I'm back, baby. I've been away traveling for podcasts and am excited to bring you new ones with Michael Levin, William Hahn, Robin Hanson, and Emily Riehl, coming up shortly. They're already recorded. I've been recovering from a terrible flu but pushed through it to bring you today's episode with Urs Schreiber. This one is quite mind-blowing. It's quite hairy mathematics, something called higher category theory, and how using this math (which examines the structure of structure) allows one manner of finding "something" from "nothing." Here, "nothing" means the empty set, and "something" is defined as fermions and even 11D supergravity. It's the first time this material has been presented in this manner. Enjoy. Energizing & Empowering Minds is all about helping parents "live beyond the diagnosis". Originally started in 1996 by Kristin's mother to serve families with bleeding disorders, it has grown to provide psycho-social programs uniquely designed to serve parents and families with any type of medical condition. The classes offered help parents understand their children aren't "china dolls" and remind them "they are the parent". It's important to set acceptable boundaries. Kristin offers a fantastic analogy to driving on the road. Over the years, we've worked in partnership with Bleeding Disorder Treatment Centers and other affiliated organizations to bring in our specialized Empact Parenting programs. Facilitators are typically trained social workers, counselors, nurses, and parents of children with medical diagnoses and conditions. To conduct and support programs, we either train local teams OR provide members of our National Team. If you want to learn more about scheduling training or programs for your hospital or organization, please contact us at info@eeminds.org." Foto: Bernt Hermele

A client didn’t share an important piece of information—and the therapist didn’t ask. The result: a serious situation that massage could have made much worse. In this episode, we talk about a surprising relationship between bariatric surgery and liver failure—and about the need to ask open-ended, inviting questions that will help us get a clear and full understanding of our clients’ health challenges. Richard Eilenberg (13 January 1848, Merseburg – 5 December 1927, Berlin) was a German composer. His musical career began with the study of piano and composition. At 18 years old, he composed his first work - a concert overture.
SHARK TANK originated as a hit overseas, but it struggled to find an American home and languished for some time as a format in the Sony catalogue. Mark Burnett Productions eventually caught wind of the idea and partnered with Sony to eek out a six episode order for the show on ABC. After surviving a near cancellation prior to premiere and an abysmal first week of ratings, the show ultimately found its footing and fought for and earned a second season before finally cementing its place as an American TV mainstay. 10 seasons later, hundreds of episodes produced and millions of dollars invested, SHARK TANK is a rare show that both entertains AND changes lives. Originally sold by David Eilenberg (then of MBP and now CCO of ITV America) and purchased/overseen by Corie Henson (then of ABC and now an EVP at Fox) SHARK TANK kicked off a professional relationship between these 2 highly respected members of the TV community who are now producing their 3rd franchise together. I was thrilled to bring together these 2 talents for a wonderful conversation about how SHARK TANK was born and how their own overlapping professional relationship continues to thrive. Enjoy!
In this presentation, Uday brings together two strands of Christopher Strachey’s thought: parametric polymorphism and abstract models of storage. The term parametric polymorphism was introduced in by Strachey who distinguished it from “ad hoc” polymorphism. In the words of John Reynolds, “a parametric polymorphic function is one that behaves the same way for all types,” whereas an ad hoc polymorphic function may have unrelated meanings at different types. A very similar intuition arose in mathematics, some twenty years earlier, for which Eilenberg and MacLane proposed a “General Theory of Natural Equivalences”, what we now call category theory. Relating the two notions allows us to develop a broad view of “parametricity” (the idea of acting the same way for all types), which is applicable not only to programming languages but also to mathematics and perhaps other disciplines. A particularly important application of this broad view is for Strachey’s “mathematical semantics” of programming languages. For modelling imperative programming languages that operate by manipulating a store, Strachey presented a basic model of storage based on “locations”, while promising a further paper on an “abstract model of storage” to appear in future. Unfortunately the latter never appeared. In succeeding work, Reynolds proposed an abstract model of store as well as an “intuitionistic” functor category approach to model the stack discipline of the store. O'Hearn and Tennent made the crucial observation that the model needs to be embellished with parametricity to capture the data abstraction aspects of the store. In this talk, Uday reviews these developments as well as his own recent work on integrating the Reynolds model with parametricity to capture the fact that state changes of the store are irreversible. One way to understand these developments is to view them as a “parametric mathematical semantics” of programming languages.
Dr. Erin Albert, PharmD, MBA, and Kristin Eilenberg, MBA, join Pharmacy Podcast Network founder Todd S. Eury to discuss the 2017 Annual HIMSS Conference in Orlando Florida. The 2017 HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition, February 19–23, 2017 in Orlando, brought together 42,000+ health IT professionals, clinicians, executives and vendors from around the world. Show notes, blog post from Dr. Erin Albert: Well, I've tried to absorb as much knowledge as I can before my head explodes at #HIMSS17 this week. It's been a BLAST talking to so many rockstars of HIT and healthcare that I'm starstruck! One of the coolest new methods of learning for me at the meeting was actually co-hosting at Intrepid Healthcare's #JoinTheConversation podcast desk at Experian Health with Joe Lavelle in place of Todd Eury as a co-host of the Pharmacy Podcast for a few of the episodes. I even had a slip in the NCPDP session where I created a new word (adjudification = faster adjudication of healthcare claims. You're welcome.) What I also realized in that the harmless invite of asking people I'd only worked with on the phone or via Skype in the past to the booth was that it really boosted traffic for the space. So much so that it would be wise for orgs going to large scale meetings in the future would benefit from having live podcasting from their booths. Just saying! If you need help with this at your next big pharmacy meeting booth, I'm certain that Todd Eury would be happy to help you out, or in the broader healthcare community, Joe would. Either org is great, and podcasting is where all the cool action is these days…just ask me and my new pink socks. The other thing HIMSS did really well was having a social media team of ambassadors - I think EVERY trade show (inside or outside of pharmacy) should have one. These are digital influencers that can spread the halo of all the awesome things happening at your conference online through social portals. And let's face it – who better to spread the word on a conference than those who would be at the conference anyway, speaking at the conference, and being the awesome thought leaders that they always are? And, I'll go critical on my first profession for a moment: we don't have enough social media ambassadors in pharmacy. For whatever reason – we need more pharmacists tweeting, Facebook live-ing, Periscoping, Pinning, you name it. (And HIMSS, if you need a pharmacist for 18 into social media – I'd be happy to help!) These are the items I will definitely retain from #HIMSS17. PREVIEW SHOW: http://pharmacypodcast.com/podcast/himss-2017-preview-show/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
