In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing ROBOCOP (1987), from director Paul Verhoeven with a screenplay by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner.  In a city overrun by violent criminals, a newly transferred police officer, Alex Murphy (Peter Weller), is killed in the line of duty only to have his body transformed by a greedy and unscrupulous corporation into a cyborg enforcer of justice - RoboCop. This iconic 80s classic blends police drama with sci-fi elements, exploring themes of corporate greed, law enforcement, and humanity in a dystopian future. The film clocks in at 1 h and 42 m, is rated R and is currently streaming on Max but also to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.#RoboCop  #RoboCop1987  #PaulVerhoeven  #EdwardNeumeier  #MichaelMiner  #PeterWeller  #AlexMurphy  #RonnyCox  #DickJones  #NancyAllen  #AnneLewis  #MiguelFerrer  #BobMorton  #KurtwoodSMith  #ClarenceBoddicker  #RobertDoQui  SgtReed  #RayWise  #LeonNash  #FeltonPerry  #Johnson  #PaulMcCrane  #EmilAntonowsky  #CalvinJung  #SteveMinh  #JesseDGoins  #JoeCox  @streamonmax @PrimeVideo #FridayFamilyFilmNight --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jokagoge/support

fWotD Episode 2743: Starship Troopers (film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 7 November 2024 is Starship Troopers (film).Starship Troopers is a 1997 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier, based on the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein. Set in the 23rd century, the story follows teenager Johnny Rico and his comrades as they serve in the military of the United Citizen Federation, an Earth-based world government engaged in an interstellar war against an alien species known as the Arachnids. The film stars Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside.Development of Starship Troopers began in 1991 as Bug Hunt at Outpost 7, written by Neumeier. After recognizing similarities between Neumeier's script and Heinlein's book, producer Jon Davison suggested aligning the script more closely with the novel to garner greater interest from studio executives. Despite these efforts development was slow, with studios hesitant to fund the costly project right up to the start of filming. Principal photography took place between April and October 1996 on a $100–110 million budget, of which nearly half was spent on the extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI) and practical effects required to vivify the Arachnid creatures.Released on November 7, 1997, Starship Troopers faced critical backlash, with reviewers interpreting the film as endorsing fascism and disparaging its violence and cast performances. Despite initial box office success, collections slowed down amid negative reviews and unfavorable word of mouth, culminating in a $121 million total gross against its budget, which made it the 34th-highest-grossing film of 1997. The disappointing performance of Starship Troopers was blamed, in part, on competition from a high number of successful or anticipated science fiction and genre films released that year, its satire and violence failing to connect with mainstream audiences, and ineffective marketing.Since its release, Starship Troopers has been critically re-evaluated and is now considered a cult classic and a prescient satire of fascism and authoritarian governance that has grown in relevancy. The film launched a multimedia franchise that includes four sequels—Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004), Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008), Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012), and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017)—as well as a 1999 animated television series, video games, comics, and a variety of merchandise. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 15:06 UTC on Friday, 8 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Starship Troopers (film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2621: RoboCop Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 8 July 2024 is RoboCop.RoboCop is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. The film stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Daniel O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith, and Miguel Ferrer. Set in a crime-ridden Detroit in the near future, RoboCop centers on police officer Alex Murphy (Weller) who is murdered by a gang of criminals and revived by the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products as the cyborg law enforcer RoboCop. Unaware of his former life, RoboCop executes a campaign against crime while coming to terms with the lingering fragments of his humanity. The film was conceived by Neumeier while working on the set of Blade Runner (1982), and he developed the idea with Miner. Their script was purchased in early 1985 by producer Jon Davison on behalf of Orion Pictures. Finding a director proved difficult; Verhoeven dismissed the script twice because he did not understand its satirical content, until he was convinced of its value by his wife. Filming took place between August and October 1986, mainly in Dallas, Texas. Rob Bottin led the special-effects team in creating practical effects, violent gore and the RoboCop costume.Verhoeven emphasized violence throughout the film, making it so outlandish that it became comical. Censorship boards believed that it was too extreme, however, and several scenes were shortened or modified to receive an acceptable theatrical rating. RoboCop was a financial success upon its release in July 1987, earning $53.4 million. Reviewers praised it as a clever action film with deeper philosophical messages and satire, but were conflicted about its extreme violence. The film was nominated for several awards, and won an Academy Award and a number of Saturn Awards.RoboCop has been critically reevaluated since its release, and it has been hailed as one of the best films of the 1980s and one of the greatest science fiction and action films ever made. The film has been praised for its depiction of a robot affected by the loss of humanity, in contrast to the stoic and emotionless robotic characters of that era. RoboCop has continued to be analyzed for its themes such as the nature of humanity, personal identity, corporate greed and corruption, and is seen as a rebuke of the era's Reaganomics policies. Its success created a franchise: the sequels RoboCop 2 (1990) and RoboCop 3 (1993), children's animated series, live-action television shows, video games, comic books, toys, clothing and other merchandise. A remake was released in 2014.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:28 UTC on Monday, 8 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see RoboCop on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

