Dead or alive, you're coming with me! This week, we head to the crime-ridden dystopia of Detroit where corporations rule, criminals laugh like maniacs, and the solution to urban decay is… a heavily armed cyborg cop with excellent posture. Join Nic, Matthew, Keiko, Nur, and Alex as they revisit RoboCop (1987), Paul Verhoeven's ultraviolent, razor-sharp satire that somehow convinced an entire generation of kids that this was appropriate viewing. We're asking the important questions: Is this actually one of the smartest sci-fi films ever made… or just an excuse for explosive squibs and corporate slimeballs? Why did we all think ED-209 was just a normal workplace hazard? Does RoboCop count as a superhero, a horror monster, or the world's saddest HR case study? And how did this movie spawn toys, cartoons, and birthday parties? Along the way, we break down the film's biting commentary on privatization, media culture, and late-stage capitalism—while also appreciating just how completely unhinged it gets. It's part Blade Runner, part Die Hard, and part “what if the evening news was written by lunatics?” Does RoboCop (1987) hold up as a masterpiece of satire, or were our childhood brains just too distracted by explosions to notice the deeper themes? Dead or alive, you're listening to this episode. Want to pick a movie we do an episode on and record a special commentary just for you? Purchase something from our wish list! We are riffers on Cineprov! Check us out!! How will RoboCop (1987) hold up? Robocop 3 (1993)Directed by Fred DekkerStarring: Robert John Burke, Nancy Allen, Rip Torn, Bradley WhitfordThey PG-13'd a franchise built on ultraviolence, gave Robocop a jetpack, and somehow thought a ninja robot was the answer. Welcome to Robocop 3.This is the movie that killed Fred Dekker's career, broke Frank Miller's spirit, and somehow still made money. John and Sean strap in for one of the most gloriously misguided entries in the history of cult classics — a kids' movie with a body count, a legacy character dispatched in the laziest standoff ever committed to film, and a half-man, half-robot hero who shows up 20 minutes late to his own movie. In this episode, we discuss:The Great Downgrade — Peter Weller's out, Robert John Burke is crammed into a suit that doesn't fit, and the result is exactly as uncomfortable as it sounds. We debate who's really at fault: the actor, the suit, or the whole cursed production.PG-13: The Franchise Killer — How stripping Robocop of everything that made him terrifying, visceral, and satirically brilliant in favor of toy-friendly family entertainment is the original sin this movie never recovers from.Too Many Factions, Zero Payoff — Splatter punks, Rehab mercenaries, a Japanese corporate ninja, a child hacker, the resistance, the cops — this movie stuffs more into a paper bag than the bag can hold, and then the bag explodes. The Jetpack Scene — No further comment necessary. You'll know it when you see it. It looks exactly as bad as you're imagining. We Also Talked About:Remake, Remix, Rip-Off (Youtube) (2014, dir. Cem Kaya) — A documentary on Turkish pop cinema where three screenwriters ran an entire film industry, stunt safety was a suggestion, and they painted the film stock purple when they ran out of color.Neighbors - Episode 6 - "Yellow Thong Bikini" (Amazon) - Sean wraps up his coverage of the series with episode 6, "Yellow Thong Bikini" — the one he definitely couldn't watch with his kid. A 70-something man exercises around his California neighborhood in nothing but a yellow thong bikini, gets run out of town by disapproving neighbors, relocates to a Florida nudist colony, and somehow ends up entangled with a college student making hip-hop videos. It's exactly what it sounds like, and Sean recommends it with very specific caveats.Psycho Ape (Youtube) (2020) — John's new obsession: a Nike-wearing killer gorilla loose in Detroit, shot on a home camera. Also available via Found Footage Fest on Kindie.tv.High School U.S.A. (Youtube) (1983) — A made-for-TV fever dream starring Michael J. Fox, Crispin Glover, Anthony Edwards, and Todd Bridges.Mallrats (Youtube)(1995, dir. Kevin Smith) — John revisits Kevin Smith and remembers a better time. The specter of an upcoming Kevin Smith episode looms large.Anaconda (Amazon)(2025, dir. Possibly the least subtle shot in movie history involving an American flag! A sleep-deprived John Travolta using analog sound tech to play Sound Detective while wearing fingerless Sound Gloves! All that and more in this stylish thriller that also features a murderable Nancy Allen, an evil John Lithgow, and Dennis Franz as a creepy slob! Welcome back to Shoot the Hostage! We are three episodes deep into Dan's Identity season, and things are getting… well, icky. This week, we're tackling Brian De Palma's 1980 classic/controversy magnet, Dressed to Kill. Retroactively functioning as a best of De Palma, this film features many of the hallmarks you would expect from the director – voyeurism, shower scenes, and enough split diopter shots to make you feel like your eyeballs are watching separate movies. Join us as we unpack this 80s slasher-adjacent