Clare's Government TD believes a general election is needed as soon as possible to ensure the people of this county have adequate representation in Dáil Eireann. Following Fine Gael Deputy Joe Carey's decision to retire from politics this week, just two of Clare's TD's remain in office. Under Article 16.2.2 of Bunreacht na hEireann, there must be at least one TD for every 30,000 people in a constituency. But following Michael McNamara's election to the European Parliament in June and Deputy Joe Carey's decision to resign from public office on medical grounds, Clare now has just one TD for every 64,000 people. Although a date has not been set for the impending general election, it's widely expected the Government will go to the polls after the budget. Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe, who's now Clare's only government representative in the Dáil, believes it's in the best interest of the public for the next election to be held in the coming months, rather than a string of bye-elections. The Clare branches of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will both be holding their selection conventions in the coming weeks. At the close of nominations, Doonbeg Councillor Rita McInerney, Tulla based Senator and former TD Timmy Dooley and sitting Deputy Cathal Crowe have thrown their hats in the ring. While for Fine Gael, Ennistymon Senator Martin Conway and Leonora Carey, the sister of Joe Carey are the only candidates to declare an expression of interest to represent the party in the upcoming general election. A former Clare Fine Gael TD admits it's concerning the party will not have a contest at their upcoming convention and that it will not have representatives covering the West and East of the county. Fine Gael has not returned two seats in Clare since 2016, and while former Minister of State Pat Breen acknowledges it will be an uphill battle to do so this time round, he's hopeful the "Simon Harris Hop" will benefit his colleagues. Clare's newest General Election candidate meanwhile insists opening the Ennis Medical Assessment Unit on a 24/7 basis will be among her chief priorities. Following her brother Joe's resignation this week, 16 of Fine Gael's 35 TD's elected in 2020 won't now be running in the next election. Clarecastle native, Leonora Carey, who is currently an Occupational Therapist Manager with the UL Hospitals Group, believes a fresh approach is needed to the challenges of the day and says addressing local service deficits is vital.

Tá daoine á mbáthadh ag gach tráth den bhliain ar muir agus ar bhealaí uisce, agus 118 báite ó 2019-2023 a deir an eagraíocht sa tuarascáil úr. 70% of them were men and boys and more than half of the total were middle-aged, between 40 and 69 years old. "Tá tuiscint níos mó ar an gcontúirt ag daoine" a deir Joanne Walsh, Príomhfheidhmeannach Shábháilteacht Uisce na hÉireann. "The share of the number who drown while swimming or diving is decreasing" she says "and the figure is now 25% of the total." "Tá an sciar den líon a báthadh agus iad ag snámh nó ag tumadh ag laghdú" a deir sí "agus an figiúr anois ag 25 faoin gcéad den iomlán." Joanne Walsh stated that 60% of the number of people who drown by accident are related to "events on land, such as people walking a cliff or hiking or hunting." Luaigh Joanne Walsh go mbaineann 60 faoin gcéad den líon daoine a báthadh tré thimpiste le "imeachtaí ar tír, ar nós daoine ag siúl aille nó ag siúlóireacht nó ag sealgaireacht." They will now focus more, she says, on the danger associated with such actions. Beidh siad feasta ag díriú tuilleadh a deir sí ar an gcontúirt a bhaineann le gníomhartha den chineál sin. She urged people to remember the acronym "SAFE - Stay away from edges." D'ímpigh sí ar dhaoine cuimhniú ar an acrainm "SAFE - Stay away from edges." "You could be out walking in the summer when there is a lot of growth and you might not see the edge of the river, or the lake. "D'fhéadfá a bheith amuigh ag siúl sa samhradh nuair atá fás mór déanta agus b'fhéidir nach bhfeicfeá ciumhais na habhann, nó na locha. And in winter, although it is bare, the edge is not as strong as the ground could give it. Agus sa ngeimhreadh, cé go bhfuil sé lom feannta, níl an chiumhais chomh láidir agus d'fhéadfadh an talamh tabhairt uaidh. You have to be careful, and always remember SAFE - Stay away from edges." Ní mór a bheith ar aire, agus cuimhnigh i gcónaí ar SAFE - Stay away from edges."

