Dany survives a poisoning plot thanks to Ser Jorah's timely intervention. Khal Drogo is so grateful he gives Mormont a horse and Dany what she wishes: the Khalasar will cross the Narrow Sea and take back the Iron Throne for her. Mackelly and Simon fortify their castles in anticipation. Chapter Review: Khal Drogo has got no interest in Westeros. As far as he is concerned, the world that his future son Rhaego will mount ends at the Narrow Sea. Daenerys Targaryen doesn't push her luck (who would after witnessing Viserys' coronation?) Drogo goes hunting. Daenerys goes to the market. Ser Jorah gets news from Westeros. A wine-seller digs out a special cask just for the Khaleesi. Ser Jorah thinks the merchant should sample his own wares. The man apparently doesn't like wine and tries unsuccessfully to high-tail it out of there. Wait a minute! It was poison. A letter from Illyrio Mopatis to Viserys confirms that a lordship is on offer to anyone who can murder a Targaryen. Daenerys feels the dragon stirring within her, and tries to wake her dragon eggs with fire. No luck. Drogo kills a white lion, but that is quickly forgotten when he learns of the plot. The usurper tried to kill his wife, in Vaes Dothrak? He has gone too far. The best horse in the khalasar for Ser Jorah for saving Daenerys. Daenerys and the khalasar have made it to Vaes Dothrak. Daeny plans a night evening with her brother that goes very awry. We also get Jorah's take on how the Dothraki would do in battle in Westeros. We tell you all about it and give you as many insights as we can pack into one episode. Plus, Simon shares a story that might just put a smile on your face. Chapter Review: Daenerys Targaryen, her brother Viserys, Ser Jorah Mormont, and the rest of Khal Drogo's khalasar have finally made it to Vaes Dothrak, the lone Dothraki city. Daeny is surprised to see how big, but sparse, the city is. We learn that Viserys is about out of patience waiting for his promised 10,000 Dothraki warriors that he was promised for Daeny's hand in marriage. We also find out that Ser Jorah seems to have no respect left for his supposed king. Jorah tells Daeny that the Dothraki have the advantage against a Westerosi army in the field, but would not be able to sustain a siege.The question is whether Robert would be smart enough to utilize the advantage of the castles, or if he would rush to meet the Dothraki in battle. When Daeny is told Khal Drogo will be away their first evening in the city, she plans a nice dinner with her brother, where she plans to present him gifts of traditional Dothraki clothing. Things go wrong when Viserys thinks Daeny has commanded him to her, and get worse when he sees her gifts. A heated sibling dispute ensues, leaving Daeny sad and bruised and Viserys furious and bleeding from his face. Daenerys Targaryen is embracing her role as khaleesi of the Dothraki khalasar. Her brother Viserys isn't fitting in so well. When she gives a command that applies to him, she Wakes the Dragon. Only it's Viserys who ends up sobbing in the dirt. Chapter Review: In chapter 23 of "A Game of Thrones", from the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, Daenerys Targaryen gets her first look at the Dothraki Sea. She finds it beautiful. When she gives the command not to follow her, while she rides into it, her brother Viserys is enraged. She pushes back for the first time and as she waits for the retaliation Jhogo whips Viserys in the neck and drags him to the ground. Daeny doesn't want him hurt, but makes him walk behind the khalasar, one of the worst punishments in Dothraki culture. Daeny and Ser Jorah discuss Viserys being unfit to rule, and the smallfolk not caring who rules them. The chapter ends with Daeny being pregnant, on her 14th nameday. Archer season 10, or Archer: 1999 brings back the crew that once comprised a bumbling, privatized group of intelligence operatives named I.S.I.S., a concept which, for several reasons, has