Eisner Award nominated comics writer Tate Brombal (Barbalien: Red Planet) returns to the show today to chat with me about his new DC Comics Elseworlds seven issue mini-series Green Lantern Dark. Last June Tate was a guest during our Pride Month coverage where he introduced the world to the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos which he is co-writing with James Tynion, a LGBTQ+ horror-hero coming-of-age series reintroducing us to the classic Universal Monsters creatures through a distinctly queer lens, now on its twelfth issue. We get into his own introduction to the Elseworlds Imprint through his uncle, how new Lantern Rina Mori was developed as a character, and how a chance dinner conversation created the unlikely creative partnership with artist Werther Dell'Edera. It's also been announced that he's taking on the role of writing the new Batgirl series resurrecting Cassandra Cain for her first ongoing solo series in decades with veteran artist Takeshi Miyazawa. I get to hear all about Tate's research for the book that involves watching Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and other martial arts movies to refresh his skills on scripting fight scenes and how the nucleus of the book will be focused on the relationship between Cassandra and Lady Shiva. At the end, Tate clues me in to one of the best deep dive book options for writer Mary Shelley research and we catch up on where things are with the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos. Find Tate on X and Instagram Green Lantern Dark from the publisher On a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by monsters, the battle between good and evil ended long ago--and evil won. Now darkness prevails as humanity struggles to survive in the corrupted wasteland that remains. Only one hero is said to haunt what's left of our shadowed cities, the one who wields the mystical green flame that could return light to a dark world--The Green Lantern. But she's been missing for years, and on the isolated island of New England, Solomon Grundy's undead army only grows larger and more powerful every night... Celebrated horror artist of smash hit Something is Killing the Children Werther Dell'Edera teams with rising-star writer Tate Brombal (House of Slaughter) to bring you a chilling tale of desperation, hope, and resurrection from the bitter remains of the fan-favorite Tangent Universe! Batgirl from the publisher Hold on to your seats, clutch your pearls, and rejoice in celebration because on November 6, Cassandra Cain is taking center stage in her first solo Batgirl series in nearly two decades, courtesy of writer Tate Brombal (Green Lantern Dark, House of Slaughter) and artist Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel, Mech Cadet Yu). When a deadly group of assassins shows up to kill Cassandra Cain, Lady Shiva must come to the rescue, and they're forced to put their complicated past aside and work together as mother and daughter to ensure they make it out alive. Unfortunately, things are never as easy as they seem, and Batgirl must embark on a jaw-dropping, martial-arts filled adventure in her quest for truth and justice…and revenge?! This is a Batgirl unlike any other so don't miss the opportunity to dive into the psyche of one of Gotham City's deadliest fighters, while exploring her deep and complex relationship with her mother. “World's Greatest Dick” (November 10, 1996) Sally Solomon is a straight, cis character, but for the first two seasons of the 3rd Rock from the Sun, there was this queer or trans aura around her. This episode dispels it, for the most part, and allows the writers to craft storylines and jokes that are no longer different versions of the “man trapped in a woman's body” trope. Drew and Glen disagree on exactly what the gay man trying to date her thinks is going on with Sally, but for all that could go wrong with this kind of plot, it's not that bad. The ending sucks, sure, but we point out how it could have played out better. There is actually a relationship between salmagundi, a dish that is basically charcuterie posing as a salad, and Solomon Grundy, the Superman villain. Our Batman two-parter concludes with a discussion of Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, published by DC Comics! This popular miniseries serves as a de facto sequel to Batman: Year One, despite marked differences in size, tone and style, as a serial killer known as Holiday terrorizes Gotham City's underworld over the course of a tumultuous year, providing the backdrop for a shift in the city's criminal power balance from organized crime toward garish supervillains like the Joker, Scarecrow and Poison Ivy. Can District Attorney Harvey Dent bring down Carmine “The Roman” Falcone with his sanity intact? (Spoiler alert: No.) And can this influential tale survive a night in that haunted house of crime capers known as ... The Comics Canon? In This Episode! A signal cuts through the misty skyline of the decrepit Gotham City; the light in the darkness. The Caped Crusader. The World's Greatest Detective. Bats. In this week's episode of the Layered Butter Podcast; Raf, Rod and Jordan are whisked away to spoiler territory as they dive deep into the latest vision of the iconic Dark Knight; Matt Reeves' The Batman. From the heavy echoes of his boots across the rain soaked pavement to his quiet eyes, darting across crime scenes; Pattinson's Batman is the living shadow of vengeance – striking fear deep into the