I'm back, baby. I've been away traveling for podcasts and am excited to bring you new ones with Michael Levin, William Hahn, Robin Hanson, and Emily Riehl, coming up shortly. They're already recorded. I've been recovering from a terrible flu but pushed through it to bring you today's episode with Urs Schreiber. This one is quite mind-blowing. It's quite hairy mathematics, something called higher category theory, and how using this math (which examines the structure of structure) allows one manner of finding "something" from "nothing." Here, "nothing" means the empty set, and "something" is defined as fermions and even 11D supergravity. It's the first time this material has been presented in this manner. Enjoy. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught “that the book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the key stone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” But what exactly are precepts? And how are those recorded in an ancient record relevant to our lives today? In this episode Church history and doctrine professor Dr. Maclane Heward discusses ways to identify key precepts in the Book of Mormon and intentionally incorporated them into our lives. He examines a micro approach (like verse-by-verse analysis) and a macro approach (such as examining larger sections or entire books for overarching themes) for uncovering and understanding precepts. Further, he shares how applying such precepts can lead to personal growth, increased spiritual understanding, and a deeper sense of purpose and direction. By studying and applying the precepts found in the Book of Mormon, we can strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ and develop a closer relationship with him. We get ready for the Christmas holiday with a review of an action thriller CLASSIC that we believe is definitely a "Christmas Movie."It's "We've Seen That!" with T.J. Rives and Jay Betsill talking the 1998 smash hit "Die Hard" starring Bruce Willis. The guys also have a special guest with them, as they welcome Paul Stewart from London, England, to break down the movie that saw Willis turn into an international movie star as he plays "John MacLane." MacLane is the NYPD hero ,who tries to save his wife "Holly" (Bonnie Bedalia) and her co-workers that were taken hostage by terrorist "Hans Gruber" (Alan Rickman) and his crew during the Christmas party at the "Nakatomi Plaza" in Century City. This movie has so many action packed scenes and plenty of humorous moments, as well.So sit back, take your shoes off, and make fists with your toes on the carpet as you relax and listen to the banter on one of the greatest action movies ever made. "Yippee ki yay!" It's "Die Hard" and it's debated on "We've Seen That!"Make sure to follow/subscribe to our podcast on Apple, Spreaker, Spotify, Google, etc.!

"Lightyear" is a story taking place within the "Toy Story" universe as the movie a five-year-old Andy saw in the movie theater that made him want to own a Buzz Lightyear toy. With Chris Evans stepping in to voice the iconic character and a new team of animators at Pixar using the latest technology, the film combines action, comedy, and heart to provide a sci-fi adventure the likes of which the animation studio hasn't given us before. Director and writer Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to down below, or you can subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast app using the links provided. Real life astronaut Tim Peake pops by for a little bonus chat too. In this not-quite prequel to the beloved Toy Story films, Chris Evans (Marvel's Captain America) plays the real Buzz Lightyear – the man that Andy and Bonnie's beloved toy was based on – as he jets off for an intergalactic adventure (with an adorable robot companion). But there's trouble ahead: when he finds himself marooned on a hostile planet, he must try to find a way back home with the help of some ambitious – and haphazard – new Star Command recruits, while also confronting a villainous threat to the universe's safety.