not aged well. So, in keeping with the show's recent seasons of new milieus each season, this go-round looks like a retro-futuristic, dystopian vision of the “future” of 1999, as imagined by 1970's sci-fi movies, and TV shows like Space: 1999. Nog twee blogs, dus we gaan van de geschiedenis naar het nu. De vreemdste historische verhalen vind je als Nederlander natuurlijk rondom de koloniale tijd: het perspectief van een gekoloniseerd land geeft je een ander beeld van die periode. Het is eigenlijk vooral erg jammer die kolonisatie. Want wat een kaalslag heeft het opgeleverd. Dat kun je goed zien in het beroemde Chileense museum "Museo Precolombino", letterlijk vertaald het "Voor-Columbus-Museum". Wat een verscheidenheid van volken en gebruiken bestond er in Chili voordat de Spaanse legers daar vakkundig overheen gewalst zijn. De eerste kolonisators van Chili waren overigens niet eens de Spanjaarden, maar de Inca's, vanuit Peru. Zij kwamen tot de rivier de Maule en kregen het daar aan de stok met de Mapuches. Dat bleek een slecht idee, het is de Inca's nooit gelukt om de Mapuches te verslaan. Daarna kwamen de Spanjaarden, met Diego de Almagro in 1535 en Pedro de Valdivia 1540. Die laatste kwam tot de rivier Bio-Bio en liep daar ook vast op de Mapuches. De Mapuches hebben Pedro de Valdivia gevangen en vermoord. En laat ik even aanhaken bij de Game of Thrones hype: Volgens de legendes hebben de Mapuches Pedro de Valdivia vermoord door hem gesmolten goud te laten drinken. Viserys Targaryen heeft in Pedro de Valdivia dus een lotgenoot. Voordat hij vermoord werd heeft Pedro de Valdivia behoorlijk wat bereikt: hij stichtte de steden Santiago, Concepción, Valparaíso en Valdivia. Met zijn opvolgers heeft hij het Encomiendasysteem (met de fameuze haciendas) geïnstalleerd, feitelijk een systeem van grootgrondbezitters. De grote verschillen tussen arm en rijk van nu in Chili hebben hun wortels in dit systeem. En een bijzonder onderdeel van de historie: ook de Nederlanders waren hier in Chili! Zowel in 1600 en 1642 kwamen er Nederlandse schepen, nota bene gestuurd door een samenwerking van de WIC en de VOC. Omdat Nederland toen middenin de tachtigjarige oorlog zat en Spanje die financierde met zilver uit Zuid-Amerika, was het idee om in Chili zoveel mogelijk rotzooi te schoppen, de Spaanse activiteiten te ontregelen en ook zelf op zoek te gaan naar zilver en goud. Eerst kwam Sebastian de Cordes en later Hendrik Brouwer, een van de beste kapiteins van die tijd. De Nederlanders brachten het tot het eiland Chiloe, waar ze samen met de Mapuches onrust gingen stoken bij de Spanjaarden. Dat leverde geen structurele aanwezigheid op, want toen duidelijk werd dat de Nederlanders zelf ook achter zilver en goud aanzaten, werden ze er bij kop en kont weer uitgegooid door de Mapuches. In 1810 riep Chili (toen het gebied ten noorden van de rivier Bio-Bio) de onafhankelijkheid uit. Vervolgens heeft men zelf de oorlog tegen de Mapuches doorgezet en eigenlijk speelt deze strijd om land en rechten nog steeds. Daarna moest het diepere Zuiden bevolkt worden, daarvoor zijn veel Duitse kolonisten uitgenodigd. Dat zie je in die regio's nog steeds terug. Daarnaast kreeg Chili zelf ook imperialistische trekjes. Dat zie je bijvoorbeeld bij de Salpeteroorlog, waarbij delen van Peru en Bolivia werden veroverd, en bij de annexatie van Paaseiland. Vooral in het uiterste Zuiden, waar de Chilenen begin 1900 aankwamen, hebben ze verschillende volken compleet uitgeroeid. Wat dat betreft is Chili wel vergelijkbaar met de VS: van een kolonie naar een kolonisator. Een leuk feitje om mee af te sluiten: Sebastian de Cordes en zijn mannen werden tijdens hun samenwerking door de Mapuches ook voorzien van levensmiddelen. Daarbij zaten ook aardappelen. Zij zijn daarmee de eerste Nederlanders ooit die aardappelen hebben gegeten. Zo zie je maar weer: al het goede komt uit Chili! Op de radio bij "De Wereld van BNNVARA" mocht ik er meer over vertellen.
