Everyone's got mom on the brain this week (rightfully so), which hopefully means you've already made plans to say thanks to that special person by treating her to some outstanding food. In case you haven't, we start this episode with three suggestion for where to take mom — if they're still taking reservations:Blackwolf Run in Kohler is offering a Mother's Day brunch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that includes salads, fruits, crudites, sausages, avocado toast, grilled citrus salmon, red wine braised chicken and pepper steak sauté, carving stations, omelet stations and desserts.Crafty Cow has you covered at all of their locations with some very cool-sounding fare. The cinnamon roll funnel cake jumps out, but there's also the "Mother of All Hangovers" (a burger with cheddar, jalapeno, fried eggs and chipotle aioli) and the "Mother's Morning Bowl" (waffled hash browns with smoked cheddar, Nashville fried chicken and chicken gravy).EsterEv opted for a different direction with high-tea service from 12:30 to 3 p.m. You'll find 10 menu items paired with offerings from Rishi Tea and served in ceramics crafted by Kate Riley. Breakfast cocktails will also be available. You'll hear a few decidedly global news items as well, led by the exciting news that SapSap has officially joined the regular food-truck lineup at Zócalo Food Park. SapSap will also take part in an upcoming event titled “Hidden Flavors of Asia” that's going down June 1 at Pilot Project Brewery, while a taste of the Mediterranean will soon find a home at the top of the world's tallest mass-timber building. If you're looking for something food to do a little sooner, The Cooperage will host Sashay & Souffle this Friday to benefit Midwest Sad. In addition to the culinary portion of the title, the drag-show fundraiser will include “show-stopping performances” and “fierce fundraising.” This weekend will also bring a new menu to Outlaw Oyster that features dishes like Octopus Aguachile Negro, Caviar & Hash Browns and something called an Octodog.

Herlinda with Dan and Celeste Hanes. Dan and Celeste Hanes from Cooperage Brewing Co., join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. The last time Cooperage was featured on BHH was when Nicholas aka The Fridge was our guest on this episode of May 25, 2023. Cooperage's new location is at 575 Ross St. in downtown Santa Rosa. This place is much larger than their other original one at 981 Airway Court also in Santa Rosa. They have pool, darts, pinball and other kid and dog friendly attractions and there is trivia on Mondays. There are also rotating food trucks outside as well as great beer. First, Herlinda reminds us of the February 22 Beer City Fest. You can sign up to run in the half marathon, or just come to celebrate and drink beer later. Also, the Santa Rosa Beer Passport promotion is going on. Cooperage is a big part of both Beer City and the Santa Rosa Beer Passport promotions. Their new location means they have enough space to throw a big party in the parking lot. So on March 22, they will be throwing a block party in the empty parking lot next door. They will have BBQ, burgers, several bands and local vendors, all at the new downtown location. Their name for it is the Coop Rage party, at least for now. They have a great following and the local community has supported them, so they are glad to be able to do this in their new downtown location. “We want to be part of the re-creation of downtown.” Tyler, Cooperage's brewer, started by working the taps at Whole Foods while people knew he was already brewing great beer by himself. Joe Tucker of RateBeer fame loved Cooperage and said it would be the next great American brewery. They brought three beers today. One is a pale dry ale, called the Crispy Crusher. It is an “affordable, approachable beer.” They keep the price low, $4 or $5 a pint, depending on what time of day. Every Saturday the free beer shuttle is a popular attraction in Santa Rosa. Their hours at the new downtown location are Monday – Thursday from 3:00 to 10:00 PM, Fridays and Saturdays Noon to Midnight, Sundays Noon to 7:00 PM. Their IG will tell you what food trucks are coming and when. Stella says the highlight of her day is to meet all the dogs that come to their dog-friendly locations. The Mexican wrestling is a great show. Next time is Saturday, May 3. The wrestling is a tournament with judges and a champion. Once, Dan's little son panicked because he saw his dad get body slammed and he “lost his marbles” as Mom tells the story. How do you say, “KAYFABE” in Spanish?