thriller. We discuss why Nancy Allen deserved better than a Razzy nomination, and how Angie Dickinson proves that being nearly 50 is the new 21. We also dive into the character identities and why the twist is about as subtle as a brick to the face. Plus, we explore why watching movies on Tubi means being interrupted by Danica Patrick trying to sell us car insurance. What to expect from this episode: Why Brian De Palma is basically a giant pervert with a very expensive camera. Dan's “bonfire of opinions” regarding the 10-minute dialogue-free art gallery scene. A breakdown of why a binary calculator that only holds 20 numbers is the worst invention ever. Sarah's internal struggle between Michael Caine being a “Tory” and being a “Great.” A dive into 80s slasher tropes and why this is basically Psycho with more pubic hair. The mystery of whose leg is on the movie poster. A completely unsolicited but necessary tangent about Andrew MacCarthy and the movie Mannequin. Our attempts to sensitively navigate this films “Wild West” approach to transgender representation. Why Nancy Allen kicking a bloke in the balls is the peak of her filmography. Frank TreeJohn Candy, Treat Williams, Nancy Allen, Robert Stack, Christopher Lee, Toshirō Mifune e muitos outros nomes que dão vida a personagens caricatos e inesquecíveis.

Strategic Workforce Planning (SWP) is no longer about spreadsheets and headcount forecasts. It's about driving real business change. In this episode of the People Agenda podcast, host Chris Howard is joined by some of our people analytics team; Nancy Allen, Jo Clarke de Dromantin and Julian Holmes as they reflect on the SWP Conference London. During the conference it was acknowledged how SWP had shifted from cost control to business transformation. Today, SWP exists to tackle real business challenges including productivity, growth, skills shortages, and AI adoption, rather than simply managing numbers or budgets. SWP needs to account for all forms of work. That means looking beyond full-time employees to include contractors and contingent labour, as well as bots, automation systems, and AI agents. Workforce planning is evolving into workforce plus automation planning, reflecting how work is truly delivered today.

Join us as we celebrate the 35th anniversary of “RoboCop 2,” a divisive but fan-favorite entry of this franchise. We explore the collaboration that brought the film to life: director Irvin Kershner steering a dystopian future, with Frank Miller's lending his original takes to shape the story that were deemed “unfilmable” by Orion Pictures, which led to Walon Green being brought in to re-write it. We'll revisit the key performances that defined the film: Peter Weller returning as the relentless RoboCop, Nancy Allen's tough, street-smart officer, and Dan O'Herlihy lending his veteran gravitas. Belinda Bauer, Tom Noonan, and Gabriel Damon contribute to the film's unsettling spectrum of villainous characters, pushing the city's decay and corporate corruption to the edge. This episode examines the film's ambition, its controversial moments, and how “RoboCop 2” fits into the legacy of a franchise that blurred the line between law, humanity, and machine. Tune in for production anecdotes, thematic analysis, and a look back at a cult classic that continues to spark conversations about justice, technology, and what it means to be human in a world gone corporate.Where To Watch RoboCop 2

Send us a textRemember when action movies had substance? RoboCop wasn't just an explosive sci-fi flick about a cyborg cop—it was a prescient vision of our future.Watching Paul Verhoeven's 1987 masterpiece today feels eerily prophetic. Long before our current concerns about facial recognition technology, corporate control of public services, and media desensitization to violence, RoboCop was laying it all out with remarkable accuracy. What makes this film truly special is how it balances biting social satire with genuinely thrilling action sequences that still hold up decades later. The practical effects deserve special mention—from the horrific toxic waste scene to Clarence Boddicker's spectacularly bloody demise, these moments remain seared into viewers' memories. Speaking of Boddicker, Kurtwood Smith's performance stands out as remarkably ahead of its time, feeling contemporary even by today's standards. Nancy Allen's portrayal of Officer Lewis also deserves recognition for avoiding the typical female action character tropes of the era—no forced romance, no unnecessary sexualization, just a competent cop who happens to be a woman. What truly elevates RoboCop is Verhoeven's outsider perspective as a Dutch director examining American culture. The film's commercial breaks and news segments might seem like quirky additions, but they build a rich dystopian world while delivering sharp commentary on media, consumerism, and violence. This film isn't just worth seeing—it's essential viewing that rewards multiple watches with new details and insights each time. Whether you're revisiting this classic or experiencing it for the first time, you'll understand why we both rated it 4.5/5 stars without hesitation. With