Key Takeaways:Lifestyle-Centered Marketing: Highlighting features such as walkability, proximity to amenities, and recreational opportunities can help potential buyers envision their lives in the property. Unique lifestyles, like waterfront living or urban rooftop experiences, make properties more appealing.Visual Storytelling: Techniques like drone photography, nighttime imagery, and client-provided seasonal photos enhance marketing materials. These visuals emphasize not just the home but also the surrounding community, amenities, and lifestyle opportunities.Inclusive and Authentic Marketing: Sensitivity in videography and photography is vital, such as ensuring diverse representation in marketing materials. Collecting imagery and videos from clients can create a more authentic portrayal of the property's charm and functionality.Mini Movies: Beyond walkthrough videos, creating “mini movies” adds a cinematic element to property marketing, telling a story about the lifestyle it offers. Examples include showcasing family gatherings, outdoor activities, or neighborhood experiences. These videos can spark viral interest when done tastefully, even with modest budgets.Elevated Copywriting: Avoiding clichés and creating authentic, lifestyle-focused property descriptions are crucial. AI tools can assist in writing but require oversight to maintain accuracy and authenticity. Drawing inspiration from luxury magazines or engaging freelance writers are excellent ways to craft compelling narratives.Unique Showing Experiences: Sellers and agents can enhance property tours by creating immersive experiences, like ATV tours on large properties, hosting events that showcase the property's potential, or emphasizing the unique features of the location.Additional Insights:Marketing should tread carefully when representing demographics, ensuring it is inclusive and thoughtful.Creative videos and storytelling approaches, like mini movies, have been successfully used to highlight a property's exclusivity and lifestyle appeal, such as a famous Australian luxury property video that emphasized privacy through a bold concept.Storytelling can help properties stand out in a crowded market by evoking emotion, creating buzz, and showcasing unique lifestyle possibilities.

In tonight's episode of "Sleepless in Singapore," I bring you along on a remarkable journey to Greenland, a trip ignited by my rediscovered passion for photography. This adventure began in a small workshop in Singapore, where I connected with Han and Charmaine, two inspiring photographers. Their breathtaking Instagram shots of Greenland's icy landscapes captivated me, leading to an impromptu decision to join their expedition. This marked my very first foray into the Arctic, a striking contrast from Singapore's tropical climate. Greenland welcomed us with its stunning icebergs and vibrantly colored houses, offering a photographer's paradise. Despite unforeseen challenges like cancelled flights and unexpected accommodations, the experience was filled with thrilling firsts. From witnessing the awe-inspiring northern lights to exploring glaciers, and even tasting local delicacies like whale blubber and seal, the journey was an incredible blend of natural wonder and cultural exploration. The raw beauty of Greenland, the camaraderie formed, and the exhilaration of capturing its essence through my lens made for an unforgettable expedition. As this Greenlandic adventure concludes, I'm left reflecting on the unique, breathtaking landscapes and the profound experiences that will linger in my memory.

The trade-offs of photographing your own listings versus hiring a professional photographer for real estate listings include cost effectiveness, quality, time, and efficiency. Capturing your own listings may be a more cost-effective option, especially for smaller properties or those with smaller marketing budgets. However, professional photographers have the experience and skills to deliver high-quality results, which may be more important for some real estate agents. Additionally, hiring a professional photographer can save time, as it may be more efficient to delegate the task to someone else rather than doing it yourself. On the other hand, capturing your own listings can give you more control and flexibility over the process, and may allow you to respond quickly to any last-minute changes or updates. In this episode we'll be answering this question: "Hey Josh, I'm always looking for ways to save time and money while still delivering top-quality results to my clients. I'm curious, what are some of the main trade-offs you see when it comes to deciding between photographing your own listings or hiring a professional like yourself?"-Jacob D. Bio for Mr. Jack Bushong Jr. Jack Bushong received his degree in Meteorology at Florida State University in 1988. He trained for Television weathercasting the following year but was recruited by the National Weather Service (NWS) which is a Federal Agency and a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). His first NWS office was near his hometown of Muskegon, MI, in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he had extensive training in Surface Weather Observations, Weather Forecasting and the issuance of Severe Weather Warnings to the public. Mr. Bushong, also, received training in Pilot Weather Briefings. In 1991, Mr. Bushong transferred to his hometown at the NWS Office in Muskegon. NWS Muskegon was a weather radar site where he received extensive weather radar training in order to be on shift alone. The NWS was undergoing the most ambitious modernization and restructuring program through the early 1990s where the new NWS Doppler