I'll be the first to say it, this one might not be for everyone. Today we talk about the Brown Forman Cooperage closure and the links to the FDA ruling for new warning labels on whiskey. THIS IS MY OPINION AND ONLY THAT. Hope that it opens your eyes a bit. Because it did mine. No sponsors on this one. I don t want my opinions to any way affect them. But Check out https://youtube.com/@mywhiskeyden?si=DvGDaZ-57wj06x9p January 14, 2025 Brown‑Forman Announces Series of Strategic Initiatives for Growth Company To Restructure Globally, Louisville Cooperage To Close LOUISVILLE, KY – Brown‑Forman Corporation (NYSE:BFA,BFB) announced today a series of strategic initiatives to position the company for continued growth in the dynamic global spirits market. These initiatives include restructuring the executive leadership team, implementing a workforce reduction affecting approximately 12% of the company's global workforce, and closing the Louisville-based Brown‑Forman Cooperage. “In 2025, Brown‑Forman celebrates 155 years of delivering Nothing Better in the Market. We have achieved this impressive milestone in part because of our relentless focus on evolving our strategy, our portfolio, and our organization to grow and thrive,” said Lawson Whiting, President & Chief Executive Officer. “Today's announcement will ensure we have the structure and teams in place to continue on this path, while also making investments that we believe will facilitate growth for generations to come.” Workforce Reduction To enhance operational efficiency and agility, Brown‑Forman has made the difficult decision to reduce its global workforce by approximately 12% of its 5,400 employees worldwide. Brown‑Forman is deeply committed to supporting departing employees with comprehensive transition agreements that include severance, outplacement services, and other benefits to help them through this career change. This organizational evolution will simplify and streamline Brown‑Forman's structure, allowing it to become a more agile and efficient organization and reinvest in the capabilities, technologies, brands, and people that will drive future growth. Brown‑Forman Cooperage Closure Brown‑Forman will close its Louisville-based barrel-making operation, Brown‑Forman Cooperage, by April 25, 2025. This closure, which will impact approximately 210 hourly and salaried employees, is part of the overall 12% workforce reduction. Brown‑Forman will offer severance, outplacement services, and benefits consistent with their terms of employment.  Moving forward, Brown‑Forman will source barrels from an external supplier to ensure a steady supply of the same high-quality barrels at a competitive price. Collectively, these actions are projected to deliver approximately $70 to $80 million in annualized cost savings, a portion of which is expected to be reinvested to accelerate growth. In addition, the company will receive more than $30 million in proceeds in connection with the sale of the cooperage assets. The company expects to incur approximately $60 to $70 million in aggregate charges for severance and related costs associated with the workforce reduction and cooperage closing.  Brown‑Forman.com. People often confuse bines and vines. Hops grow on bines, not vines, which grow vertically. The Barley and Bine Oktoberfest party is Saturday, September 28, from 2pm to 11pm. They have a large selection of beers, almost all are California-based breweries. Herlinda remembers that they have been through a lot since they opened the café seven years ago. They have survived fires and a pandemic. Now they are getting ready for their sixth year celebrating Oktoberfest. Their Oktoberfest party feature the Steve Balich Band which plays authentic German and Bavarian music. Herlinda suggests watching their social media for updates about special events, including appearances of special beers that have a cult following. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Oktoberfest Marzen means March which is Festbeer brewing time, so they are consumed in the fall. These are not necessarily high-alcohol beers. They are tasting one from Cooperage with is 5.7% ABV. Jeff and Lindsey have brought two items from their Oktoberfest menu. This will be their sixth year celebrating Oktoberfest. They will have 15 different beers on party day. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Barley and Bine makes a half-liter size beer stein, which is a German beer glass. Oktoberfest is also a chance for them to serve brats, which they do in great numbers. They also have 5 different kinds of mustard. They change the menu every month including lots of kinds of street tacos and tater tot nachos of all kinds. The soft pretzels are probably their #1 item. They also have a digital menu board that shows up-to-the-minute information about the beer including when the keg was tapped and how much beer is left in the keg.

She opened her restaurant about four years ago and survived the pandemic as the first order of business. It happened to be just as the pandemic was closing everyone down. She weathered the storm by being available for delivery at a time when that was the only way to get food to the people. The beer selection at Pizzaleah is important to Leah. She wants to support local brewers by featuring their products and also whenever possible she tries to support small local suppliers and organic production. The Lola pizza, with pesto, potato and caramelized onion, is paired with the Crispy Crusher from Cooperage.

Devised by the Celts and proliferated by the Romans, barrels have carried everything from water to fish to oil and whiskey in the last two millennia. They're (ideally) leak-free, can store things for long periods of time, and are easily moved by one person despite weighing hundreds of pounds. Today, we think of barrels almost exclusively in the realm of whiskey and spirits, but a far richer history is behind them. John Cox, founder and cooper at Quercus Cooperage in New York, learned cooperage the old-fashioned way, taking apart barrels from multiple other cooperages and putting them back together, studying the few texts available, and experimenting with 19th century tools he got from a museum in Canada.  This is truly a from-the-bootstraps story, and a fun one at that. John will also be leading a cooperage demonstration at Kings County Distillery on November 10th. If you can't make that one, follow Quercus Cooperage at the social links below for his next lecture and demonstration.  _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Tens of millions of borrowers in the U.S. collectively owe more than $1 trillion, can we really blame that kind of mountain of debt all on the personal responsibility of individuals making bad choices? Herlinda and Fridge Nickolas Garson, AKA Fridge, sales rep from Cooperage Brewing joins Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha. Cooperage is just about to celebrate 8 years as one of the premiere locations to get a beer in Santa Rosa. They are located on Airway Court between Piner and Hopper. Their family-friendly location is open seven days a week, Monday through Thursday from 2 to 8 pm, Friday and Saturday from noon to 11 pm and Sunday from noon to 8 pm. Their website and socials have the updated daily food truck schedule. They went out of their way to make the location comfortable and beautiful. The bar is a long redwood tree trunk. Cooperage's founder Tyler helped Nickolas get to know and to enjoy craft beer and that led to him working in the craft beer industry. Nicholas was inspired by his first taste of good craft beer back in the day. It may be hard to remember today, but at one time, average beer in America was not very good at all, with little or no attention to freshness or flavor. Well, we took care of that, didn't we? Visit our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Cooperage Brewing 8th Anniversary As part of their 8th anniversary, they have a band performing on June 10, Painted Waves, a local pop-rock band. The Coop Co-op is on the 11th with vendors and DJs. The anniversary party itself is Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th with a rock climbing wall, face painters and mechanical bull riding. The vendors include vintage clothes and shoes and they are adding more and more to the list. It is a nice opportunity to help small local businesses. They have beer and yoga sessions. The price includes a beer after yoga. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. They have been tasting Lazy Cat lager, which was originally a staff collaboration. The name is based on their brewery cat named Beyonce. It is made with Luminosa hops, which has no pine or resin character. It has a tiny citrus undertone. They are also tasting the Mexican lager. Nicholas brought Trimcoe, a new West Coast IPA. Cooperage Brewing beers are available in grocery stores as well as restaurants and bars all around Sonoma County.

