated performance skill and why Joel insists on being at least 3 nights ahead on every scene he shoots Hear why Joel sees himself as a different man in his career versus his personal relationships, and what he believes he needs to change to close that gap Explore how Joel uses psilocybin experiences, breathwork, and the Buddhist concept of shepa to create space between triggers and reaction in his daily life For more information go to https://lewishowes.com/1933 For more Greatness text PODCAST to +1 (614) 350-3960 Follow The Daily Motivation for essential highlights from The School of Greatness More SOG episodes we think you'll love: Lewis Howes Solo [7 Habits To Be Happier] Josh Groban The Jonas Brothers TOPICS Joel Kinnaman, stage fright, eating disorder recovery, pectus excavatum, performance anxiety, preparation as armor, shepa, psilocybin, self-loathing, personal growth, For All Mankind, relationship consistency Get more from Lewis! Why didn't they bother with any of the TV sitcom stuff like in the '87? Why did we need to have the wife and son be such larger characters? Was Joel Kinnaman right for Murphy? And speaking of Murphy, why are so many people calling him by his first name in this movie? Did any other film waste Michael Kenneth Williams' talent as much as this one did? And what in WORLD were they thinking going for the PG-13 rating? PLUS: “Dr. Norton? Commissioner Gordon. Commissioner Gordon?

ALL MY FRIENDS ARE DEAD (#AMFAD) (101 Films) sees a group of young people being picked off by a returning serial killer.... WINNER (Signature Entertainment) is based on the real-life experiences of Reality Winner, who was charged with leaking classified documents to the media... THE IMPOSTERS (Miracle Media) finds a young woman falling in love with another woman, only to find she has an ulterior motive...   Our Short shot is a fan film: BATMAN BEYOND: YEAR ONE finds Terry McGill meeting a young woman who may not be as she seems. Click the link to check out the whole film! Our DTV Throwback is Olivier Gruner's first feature film, ANGEL TOWN, in which he plays a college student who gets involved in the dirty dealings of the neighborhood where he is renting. This is currently available on Amazon Prime in a decent widescreen print (certainly better quality than the trailer!) My Fame Explained