Radar would become a major part of all NWS offices across the country. In 1994, Mr. Bushong was transferred with promotion to the NWS Southeast River Forecast Center (SERFC) in Atlanta, GA. The SERFC has responsibility for all river forecasting and river flooding forecasts across the Southeastern US and Puerto Rico. Mr. Bushong worked alongside hydrologists as a meteorologist where he produced rainfall forecasts for river forecasting models. He also was trained in river forecasting and Hydrology as well. One important duty for the SERFC by Mr. Bushong was to calibrate radar precipitation estimates based on ground-based rain gauges. Under his large area of responsibility, Mr. Bushong needed to have an enormous amount of training and knowledge of how weather radars work. Across the Southeast USA, 35 NWS radars are used in a mosaic and calibrated with over 2000 rain gauges. Mr. Bushong has a great interest in computer programming and web page development. From the beginning of the Internet age, Mr. Bushong produced the first web page for the SERFC and remained webmaster until his retirement. Mr. Bushong also used his programming skills to produce graphics from the text products the NWS produced at the time by mapping river conditions and forecasts. Mr. Bushong was the first webmaster across the NWS to create graphs (Hydrographs), in real-time, depicting river and flood forecasts to make radar forecasts easier to read for customers such as FEMA. In fact, Mr. Bushong received the Regional Director's Award along with a cash bonus for not only a near perfect rain forecast for Hurricane Floyd in 1999, but also rushed to complete the programming to display hydrographs as requested by FEMA. Hurricane Floyd resulted in the worst flooding in North Carolina history. NWS Headquarters decided to use Mr. Bushong's examples of new web products for their creation of the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction System (AHPS). Mr. Bushong was also on the NWS team which brough real time NWS radar images to the web. After retirement from the NWS in 2016, Mr. Bushong kept his interest in computers and programming. Other interests include Photography, Drone Photography and 3D Printing, and playing Flight Simulator in his spare time. Mr. Bushong has been a big fan of Microsoft Flight Simulator since 1993, fulfilling his strong interest in aircraft. Today we talk with Forrest Funk (@funkdrone) who many of you will know online from his stunning and unique aerial drone photography. We find out what's involved in his position as a manager of photography for Agua Caliente Casinos in California and how his recent photography journey led him to acquire this role. We hear Forrest's view on Instagram reels and how in the beginning he was totally against them, but has now come to somewhat embrace them in the pursuit of online growth. Forrest also tells us all about how he approaches aerial photography and what he's looking for while flying in the sky. Lastly, Forrest gives us some insight into how to look more comfortable on the other side of the camera. We sometimes find that we ourselves need to be modelling apparel we're shooting or we needing to use friends as inexperienced models for gigs. He offers some advice on how to get you or the model more comfortable having your picture taken. Thanks to iStorage for being this episode's sponsor!Check out their External Password Encrypted Hard Drives : http://www.istorage-us.com/Use Code "TPM15" for a 15% discount!Make a donation via PayPal for any amount you feel is equal to the value you receive from our podcast episodes! It's leaf peeping time in the northern hemisphere when trees break into riots of color as autumn plows a path from north to south. Two of the best regions for capturing the show here in the US are across New England and along California's magnificent Sierra Nevada. To help get you up to speed when preparing for your own foliage excursions, we speak with landscape photography specialists in each of these regions—Jerry Monkman in New England and G. Dan Mitchell in California's Sierra Nevada. After weighing in with informed opinions about when and where to find the best color this year, Monkman and Mitchell make suggestions about fresh ways to picture the scenery and discuss topographic and geological differences between east and west. We also talk gear—both DSLR and mirrorless—with Monkman opting for the Canon 5D Mark IV or EOS R5, and Mitchell alternating between the Canon 5DS R and FUJIFILM X series mirrorless. For all of the above and much more, please join us for this informative discussion and discover new ways to reap an autumn photography harvest and take your landscape and scenic photography to new heights. It's been a minute since we spoke about drones on the B&H Photography Podcast. The last time we did, it was about drones in news photography and before that, drone work in landscape photography. But today we welcome back to the show one of our earliest guests on the podcast, Randy Scott Slavin. Slavin is an aerial photographer and drone operator, as well as a motion director and still photographer. He started his company Yeah Drones in 2013, at the dawn of drone use in film and commercial work, and his clients include Showtime, Netflix, ESPN, Saturday Night Live, and CNN, among many others. Slavin's work crosses all genres from advertising to film, working with small teams and big crews, and he understands drone use from the photographer's perspective as well as a flyer, racer, and builder of drones. With Slavin, we discuss his recent projects, his workflow, and how he decides which drone is best for each assignment. We also talk about drones and cameras for large professional shoots and those geared more for advanced amateurs. We discuss new technologies and the recent improvements made in navigation, cameras, and batteries and ask which manufacturers are competing with DJI in the drone marketplace. Join us for this informative conversation. This episode is sponsored by Logitech for Creators, and their Blue Yeti USB Microphone. Guest: Randy Scott Slavin Photographs © Randy Scott Slavin