Best Pick with John Dorney, Jessica Regan and Tom Salinsky Episode 229: RoboCop Released 21 September 2022 For this episode, we watched class eighties action flick RoboCop, but despite the trashy title this is film which hides a great deal of cleverness and even heart under its brutality, bloodletting and general excess. The script was by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, and it was the first American film for Dutch director Paul Verhoeven. It cost about $14 million to make, it took over $50 million at the box office and it picked up two competitive Oscar nominations and a special award for its sound. https://lithub.com/on-hilary-mantels-birthday-please-enjoy-her-1988-review-of-robocop/ Buckaroo Banzai https://youtu.be/RdanCNK4ayo Turkish Delight https://youtu.be/tK1wZt6MzI8 Robocop cartoon https://youtu.be/Yp4Sqn0eX_Q “John Murphy” https://youtu.be/lZd2YyuRaug?t=132 Smooth animation https://youtu.be/8ln11zEWW4U Militarised police https://youtu.be/WYdi1bL6s10?t=392 BEST PICK – the book is out now from all the usual places, including… From the publisher https://tinyurl.com/best-pick-book-rowman UK Amazon https://amzn.to/3zFNATI US Amazon https://www.amzn.com/1538163101 UK bookstore https://www.waterstones.com/book/9781538163108 US bookstore https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/best-pick-john-dorney/1139956434 Audio book https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Best-Pick-Audiobook/B09SBMX1V4 To send in your questions, comments, thoughts and ideas, you can join our Facebook group, Tweet us on @bestpickpod or email us on bestpickpod@gmail.com. The 1987 classic RoboCop would be best described as a science fiction action film - but could be seen by many as a glimpse into a heavily privatised corporate run world. Director Paul Verhoeven takes the Edward Neumeier screenplay and places Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Daniel O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith, and Miguel Ferrer in to make for a cracking great show. With Rachel in absentia, this week Val and Special Guest Aaron Lange discuss the pilot episode of RoboCop, a 1994 Canadian cyberpunk television series based on the RoboCop franshise. Twenty-two episodes were made, but the series was not renewed for a second season. The pilot episode runs two hours and was adapted from a discarded RoboCop 2 script, Corporate Wars, by the writers of the original RoboCop, Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. Made to appeal primarily to children and young teenagers, the television series ignores the events of the sequels and many character names are changed from the movie series. Hot topics include: 1.) RoboCops, Ghost Cops, and Vampire Cops 2.) The enduring entertainment value of 1980s techno-fascism! 3.) Cyberpunk vs. Splatter Punks 4.) Aaron's love/hate relationship with James Cameron 5.) Our next installment of MAYbe It's Horror is Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece: Robocop. Verhoeven had passed on this project until the intervention of his wife and Barbara Boyle encouraged him to look past a seemingly silly title. After reading the script, then dozens of Judge Dredd comics, Verhoeven dove into the film so deeply that he even ended up making a cameo (in the night club). On this episode, we feature director and friend, Price James, who will shamelessly admit this is his favorite film. Follow him on Instagram @fisherpricejames to see his upcoming projects, including a Barbie version of his Action Man: Battlefield Casualties ad. During our discussion, we talk about everything from Robocop's photo opportunity with Rudy Guliani (which sadly took place with the Boy Scouts and not in front of a landscaping business) to literary references in the film. If you know Jake, his obsession with Robocop is nearly as old as his fascination with dinosaurs. Well guess what? He even crowbars in a reference to Robocop: The Future of Law Enforcement issue 7 from Marvel, which published in 1990, depicting our favorite chrome-clad cop fighting cloned dinosaurs. The music was by Basil Poledouris. We discuss the nature of his work and how its satirical style almost becomes a character in this film and that of Starship Troopers, which Verhoeven also directed. Also, side note, did you know he did the music for Hot Shots! Part Deux? Stop-motion animation was done by Academy Award Winning effects designer, Phil Tippett. The actors were truly remarkable. Peter Weller plays Alex James Murphy, who is by no means an everyman, rather a what every man aspires to be. His foil, is Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Boddicker. He embodies slime and scum and everything you love to hate on celluloid. Nancy Allen, who many remember from her role in Carrie, is Anne Lewis, a tough, but tremendously lovable cop. Ronny Cox plays Dick Jones, who is just a nasty person. Imagine rubbing your poop hands in someone's hair after the horrors of 2020?! Last there is Miguel Ferrer as Bob Morton, the guy who gets the poop in the hair! Do you want to know how Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner conceived of the film? Details on filing in Texas? Budget? Costuming? Mime coaches?! Well, get in the car, because I usually drive when I'm breaking in a new partner. Oh, and as a lil extra sizzle for each of those seemingly rhetorical questions: on the set of Blade Runner, it was over budget and over 100 degrees, Rob Bottin designed it but was feuding with Verhoeven so badly that he stopped coming to set, and Juliard professor of movement, Moni Yakim (who just had a new documentary published about him: Creating a Character: The Moni Yakim Legacy). 80's Flick Flashback
#13 - “RoboCop” (1987) with Ron West

