Fogbelt Brewing Company owner Paul Hawley is here along with Native American brewer Pedro Mancilla to tell about the return of Red Tail Ale. Hawley, co-founder of Fogbelt Brewing Company is here along with Native American brewer Pedro Mancilla to talk about bringing back Red Tail Ale. Fogbelt is making some of Mendocino Brewing's classic Red Tail Ale. This was the most famous brew early in the craft brewing movement. In the 1980s it was one of the leading new beers. Fogbelt Paul tells how he and Remy Martin started the brewery in 2013 after home brewing for a time. Remy studied brewing at UC Davis. They opened their brewpub on Cleveland Ave in Santa Rosa in 2014, then outgrew that space. They moved production to an offsite warehouse. Then in 2022 they opened the Healdsburg Beer Garden in the red caboose. Pedro Mancilla introduces himself. He is the brewer at Fogbelt Brewing company. He has Native American Ancestors and shares “I am of you and you are of me” in his native language. The Red Tail Hawk in a symbol of wisdom, protection and care for the land. The Red Tail Ale project is more than a beer, it is a celebration of his connection to his heritage. Don Barkley developed the recipe back then for Mendocino Brewing and now he has given the recipe to Fogbelt. Herlinda met Pedro when they were at an event at Anchor Brewing, where Pedro used to work. He was working there and had access to Fritz Maytag's extensive library of books about brewing. She saw him reading a book that was about brewing at that event, so she asked him about it. The owner of Chobani yogurt has purchased Anchor Brewing and its assets, so there are good propects for a return of Anchor Steam and Liberty Ale. There were several other “bird beers” that Mendocino Brewing made. Fogbelt has started with Red Tail Ale but they also plan to bring the others back. These include Eye of the Hawk, Talon, White Hawk, Black Hawk, Blue Heron and Peregrine. Right now, Red Tail Ale is available at the big local retailers, such as Oliver's, Tip Top, Wilibees, Bottle Barn and others. Fogbelt has the distribution rights so they are in charge of that. Cascade and Cluster hops, caramel malt for the amber red hue and the taste as well. Herlinda judges it “delicious.”

Over the years, I gained invaluable experience working with renowned brands such as Maurice Malone, P-H-A-T Farm, and others before launching my own brand, Pure Players, in the late 90s and early 2000s. I went on to establish 1020 Blues and secured licensing deals with major companies like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Remy Martin, and Nayak. I also developed TRPL, a brand deeply connected to the hip-hop scene, collaborating with many prominent rappers. My career has taken me across the globe, including eight years in China. Where I focused on footwear and clothing manufacturing. For the past four years, I've been based in Vietnam, where we're expanding our operations. We're planning to open facilities and freestanding retail shops that not only offer apparel but also contribute to re-gentrifying local neighborhoods. Our most recent and exciting venture is the launch of Soul Alley, a brand that embodies the fusion of cultures and the spirit of innovation that has driven my career. I'm using myself as a guinea pig to that, because I came from Brooklyn. Grew up in the 90s. I lived in Vietnam, China, Korea, several other places and countries. If you asked 100 people, they would have told you that this wasn't supposed to happen. So the journey, the destination is unknown. The journey is fucking dope. I'm staying on it, rocking it until the wheels fall off. You know, life is good. Life is good.

