MadTree Brewing Company is certainly a household name here in Cincinnati. They make great beer, they have a killer taproom, and they provide an excellent company that is able to create a place where people can build their careers. When you look at it from the outside in, they nailed it. It's not enough for the company, though, as it rounds the ten year mark. They're constantly trying to improve everything. The very essence of who they are to their core has been a huge focus over the last few years - and I wanted to talk about what that means.

In a big move for a brewery that's relied on a great food partner for ten years - MadTree made a lot of waves this month when they announced that they'd be bringing their food program under their own MadTree banner starting next year. While I'm still working on a BIG blog post to talk all about my thoughts on the changing world of food inside of our craft breweries - I couldn't resist the urge to head out to MadTree to sit down and chat about how they feel about it, as well as what we can expect when they roll out their new food program next spring.
After a long season, with 35 different packaged Oktoberfest beers battling it out to see who is the best this year... we're finally there. The finals were recorded live at MadTree Brewing Company (last year's winners), and it was a really, really tough decision. The decision was so difficult that I had to call on help from Marco and Julia from Truth, Beer, Podsequences to help me judge - AND had to get help from DIPA Josh to make sure that the contest was all on the up and up by helping us with the pouring. In the end, though, as always - there could be only one winner, and this year Sonder took home the Golden Gnome as the first-ever double-winner of the contest. It was fun, it was chaotic... it was a good episode! Enjoy! When Brady Duncan and Kenny McNutt founded MadTree Brewing Co. in 2013, the craft beer boom was just getting started. A few years later, MadTree was one of the biggest craft breweries in Ohio, but Brady started to feel like it was just like any of the other thousands of operations across the country. On episode 112, Brady tells us about his resetting process, how to create a values-led organization, and discusses the hardest part of any job: the people. Like every business, MadTree has been thrown some curveballs by the pandemic, but it's poised to grow in new ways in 2022, including the opening of Alcove. We jump back to a special moment in our Charlie Tonic / Bottoms Up history. In episode #14 of this very show, we sat down with a brewery that was just beginning to make a real name for itself in the city; MadTree Brewing. They were 18 months into their life as a company back in 2013 and this interview provided an amazing glimpse at three guys who stood just on the verge of something incredible. As we wrote in the show notes at the time... "A local brewery that makes some great beer is one thing. A local brewery that makes some great beer AND has a taproom that feels like an extension of your backyard, where you can hang out, play corn hole, and get some great food from the food truck parked outside is another. MadTree Brewing has been selling beer for less than 18 months and they have managed to achieve both of these things. This week Ginny and Charlie sit down with the three owners of MadTree to talk beer, business, and how to win over investors. You won't want to miss it!" As they recently celebrate their five year anniversary, we thought it was a perfect time to invite you to the bar for a re-listen of this conversation!
This week the action (and adventures) build as the stories flow from good friends leaving us to a night of celebrations. Along the way, a bourbon is tasted and a classic 80s band is featured. We did so much this week, we almost didn't make it to the show!
Tis the season for pumpkin flavored everything luckily for us, that includes beer. This week Ginny and Charlie sample five different pumpkin beers, Rivertown Brewing's Pumpkin Ale, Madtree Brewing's PumpCan, KBC's Pumpkin Ale, Dogfish Head's Pumkin, and Shipyard's Smashed Pumpkin. The colors, tastes, tastes and styles ranged quite a bit but in the end Ginny and Charlie have to pick their favorites. Download to find out the winners.
We're back with a new, full episode of the Charlie Tonic Hour as we catch you up on all the latest happenings around Cincinnati as experienced first hand by Ginny Tonic and Charlie. Once we move beyond the social scene, Ginny steps back in history to a world of bootleggers and bourbon as she unveils a historical theory that ties together no less that the survival of bourbon itself. From there Charlie starts with Big Brother, passes by making money on the internet and ends with the state of journalism today. Closing out these two sample a fine bourbon and a Wilbury is found. Grab a cocktail and join us! The Charlie Tonic Hour is underway once again.
After a busy week filled with stories, we're feeling the pull to talk tech as both of our main discussion segments play around with the concept of tech in our lives. First, we look at the emotional impact of things like Facebook and Instagram then turn our attention to a Twitter assault in the news. How does Jane Austin and a July Christmas come into the discussion? Where does Lucinda Williams and Molly Wellman fit into this equation? You'll just have to listen and learn.
After a very unexpected episode last week due to the death of Charlie's step-father, we're back with the episode that was originally set to run on that Wednesday. It's filled with animated series, cartoons, stories, music and even a Batman themed cocktail. Join us as we begin the quest to catch back up with ourselves for next week's show!