Rabhadh eisithe ag Banc na hÉireann faoi chamscéim nua. The Bank of Ireland has issued a warning regarding a new scam in which fraudsters lure customers into giving them remote access to their bank accounts. Tá rabhadh eisithe ag Banc na hÉireann maidir le camscéim nua ina meallann caimiléirí custaiméirí le cianrochtain a thabhairt dóibh ar a gcuntais bainc. The scam begins when a customer receives a call from someone claiming to be working for Bank of Ireland, who asks the customer to log into their online account. Tosaíonn an chamscéim nuair a fhaigheann custaiméir glaoch ó dhuine a mhaíonn gur le Banc na hÉireann atá sé ag obair, agus iarrann sé ar an chustaiméir logáil isteach ina gcuntas ar líne. The scammer then asks the customer to go to a new website address, either to start a text conversation or to check their computer's security, but it turns out that the scammer gains remote access to the customer's bank account. Iarrann an caimiléir ar an chustaiméir ansin dul chuig seoladh nua suímh idirlín, mar dhea le comhrá téacs a thosú nó le slándáil a ríomhaire a sheiceáil, ach tarlaíonn sé go bhfaigheann an caimiléir cianrochtain ar chuntas bainc an chustaiméara. Bank of Ireland is advising customers to end the call if someone asks them to go to a website or click on a link sent to them. Tá Banc na hÉireann ag comhairliú do chustaiméirí deireadh a chur leis an ghlao má iarrann duine orthu dul chuig suíomh idirlín nó cliceáil ar nasc a sheoltar chucu. The fraudsters are mainly targeting the Bank's business customers and the number of reports of scams seems to be increasing every day. Is ar chustaiméirí gnó is mó de chuid an Bhainc atá na caimiléirí ag díriú agus is cosúil go bhfuil méadú in aghaidh an lae ag teacht ar an líon tuairiscí faoi chamscéimeanna.

Gan ach dhá long chabhlaigh ag coimhéad imeallbhord na hÉireann. It has come to light that only two naval ships out of eight on patrol around the Irish seaboard are currently undermanned. Tá sé tagtha chun solais nach bhfuil ach dhá long chabhlaigh as ocht gcinn ar patról thart ar bhorda na hÉireann faoi láthair de cheal foirne. In a statement, the Naval Service confirmed that at the moment only those two ships are operating and that the third one is on standby. I ráiteas, dhearbhaigh an tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh nach bhfuil ag feidhmiú i láthair na huaire ach an dá long úd agus go bhfuil an tríú ceann ar fuireachas. The statement confirmed that this is how things will be from now until the end of the year because there are not enough human resources. Deimhníodh sa ráiteas gur mar sin a bheas cúrsaí as seo go deireadh na bliana mar nach bhfuil dóthain acmhainní daonna ann. It was pointed out that many people have left the Naval Service and that management is trying to recruit people with the appropriate credentials to replace them. Tugadh le fios go bhfuil go leor daoine tar éis imeacht as an tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh agus go bhfuil sé ag dul rite leis an mbainistíocht daoine a bhfuil na dintiúir chuí acu a earcú ina n-áit. So far this year, it was said, only 37 newcomers have joined the service. Go nuige seo i mbliana, a dúradh, níor tháinig isteach sa tseirbhís ach 37 núíosach. To make matters worse, only 28 people were recruited last year, it was said. Dá dhonacht an scéal sin, níor earcaíodh ach 28 duine anuraidh, a dúradh. Independent Dáil MP Cathal Berry, who served as a witness, said it is incredible and highly unusual that only a quarter of the Naval Service's fleet is operational, especially since Ireland is a maritime country. Dúirt an Teachta Dála Neamhspleách Cathal Berry, a chaith seal ina fhianóglach, go bhfuil sé dochreidte agus thar a bheith neamhghnách nach bhfuil ach an ceathrú cuid de loingeas na Seirbhíse Cabhlaigh ag feidhmiú, go háirithe ós tír mhuirí í Éire. According to the Bear the low pay in the Naval Service is the cause of the evil. Dar leis an mBéarach gurb é an pá íseal sa tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh údar an oilc. Speaking on RTÉ, he also drew attention to the lack of employment rights in the service and said that the workers are not even allowed to go under the protection of the Labor Court. Ag labhairt dó ar RTÉ, tharraing sé aird chomh maith ar an easpa cearta fostaíochta sa tseirbhís agus dúirt nach bhfuil cead ag na hoibrithe dul ar choimirce na Cúirte Oibreachais, fiú. He is very worried, he said, that smugglers will try to ride the tide and have a full code or the rest of the Naval Service fleet will be put to sea again. Tá an-imní air, arsa sé, go bhféachfaidh lucht smuigleála leis an taoide a fhreastal agus go mbeidh lánscód acu nó go gcuirfear an chuid eile de loingeas na Seirbhíse Cabhlaigh chun farraige an athuair. Tá ciníochas cáinte ag Uachtarán na hÉireann ina theachtaireacht bhliantúil Fhéile Pádraig. The President has also drawn attention in his message to forced migration, poverty and the climate