Chinese consumers may face higher prices for European brandies due to new provisional tariffs imposed by the government, ranging from 30.6% to 39%, effective Friday. This development follows the European Union's approval of duties on Chinese electric vehicles. The tariffs aim to strengthen China's position in trade negotiations with the EU concerning the upcoming EV duties. Authorities based the tariffs on a preliminary investigation that revealed European brandy was sold at unfair prices in China, affecting local producers. The investigation mainly targets French cognac and similar spirits as part of a broader anti-dumping review of various European products amidst an ongoing EU inquiry into Chinese EV exports. France supports the EU's stance on Chinese EVs, while Germany raises concerns about impacts on its automakers in China. Additionally, China may increase tariffs on imported cars with larger engines. Tariffs vary by brand; for example, Martell faces a 30.6% tariff, Remy Martin a 38.1% tariff, and Hennessey a 39% tariff, affecting multiple brands including those from Spain. Notably, during a state visit in May, French President Emmanuel Macron presented two bottles of cognac to Chinese leader Xi Jinping.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/ Hosted on Acast. Fogbelt Brewing founders Paul Hawley and Remy Martin are back on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. Paul and Remy have been on Brew Ha Ha several times, including this episode last September and this other episode the previous August. This is a busy time for beer fans with the FeBrewary promotion and Beer City all taking place. For Beer Week, Fogbelt Brewing is making Bacon and Beer pairings. It's as classic as pizza and beer. They serve what they call “Billionaire's Bacon” and also Salmon belly, served with a flight of beers. Their annual Godwood Triple IPA has just been released. It is made with Simcoe, Mosaic, Aurora and Eldorado hops, all of them. They do three separate dry hops and a touch of caramel malt. Visit Homerun Pizza, home of the Knuckleball! Fresh pizza dough made from scratch daily, la pizza è deliziosa! Ten Years of Fogbelt and Brew Ha Ha Paul and Remy just celebrated their tenth anniversary and so did the Brew Ha Ha. They went to school together and studied moviemaking, then moved to New Zealand and ended up working for a winery and making their own beer on the side. Continuing to Australia they “became passionate” about beer. Remy studied beer and Paul studied finance and the new team was ready. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. The Fogbelt location in Healdsburg is a beer garden which is also in an old train, just like Wine Country Radio. Fogbelt Brewing Co. is located at 1305 Cleveland Ave. in Santa Rosa. The Beer City Festival in Santa Rosa Courthouse Square is on February 24. There are three races, half marathon, 10 K and 5 K, which are optional. Next week the organizers will be in the studio on Brew Ha Ha. Herlinda went to the SF Beer Week gala. It was advertised as a “space” theme, including Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. Herlinda was the only person in the gala in costume. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Fogbelt is proud to be making a lot of different beers, something for everybody. Their Redwood Lager won a Gold Medal at the Sacramento State Fair. Fogbelt also organized a Beer Camp, an adult summer camp with lots of beer. They hosted it at Wildhaven in Healdsburg, which is a glamping resort. They had a few classes in search and rescue, cooking demos, a falconry demo, and most of it was all about beer. Paul's dad is a falconer and taught a class about it.

Hear about travel to the Charente region of southwest France as the Amateur Traveler talks to Kylie Lang from LifeInRuralFrance.com about her adopted home. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-the-charente-region-of-france/ The Charente region, part of Nouvelle Aquitaine in southwest France, is known for its charming sunflower fields, historical chateaux, and rich history. Visitors to the Charente can explore picturesque vineyards, taste world-renowned cognac, and indulge in fresh oysters. The region hosts daily markets offering fresh produce throughout the year, providing an authentic taste of French life. Its quaint villages appear almost frozen in time, creating a sense of stepping back to the 15th century. Eleanor of Aquitaine, a prominent historical figure, played a significant role in this region. She was the only woman to be queen of two countries, France and England. The Charente, which was under English rule for about 300 years, now has a diverse community of English-speaking expatriates. Angoulême, one of the notable towns in the Poitou Charente region, sits on a hill with ancient roots dating back to Roman times. The city is also known as the European capital of comics, hosting an International Comic Festival annually. It features impressive murals and a well-known automobile race. Kylie suggests exploring the Hotel de Ville, which