Today on the show, we welcome screenwriter-director Angus MacLane! Angus has now worked at Pixar for over 20 years. He was involved as an animator in films like A Bug's Life (1998), Toy Story 2 (1999), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Cars (2006), Ratatouille (2007), WALL-E (2008), Up (2009), Toy Story 3 (2010) and many more. After co-directing Finding Dory (2016), Angus is about to release his debut feature film, Pixar's Lightyear. Our hosts, Giles Alderson and Dom Lenoir, sat down with Angus to talk with him about his filmmaking journey: He discusses the films that inspired him, how he started working at Pixar, what the industry was like back then, and how he slowly climbed the ranks at Pixar. He obviously talks all about Lightyear, how it came about, the emotional core of the film, the importance of collaboration, tone, and why you need to be an expert on the genre you're working in. Angus gives a lot of great insight into the job as a director, which also applies to live-action directors. Sit back, relax and enjoy this week's episode with Angus MacLane. On June 17th, Pixar presents new sci-fi action/adventure film Lightyear. It's not about the "child's play-thing" from the Toy Story franchise. Or you can choose the bumpier road now and use every opportunity that presents itself to teach your kids that taking the shortcut now will cause their life to be rougher as they mature.” Richard Watts, Entitlemania “There comes a time in your life, and often more than one time, where it's really important to exercise the control over your life that you believe your faith has. If you really say I'm a man of faith, then at some point, you have to exercise that faith.” - Richard Watts "People that are wealth creators will spend their entire lives being considerate of building wealth. But when it comes to their estate plan, they're not going to be here to worry about it. So, they don't put the same amount of effort in looking at and recognizing what the ramifications may be of a poor plan.” - Richard Watts “Often the wanting turns out better than the having. If you can teach yourself that the wanting is often more enjoyable than having; that the journey is more appealing than the destination, you have taught yourself a most valuable life lesson that your kids will learn without words. Teach them not to confuse wants with needs...there are few things more rewarding than needing less.” Richard Watts, Entitlemania This Week on The Wow Factor: The goal behind Family Business Planning and how they help clients with comprehensive family office services How Richard grew the business from six initial client families Why a sense of value tends to fade away when money is no object What ‘option fatigue' is and why it can prevent you from feeling positive about your life Why newly wealthy people, famous or not should practice not having the things that they want How to encourage people to maintain a servant mindset even when they achieve material success The Importance of clever, forward-thinking wealth planning Why drone parents who are strategic in ensuring that their kids don't fail or struggle are doing their kids a disservice Why Richard feels that it's important to stay sharp in terms of your spiritual capital and how he maintains his faith Richard Watts's Words of Wisdom: The spiritual muscle is one that most people don't take the time to exercise, so it can get a little atrophied — but when those spiritual muscles begin to be used and exercised, we begin to recognize spiritual connections all around us and that's such a key element of an optimistic and fulfilled life. Jake, being preoccupied much of the weekend sauntering around Seattle, made nary a single attempt to contact Maclane for their usual Sunday Westbros sesh. So, being a natural born leader, Maclane duped Gage into finally co-hosting another episode. During a seasonally inappropriate snowfall, the dynamic duo take another walk in the middle of the night, and once again meet up with an old nemesis of theirs. Fear not however, as after the ordeal was over, they later had fun playing on the swings at the playground nearby.https://archive.org/download/westbros-once-more-unto-the-coke-machine/WestbrosOnceMoreUntoTheCokeMachine.mp3

NuCypher is a decentralized threshold cryptography network offering interfaces and runtimes for secrets management and dynamic access control. It provides cryptographic infrastructure for privacy preserving applications and it exists as a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain. They are currently in testnet but once launched you will be able to use NuCypher to carry out proxy re-encryption.Proxy re-encryption is a cryptographic method that allows you to delegate re-encryption of data to a third party and in this case validators in the NuCypher network. With this method you issue a re-encryption key that is assigned to a specific public key and a third party has the ability to re-encrypt data for that third party to decrypt. In this case the NuCypher network acts as the third party service. It is useful