Chris is the owner of Chris Dantonio Drone Photography Introduction: Chris says he got in a “little late” and “by accident”, because he started about four years ago at 43 years old. His parents bought him a little toy drone that had a small camera. He flew it for a week, broke it and knew he needed something better. He then bought a $100 drone and broke that in about a month. The DJI Phantom 3 Standard was his first real drone. He started taking pictures around Philadelphia just as a hobby, and really enjoyed it because he’d grown up around photography. His father, a photograph teacher at the local high school, would set up backgrounds to do portraits in the living room. “Photography has always been a part of my life and to be able to do it with a drone and be able to show people things in the city, especially that you didn't even know were there, is nice.” He could show people things that are very rarely seen from the ground level, which intrigued him more. He started an Instagram account, which has been a godsend, Chris says, because it's free. It doesn't cost any money and, with good work and hard work, you get followers. Chris just hit 10,000 followers a couple of months ago. After that, Chris knew he had to get licensed in order to sell pictures. Sure enough, he bought a study guide, studied for six months and took the test. “It's because of the study guide, I did really well. For those of you wondering ‘Should I get a study guide?’ I’d highly recommended it...” Then the business started, almost by accident. David: What year did you get your first Phantom and when did you say, ‘let’s get rolling on this’ and decide to get your Part 107? Do you do drones as a full-time gig or do you have a full-time job or some other supplemental income to go along with your drone business? I got the Phantom in 2016, started studying in 2017 and took the test in early 2018. This is a part time thing for me. Leaving my day job is really far off. I’m also an executive chef for an elite school outside of Philadelphia, so I have a job that allows me to do the drone thing, since nights and weekends are perfect for drone work. David: It's nice to have something that covers your bills and provides the freedom to experiment and pursue things without pressure to make immediate income. There’s pressure to get it going, but you don't want so much overwhelming stress that you're just going to crumble. Chris agrees that it adds stress to a day job—in addition to family and everything else going in in his life, but it’s also nice to pick and choose what jobs you want to do because your next mortgage payment isn't relying on that. Chris hasn't bought a drone with his own money for two years; the business has paid for all of the equipment. In early 2018, Chris got an email from an Instagram follower who worked for American Idol who was from Philadelphia and had seen Chris’ work. That was his first real big job. He had to join ICG Local 600 to shoot as a contractor for the show, which he pays dues for, but found out how beneficial it would be down the road for future work. The show was high stress, they worked all day, but got a very high reward. The third shot of the opening of American Idol was their shot. When subsequent clients came, it helped because they knew that we had already worked for a popular show. David: With American Idol were you just shooting content and handing it over and their guys were editing it? For all his major jobs, Chris gave them raw footage and they had somebody in their organization that handled all of the editing, cutting and doing everything with it. This was the case for Comcast, American Idol, and NFL films. David: What happened next? How did your next client find you? The next person to call was Comcast who wanted to purchase rights to footage for unlimited use. Chris says every job they've had—big or small—has all found them through Instagram. Chris says, “it's a smart business tool that doesn't cost money...the key is getting reposted to get your name out there.” With Comcast, a higher-up had been following him for a while, seeing Chris post shots of cool and different angles of the city. He has never really done any outbound sales activities to pursue clients. “I would be out there shooting regardless. If I had a thousand followers or less, I would still be out there shooting that much because I love it, which makes it easier. if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life.” David: One of the things people love on this podcast is specifics and numbers. It inspires people to know what's possible. Can you tell us what you make? His daily rate early on (for American Idol) was $1500 for an all-day shoot. Comcast wanted five photographs and five 15 to 30 second videos. He quoted $500 per still/$1000 per video. He said he’d give them the whole package for $6,000—they didn't bat an eyelash and wrote the check. To come up with those numbers, Chris researched what rights he was giving up for unlimited use. If it had been exclusive—where he was never allowed to use that footage—the number would have doubled because he’d lose all future profit from that footage. He did a lot of research as to what Getty images charges for a single image and then cut the deal. Chris