offers insightful tours about its history, and walking the city's ramparts. Angoulême's strategic location allows easy access to Bordeaux, which is just under 90 minutes away. Bordeaux, often referred to as the capital of wine in France, provides a great day trip opportunity. Visitors can explore the Cité du Vin, a modern wine museum offering immersive experiences and a panoramic view of Bordeaux. She also recommends the unusual Bassins des Lumières which is a digital art museum in an old German submarine base. Cognac, another jewel in the Charente's crown, is renowned for its historical significance and world-famous cognac houses such as Hennessy, Martell, and Remy Martin. Kylie recommends the Hennessy tour, a three-hour experience that delves into the cognac-making process, and a river cruise to witness the scenic beauty of the region. The Chateau Royal de Cognac, built in the 11th century, offers historical insights and a glimpse into the past. Cognac also hosts events like the Blues Festival, attracting big-name musicians and creating a vibrant atmosphere. Moving toward La Rochelle, it was a significant port and stronghold for the Knights Templar and later for the Huguenots. The city is known as the "jewel of the Atlantic coast" and offers historic sites like the towers of Saint Nicolas and La Chaîne. La Rochelle has a vibrant maritime history that influences its present identity as a popular tourist destination. The islands of Île de Ré and Île d'Oléron, connected by bridges, are known for their oyster and salt beds. These islands have stunning beaches, making them perfect destinations for beach lovers. Kylie mentions the Battle of Tours, a pivotal event during the Middle Ages which happened outside Poitiers. Poitiers also has connections with Eleanor of Aquitaine and offers historical sites such as the Palace du Duc, which is now the local courts. Futuroscope, located near Poitiers, is a digital theme park that offers a unique and futuristic experience. It is home to various thrilling rides and attractions. Additionally, the Valley of the Monkeys (Vallée des Singes) near Poitiers is a 44-hectare reserve where monkeys roam freely. The park offers an up-close experience with various monkeys and primate species. Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne is a picturesque village with a fascinating monolithic church known as the Eglise Saint-Jean. The church, carved into a limestone cliff, showcases remarkable ancient craftsmanship. The village is classified as one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France," recognizing its scenic beauty and historical significance. Kylie recommends a visit to La Rochefoucauld Chateau, a historic chateau open to the public. The chateau has a rich history, and the La Rochefoucauld family was closely connected to royalty and was involved in World War II resistance. The chateau features a spiral staircase, said to be designed by Leonardo da Vinci. When you are eating in a local restaurant, try a "plat de jour" for a value-packed meal. Also, try the local goat's cheese which is a specialty of the Charente and an unexpected bonus from the Battle of Tours. In addition to trying Cognac, she also recommends Pinot de Charente, a fortified wine in the region, which is akin to port or sherry. Kylie encourages visitors to explore the stunning landscapes of sunflower fields and enjoy cognac, pinot, and the unique atmosphere of line dancing.
On this rant session, the Ring Gang crew going in on a few topics as only we can do it!!!
Paul Hawley and Remy Martin, co-founders of Fogbelt Brewing Co. along with Fogbelt Brewing Co. Head Brewer J.P. Bellotti are our guests on Brew Ha Ha, with Peter Lopez sitting in for Herlinda Heras. Remy and Paul were last on Brew Ha Ha on this episode of August 18, 2022 to tell the Fogbelt story as of then. Peter Lopez brought some Calzones from Santa Rosa Pizzeria, which he promised to Steve Jaxon the last time he was here with his partner Ignacio Ruiz. Remy, Paul and J.P. brought a case of different Fogbelt beers, some Octoberfest, two West Coast IPAs, two Hazies and their flagship lager. Fogbelt has five wet hop beers, brewed with fresh hops harvested and used immediately. Wet Hopped Beer They use hops from local hop farmers, to support them. They like to make as many of these beers as they can, because they happen only in hop harvest season. The comparison is to fresh herbs versus dried herbs in the kitchen. They taste Fogbelt Wet Hoptober, brewed with freshly picked hops from a local hop farm, Blossom and Bine. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Hop farming has made a comeback in Northern California. Paul helped start the Norcal Hop Growers Alliance, to help bring hop farming back to California. They also talk about Fogbelt Beer Camp at Wildhaven. It's like an adult summer camp, a new spin on the beer festival. Wildhaven is a “glamping” resort in Healdsburg on the Russian River, with canvas tents and firepits. They have a falconer, they teach wilderness survival, and there will be good beer and victuals. