Dry January is coming to a close, but David has one more NA beer to drink, and he goes with Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic. Gary tries something other than bourbon this week, as a listener was kind enough to provide him with some TX Blended Whiskey after he blind tasted TX Bourbon on Episode 118.Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic is one of the highest rated NA beers on Untappd, and David said that you know it's good if Deschutes is putting the name and reputation of their highest-selling beer on the label. It's a dark pour and holds up well to the original, which David tried on the show during Flagship February last year.TX Blended Whiskey has notes of vanilla, pear, and is slightly sweet on the nose. The palate is honey butter, banana, and caramel, and the finish is long and smooth with no burn. It won best American craft whiskey at the San Francisco World Sprits Competition in 2013.We also chat about this being a big weekend in the NFL with both of our teams having a shot to square off in the Super Bowl. Speaking of the Super Bowl, Anheuser-Busch is switching up its advertising plan this year, with commercials coming for Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, and Busch Light. Spirits will also be featured for the first time with Crown Royal and Remy Martin cognac.Craft breweries in Cincinnati are getting in on Ohio sports betting, as both Rhinegeist and Taft's have recently added sportsbook partners. Fireball is getting sued for selling mini bottles that don't contain whiskey. You can also watch the full episode of the podcast on YouTube.Make sure to visit Beers and Beards Podcast for a full list of our episodes.Use our NEW code “BeersBeards10” for 10% off at Rivalry Brews as well as 10% off at BeardOctane.com with code BeersBeards10.Support us and get a free trial of Amazon Music by heading over to www.getamazonmusic.com/beersandbeards. Check out our full list of Craft Beer Reviews and Bourbon Reviews on our website. Flagship February is a yearly opportunity to revisit some craft beer classics. These are the beers that keep the lights on for their respective breweries. They often reflect the period of craft beer history during which they were conceived. Some of these are relatively new flagship beers, while others have been going strong for decades. Flagship February started as a viral tweet and has grown into one of Roger's favorite times of year. These beers are classics for a reason, and they're also great examples of their style. If you're serious about beer, you need to know them. It’s been a long-time coming. We finally make it out to record at one of Pennsylvania’s oldest and best known craft breweries, Stoudts Brewing Company in Adamstown. With founder, brewer and pioneer Carol Stoudt, along with Event Coordinator and master-of-breads-and-cheese, Elizabeth Stoudt, we talked about the long and storied history of this landmark establishment. We also discussed the importance of the seemingly fading concept of flagship beers and “Flagship February”, an initiative to celebrate and rekindle the love for mainstay brews. Plus, a sneak peek at upcoming beers, packaging, and other plans for the Stoudts complex. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne hosted a round of There’s Weird in My Beer. And Steph talked about the English Bitter and ESB styles in Know Your Beers. All while enjoying a buffet of beautiful brews. Want to hear Carol Stoudt talk about mowing down emus with a machine gun? Today's guest is Jay Brooks, the well-known beer writer who is also one of the organizers of SF Beer Week. Jay Brooks has been writing about beer for nearly 30 years, based in the Bay Area. He is a co-founder of SF Beer Week and writes a syndicated newspaper column. Wade and Sean from Olver’s Market are also coming in today. Jay talks about his new initiative called Flagship February, to shine a light on “the beers that got us here.” With all the new beers around, it’s a chance to pause and consider the classics, like Anchor Beer. By flagship beer he means the beer that defines a brewery like Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale, Stone’s Arrogant Bastard, Firestone DBA and others. Anchor Steam Beer is one of those. Every day there are well-known writers, including Tara Nurin, who will write an article about their first experience with one of those flagship beers. Today is the 5th anniversary of Brew Ha Ha on the radio and the first anniversary of this podcast. Herlinda wanted to pair some cheeses with beer so she invited Wade and Sean from Oliver's Market.  They have Oliver's first private label beer. They have begun with one and will add a stout and a lager in the next few months. They also produce their own wine, so they wanted to have a local brew too.  Their goal was to appeal to all tastes. They brought four cheeses for the four beers. One classic Basque-style from France, a goat's milk Gouda, a locally produced washed-rind, which is Red Hawk from Cowgirl Creamery, and a blue cheese. They are also serving their spicy bar nuts that they serve in their tavern. "We take our cheese very very seriously!" This is SF Beer Week and reports are that crowds are large. It has exceeded Jay's wildest expectations. They struggled to get 100 events the first year and this year there are 800 or 900, all over the Bay Area. Next week Herlinda Heras will be in Bologna, Italy, as a judge in the Italian "Beer of the Year" competition (called "Birra dell'anno" in Italian).