This week's guest is Mark Waldoch, a Milwaukee mainstay who has been a prominent part of the city's music scene for more than 25 years. Over that quarter-century span, the multi-instrumentalist and owner of Brew City's most booming voice has released outstanding material with The Celebrated Workingman, under his own name and with his current Hallelujah Ward project. Along the way, he's contributed harmonies and horns to a wide variety of songs by other local musicians and he's been relied upon to be a go-to local opener for an incredible list of touring acts coming through town. Oh, and he's also a major part of Milwaukee's holiday music tradition with an array of Christmastime concerts most years. Earlier this week, Waldoch made a long-overdue stop (our bad!) at the My First Band studio, where he talked to host Tyler Maas about all of the above, as well as his upcoming yuletide show at The Cooperage, his amazing and arduous life story, and many memories from his lengthy tenure in the local scene. As Waldoch looked back on his artistic origin, he also treated listeners to anecdotes about touring the U.S. and Europe with Volcano Choir, working at the iconic Atomic Records store, and playing with the likes of Bright Eyes and Interpol before they became worldwide sensations. There's also an incredible and cathartic tale about the time he quit a particularly bad service industry job! My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. This week's show is about the essential art of cooperage, or barrel making. Aussie winemaker and current US National Sales Manager for Tonnellerie Radoux, Craig Holme, takes us through how barrels are made, from forest to cellar. We discuss sustainability (Hint: the issue isn't the barrels or the trees, it's the fact that they come on container ships fully assembled, as winemakers order. Hello, carbon footprint!), how different regions look at barrels, and how barrels are a very personal thing to a winemaker. A cool look inside of an essential part of wine!     Thanks to the Patrons for their insightful questions that augmented the show! To join Patreon, click here.    Here are the show notes: 1. Craig tells us briefly about his early life in Mount Benson, South Australia where his family farmed Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. He discusses how he worked in the wine industry, working harvests around the world, and then becoming a winemaker himself. For 10 years, Craig and his wife owned a small wine brand, called Holme Estate Cellars, which specialized in Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz sourced from their family vineyards in Australia. They also bought Zinfandel and Chardonnay from California. He moved into barrels about 10 years ago.   2. We discuss the process of barrel making: Forests -- Troncais, Limousin, Atelier, and American and Hungarian wood The age and requirements for a tree to make barrels (only 2-3 barrels come out of each tree. You read that right). We discuss the French laws and a bit about forestry management Radoux's proprietary tannin scanning method -- Oakscan Splitting wood Seasoning wood -- what it accomplishes, where it's done, the terroir of seasoning Toasting oak -- the process, toast levels available, how toasting is done, and the most popular toasts Radoux's wood, fresh from the forest 3. We discuss the size and shape of the barrel and why it matters (Bordeaux is 225L, Burgundy is 228 L, we explain why they are different and the other common options for barrel size)   One of Radoux's yard for seasoning the staves  4. I become just slightly obsessed with the elephant in the room -- It is completely wasteful for barrels to be assembled in France or Missouri or Eastern Europe and shipped to California, Washington, etc. It's not the fault of the barrel makers, but the expectations of the winemakers. Craig tells us where winemakers are about shipping air thousands of miles, and wasting space in cargo ships, rail and trucks (the coopers are businesses, they are fulfilling orders, it's the winemakers that are mainly at fault here for not demanding assembly close to home).      5. We discuss how winemakers pick barrels and what the choices could lead to in the wine.  Fire shapes and bends the barrels, then toasts them   6. Finally we end with some trends and the fact that oak is awesome, and it's an essential part of wine.    Thanks to Radoux and Craig Holme for joining the show!       All photos from https://www.tonnellerieradoux.com/ ____________________________________________________________________