hearts of the crime infested underworld of Gotham. From an incredible supporting cast to the absolute mastery of Reeves' vision and Giacchino's powerful score – this episode unravels the many moving pieces that make this film one to remember. But as a film that is confident in exploring The World's Greatest Detective – were we left wanting more from the Riddler's cat-and-mouse games? Was exploring a young, brash and inexperienced Bruce Wayne an inspired choice or does it take away from Batman's own superiority? Or that suit? Do we miss the campy Adam West costumes to the neckbrace on Keaton to the nipples on Clooney; how does Pattinson's Year 2 Suit stack up against the rest? Is RPatz too emo for Bruce Wayne? Where does he go from here – Court of Owls? Hush? With a rogues gallery as iconic as Batman, is there Do meta-humans such as Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze or Solomon Grundy exist in this Gotham? This episode takes a dive into all things Caped Crusader, pulling the curtain back on how The Batman influences, influenced and pushes the Superhero genre forward. Episode SummaryTime, can we get more of it? How about a redo? Raincheck anyone? All viable questions. Even though the nursery rhyme Solomon Grundy is metaphorical, illogical and perhaps nonsensical in nature, I have to admit there is something to be learned from it. Until we can crack the time code, if it's crackable, we remain bound by the finite concentrates that encapsulate time. This is where Solomon Grundy continues to speak to us.Solomon's brief life teaches us some valuable points as to how to posture ourselves with this priceless finite commodity we call time. The Justice Society battles Psycho Pirate, Solomon Grundy, and deals with having Johnny Thunder as a member of the team.Affiliate link included.Transcript below:Graham:The Justice Society battles Solomon Grundy, Psycho Pirate and a mysterious visitor from the future. Find out all about it as we take a look at All-Star Comics Archives Vol. 7, straight ahead. [Intro Music]Announcer:Welcome to the Classy Comics podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise Idaho, here is your host Adam Graham. Graham:Some of the earliest collections published by D.C. were the hardcover D.C. archives. These books cost $50 each at the time of their original pressing and they started producing them in the 90s. This particular book was released in 2001 and All-Star Comics Archives Vol. 7 collects issues 29 to 33 of All-Star Comics and features the Justice Society of America, the world's first superhero team. This volume features their post-war adventures and the good news is that if you want to read the stories, you don't have to hunt down a copy of this book. You can purchase individual issues of All-Star Comics out of the comixology or Amazon Kindle comic store for $1.99 an issue and so for five issues that adds up to be $10 and if you wait for a half off or buy one get one free sale, it's even a less than that. The big advantage of this particular book is the introductions from Roy Thomas. Roy Thomas was a great comics writer in his own right and he was also noted for a lot of nostalgic comics, comics that were set in the Golden Age or fleshed out Golden Age continuity. For example, at Marvel, he wrote The Invaders and at D.C., he wrote the All Star Squadron and he just loves the Golden Age of comics, has such a wonderful appreciation and knowledge and so reading books that have his introductions on it, that is really the big benefit. So, that's the one thing you miss if you read them digitally.Alright, so let's go ahead and we will get to talking about the Justice Society and the issues. In this book the roster is set. Now, the comics are approximately forty pages an issue, which is down from the Golden Age and in accordance with that there was a shrinking of the team. At times there were as many as 9 members of the Justice Society but this was shrunk down to six plus a secretary. More on that in a moment. The team was made up of The Flash, in this case Jay Garrick, Green Lantern, who is Alan Scott and not part of any intergalactic Green Lantern Corps, Hawkman, then there's Doctor Midnite. He is a hero who was blinded but discovered that he was able to see in complete darkness and also figured out a way to make goggles so that he could see when it was light out. Some have considered him a predecessor to Daredevil. Then there's the Atom, Al Pratt. The Golden Age Atom didn't have any striking power. He was just a short guy who was also really tough and could really hit very hard, though later he would gain some super strength. Then there was Johnny Thunder, who at times I found to be annoying but sometimes, and I think mostly in this volume, I found to be amusing. He is a bit of a dope. He's a private investigator, not a whole lot of talent or fighting ability, a very comical fellow until he says the magic words “say you”, or an appropriate variation thereof and The Thunder Bolt, this magical pink creature appears and is able to do Johnny's bidding and often resolve problems. Wonder Woman is the secretary of the Justice Society at this point. This is a really odd situation that feels really, really sexist as well as a bit stupid. You send the Atom and Johnny Thunder out on missions but Wonder Woman sits back at the headquarters. So, it's a question of what's going on.Wonder Woman had met with and teamed up with the Justice Society back in All-Star comics number 13 ...