Welcome to the GBH Collective, a special series of interviews where we have the chance to dive a little deeper with Good Beer Hunting contributors and friends on topics of writing, beer and the stories you read and hear from GBH. Today’s episode is one of those great conversations you don’t want to end, when you’re talking with someone talented and uniquely good at what they do. You’ll see by the timestamp that there is, in fact, a stop time to my chat with Kate Bernot, but I can only hope you get the same kind of impression. Kate has a long background in journalism, but beer fans may recognize her byline from DRAFT magazine, where she served as associate editor and then beer editor over several years, or her current role as associate editor at The Takeout, a food and beverage site from the A.V. Club.  Kate’s approach to her writing brings a variety of humor and skilled nuance, depending on what she’s writing about that day, from dealing with frozen beers to daily topics impacting the beer industry. It just so happens that we both recently covered the idea of Flagship February, and you’ll hear a chunk of this conversation dissecting what that effort means and the story behind her story written for The Takeout asking if beer loyalty is dead. There’s plenty more, including her thoughts on drinking beer in her new home state of Montana. This is Kate Bernot, writer, reporter, and advocate for Big Sky Country’s flagship brands. Listen in.

Jess joined us way back in Episode 22 (!), and he is now working with the venerable NC brewing pioneer Highland Brewing! He shares all the latest from Asheville and brings terrific taste treats to try with us: AVL IPA, Cold Mountain Spiced Ale, and Barrel-Aged Black Watch Stout! There is already so much craftbeer news we had to cull a lot for this week! We begin with The New York Times reporting that craft beer is looking beyond ‘Young White Dudes With Beards’, followed by The Wall Street Journal’s scary piece revealing that Walgreens is testing digital cooler doors with cameras to target you with ads! Next up The Daily Mail reiterates that beer should be chilled and consumed as soon as possible because it loses its unique aroma when stored for too long, and then The Motley Fool ventures their opinion on whether or not craft beer is still worth investing in. We wind down the week with KNSD 7 (San Diego) showing us pot-infused craft beer hitting San Diego shelves and Forbes (thanks @skeeordie11!) with the cool new hashtag #FlagshipFebruary, which aims to save core craft beer brands before they disappear! Last week we wondered  “what are your big beer predictions for 2019?” This week we are asking “what do you think of #FlagshipFebruary? Will you join in? What brewery/flagships will you be supporting?” We so love hearing from you! Please send in feedback and beer suggestions by calling us at (919) 502-0280, Tweeting us, following our Instagram or friending us on Untappd, posting on and liking our Facebook page, or emailing us! And please rate & review us in iTunes or Stitcher if you haven’t done so!

Pete Foppiano is sitting in for Steve Jaxon this week, with Mark Carpenter and Herlinda Heras. Brad Calkins is here, from Visit Santa Rosa. He is the executive director, or "chief eating and drinking officer." They are doing a Beer Passport in February as part of their FeBREWary celebration. The breweries, Moonlight, Plow, Cooperage and Fog Belt will be running a shuttle, picking up people at the Smart Train and then taking them around the breweries. This is their third year of the Beer Passport promotion. Brad has brought a commemorative medal that people can earn by visiting 9 of the 12 breweries on the list.  They are all Santa Rosa breweries. The Passport looks like a map and can be stamped at any of the participating breweries. There is a welcome center in Railroad Square. This is a tie-in with SF Beer Week, which Visit Santa Rosa also sponsors. Then, Santa Rosa Beer Passport runs for the rest of February. Pete Foppiano talks about how the president's government shutdown has affected the brewing industry. The breweries can't get the TTB to approve their labels. Mark explains that if you want to sell beer across state lines, you need to comply with federal law (but not if you are making and selling only inside your state). The lack of government operations means that the summer brews will be delayed. SF Beer Week has something like 1000 events going on. Santa Rosa brewers are adding events to SF Beer Week. The first two weeks of February will also see the release of Pliny the Elder at Russian River Brewing Co. They get a visit from Seismic Brewing with a growler of their American Robust Porter. Bittersweet cocoa and toasty coffee flavors abound. Mark Carpenter says that oysters are the classic pairing with this beer. You can get your Beer Passport at any of the participating breweries and at their Santa Rosa Welcome Center. Mark mentions that he had an excellent beer called Drake's 1500, at Nick's Cove. Herlinda also mentions Flagship February, a celebration of the breweries that started it all, like Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.
