We're back! After our Guillermo Del Toro mini-series we're returning with the polar opposite of GDT's hopeful, community-driven cinema -- we're going sleazy, conspiratorial, and cynical (but still anti-American)! It's time for Brian De Palma's 1981 thriller, BLOW OUT!It's our first time talking De Palma, so we're breaking down his general cinematic approach and style before diving into where exactly BLOW OUT came from, and the power of a downer ending. It'd be impossible not to delve into voyeurism, Hitchcock, John Travolta's singing career, Nancy Allen & De Palma's marriage, and our complicated feelings on John "Mr Entertainment" Lithgow. Plus we're here to answer the age old question: is there a better cinematic setup scene than putting John Travolta on a bridge with an owl?Next time: back to Hong Kong for Johnnie To's gonzo superhero antics in THE HEROIC TRIO (1993)

They're all gonna laugh at you. TOTAL MASSACRE starts its foray into the teen girl high school social satire canon with CARRIE, a film that may not be satire, but it's very concerned with many of the same things, as Rowan argues, and is a tremendous influential film and story overall, as special guest Zack Handlen argues. Does first-time viewer Christy Admiraal agree? What is the difference between comedy and horror in the end? Why are CARRIE adaptations so keen to make Carrie so skinny? How awful is Nancy Allen, and how not-threatening is John Travolta? And why is Rowan so attracted to Piper Laurie in this anyway???

For one last time in 2024, we're closing out DePalmber: Part De by opening the vault door and welcoming another of our beloved classics into the podcast canon, this time a bleak noir thriller about a foley artist in the film industry who winds up recording proof of a political murder conspiracy while out grabbing sounds for a new low-end horror picture, and gets swept up into a dark world of intrigue where no one is safe. It's 1981's Blow Out, written and directed by Brian De Palma and starring John Travolta, Nancy Allen, Jon Lithgow, Dennis Franz, Peter Boyden, John Aquino and Deborah Everton. Like Michael Mann's Thief (released just four months earlier), it feels like a visionary director establishing countless trademark flourishes in an early outing before really hitting their stride as the decade continued. And just like Thief, that early outing may prove to be a high-water mark neither man ever cleared again. Plus: without any theatrical outing to report on to end the year, we're vibing out with hoarfrost and the music of Waxahatchee. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to this conversation, and we loved this movie so we strongly recommend you do, Blow Out is currently streaming for free on Tubi (at least in Canada) at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Nosferatu, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Abigail, The Brutalist, The Order, Blue Chips, Air, Hustle, Hoosiers, Moneyball, Glory Road, Miracle, The Way Back, The Holdovers, Knives Out, Glass Onion, Law Abiding Citizen, I Saw the TV Glow, Monkey Man, Biggest Heist Ever, Joker: Folie à Deux, A Christmas Story, Black Christmas, Baby Geniuses, The Karate Dog, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, To Grandmother's House We Go, New York Minute, Scarface, Body Double, Pulp Fiction, Gotti, The Fanatic, Dexter, Conclave, Cliffhanger, Nightcrawler, and Nope among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off 2025 with the Bernie Mac baseball comedy Mr. 3000, to celebrate J Mo crossing the 3000 films watched lifetime milestone at some point in the year that was 2024. That's as good a reason to watch it as any I suppose, and you can find Mr. 3000 streaming for free on Hoopla at the moment. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

MERRY SHAQMAS, EVERYONE! We hit pause on DePalmber: Part De this week and pick up our annual Christmas tradition of exploring the filmography of basketball player / actor Shaquille O'Neal, here making his acting debut in a Nick Nolte-helmed character drama loosely based on notorious college coach Bobby Knight. It's 1994's Blue Chips, directed by William Friedkin, and starring Nolte, Shaq, Mary McDonnell, Ed O'Neill, J.T. Walsh, Alfre Woodard, Penny Hardaway, Anthony C. Hall and Bobby Knight. This was Friedkin's return to the fold after 20 years of banishment at Paramount, following a serious falling out with the studio during the production of (previous episode fodder) Sorcerer, and while the movie is far more of a one-for-us more so than a one-for-you, the prolific director still brings so much more life to the sports drama genre than this sort of thing is typically infused with. Plus, contrary to what we were led to believe from watching Steel last year, Shaq actually can act, and shows star-quality comedy chops and an earnest vulnerability that he would snuff out in later years while leaning into cartoon shtick. Sadly, Blue Chips is not available to stream on Paramount+, or anywhere for that matter, but can be rented for about $5 on YouTube. And it's worth checking out! Other works discussed on this episode include The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Kraven The Hunter, The Producers (2005), The Producers (1967), Young Frankenstein, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Scrooged, Office Christmas Party, It's In the Game: Madden NFL, Ready or Not, Bad Boys: Ride of Die, V/H/S, Hustle and Civil War. We'll be back next week to close out 2024 with our DePalmber: Part De canon consideration, as we put De Palma's 1981 show biz crime thriller under the microscope and finally dedicate an entire episode to John Travolta and Nancy Allen in Blow Out! Blow Out is currently streaming for free (in Canada at least) on the people's streamer, Tubi. Until then, we'll see you at the movies, and a happy Shaqmas to all!!