crisis. Tá aird tarraingthe freisin ag an Uachtarán ina theachtaireacht ar imirce éigeantach, ar bhochtaineacht agus ar an ngéarchéim aeráide. He specifically mentions the people of Turkey and Syria "who are rebuilding there after the terrible earthquakes that happened last month. Commenting on the war in Ukraine and the refugees who have fled that country, the President says "it is very heartwarming how so many families and schools have welcomed us in this country, and in places other, before thousands and thousands of citizens of Ukraine who were displaced and fled because of the conflict in their homeland." Agus é ag trácht ar an gcogadh san Úcráin agus ar na dídeanaithe atá teite as an tír sin, deir an tUachtarán "gur mór an tógáil croí é mar a d'fháiltigh an oiread sin de theaghlaigh agus de scoileanna sa tír seo, agus in áiteanna eile, roimh na mílte agus na mílte de shaoránaigh de chuid na hÚcráine a cuireadh as seilbh agus a theith de bharr na coimhlinte ina dtír dhúchais." He also draws attention to aspects of St. Patrick's life which "are evident in today's contemporary circumstances... According to him "(c)as the story of Saint Patrick encourages us to reflect on the importance of migration as a constant theme in the historical experience of the Irish community, we need to confront the horrible truth of the abuse of vulnerable people for the purposes of bribery, and the forced migration that still continues." Dar leis "(c)é go spreagann scéal Naomh Pádraig muid le machnamh a dhéanamh ar thábhacht na himirce mar théama leanúnach i dtaithí phobal na hÉireann go stairiúil, is gá dúinn dul i ngleic leis an bhfírinne uafasách a bhaineann leis an mí-úsáid ar dhaoine leochaileacha do chuspóirí brabaigh, agus an imirce éigeantach a leanann go fóill." Regarding poverty, the President places the Horn of Africa in a situation where "hunger is stealing their abilities, their dignity and their destiny from millions of our brothers and sisters every day. Maidir le bochtaineacht, cuireann an tUachtarán Corn na hAfraice i gcás, mar a bhfuil "an t-ocras ag goid a gcumais, a ndínite agus a bhfuil i ndán dóibh ó na milliúin dár ndeartháireacha agus dár ndeirfiúracha gach lá. jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/y9poubqp The Defense Forces have three options: proposing the middle ground. Trí rogha ag Óglaigh na hÉireann: an bealach meánach á mholadh. The Defense Forces would not be in a position to protect the people, territories or property of this country from the plots of the enemy - should it occur - for lack of resources, a new report says. Ní bheadh Óglaigh na hÉireann in araíocht muintir, críocha ná maoin na tíre seo a chosaint ar fheillbhearta namhad - dá dtiocfadh a leithéid i gceist - cheal acmhainní, a deirtear i dtuarascáil nua. According to the report from the Defense Forces Commission, it is time and imperative to radically transform and modernize the defense forces of this country. De réir na tuarascála ón gCoimisiúin um Óglaigh na hÉireann gur mithid agus gur den riachtanas é fórsaí cosanta na tíre seo a athrú ó bhonn agus a nua-aoisiú. Should the proposed major project be undertaken, it is said, it would have to be closely overseen by the Oireachtas and other State bodies. Sa chás go dtabharfaí faoin mórthogra atáthar a mholadh, a deirtear, níor mhór don Oireachtas agus d'fhorais eile an Stáit dianmhaoirseacht a dhéanamh air. The report explores three ambitions: The Defense Forces may be exhausted as it is but unable to defend the nation against ordinary foreign military forces. Trí uaillmhian a chíortar sa tuarascáil: D'fhéadfadh Óglaigh na hÉireann fuirseadh leo mar atá ach d'fhágfadh sin nach bhféadfaidís an náisiún a chosaint ar ghnáthfhórsaí míleata ón gcoigríoch. That, or the military capability of the Volunteers could be strengthened. É sin, nó d'fhéadfaí cumas míleata na nÓglach a threisiú. In that case, a new radar system would have to be implemented; improving intelligence and cyber defense services; and adding to the fleet. Sa chás sin, chaithfí córas nua radair a chur i bhfeidhm; seirbhísí faisnéise agus cibearchosanta a fheabhsú; agus cur leis an gcabhlach. Finally, the Defense Forces could be placed on an equal footing with the defense forces of other small European Union countries. Agus an meall mór ar deireadh, d'fhéadfaí Óglaigh na hÉireann a chur ar chomhchéim chumais le fórsaí cosanta thíortha beaga eile an Aontais Eorpaigh. In that case, however, the budget of the Defense Forces would have to be tripled. Sa chás sin, ámh, chaithfí buiséad na nÓglach a mhéadú a thrí oiread. The Commission currently proposes to focus on the second and third ambitions separately but with the opportunity to engage in the kind of public and political debate that is needed. Molann an Coimisiún díriú faoi láthair ar an dara huaillmhian agus an tríú ceann a chur ar leithligh ach a mbeidh deis ann an cinéal díospóireachta poiblí agus polaitiúla atá de dhíth a chur sa siúl.