In this episode Larry Gilbert sat down with the multi-talented actor Oliver Trevena, a name synonymous with success in Hollywood, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship. With over 20 years in the entertainment industry, Trevena has seamlessly navigated various roles from acclaimed TV host to award-winning actor, producer, and philanthropist. Trevena's journey in the spotlight began with his charismatic presence as a TV host for major shows like Young Hollywood and The Hollywood Reporter, where he interviewed some of the biggest names in entertainment. He's also fronted red carpets for prestigious award shows, including The Grammys and The American Music Awards. But his career didn't stop there. Over the last few years, Trevena has transitioned from hosting to acting, and what a journey it has been. Oliver has starred in over a dozen feature films, sharing the screen with Hollywood heavyweights like Gerard Butler in Plane, Nina Dobrev and Aaron Eckhart in The Bricklayer, and Olga Kurylenko and Harvey Keitel in Paradox Effect, the latter earning him the Breakout Actor Award at the Rome Film Festival. With the recent Toronto Film Festival premiere of The Cut, where he co-stars alongside Orlando Bloom, Trevena's name continues to rise in Hollywood's elite circles. While his acting resume grows, Trevena is also making waves behind the camera. He produced and stars in Another Day in America, which recently hit the festival circuit, and he just wrapped production on Icefall, starring alongside Joel Kinnaman and Danny Huston. Trevena's upcoming projects include two television shows: Beachy Head, which he co-created with Danny Cannon and stars Dougray Scott, and London Son, both of which he is producing with Pulp Fiction producer Lawrence Bender. Beyond Hollywood, Trevena's impact is felt on a global scale through his philanthropic efforts. For over a decade, he's served as an ambassador for Not for Sale, a worldwide organization fighting human trafficking and modern-day slavery. His dedication earned him an award from the Duchess of York. His passion for humanitarian work doesn't stop there—Trevena produced a documentary in India, spotlighting the importance of female education and raising awareness about forced child marriage. Trevena is not just an entertainer; he's also a savvy entrepreneur. As the founder of Ollywood Media, he's built a thriving business centered around investments, production, and brand creation. Recognized as one of the "Top 20 Entrepreneurs to Watch," Trevena has merged his deep connections within the entertainment world with his creative vision to launch global brands like Allsaints, DOGPOUND, and Next Health. His most recent venture, Caliwater, co-founded with close friend Vanessa Hudgens, has attracted an all-star group of investors including Gerard Butler, Glen Powell, and Ryan Tedder. With a packed schedule of upcoming films, TV projects, and entrepreneurial ventures, Oliver Trevena continues to redefine what it means to be a multi-hyphenate in the modern entertainment industry. Whether he's acting, producing, or leading philanthropic initiatives, Trevena's passion for storytelling and making a difference shines through every endeavor. Tune in to the full episode to hear Oliver's inspiring story of perseverance, the lessons he's learned from his 20+ years in the entertainment business, and how he balances his Hollywood success with his business ventures. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for information about all your favorite fictional Universes.Marvel's upcoming Fantastic Four has found its big, bad, planet-eating villain in the form of British actor, Ralph Ineson. While not necessarily a household name, many fans will recognize the character actor from his various appearances from franchises including Game of Thrones and Harry Potter. John Malkovich also joined the cast last week in an undisclosed role.  During an earnings conference call last week WB Discovery head-honcho David Zaslav revealed a film titled Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is actively being developed. The script is in early development and the studio has attached Gollum, himself, Andy Serkis, as the director, with a 2026 release being targeted. Elsewhere in Middle Earth, Amazon treated us to the first trailer for the upcoming second season of The Rings of Power alongside the announcement that it would premiere August 29. Ahead of his animated DCU debut in Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo has been announced to have joined Peacemaker for its second season, returning as the character of Rick Flag Sr. from the animated series. Grillo is the unique position of not only playing a character in live action and animation, but the character is also the father of the previously seen Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman in both Suicide Squad films. The highly anticipated Kathryn Hahn-led Agatha Harkness Disney Plus series, which acts as a follow up to WandaVision, has been no stranger to title changes, previously being titled Agatha: House of Harkness, Coven of Chaos, and most recently Darkhold Diaries. The marketing seemed to be leaning into the chaos and confusion, with the new title The Lying Witch with Great Wardrobe teased in a deleted post, before eventually announcing the title as Agatha All Along. Additionally, the series will premiere with 2-episodes, September 18 and a teaser is expected to debut this Friday.  NFL tight end and Taylor Swift's boyfriend, Travis Kelce, secured his first major acting role in Ryan Murphy's FX horror series Grotesquerie. Details about his role remain unclear for now. The Office reboot has been greenlit by Peacock, with an official synopsis revealing the documentary crew's new subject: a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and its publisher's efforts to revive it with volunteer reporters. During their Up Front presentation, Disney revealed early looks at Daredevil Born Again and Ironheart but currently both of these trailers are unavailable to the public. Daredevil is expected to release in March of next year and will be 9 episodes long. Ironheart is expected to be released sometime next year. Glen Powell is in early talks to star in the next film from director JJ Abrams. At the moment, plot details for the project are being kept under wraps. Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery are breaking ground in streaming with a bundled offering featuring Disney+, Hulu and Max. A launch date and price point have not yet been announced. Comcast also announced a similar upcoming bundle that will offer Peacock, Netflix, and AppleTV+ at a discount price. Prime Video's animated Batman series, Batman: Caped Crusader, executive produced by JJ Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm, will premiere all 10 episodes on August 1. The announcement came with character descriptions, first-look images, and an official logline. Peacock has ordered a second season of the Seth MacFarlane-created series Ted, which serves as a prequel to the two feature films of the same name. Hiroyuki Sanada, star and producer of FX's limited series Shōgun, has closed a deal to reprise his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga for a potential second season. FX is finalizing deals as part of efforts to continue Shōgun following its commercial and critical success.

Storytelling is our most powerful device to better understand the human condition. The creativity required to craft and share a story well told is both an art and a way of being. Joel Kinnaman is one such being. A star ascendant on screens big and small whose Hollywood career was born with his incendiary turn in 2011's The Killing, kickstarting leading roles in films like The Suicide Squad and RoboCop, and television shows like House of Cards, Hanna, and For All Mankind. The occasion for this conversation is Silent Night. Featuring Joel as a grief-stricken father hell-bent on revenge, it's an absolutely unhinged, John Woo-helmed vigilante actioner with a unique twist: zero dialogue—a conceit that showcases Joel's physicality as a performer. This conversation canvasses Joel's unique path from a wayward youth in Stockholm to one of Hollywood's most in-demand leading men. It's about his creative process, the importance of authenticity, and how his relationship with fear frames the success he enjoys today. Plus: an insane Nicholas Cage story and more. This is a fun hang—I hope you enjoy it. Having to play the role of a father who goes on a quest for revenge over the holidays with no lines of dialogue, the film relies on Kinnaman's physical performance to drive most of the story.