With the 2024 presidential election looming, we thought it'd be timely to jump down the conspiratorial rabbit-hole with Brian De Palma's 1981 political thriller 'Blow Out'. This film follows slasher b-movie sound specialist Jack Terri, who witnesses a car accident that kills a prolific politician. Using his audio expertise, he begins to uncover that this accident might've been an assassination. However, his independent investigation gets him wrapped up in something much more dangerous than he could have imagined. The film delves into elements of thrillers, horror-satire, and pulpy soap-opera melodrama, Director: Brian De Palma Starring: John Trevolta, Nancy Allen, John Lithgow For this episode we're drinking Woodford Reserve whisky.

My crush on William Katt began decades ago with the tumbling blonde spirals of Tommy Ross in Carrie, the close-cropped Sundance, to the shorter golden curls of Pippin… it wasn't just the hair, of course… that face, the smile, his voice… the whole damn package. Like millions of other baby boomers, he had us swooning for years. How lovely to sit down with Bill, these almost 50 years later, to discover he's still got that boyhood charm, mischievous sense of fun, with just a teeny touch of bad boy (note him playfully admonishing his wife when she sneaks into the “set.” And, the au courant platinum do, and facial hair he's currently sporting still make him a handsome standout. That's the trivial superficialities - but, what do you expect when you're talking about a movie star heartthrob? Well, there is the laid-back, easy-going, real as-beans, straight-shooter, who was crazy fun to chat with and get his inside perspective on his parents, actors, Bill Williams (Kit Carson) and Barbara Hale - loved to learn that she was also funny- Betty White funny, and inspired at least one woman to great professional heights, on Angie Dickenson, his first TV co-star, his passion for theatre, always, working with Bob Fosse, and Ben Vereen, Auditioning for George Lucas, to play Luke Skywalker with Kurt Russell as Hans Solo - doing a great job, instead being cast by Brian DePalma in his seminal work, Carrie, alongside his friend, and perhaps for a brief moment something more, Amy Irving, visited on the set by Steven Spielberg, perhaps where that all began, alongside beloved Nancy Allen (who is responsible for connecting me with Bill, making this conversation possible), John Travolta, Betty Buckley, Piper Laurie, Cissy Spacek-some great stories there, we talked about The Greatest American Hero, and the risk back then of going from film to TV, working with Robert Culp, and Connie Selleca, House, and George Wendt, great Sci-Fi with The Man From Earth, why he no longer does theatre, does only good films for friends, like last years' Pursuit with John Cusack and an upcoming film with Alfred Molina. We talked about music throughout his life, bands in high school, playing clubs later on, a pop hit, lots of musical theatre culminating with Pippin and Fosse, and a musical about and working with, Randy Newman, which his love for came out his pores when describing, to his current passion Jazz project. William Katt is a Renaissance man. We already know he looks great in tights. What FUN!!!! Jump back 40 years to a classic time travel movie with The Philadelphia Experiment. Jay and Shua reminisce and compare it to another 80s flick on Enjoy Stuff    Time skip back and forth through time with experiments connecting us to World War II. The Philadelphia Experiment takes us forward and The Final Countdown takes us back.    News We break down some of the biggest D23 News with plenty to excite everyone Pop-Tarts releases the biggest pastry EVER! Saturday Night is a new film that tells the story of the first broadcast of SNL What do you think of the extremely sweet new treat at an Arizona stadium Start planning great holiday gifts now with the Muppet version of Clue There's a new horror documentary series from Shudder Best of luck to all the Paramount Television Studios employees that lost their job in the shutdown Ready for some pumpkin spice? 7-11 has you covered   Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay was reminded of a Michael Keaton movie from earlier this year called Knox Goes Away. It starts off as a movie about an assassin who is looking to get out of the business. But it quickly turns unique when you find out that Keaton's character has a quickly worsening form of dementia. You can check it out on Apple TV+ or Max. Shua grabbed an old Sci-Fi paperback from his shelf called Earthship and Starsong by Ethan I. Shedley. It never made it into the annals of sci-fi legends, but it is an interesting tale of humans' quest (and selfishness) for survival in the universe. Unfortunately we made enemies of everyone else in the universe. You can find this book on Amazon and other online sources.    Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay has reminded us of a 2006 Hugh Jackman movie called The Fountain. This unique movie tells a similar tale about a doomed couple from different time periods of history, which spans thousands of years. Check out all of Jay's articles on Sci-Fi Saturdays, only on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Agents of SHIELD season 3. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.     Enjoy Movies!  40 years ago, a movie was released that was based on a possibly true story from 40 years before. Michael Pare and Nancy Allen star in the Philadelphia Experiment. Pare and Bobby DiCicco's characters get flung forward in time to 1984 following a failed Navy experiment in World War II. Their problems weren't over because they were still connected to the bizarre vortex that sent them there, causing painful outbreaks of electricity. Plus, the scientist who caused the accident, did it again with a whole town. Now Pare has to get back to stop it.    The movie is often compared to another WWII time travel movie called The Final Countdown. In that movie, the time travel happens in reverse, sending the USS Nimitz back to 1941 just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Which movie did it better? We compare them and explain which one we like the best.    Don't forget to check out Jay's SciFi Saturdays articles on The Philadelphia Experiment and  The Final Countdown   Which movie did you like better? Would you rather go forward in time or back? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Philadelphia Freedom” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