Freagra soiléir ar dhearcadh na hÉireann ag teastáil ón Rúis. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov wants an immediate response to a letter he sent to Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney on this country's position on security in Europe. Tá Aire Gnóthaí Eachtracha na Rúise Sergey Lavrov ag iarraidh freagra gan mhoill ar litir atá seolta aige chuig Aire Gnóthaí Eachtracha na hÉireann Simon Coveney maidir le dearcadh na tíre seo ar chúrsaí slándála san Eoraip. Sergey Lavrov says in his letter that he wants to ascertain whether Ireland's attitude to previous commitments on security arrangements has changed. Deir Sergey Lavrov sa litir go bhfuil sé ag iarraidh a dheimhniú an bhfuil dearcadh na hÉireann ar ghealltanais a tugadh roimhe seo maidir le socruithe slándála, an bhfuil an dearcadh sin tar éis athrú. He wants a clear answer, he says in the letter. Freagra soiléir atá uaidh, a deir sé sa litir. The letter also states that European countries, including Ireland, have pledged not to secure their own security if other countries suffer. Deirtear sa litir chomh maith gur gheall tíortha san Eoraip, Éire ina measc, nach ndaingneoidís a slándáil féin dá mbeadh tíortha eile thíos leis. Russia claims that this principle has been violated since Ukraine joined the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for several years. Maíonn an Rúis go bhfuil an prionsabal seo sáraithe ó chuaigh an Úcráin i dtláithínteacht leis an Aontas Eorpach agus le hEagraíocht Chonradh an Atlantaigh Thuaidh le roinnt blianta. Conversely, Western countries accuse the Russians of seeking to increase their power and intend to invade Ukraine. Os a choinne sin, cuireann tíortha an Iarthair i leith na Rúiseach go bhfuil siadsan ag iarraidh cur lena gcumhacht féin agus rún acu ionradh a dhéanamh ar an Úcráin. Earlier today, the United States announced that it was to send an additional 3,000 troops to Poland and Romania because of what it says is the threat that Russia will launch a raid on Ukraine. Níos túisce inniu, d'fhógair na Stáit Aontaithe go bhfuil siad le 3,000 saighdiúir breise a chur go dtí an Pholainn agus an Rómáin mar gheall ar an mbaol a deir siad atá ann go dtabharfaidh an Rúis ruathar faoin Úcráin. 140,000 Russian soldiers are currently gathered on the border between Russia and Ukraine. Tá 140,000 saighdiúr Rúiseach bailithe ar an teorainn idir an Rúis agus an Úcráin faoi láthair.

There have been warm tributes to the late Jerry Lynch, who passed away this weekend. Jerry was born and reared in the townland of Clogher, three miles due south of Kilfenora in Co. Clare, a village famous for it’s tradition of ceili music. Over the years many of his ancestors have played with the Kilfenora Ceili Band, including his father P.J, brother Pat and his other brother John is the present band leader. Jerry was a wonderful Irish tenor and has sung at concerts and festivals in Ireland, the U.K and the U.S. He is described locally as a total gentleman. He was also member of Kilfenora Choir and Ennistymon Choral Society. In 1998, Jerry released his first complete album, The Dimming of the Day, produced by his cousin P.J Curtis. To date this album has sold 35,000 units and continues to sell well every Christmas. This is due mainly to the popularity of “ A Silent Night Christmas 1915 ”, a really moving song about The Christmas Truce in WW 1. It was written by Cormac McConnell from Enniskillen. He featured with a host of other artists on the Clare (Banner) anthem written by Tim Collins "Clare, My Heart My Home" which was launched during Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Ennis 2017. In 2019 the Kilfenora Ceili Band launched there latest album "Both Sides Now", Jerry sang two songs on the album "Crusader" and "John O'Dreams". (Attached) and toured around the country with the Kilfenora to launch the new album. This year, Jerry's daughter Kathleen Malone launched a charity album "My Island Home", all proceeds from this CD will go to Burren Chernobyl Project, she mentions in the notes of the album, that she is so happy her Dad, Jerry, sang "Whispering Hope" and "You'll Never be the sun" with her on the album. Jerry is a huge loss to the traditional and choral music community and will be greatly missed. Tim Collins of the Kilfenora Ceilí Band spoke with Gavin on Monday's Morning Focus to pay tribute to Jerry Lynch.

Living in an isolated area is never easy. Its even more frightening when you're and elderly farmer living on his own, certain that there are people scoping out your home for break-ins. Add that to high - profile incidents of violent robberies across the Irish countryside, and it most certainly becomes a tense situation. But does defending your land and property mean you can take a life? In 2004 Padraig Nally faced this exact situation. But was he justified in his actions? And did discrimination play a part in the altercation at his farmhouse and the subsequent trial? This week we look at the the events surrounding the Nally Case and the impact it had on Irish Law.