a new legal thriller on the horizon, we're revisiting James Patterson's 2024 interview about #1 Lawyer. The bestselling author shares how he builds courtroom suspense and what makes a legal story truly gripping. —-- James Patterson has written bestsellers in many genres. But as he tells the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles in this episode of The Modern Law Library, he has always been fascinated by legal thrillers, courtroom dramas and crime novels. He even considered becoming a lawyer, before his literary career took off. In his newest release, The #1 Lawyer, James Patterson partnered with co-author Nancy Allen to tell the story of Stafford Lee Penney, a criminal defense attorney in Biloxi, Mississippi, who's never lost a case. But after handing a high-profile murder trial involving the son of a mobster, Penney finds himself on the other side of the bench as a defendant himself, charged with murdering his own wife. Patterson has written and co-written more than 300 books, including bestselling series like Alex Cross, Women's Murder Club and Maximum Ride. He had some writing tips for attorneys, particularly on how to work collaboratively. As Patterson tells listeners in the podcast, he is open about working with other writers on many of his books, and he finds tools like outlining absolutely essential. He also shares with Rawles how he thinks co-writers should handle interpersonal communication while working together. Patterson says one of the major benefits of working with co-authors is pulling from their experiences to make his books more accurate and true to life. When he wrote The President is Missing with Bill Clinton, the former president could tell Patterson the inside details of how a Secret Service detail worked. When he wrote Run, Rose, Run with Dolly Parton, she walked him through the production cycle for a song. Allen, who conducted more than 30 jury trials as a prosecutor in Missouri and taught law for 15 years at Missouri State University, contributed her firsthand courtroom experience to The #1 Lawyer. Patterson says they worked to make everything as accurate as possible—while still allowing for a good story. It's the pair's second book together, following a previous standalone novel, Juror #3. In this episode of The Modern Law Library, Patterson shares some of his favorite law-related pop culture picks; news about new and ongoing projects; and describes a very special birthday event with Dolly Parton. He also discusses how his children's series Maximum Ride got caught up in Florida book bans in 2023. For fans of Patterson's breakout success, the Alex Cross series launched in 1993 with Along Came a Spider, the author shares updates about what's next for the intrepid detective—including details about the upcoming Amazon Prime TV series Cross, starring Aldis Hodge.

We're back! After our Guillermo Del Toro mini-series we're returning with the polar opposite of GDT's hopeful, community-driven cinema -- we're going sleazy, conspiratorial, and cynical (but still anti-American)! It's time for Brian De Palma's 1981 thriller, BLOW OUT!It's our first time talking De Palma, so we're breaking down his general cinematic approach and style before diving into where exactly BLOW OUT came from, and the power of a downer ending. It'd be impossible not to delve into voyeurism, Hitchcock, John Travolta's singing career, Nancy Allen & De Palma's marriage, and our complicated feelings on John "Mr Entertainment" Lithgow. Plus we're here to answer the age old question: is there a better cinematic setup scene than putting John Travolta on a bridge with an owl?Next time: back to Hong Kong for Johnnie To's gonzo superhero antics in THE HEROIC TRIO (1993)
They're all gonna laugh at you! Jack and Corey are joined by the hilarious actor/comedian Anais Fairweather (DC Superhero Girls, Drunk History) to talk Brian De Palma's iconic adaptation of Stephen King's CARRIE (1976)! The three talk April Fools, pranks, pooping your pants, watching horror movies too young, Sissy Spacek's perfect performance, periods, BJs, bushes, John Travolta's first movie, Nancy Allen is the best bully, bad auditions, Gym class, showering at school, fire hoses, George Lucas, pig's blood, 70s sound, telekinesis, Amy Irving getting half of Stephen Spielberg's money, and olives.Support the pod by joining our Patreon at patreon.com/cinemapossessedpod and unlock the Cinema Possessed Bonus Materials, our bi-monthly bonus episodes where we talk about more than just what's in our collection! They're all gonna laugh at you. TOTAL MASSACRE starts its foray into the teen girl high school social satire canon with CARRIE, a film that may not be satire, but it's very concerned with many of the same things, as Rowan argues, and is a tremendous influential film and story overall, as special guest Zack Handlen argues. Does first-time viewer Christy Admiraal agree? What is the difference between comedy and horror in the end? Why are CARRIE adaptations so keen to make Carrie so skinny? How awful is Nancy Allen, and how not-threatening is John Travolta? And why is Rowan so attracted to Piper Laurie in this anyway???