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Fogbelt also has a relatively new spot in Healdsburg that they opened about a year ago. To accommodate this, he moved to a large warehouse in Valenton and expanded his team of blacksmiths and metalworkers who combine traditional skills, and new technology.Atelier Steaven Richard has become famous for its artistic metalwork. Prestigious designs include a bespoke metal floor for the studio of Karl Lagerfeld, the elevator doors for the Hotel de Paris in Monaco, and a ‘Steaven Richard' limited edition bottle for Remy Martin. We started to interview him in front of his wall of gorgeous wall samples in a colourful array of textures, patinas and designs and then went through to the workshops. And we also tour his huge hangar-like workshop, which is buzzing with activity and the thrum of machinery.Enormous shelves hold sheets of carefully-labelled metals. There's large-scale equipment, and workers hand-finishing on long benches. It's artisans work on a grand-scale. We see some samples of his finished work.Mike Axinn and I took the train 50 km south of Paris, through the suburbs, to the dense wooded area of Bois le Roi, next to the forest of Fontainebleau. As the train slowed into the station, a bright blue sky is visible above the dense forest of wintry trees, and we see the lanky figure of Steaven waiting on the platform to greet us.steavenrichard.frinstagram.com/ateliersteavenrichard

Dry January is coming to a close, but David has one more NA beer to drink, and he goes with Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic. Gary tries something other than bourbon this week, as a listener was kind enough to provide him with some TX Blended Whiskey after he blind tasted TX Bourbon on Episode 118.Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic is one of the highest rated NA beers on Untappd, and David said that you know it's good if Deschutes is putting the name and reputation of their highest-selling beer on the label. It's a dark pour and holds up well to the original, which David tried on the show during Flagship February last year.TX Blended Whiskey has notes of vanilla, pear, and is slightly sweet on the nose. The palate is honey butter, banana, and caramel, and the finish is long and smooth with no burn. It won best American craft whiskey at the San Francisco World Sprits Competition in 2013.We also chat about this being a big weekend in the NFL with both of our teams having a shot to square off in the Super Bowl. Speaking of the Super Bowl, Anheuser-Busch is switching up its advertising plan this year, with commercials coming for Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, and Busch Light. For this Throwback Thursday, just after Father's Day, I knew I wanted to bring you this episode with my friend, an incredible father and podcaster at the While Black Podcast, Darius Hicks. This past week in the United States, in addition to Father's Day, we also acknowledged Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) an annual commemoration of the effective end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War. It came when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to ensure all those enslaved were freed, a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. It's considered the longest-running African American holiday and last year in 2021 became a federal holiday. For those of us who are not Black, Juneteenth is an opportunity to learn more about the history of slavery, to reflect on how much more is needed for Black people to be truly free in this country, and to recommit to antiracism. Just over a month since a white gunman killed 10 Black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, one of the deadliest racist massacres in recent U.S. history, this conversation with Darius is a necessary call to action to learn more and identify how we can be part of the change that is needed. Darius gifted us with exceptional insight, perspective, and vulnerability in this conversation. I'm honored to share it with you again. So join us in this episode as we celebrate amazing fathers all over the world! About Darius: Darius has always displayed an entrepreneurial and activist spirit. Since his youth, he has dedicated his time to those around him in hopes of bettering them while he better himself. It began by volunteering as a camp counselor from middle school through high school, and grew via mentorship and tutoring in college all the way to his membership role in the 100 Black Men and as an advocate for African Americans through his work on the While Black Podcast. Vince wholeheartedly believes James Baldwin's quote “To be Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be a rage almost all the time”. However, he chooses to channel that rage into a place that allows him to change the narrative on black folks while he helps to empower those same black folks. Earning his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Southern University A&M in Baton Rouge LA (1999) and his MBA from Queens