says, “It's extremely important to go online and research things, as well as talk to friends in the photography industry, who you will meet through Instagram. They will help you figure out what your service is worth to you.” Later, a photography director for NFL films reached out, asking for footage of the NFL films building for the opening of a new show. He shot all kinds of things for three hours, getting paid $1500. He got to work with cameramen who’d shot some of the most important sporting events of our time. They knew exactly what they wanted, which made it so much easier on Chris to be directed in that way. David: It sounds like you're getting pretty good pricing per gig. How many jobs are you flying per month and what are you getting paid these days? Chris tends to average two or three jobs a month, but sometimes those jobs have multiple flights. His pricing has increased a little bit—his hourly rate is now $300/hr; his daily rate is $2000. David: One of the biggest questions is ‘How do I find clients?’, ‘How do I find work?’ For Chris, many commercial projects have come from family members or people he knew in high school. He got a Land Rover Jaguar job from a high school friend who is now the sales manager there. He knew Chris was into this because he posted on Facebook constantly. It was all about getting the word out that that he’s “the drone guy” on social media. David: Obviously, it pays to have really good photos that are worth sharing...Do you have any strategies when you're posting on Instagram? Are you also posting to Facebook or doing them independently? Chris does not post to Facebook every time because he has a separate Facebook account just for the drone business. Philly Drone Shots is the only Instagram account he has, and it’s listed as a business. He usually posts directly and separately to Facebook. Chris’ advice is, “When posting to Instagram, hashtagging and tagging are how you get seen with little followers. If you're just starting out on Instagram, hashtag and tag large accounts in the city you live in with things like #gameofdrones, #photooftheday, #dronephotography. When people look at those hashtags, they see your photos, whether they follow you or not. That's how you build your followers.” He got 500 followers just from a repost from a local news organization that has 213,000 followers. Last words from Chris... “If you keep working at it, they WILL come. They will find you and they will see you.” Connect with Chris: Website: Chris Dantonio Drone Photography Philly Facebook: Chris Dantonio Drone Photography Instagram: @phillydroneshots Have a Drone Business? Could your brand benefit from getting some spectacular aerial footage? If the answer is yes, what exactly do you need to know about drone photography? On this episode, Frank Datzer, director of photography and licensed drone pilot for DCP Video, shares his expertise. About Frank Datzer Frank has been involved in videography and video production for 35 years. He spent most of his career at U.S. Bank and later G.E. Medical. He owned a DVD Duplication Service before getting back into video shooting and production with his own company, DCP Video. He’s also done two, feature-length, independent films on Amazon called “Mister Scrooge to See You” and “The Return.” Commercial Drone Photography Requirements A drone license is required for anyone interested in making any money shooting drone footage. According to Frank, the test is not as easy as you would think. It is not about your skill as a drone pilot, but rather your knowledge of weather, how to read a Tack Chart and how airport traffic is handled. In the U.S, the test is a standardized FAA test, which is basically a junior pilot’s license consisting of 600 questions. You only need to answer 60 of the 600 questions, but you never know what those 60 questions will be. You must have knowledge of everything on the test, if you hope to pass. Frank says there are some background pieces available online that can help you prepare for the test. Internationally, licensing varies greatly, so you need to do your homework before doing anything outside the U.S. Drone hobbyists do not need a license, but there are still some rules to follow. There can be no monetization of any kind without a license and if caught, fines can be as high as $10,000. Things to Consider Before Scheduling Drone Photography Ask for credentials from drone pilots Every location is different so do your homework before setting anything up Get permission wherever you are shooting Allow two weeks’ notice for permissions Make allowances for inclement weather conditions Drones are typically not allowed to fly near airports Drones can’t fly above 400 ft. (Frank says low-level drone shots at 20-to-25-ft. can be very dramatic and beautiful, especially in a warehouse) Drones must be kept in your line of sight Night flying can be done one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset Flying over people, sporting events, emergency response teams and stadiums are prohibited No drugs or alcohol are allowed while flying Why Hire Pros? Four reasons: safety, quality, experience at getting the best shots and ultimately, the end product. If you are concerned about price, drone photography is less than hiring a helicopter. And, you may want to consider hiring someone like Frank who uses drone photography as a value-add. His drone camera is just another tool he uses like lighting or a second camera. If you are considering getting into drone photography, Frank recommends purchasing a DJI Mavic Mini at around $300. Cheaper models typically don’t handle as well. Then, go to a park with no trees, start by flying low and keep practicing. Connect with Frank Email: frank@dcpvideo.com LinkedIn: @frankdatzer Instagram: DCP_Video