Happy Halloween from Front Row Classics. Brandon welcomes back Emmett Stanton to take a look at Brian DePalma's Carrie. Based on Stephen King's novel, Carrie remains as effective as it was in 1976. It not only remains a horror classic but also an indictment of bullying. Brandon and Emmett praise the Oscar nominated performances of Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. We also highlight the performances of Betty Buckley, Nancy Allen, Amy Irving and John Travolta.

My crush on William Katt began decades ago with the tumbling blonde spirals of Tommy Ross in Carrie, the close-cropped Sundance, to the shorter golden curls of Pippin… it wasn't just the hair, of course… that face, the smile, his voice… the whole damn package. Like millions of other baby boomers, he had us swooning for years. How lovely to sit down with Bill, these almost 50 years later, to discover he's still got that boyhood charm, mischievous sense of fun, with just a teeny touch of bad boy (note him playfully admonishing his wife when she sneaks into the “set.” And, the au courant platinum do, and facial hair he's currently sporting still make him a handsome standout. That's the trivial superficialities - but, what do you expect when you're talking about a movie star heartthrob? Well, there is the laid-back, easy-going, real as-beans, straight-shooter, who was crazy fun to chat with and get his inside perspective on his parents, actors, Bill Williams (Kit Carson) and Barbara Hale - loved to learn that she was also funny- Betty White funny, and inspired at least one woman to great professional heights, on Angie Dickenson, his first TV co-star, his passion for theatre, always, working with Bob Fosse, and Ben Vereen, Auditioning for George Lucas, to play Luke Skywalker with Kurt Russell as Hans Solo - doing a great job, instead being cast by Brian DePalma in his seminal work, Carrie, alongside his friend, and perhaps for a brief moment something more, Amy Irving, visited on the set by Steven Spielberg, perhaps where that all began, alongside beloved Nancy Allen (who is responsible for connecting me with Bill, making this conversation possible), John Travolta, Betty Buckley, Piper Laurie, Cissy Spacek-some great stories there, we talked about The Greatest American Hero, and the risk back then of going from film to TV, working with Robert Culp, and Connie Selleca, House, and George Wendt, great Sci-Fi with The Man From Earth, why he no longer does theatre, does only good films for friends, like last years' Pursuit with John Cusack and an upcoming film with Alfred Molina. We talked about music throughout his life, bands in high school, playing clubs later on, a pop hit, lots of musical theatre culminating with Pippin and Fosse, and a musical about and working with, Randy Newman, which his love for came out his pores when describing, to his current passion Jazz project. William Katt is a Renaissance man. We already know he looks great in tights. What FUN!!!! Wiliam Katt Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Wednesday, 10/2/24, 5 pm PT, 8 pm ET Streamed Live on my Facebook Replay here: https://bit.ly/3Y9jGGa
It's the Brian DePalma homage(?) to "Blow Up".... it's 1981's "Blow Up" and Comedian Tony Dijamco is here to discuss it all. Is Depalma a thief or a genius? Is this better than Urban Cowboy? Is it spoofing B-Movies or owning it? Is this underrated? Is this the birth of Lithgow villians? All these questions and more get answered on this week's Mazan Movie Club Podcast. Jump back 40 years to a classic time travel movie with The Philadelphia Experiment. Jay and Shua reminisce and compare it to another 80s flick on Enjoy Stuff Time skip back and forth through time with experiments connecting us to World War II. The Philadelphia Experiment takes us forward and The Final Countdown takes us back. News We break down some of the biggest D23 News with plenty to excite everyone Pop-Tarts releases the biggest pastry EVER! Saturday Night is a new film that tells the story of the first broadcast of SNL What do you think of the extremely sweet new treat at an Arizona stadium Start planning great holiday gifts now with the Muppet version of Clue There's a new horror documentary series from Shudder Best of luck to all the Paramount Television Studios employees that lost their job in the shutdown Ready for some pumpkin spice? 7-11 has you covered Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay was reminded of a Michael Keaton movie from earlier this year called Knox Goes Away. It starts off as a movie about an assassin who is looking to get out of the business. But it quickly turns unique when you find out that Keaton's character has a quickly worsening form of dementia. You can check it out on Apple TV+ or Max. Shua grabbed an old Sci-Fi paperback from his shelf called Earthship and Starsong by Ethan I. Shedley. It never made it into the annals of sci-fi legends, but it is an interesting tale of humans' quest (and selfishness) for survival in the universe. Unfortunately we made enemies of everyone else in the universe. You can find this book on Amazon and other online sources. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay has reminded us of a 2006 Hugh Jackman movie called The Fountain. This unique movie tells a similar tale about a doomed couple from different time periods of history, which spans thousands of years. Check out all of Jay's articles on Sci-Fi Saturdays, only on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Agents of SHIELD season 3. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Movies! 40 years ago, a movie was released that was based on a possibly true story from 40 years before. Michael Pare and Nancy Allen star in the Philadelphia Experiment. Pare and Bobby DiCicco's characters get flung forward in time to 1984 following a failed Navy experiment in World War II. Their problems weren't over because they were still connected to the bizarre vortex that sent them there, causing painful outbreaks of electricity. Plus, the scientist who caused the accident, did it again with a whole town. Now Pare has to get back to stop it. The movie is often compared to another WWII time travel movie called The Final Countdown. In that movie, the time travel happens in reverse, sending the USS Nimitz back to 1941 just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Which movie did it better? We compare them and explain which one we like the best. Don't forget to check out Jay's SciFi Saturdays articles on The Philadelphia Experiment and The Final Countdown Which movie did you like better? Would you rather go forward in time or back? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Philadelphia Freedom” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. How can you not sit down with a couple of 80's heavy hitters for our month's dystopian theme “SOME BULLSHIT TOMORROW”? Especially the one we're discussing in this episode. This privatized authoritarian world of technocratic mediocrity might hit closer to home than any future film we're discussing all month. The near future setting of Old Detroit is extremely violent and absurd. There are no deep solutions. Only increased repression by corporate funded police. Barely anything works so if you don't die by getting shot 30 times then you'll probably go out in a much dumber way when your technology shits the bed. Paul Verhoeven sets up his reputation nicely with his ultra-violent, ultra-satirical 1987 sci-fi film “ROBOCOP” starring Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith and more. Officer Murphy meets his end and is reborn into a 24 hour policing cyborg. His natural training is essential but his memories of his old life are harder to deprogram. Robocop became an eighties cultural icon who once save the Pro Wrestler Sting from a cage after the four horseman tased him and locked him up. Unlike his mechanical contemporaries, Robocop stood the test of time. Robocop is really the only functional thing in this movie. Jim reflects on a 1983 Sci-Fi homage to old 50s films which initially did not do well, but found an audience in Home Video and a nice cult following - "Strange Invaders," starring Paul Le Mat, Nancy Allen, Louise Fletcher, Shawn Wallace, Kenneth Tobey, June Lockhart, Mark Goddard, Michael Lerner and directed by Michael Laughlin. Concerns are on the rise for cattle and poultry populations, as Texas and Kansas have seen outbreaks of the avian flu in recent weeks. On Monday it was announced that the first person in Texas was infected with the flu, after coming into contact with cattle that was presumed to be infected. Clinical Associate Professor of Dairy Cattle Production at Texas A&M Dr. Michael Kleinhenz joins the Rundown to discuss how the avian flu is transmitted between animal populations, what impact it has on production, and what concerns he has about transmission into humans. James Patterson has written everything from romance to non-fiction and children's books, with over 100 novels appearing on The New York Times Best Seller list, making him one of the most popular authors of all time. Patterson's latest novel, Number One Lawyer, is a murder mystery he penned with the help of former prosecutor and author Nancy Allen, chronicling a small-town lawyer accused of killing his wife. Although most of the crimes he writes about are solved, Patterson joins the Rundown to discuss his new FOX Nation special Unsolved with James Patterson, which highlights three separate murder cases that remain open to this day. Plus, commentary by National Security Expert, Dr. Rebecca Grant. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