How can you not sit down with a couple of 80's heavy hitters for our month's dystopian theme “SOME BULLSHIT TOMORROW”? Especially the one we're discussing in this episode. This privatized authoritarian world of technocratic mediocrity might hit closer to home than any future film we're discussing all month. The near future setting of Old Detroit is extremely violent and absurd. There are no deep solutions. Only increased repression by corporate funded police. Barely anything works so if you don't die by getting shot 30 times then you'll probably go out in a much dumber way when your technology shits the bed. Paul Verhoeven sets up his reputation nicely with his ultra-violent, ultra-satirical 1987 sci-fi film “ROBOCOP” starring Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith and more. Officer Murphy meets his end and is reborn into a 24 hour policing cyborg. His natural training is essential but his memories of his old life are harder to deprogram. Robocop became an eighties cultural icon who once save the Pro Wrestler Sting from a cage after the four horseman tased him and locked him up. Unlike his mechanical contemporaries, Robocop stood the test of time. Robocop is really the only functional thing in this movie. Beautiful, elegant, strong—when Sarah Huckabee Sanders glided out on stage on Night 2 of the Republican National Convention, I could not help but think of the film Carrie. In it, the shy wallflower emerges as the beautiful prom queen moments before she's sabotaged by two mean and bitter people who want nothing but her total humiliation. But of course, they don't realize what they just stepped in as Carrie turns to them, flips the switch that turns on her supernatural powers, and enacts her revenge. It's one of the best scenes in film history made when Hollywood could still make great movies, and Stephen King wrote great books rather than endless anti-Trump tweets.Sarah Huckabee Sanders didn't need to set the place on fire. Her success is her best revenge, as she's now the Governor of Arkansas, the first woman to hold that position. Take that, bitter leftists. What a moment that was. They did everything in their power to crush her, to humiliate her, to shame her, to destroy her. And guess what? It failed spectacularly, just as it has with Trump.I remember back in 2018 when Michelle Wolf told unfunny jokes, selling a version of Sanders that doesn't, in fact, exist. Her words stung, and Sanders' reactions reflected that. Even though I was a loyal Democrat back then, I loudly criticized Wolf and my Democrat friends for defending her.And when she was refused service at the Red Hen, a thing that happened in the Jim Crow South or Nazi Germany, Stephen Colbert did his usual sociopathic ranting disguised as humor.I always thought we were the guys, I said. Are we the side that now mocks the way women look? Oh, she's supporting Trump; they told me back then. She is normalizing a fascist. She deserves what she gets.It was blatant hypocrisy from the side that proclaims tolerance and love. But there they were, as mean as Nancy Allen in Carrie. That's who you are now, I told them. You're the mean girls. It was verbal abuse disguised as comedy, but it still wasn't enough. Look at how far they had to go in an attempt to destroy her, destroy Trump, and defeat the grassroots movement known as MAGA.Maybe that assassin wasn't killing Trump because he thought he was Hitler. But did it matter that much? It seemed to manifest their collective hatred, with nowhere to go except pulling the trigger. Too bad you missed means two different things, depending on which side you're on.If you can imagine, we're at the moment where people on Twitter are arguing over whether it's cancel culture to fire someone who said they were upset that Trump was almost assassinated but happy that one of his supporters died. For the record, no, I don't support firing some dumb woman who works at Home Depot because she wrote a disgusting Facebook post. But I also would not want someone with a dark heart like that working for me.We should never let them off the hook for who they were and what they did, especially to people like Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who did nothing to deserve it except work for Donald Trump.I heard her tell the same story about Trump she recounted at the RNC on a podcast a few years ago—I don't remember which one—and it humanized Trump in my eyes. It made me think differently about him, and I understood their relationship better. For Sanders, Trump is a ride-or-die, as she explains here. That wasn't the only bright spot of the night, but it was the most remarkable. Nothing has ever felt as satisfying as watching her living her hot girl summer phase - an invisible EFF YOU to the haters. It was a night for powerhouse mama bears who have lost their loved ones either to high crime or the fentanyl epidemic, something the Democrats seem to care nothing about. Oh, those people in the red states, they don't matter, the racists.Like Madeline Brame, who blew the roof off the joint and earned the rare standing ovation from Trump. And Sara Workman:And Anne Funder:Real people, real problems. Your move, Democrats.// This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit sashastone.substack.com/subscribe