80's Flick Flashback

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 18, 2020 52:36

In 1987, a new kind of gritty, ultra-violent sci-fi action movie was born, but it came with nods to comic book heroes, and classic spaghetti westerns. Helmed by a little known Dutch director with a penchant for violence and nudity and starring a method actor better known for his work in the theater than in film, on paper it must have seemed like a pretty risky prospect to the studio bosses over at Orion Pictures. It proved to be anything but, with Paul Verhoeven's provocative directorial style meshing with a clever script by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, "RoboCop" fused fast-paced sci-fi action with biting satire to create a film that ranks among the decade's best, even if it doesn’t hold up as well today as we had hoped. On this episode, Tim Williams and guest co-host, Ron West, share their memories of this iconic 80's classic! Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: Peter Weller hired Moni Yakim, the head of the Movement Department at Juilliard, to help create an appropriate way for him to move his body while wearing the RoboCop suit. He and Moni had envisioned RoboCop moving like a snake, dancing around its targets very elusively. The suit, however, proved to be too heavy and cumbersome. Instead, at the suggestion of Moni, it was decided that they would slow down RoboCop's movements in order to make them more appealing and plausible. Filming stopped for three days, allowing Peter and Paul Verhoeven to discuss new movements for the suit. The original gun for RoboCop was a Desert Eagle, but this was deemed too small. A Beretta 93R was heavily modified by Ray Williams of Freshour Machine, Texas City, Texas, who extended the gun barrel to make it look bigger and more proportional to RoboCop's hand. The gun holster itself was a standalone piece that was not integrated into the suit. Off-screen technicians would operate the device on cue by pulling cables that would force the holster to open up and allow the gun to be placed inside. Verhoeven originally wanted to make significant changes to the Neumeier and Miner’s second, more polished version of the RoboCop screenplay in order to give the story more realism. The most contentious of these changes would have seen Murphy embroiled in an extramarital affair with his partner Ann Lewis, prior to his near-execution at the hands of Boddicker and his crew. Given a deadline of just two months to make the changes Verhoeven wanted, Neumeier sent Verhoeven a stack of American comic books so the director could get a clearer idea of what they had been aiming for with their script. The scene in which ED-209 malfunctions and ends up killing OCP junior executive Mr. Kinney was actually inspired by a fantasy Neumeier had during his days as a young executive in Hollywood. Neumeier sat through many a soul-crushing meeting during his time in the movie business, and would often daydream about the idea of a robot bursting into the room and killing everyone. Robocop features the incredible Peter Weller (who has since earned a Ph.D. at UCLA, in Italian Renaissance art history) as the eponymous cyborg crime-fighting machine. Detroit was once a Midwestern economic powerhouse but went into precipitous decline and became crime-ridden (it's yet to recover). Whether you blame Reagonomics or the endless succession of Democrat mayors since the 1960s, "the D" is a shell of its former self. What it is though, is perfect fodder for sci fi action films. And Robocop beautifully showcases a city in decline in this movie classic. We love Detroit though; and we love Robocop. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, RoboCop was written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. Alongside Peter Weller, there's Nancy Allen, Dan O'Herlihy, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer, and Ronny Cox. That's pretty much a genre movie all star team right there. Ferrer was in Traffic, and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. And Cox starred in that stone-cold all-American classic, Deliverance. Set in the near future, RoboCop centers on police officer Alex Murphy (Weller) who is brutally murdered by a gang of criminals. Really, how other way can you be murdered but brutally? He is subsequently revived by the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products (OCP) as a superhuman cyborg law enforcer, from which the movie gets its name. Themes that make up the film include include media influence, gentrification, corruption, authoritarianism, greed, privatization, capitalism, identity, dystopia, and human nature. It received solid reviews and was cited as one of the best films of 1987, spawning a franchise that included merchandise, two sequels, a television series, a remake, two animated TV series, a television mini-series, video games, and a number of comic book adaptations/crossovers.