Supergirl battles a bunch of villains we don't care about, gets a new status quo, and then goes to Mongolia to have a trilingual adventure.Affiliate link included.Transcript:Graham:Supergirl's powers surge out of control as she faces the Fatal Five as we look at Supergirl: The Girl of No Tomorrow, straight ahead.[Intro Music]Announcer:Welcome to the Classy Comics podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise Idaho, here is your host Adam Graham.Graham:This is the third volume of Supergirl stories under the D.C. Rebirth label and this has some callbacks to the previous volumes. Volume 2 ended on a cliffhanger with her seeming to be shot by Katherine Grant. However, she wasn't actually shot by Kat Grant. As Volume 3 starts, we found out that Kat was giving a speech elsewhere. The person who shot her and was pretending to be Miss Grant was none other than the sorceress Selena. However, what she did shoot Supergirl with, has caused her powers to rage out of control. Something that has not been uncommon in the D.C. Universe. If you'll recall our review of Flash Volume 5, negative the Flash also got hit with something, in this case the negative speed force, which caused his powers to rage out of control. So, there's a lot of that going around in the D.C. Universe. However, the main focus of this story is on the battle between Supergirl and the so called Fatal Five, which is led by the Emerald Empress along with the aforementioned Selena, Indigo, Solomon Grundy and Magog. And at first glance this really does appear to be a bit of a motley crew. They're trying to stop Supergirl from doing major damage in the future. Why this is something Solomon Grundy would care about? I really don't know. I guess Grundy can just be relied upon to create menace, you know, doesn't really care much what the reason is and I think he and Magog, for that matter, kind of serve the same purpose in this. While the Emerald Empress, Indigo and Selena tend to monologue quite a bit in explaining their motives, in having conversations with Kat Grant. Some of it, I think particularly Indigo, comes off as just a bit sanctimonious. Emerald Empress has at least a believable motive for why she's doing what she's doing as she believes that Supergirl's going to cause the death of her father but their methods really make it hard to sympathize much with them. Also as part of their plan. in order to undermine the public's trust in Supergirl, Indigo manages to have it exposed that the Cyborg Superman who she fought back in volume 1 was actually her father and that she and the D.E.O., the Department of Extra Normal Operations. are keeping him alive in a tank after all the mess that he created. She tries to explain that she's just showing him the same sort of compassion that people on earth had shown her and I think that's very true to her character. That's very true to who Supergirl is but it's not received well by folks in National City who feel lied to because she didn't reveal her relationship to the Cyborg Superman and I should say there are some one of two Cyborg Superman's. This should not be confused with the Cyborg Superman who was Hank Henshaw in a previous episode on Superman. That's another cyborg Superman. So yeah, D.C. continuity. The story becomes really a pretty big melee with a lot of fighting and action. That's decent enough maybe a bit repetitive. It doesn't go on forever but for quite a while. In the course of it, Supergirl is able to have some surgery performed on her which stops her from literally exploding, which is what the massive increase in her powers was going to do at the start of the plot but she still doesn't have it under control and also Jeremiah and Eliza her adoptive parents get into the act and really ha...

And this year, there are quite a number of new comics devoted to love and relationships...and with curious twists. And speaking of twists, they begin their show by discussing the first two issues of the new Image Comics series, Twisted Romance. This is a four-issue anthology published weekly throughout the month of February, and in issues #1 and #2 we see comics contributions from the creators Alex de Campo, Katie Shelly, Sarah Horrocks, Alejandra Gutierrez, and Meredith McClaren, with short prose offerings from Magen Cubed and Vita Ayala. From there they go to Death of Love #1 (Image Comics), written by Justin Jordan with art by Donal Delay. Much like Twisted Romance, this is a skewed look at love -- and this one includes assholes and drugs. Following that, Gene and Derek discuss one more recent release from Image Comics, Tee Franklin and Jenn St-onge's Bingo Love. This is a unique LGBT narrative that focuses on the relationship of older citizens. While intended for teen readers, this is a graphic novel that can be appreciated by all ages. After that they visit, once again, the wacky world of Craig Yoe and his partner Clizia Gussoni. Weird Love, Vol. 6: So This Is Love! (IDW Publishing/Yoe Books) is the latest collection of their Weird Love series, classic romance stories from the 1950s and 1960s that not only appear warped to our contemporary eyes, but were probably strange to their original audiences. And finally, the guys wrap up their special Valentine's Day episode with an offering from DC Comics, Young Monsters in Love. Much like last October's DC House of Horror, this is an extra-long seasonal anthology issue written and drawn by a who's who of DC creators. Included are stories focusing on, among others, Swamp Thing, Man-Bat, Raven, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Solomon Grundy, Deadman, the Creature Commandos, and (one of the guys' favorites) Monsieur Mallah and the Brain. Love is definitely in the air this week!