University in Charlotte NC (2005), Vince has gained valuable experience in multiple industries. He has excelled in multiple industries and enjoyed a career spanning 20+ years with opportunities in Engineering, Consumer packaged goods, Corporate retail giants, and now the Social/tech industry. In addition, he is a successful entrepreneur and founder of Aveo Big and Tall Golf Apparel which rose to become the #1 big and tall golf apparel offering in Golfsmith stores and was distributed nationally and internationally via various outlets including but not limited to Dicks Sporting Good, GolfSmith, and Golf Galaxy. He has since sold the rights to the Aveo name and divested from the company. However, he has altered his focus by aligning his passions with his promise and ensuring his time is invested accordingly as he focuses on improving the black world and the global community through and with black people. His latest endeavor is laser-focused on impacting and improving the people around him. Specifically, he is the creator and co-host of the While Black Podcast a podcast focused on empowering, educating, and inspiring African Americans to go and grow. While Black tells stories by, from, and for African Americans and pairs those stories with expert and credible guests who can communicate wisdom and success strategies helping us to achieve, accomplish, and overcome. Connect with Darius: • Facebook: @whileblackpodcast • Instagram: @while_black • Twitter: @Whileblackpc Topics Discussed in this Episode: • The universal language and common connection among mothers of all races and how Darius and I both believe mothers will be critical to making change • Darius' quest to be authentically who he is as a 6'4, 300-pound dark-skinned Black man. How he has struggled to stand tall and shine while also consciously shrinking because people's first reaction to him is fear • The question about fatherhood Darius asks himself all the time…” How do I raise fearless children when I am a fearful parent?” • A heartbreaking but powerful “epic snapshot moment” with his son made Darius realize his words were getting through to him and that his son would be part of making change • How those committed to anti-racism and new to this can begin and the reason why Darius seeks “partnership” over saviorism or “help” • The three-fold challenge Darius gave us, including the specific movies that Darius thinks we should all watch to shift our understanding and perspective • How we all need each other to get free Resources Mentioned: • While Black Podcast • Ahmaud Arbery Is All of Us – Can I Live? • American Son|Netflix • When They See Us|Netflix • 13TH|Netflix • Ep 07: Living Out Loud with Jenjii Hysten • Revisited: Beyond the Trauma: Legacy, Compassion and Change with Mothers Against Police Brutality Co-Founder Sara Mokuria • Ep 55: From Grief to Advocacy and a Circle of Mothers with Trayvon Martin's mother Sybrina Fulton • Desiree Adaway and Diversity is an Asset • Podcast Movement • Justice for Josiah This Episode's Challenge: Darius gave us a threefold challenge: • There is bias inside all of us. We all have it. Try our very best to recognize when our unconscious bias fires. Try to pay attention every time we see or meet a Black person…if our initial intent is to walk in the other direction, stop for a moment and ask yourself why? • Meet someone new and be the first one to say hello and to really see the humanity in them. • Be more intentional in our actions and in whatever media we digest so that we are aware of what's really happening and what others are really going through. On today's episode, Jason kicks things off with a few thoughts on Bruce Arians' sudden retirement as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We're not going to say that Tom Brady is reason why Arians decided to step down... but it sure is a coincidence that Brady cut his own retirement short in the same offseason that the coach he's reportedly been at-odds with decided to move upstairs. It's hard to believe that Brady had nothing to do with this. Later, ESPN Basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla joins Jason for a lengthy college basketball conversation as we lead into this weekend's Final Four. In the interview, Fraschilla discusses why he's openly rooting for Villanova to cut down the nets in New Orleans, how Remy Martin's up-and-down season at Kansas has prepared him for tournament play, whether or not Nova is adequately prepared to handle Kansas' style of play, how North Carolina's incredible turnaround midway through the regular season that has carried over into the tournament, Caleb Love's incredible shooting during the past few games, why his early lean is on Duke to beat UNC in the trilogy match, why Duke superstar Paolo Banchero reminds him a bit of Carmelo Anthony coming out of college, why he currently has Auburn's Jabari Smith as the best player available in the upcoming NBA Draft, the notion that Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs are like the Buffalo Bills of college basketball, and much more!