Send us a Text Message. On this 85th episode of Fabulous Film and Friends we are going to connect the dots between three seminal cautionary tales from the 80's: 1984's Repo Man directed by Alex Cox and starring Emelio Estevez, Harry Dean Stanton, Olivia Barash, Jennifer Balgobin, Dick Rude, Tracey Walter, Sy Richardson, Vonetta McGee, Richard Foronjy, Tom Finnegan, Eddie Velez, Del Zamora, Zander Schloss, Fox Harris and Jimmy Buffet. Then 1987's River's Edge directed by Tim Hunter starring Keanu Reeves, Crispin Clover, Ione Skye, Daniel Roebuck, Joshua John Miller, Josh Richman, Roxana Zal, Jim Metzler, Tom Bower and Dennis Hopper and topped off with Robocop, also from 1987 and starring Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer, Paul McCrane, Ray Wise, Jesse D. Goins, Felton Perry, Del Zamora, Dan O'Herlihy and the inimitable Ronny Cox.  I'm Gino Caputi and returning to the program to break down all this cynicism and disaffected young adulthood are my sister Roseanne, the lit major, Joe Field, the author/hypnotist and back again after a long fitful stint in suspended animation, the photobug and funny man Gordon Alex Robertson!Okay before we suit up and start taking names, the synopses: In Repo Man, Otto, an LA punk, gets fired from his job as a grocery clerk but finds his true calling when a tough-talking stranger named Bud convinces Otto to join his team of auto repossession agents. Bud, Otto and the entire network of the repo men run into an existential crisis when a mysterious car that has a reward of 20k is believed to have an alien in its trunk.  River's Edge is loosely based on true events and catalogues a turmoil of emotions or lack thereof that a group of teens encounter when they discover one of their friends, John aka Samson, has murdered his girlfriend while another friend, Layne, swears them all to secrecy.  Robocop looks into the future where the Detroit police are privately owned by a corporation called Omni Consumer Product. After Alex Murphy a brave but naive officer is killed in the line of duty by a ruthless crime lord named Clarence Boddiker, Murphy's body is given to OCP for a pilot program that transforms Murphy into a cyborg called Robocop. The program seems to work and Robocop starts cleaning the streets until he realizes all is not right in his programming and there are sinister forces that led to his creation, including a pact between OCP VP Dick Jones and Boddiker's gang.    Follow the FFF Facebook page!https://www.facebook.com/groups/fabulousfilmandfriends Watch the episode on Youtube:https://youtu.be/l7IVqxqb1hw