This week I interview my frequent contributor and listener Richard Lycett about his photography work and sailing adventures Richard Lycett is a photographer his website is http://www.richardlycettphotography.co.uk/ Here is a recent video he produced. https://youtu.be/UDgUReGH6jg Richard also shared some tips of Drone Photography with me in a letter: "One of you’d listeners reached out to me and asked about drone tips. Maybe you could add this to the show notes? A small drone is always best as space is a premium on a boat so I highly recommend the DJI Mavic Pro (even the original one is very good). Catching is always the hardest bit, and although I haven’t done this, fixing up some sort of rod underneath to grab it by is recommended. SV Delos rigged one up and I thought they were going to make a commercial product but I’ve just checked their store and there’s nothing there. Tips for flying and not pickling it: Turn off all sensors. Sounds odd but you’ll never get it close enough to the boat or catch it unless you do. Launch off the stern as it keeps a gps lock, and if you’re moving forwards, it’s going to fly backwards. Catching. You can catch at the stern but the Bimini can get in the way. I prefer to catch on the foredeck by the Genoa. Practice this on land, and then at dock, before trying at sea." Want me to go sailing with you? Then contact me! Talking about Drones Over the past year or so Drones such as the Phantom and Mavik Pro by DJI have received their fare share of bad press due to some irresponsible behaviour by the minority; however their popularity has far from diminished and their use becoming more and more widespread…and not just in the creative field. In this episode Glyn chats with “Ian in London” whom he’d originally became aware of through YouTube. A self confessed ‘hobbyist’ Ian has developed a fast growing YouTube Channel where he covers all aspects of Drone use ranging from tips and best practice for successful flights and capturing stunning video and still images, do’s and don’t’s, travelling with drones, qualifications and much more. Ian carries with him a wealth of knowledge gained through experience and as a CAA qualified (PfCO) Drone Pilot, so if you have a drone, are thinking of getting a drone or are simply curious, you’ll get lots from what he shares in this episode. A great guy with a great attitude, a willingness to share and true testament to how being consistent can lead to bigger things. Tom Noske is a drone pilot from Melbourne, Australia, that is creating beautiful pieces of art with his drone. Yeah, we're going to learn all about his shooting style and editing process during this chat! Tom is currently flying the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, and absolutely loves the larger Hasselblad sensor. He was flying the original Mavic Pro, but since upgrading he's caught the bug for larger sensors. Yeah, that means that the Inspire 2 is on his list for his next purchase. On the commercial side of things, Tom is working with sports teams and fitness professionals. He works with rugby teams, rowing teams, and wants to get into shooting music videos. He's also doing corporate work like real estate, but admits that he doesn't like it as much as the other areas. His editing workflow starts in Adobe Lightroom and then moves into Photoshop. He starts with camera calibrations, tone curves, white balance, and some other basic adjustments in Lightroom. Once in Photoshop, he adds and removes new things, creates atmosphere, moves subjects around, and then returns to Lightroom. Why back to LR? Well, you'll have to listen in to get that detail! One of Tom's biggest tips is that you should always shoot at sunrise or sunset. He loves using the natural light, and creating large scale photos. How about you? Do you like shooting at sunrise or sunset? Do you find that in the summer sunrise is too early to catch, so you find that sunset is easier to make? Ok I hope that you enjoyed this week's chat with Tom Noske from Melbourne. As you can see from the photo above, and his instagram profile, he is creating some incredible art. Are you fired up to try and create something along the same lines as well? Show us what you've got! And if you liked the show, please share it with someone else who loves drones :)

Over the past few weeks and months I've found myself having more fun with photography again. The frustrations of photography mounted over the years as I felt undervalued in the industry, which is part of the reason I walked away from the gallery and studio years ago. Too many requests for free advice, too many lookers and not buyers....you get the idea. So I'm thrilled that as I've been assembling new courses on Udemy for Lightroom, Drone Photography, and Landscape photography the joy has come back into my photographic work. That's why the podcast is late today. I was going nuts with keywords for the micro stock sites I've started working with. This weekend I'll be out shooting for fun! And for images to sell micro stock. That's my idea of fun. What are you up to this weekend for fun? There's so much out there these days about the tiny home movement. Living a more minimalist lifestyle and all that. I have to say, I've been a full time Airstreamer for over a decade now, and I think the original tiny homes might just be RV's. Mobile home, small footprint, and definitely requiring a conscious effort to not clutter your little home. Today's podcast is a short one. I just wanted to wish everyone a happy long weekend. This weekend the Airstream stayed put. And I almost achieved relaxation....almost.
