Jess Gillam meets violinist Tessa Lark to swap some of their favourite music. Tessa is an in-demand classical concert violinist but growing up in Kentucky, she's equally inspired by bluegrass music and American folk styles and so blends the two influences in a lot of her work. Traditional music features prominently in her music choices as the Martin Hayes Quartet and Swedish duo Vasen rub shoulders with a Beethoven Symphony. Meanwhile Jess brings along an orchestral tearjerker by Pietro Mascagni, a track by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and some retro soul vibes by Saun and Starr. Tom Service talks to composer Max Richter about his latest project, ‘The New Four Seasons', a new version of his critically acclaimed take on Vivaldi's piece, played this time on period instruments by Chineke! Orchestra and soloist Elena Urioste. Why period instruments and what new did he learn from the experience? We visit Welsh National Opera, in Cardiff, to see rehearsals for the epic production of Migrations, to open this month, exploring the good and bad of both humans' and birds' movements across centuries - from a slave in Bristol, to NHS doctors arriving from India, to the challenges refugees face today. Tom hears from composer Will Todd and some of the 6 librettists, among them Sir David Pountney, Eric Ngalle Charles, Shreya Sen-Handley and Miles Chambers. There's news of a concert next month called ‘Looking Forward: the Orchestral Music of Afghanistan', blending traditional folk instruments with Western instruments, featuring the Oxford Philharmonic and Afghan soloists. The repertoire includes new pieces by Afghan composers, in exile or still living in hiding. Tom talks to curators of this event, the conductor Cayenna Ponchione-Bailey and composer and conductor Arson Fahim, and also to two of the composers taking part: flute virtuoso Zalai Pakta, who's in Kabul, and Elaha Soroor, who lives in the UK. Vera Wolkowicz talks to Tom about her book Inca Music Reimagined, published this month, examining how South America looked to the ancient past, in the early 20th-Century, to rebuild national cultural identities, in a fascinating cultural process. We learn about the opposing approaches by two composers in Perú: Daniel Alomía Robles and José María Valle Riestra, and also how popular music appropriated this legacy.
A decade on from the release of his mesmerizing Recomposed album, trailblazing composer Max Richter returns to the sound world of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Recorded with violinist Elena Urioste and the musicians of Chineke! Orchestra, The New Four Seasons sees Richter create a new version of his Recomposed score for period instruments – using gut strings and vintage synthesizers to create a “grittier, more punk rock sound”.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Max Richter - Spring 1 (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! The Jukebox Album is the soundtrack to the feeling that characterises this period in time we're slowly coming out of, and perhaps a reminder that we should forget about either. A love letter from two musicians to their audience. A potent reminder of things previously taken for granted. A musical Ground Zero.
Elena Urioste is a musician, yogi, writer, and entrepreneur who has appeared as violin soloist with all the top orchestras in the U.S. — New York Philharmonic, LA Phil, Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras. She is the co-director of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective, which is an Associate Ensemble of London's prestigious Wigmore Hall. She is the co-founder of Intermission, a program that combines music, movement, and mindfulness, aiming to make music-making a healthier, more holistic practice for students and professionals alike through yoga and meditation. Our conversation highlights her vibrant energy from her multi-cultural background and how that infuses her everyday style. I particularly enjoyed hearing her travel recommendation to Germany's Schloss Elmau hotel and spa, which needs to be on everyone's dream hotel list. We explore how she expanded her career into yoga and started an organization that even has an app! Interestingly, she recounts her perspective on the importance of fulfillment and not just success. I found this emphasis to be quite profound. Finally, we conclude our chat with how her new studio album came to be — out of the depths of lockdown and building a large digital community around that shared experience. The album, #UriPosteJukeBox, features her husband, pianist Tom Poster, and will be released on the Orchid Classics label this September. -- Classical Post explores the intersection of classical music, style, and wellness, diving into meaningful conversations with leading artists from an array of different backgrounds. Based in New York City, Classical Post is a touchpoint for tastemakers. Visit our website for exclusive articles or subscribe to our monthly newsletter to be notified of new content.

Violinists & yoga instructors Melissa White & Elena Urioste share why they founded Intermission Sessions, a program uniting musicianship, movement & mindfulness that emphasizes individual focus on one's own physical & emotional needs. We discuss the impact of abusive or unsupportive teachers & methodologies in conservatory life that strip power from students instead of inspiring self-care and compassion. Elena & Melissa share their experiences of performance anxiety, how that has shifted in the pandemic, and the stigma surrounding injury in classical music. Lastly, they offer insight into what yoga and meditation has taught them about their own musical voices and mental health. www.intermissionsessions.com Questions or comments may be shared on Julia Adolphe's YouTube Channel
Tom Service hears from Ray Chen about the online videos he’s created during lockdown, which have attracted hundreds of thousands of followers, and Ray compares his ten million dollar Stradivarius with a $69 violin. We speak to the writer Stuart Clark about the ancient Greek theory that linked music with the stars, and his new book, Beneath the Night: How the Stars Have Shaped the History of Humankind. And, ahead of his performance as part of this autumn’s “Live from the Barbican” series, Orkney composer Erland Cooper reflects on the influence, in his music, of the islands' landscape and people. We also mark the centenary of the death of composer Max Bruch, with contributions from critic Wendy Thompson and violinists Tasmin Little, Elena Urioste and Jack Liebeck.
In this last episode of series 2, I was absolutely thrilled to talk to these two wonderful women who have accomplished so much, both individually as violinists and also together with their business "Intermission" which combines Yoga, breathing & mindfulness with Music. We had a fabulous chat about music education, the Benedetti Sessions and Melissa's Harlem String Quartet performing with the legendary Chick Corea and at the White House to President Obama. We also talked at length about race within the classical music world and how important it is for young people to see themselves represented on stage.I do hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did making it! Thanks for your continued support, be sure to subscribe wherever you normally listen so you don't miss series 3 as soon as it arrives in a few weeks time.Beth x

Temple University's Music Preparatory Division, or “Temple Music Prep” for short, is a program located in the heart of center city, Philadelphia, that provides high quality, non-credit music and dance instruction, and related activities to the Community on behalf of the Boyer College of Music and Dance, and Temple University at-large. World-renowned violinists Sarah Chang and Elena Urioste, as well as several members of the Philadelphia Orchestra share something in common: they were all participants of Temple Music Prep. I also started my own professional career right after graduating from Curtis as a theory teacher and chamber music coach at Temple Music Prep. To this day, I'm not sure who had more fun in my theory classes - the kids jumping up and down on the shaving cream staff lines I painted on the floor or the parents laughing outside my class! Anyway, I digress. This month, Temple Music Prep will be celebrating 30 years of excellence with a series of performances featuring students from their Center for Gifted Young Musicians, culminating in a gala concert on Saturday, May 13, 7:30 PM at the Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square. Before we visit some of the amazing students and teachers at Temple Music Prep, I want to point out that Temple Music Prep provides quality music and dance instruction to everyone at all ages and ability levels, from their early childhood and Suzuki programs to adult classes and community ensembles. In fact, some of the students we will listen to started participating at Temple Music Prep when they were toddlers themselves.