for when you want to share data, with the ability to revoke access at a later stage. They also have an interesting token distribution mechanism called the WorkLock. This is similar to a Lockdrop but with work required from the participants.MacLane Wilkison, Co-founder and CEO of NuCypher talks about how and why the protocl was created, the challenges faced with it, and the problems it solves.Topics covered in this episode:- MacLane’s background and how he got into the blockchain space- Challenges with working with corporate entities and getting people to understand privacy preserving technologies- The zeroDB protocol and how that led to NuCypher- What was MacLane’s goal with starting NuCypher- What proxy re-encryption is and why it’s desirable over manual systems- What are threshold signatures- Attributability on the protocol- Some use cases of using FHE on NuCypher and why they have chosen this for the protocol- MacLane’s thoughts on trusted hardware- The infrastructure of NuCypher and why it is on Ethereum- Results from the testnet- WorkLock - their token distribution mechanism and how it compares to Lockdrop- How you can set up a node on NuCypher- Current gas costs and the impact of this- The NuCypher business model and how they make money- Where to learn more about NuCypherEpisode links: - [NuCypher Website](nucypher.com)- [NuCypher Discord](https://discord.com/invite/7rmXa3S)- [NuCypher blog](https://blog.nucypher.com/)- [WorkLock](https://blog.nucypher.com/the-worklock/)- [NuCypher Twitter](https://twitter.com/NuCypher)- [MacLane's Twitter](https://twitter.com/MacLaneWilkison)Show notes and listening options: [epicenter.tv/357](https://epicenter.tv/357)
John Green's creepier side comes out as this book goes from zero to uncomfortable real fast... also, Maclane has a cold but don't let that distract you.https://archive.org/download/11excellenceinyoungadultliterature/11%20Excellence%20in%20Young%20Adult%20Literature.mp3
Hey howdy hey there, look who's back. Yes, the recovery from that John Green book took over a year, but we're finally in a healthy place again... just don't mention roller coasters around Maclane or he'll start weeping. Anyhow, we have a new book! It's "The Gospel According to Larry" by Janet Tashjian, and spoiler alert, this gospel is less about God and more about Henry David Thoreau, so don't expect anything too deep. We're reading up to part 3 for next time so strike a yoga pose, grab a soy latte, and get in touch with your inner self as we take this spirit journey together!https://archive.org/download/06averyloosedefinitionofgospel/06%20A%20Very%20Loose%20Definition%20of%20Gospel.mp3
Jim takes a look at one of the early "dinosaur" films made with 1948's "Unknown Island," starring Virginia Grey, Richard Denning, Phillip Reed, Barton MacLane and Dick Wessel. An engaged couple hire a crusty old sea captain to ferry them to a legendary that reportedly has strange and mystifying creatures from the Earth's past. When they are met with a few dinosaurs and a large sloth man, the group realizes they may be in over their head. Find out what happens on this episode of "Monster Attack."
In this presentation, Uday brings together two strands of Christopher Strachey’s thought: parametric polymorphism and abstract models of storage. The term parametric polymorphism was introduced in by Strachey who distinguished it from “ad hoc” polymorphism. In the words of John Reynolds, “a parametric polymorphic function is one that behaves the same way for all types,” whereas an ad hoc polymorphic function may have unrelated meanings at different types. A very similar intuition arose in mathematics, some twenty years earlier, for which Eilenberg and MacLane proposed a “General Theory of Natural Equivalences”, what we now call category theory. Relating the two notions allows us to develop a broad view of “parametricity” (the idea of acting the same way for all types), which is applicable not only to programming languages but also to mathematics and perhaps other disciplines. A particularly important application of this broad view is for Strachey’s “mathematical semantics” of programming languages. For modelling imperative programming languages that operate by manipulating a store, Strachey presented a basic model of storage based on “locations”, while promising a further paper on an “abstract model of storage” to appear in future. Unfortunately the latter never appeared. In succeeding work, Reynolds proposed an abstract model of store as well as an “intuitionistic” functor category approach to model the stack discipline of the store. O'Hearn and Tennent made the crucial observation that the model needs to be embellished with parametricity to capture the data abstraction aspects of the store. In this talk, Uday reviews these developments as well as his own recent work on integrating the Reynolds model with parametricity to capture the fact that state changes of the store are irreversible. One way to understand these developments is to view them as a “parametric mathematical semantics” of programming languages.