He also teased Dig's friendship with Dinah Drake, the new Black Canary, as well as the looming threat of General Walker and Team Arrow's visit to Russia. About his role in the team, he said, “He's a serviceman. He's a soldier. He's the guy who lays on a grenade. So that's what he immediately gets to. He gets to helping Dinah. He gets back to helping the team. He sees that Felicity is compromised, and he calls her on it immediately. Before he gets back out on the field — which he does! — we'll see him kind of getting back to service, of being a help, which is in the best possible way I could say that… but the moral help, I should say. The moral compass. And the team needs it. When he comes back, the team needs it. Dinah needs it, and Felicity particularly needs it.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-david-ramsey-spartan-black-canary-dinah-drake-general-walker-russia-felicity-bratva-prometheus-interview/ GENERAL DC TV NEWS The JSA Returns In This Synopsis For LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Season 2 Episode 12: "Camelot/3000" (Date: 03 Feb 2017) ALL FOR ONE — The Legends continue their quest to hunt down the Spear of Destiny before the pieces fall into the hands of the Legion of Doom. And, no, your ears don't deceive you — that's Mark Hamill of “Star Wars” and “Batman: The Animated Series” fame providing the sweet, weedy vocals for the marshland's defender. The clip, from the show's upcoming “Zombie King” episode, shows Solomon Grundy getting ready to march on a nearby city, having raised an army of the undead. “Zombie King” airs on Cartoon Network on Saturday, February 4 at 7:30 AM. “Justice League Action” is a production of Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment starring Kevin Conroy, Rachel Kimsey and Jason J. Lewis. Variety reports Greg Berlanti's “Black Lightning” just received an official pilot order from the network. According to the report, The CW will stagger their superhero programming throughout the year to avoid scheduling five straight nights of supehero series. “I don't think so,” Berlanti said at the time. “If we're lucky enough that that exists, that that show exists, I don't think those worlds will cross over.” However, seeing as the pilot has just shifted from Fox to The CW, it's hard to rule anything out. The set photos depict not only Criss but also Keiynan Lonsdale as Kid Flash, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter and Carlos Valdes as Vibe. Titled “Duet,” the crossover will kick off March 20 with a lead-in on “Supergirl,” similar to how the setup for last fall's “Invasion!” was handled, and then continue on the March 21 episode of “The Flash.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/flash-supergirl-music-meister-set-photos/ To Celebrate The Release Of THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, DC TV Shows Get A LEGO Makeover (Date: 06 Feb 2017) The LEGO Batman Movie is receiving rave reviews, and it appears as if Warner Bros. is going all out this week to give it one final promotional push. That involves giving a LEGO makeover to many of their hit TV shows, and below you'll find Minifigure versions of characters from Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, and Supergirl. Disappointingly, the eclectic cast of Legends of Tomorrow hasn't been included here. Their meeting isn't so much epic as…well, confusing. That's because the gang learns that while Batman may be an unparalleled detective, he's apparently not the world's greatest speller. However, we didn't know that she would return in another future episode (or perhaps just stick around after the Grodd episode) and confront the god of speed. But thanks to some reworking of The CW's schedule, the finale episode will air the following Tuesday, April 4th. The most interesting thing about this is that Legends will air in The Flash's timeslot on April 4th, and will be followed by the third season premiere of iZombie. They call it Versus, where they pit one character against the other. But instead of something like Super Hero Beatdown where we see the actual fight, this is more giving the histories and strengths of the characters and letting the fans decide. For their first episode they've decided to pit the Emerald Archer versus the Scarlet Speedster. This indicates that Diamond expect a certain amount of returnability, but not that much. Well, it seems that DC Comics seems to have overdone it this time. They made the first six issues of all the DC Rebirth twice-monthly launch comics returnable, more than ever before. Ostensibly to allow retailers to find a ceiling limit on sales to customers, to not have to order conservatively, and to be confident in ordering big. Which has allowed certain titles that had slipped away in recent years, specifically Superman and Flash, to find an appreciative audience. However, there is a cost for that kind of thing. And while sales of DC Comics are also up, so is the returnability, at record high levels, and something DC and Diamond didn't anticipate. Which is why those pallet photos are meant to be quite a revelation. Could this be why the Diamond 2016 end-of-year statistics have been so delayed?
