Dann war er noch einmal bei ABBA Voyage. Sam auch. Und Sam fand es grässlich; Oli fantastisch. So verschieden sind halt die Geschmäcker. Choreographer Sir Wayne McGregor is one of the most acclaimed, innovative and influential figures in contemporary dance. His works are often the result of creative collaborations with artists, musicians, filmmakers, or with scientists to explore technological issues. In 2006 he was appointed as Resident Choreographer at the Royal Ballet. He has created more than 20 new works at Covent Garden in that time, including Chroma, set to music by Joby Talbot and The White Stripes, and Woolf Works, a full-length ballet based on the life and writings of Virginia Woolf. More recently, McGregor brought the post-apocalyptic vision of Margaret Atwood to the stage in his ballet MaddAddam, based on the writer's acclaimed trilogy of novels. He has worked as a movement director on films including Harry Potter Goblet Of Fire and Mary Queen Of Scots, collaborated with bands including Radiohead and Chemical Brothers, and choreographed the virtual concert, ABBA Voyage. In October 2025, Somerset House in London will mount a landmark exhibition dedicated to McGregor's trailblazing collaborations that have radically defined how we think about performance, movement, and the body. Having won numerous awards, including two Oliviers, Sir Wayne McGregor was knighted in 2024.Wayne McGregor talks to John Wilson about his childhood in Stockport, where he took dance classes and was inspired by John Travolta's moves in Saturday Night Fever. He recalls the house and techno music of the late 80s when he was a student, and how the freedom of expression he felt on nightclub dance-floors informed his style of choreography. Whilst living in New York after leaving university, Wayne came across an open-air performance by the legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham, whose company was dancing to live music conducted by the avant-garde composer John Cage. It was a chance encounter that had a profound impact on McGregor. He also discusses how science and technology has been a major thematic influence on much of his work in recent years, and how AI has been used to create new works through analysis of physical movement and artistic expression.Producer Edwina Pitman

For this brand new podcast episode, Chris and Alex are delighted to discuss the spectacle and staging of virtual holograms with Ian Comley, VFX Supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic and part of the creative team that brought the ABBA Voyage (2022-) musical experience to life. Over three years in the making, ABBA Voyage uses computer-generated imagery to (re)imagine the long-retired Swedish group for 21st century audiences. The show combines sophisticated de-aging techniques to craft the illusion of the band's 1979 selves, combined with re-recorded vocals and a contemporary light show. Topics include the fluctuating role of nostalgia in the ‘retro' creation of ABBA's virtual ‘abbatars' and the speculative aesthetic of contemporary musical concerts; the ethics of virtual holography when combined with digitally-mediated posthumous performance; the myth of the photographic ‘close-up' rendered in computer graphics; questions of likeness, liveness, and duration in the construction of an immersive concert; and the complex status of ABBA Voyage as a feature-length animation that negotiates the musical star as a computerised base asset. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Ce spectacle unique utilise des hologrammes pour redonner vie au groupe sur scène, créant une expérience émotionnelle intense pour les spectateurs. His thunderingly funny, fond and illuminating book – My My!: Abba Through The Years – traces their story, looks at the snobbery and critical mauling they endured and figures out how they made records so universally popular and which still move him to tears 50 years later. It's also the best example of any book we've read that can explain the mechanics of music to a non-musician. It's highly recommended, as is this podcast which alights upon … … a 50 year-old story – “for 42 of which they haven't existed”. .. the vicious early press reaction - “calculatingly commercial”, “dispassionate” … … the divine clunkiness of their early TV appearances. … the sense of the melancholy we've attached to their music - and why. ... the immense value of splitting up early and never reforming or publicly falling out.   … the immaculate construction of Dancing Queen (which opens with the second half of the chorus) and why “there are two types of wedding disco – ones that start with Dancing Queen and terrible ones.” … the maturity of Abba's lyrics – about marriages, relationships, children and other subjects pop music rarely tackles. … why Abba Voyage is so affecting that he's seen it three times. … and Muriel's Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and other key factors in The Comeback. Order Giles Smith's My My!: Abba Through The Ages here …https://www.amazon.co.uk/My-ABBA-Through-Ages-ebook/dp/B0CF73GNN4Help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Do you think they added the "and decorator" bit to "painter and decorator" because people kept accidentally booking watercolourists to come in and do the spare room? Like these painters kept showing up with their easels, and the person's like, "you won't be needing that buddy-boy, here's some Farrow & Ball", and then we cut to the Tate Modern and there's a contractor rolling a second undercoat on to a Rothko while the guards try to rugby tackle him. The film director joins BoF editor-at-large Tim Blanks to discuss how he uses his fashion and music roots to stage powerful experiences including from Abba Voyage and recent Dior Men and Fendi Couture shows. Background: Film and creative director Bailie Walsh cut his teeth working in London during the nineties and early aughts alongside talents like Boy George, Leigh Bowery and Alexander McQueen. While Walsh calls himself a film director, editor-at-large Tim Blanks, who hosts him on the latest BoF Podcast, describes him as more of a magician. He was behind the hologram of Kate Moss featured in McQueen's show “Widows of Culloden” in 2006 that went on to be showcased in both London's V&A Museum and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. More recently, he's captivated audiences with his immersive virtual concert, Abba Voyage, in London, and his work with Kim Jones, who tapped Walsh to help stage Dior Menswear and Fendi Couture shows in January. Walsh approaches his projects with the goal of completely immersing his audience — and often pushes the limits to do so. “What I love about being creative or having the opportunity to be creative is a challenge,” said Walsh. Key Insights: Walsh helped infuse Dior Menswear Fall/Winter 2023 runway with TS Eliot's poem “The Waste Land.” Models drifted past massive screens featuring Gwendoline Christie and Robert Pattinson reading the poem, spliced with music from composer Max Richter. Creatives need to live on the edge of fear, according to Walsh. “You have to be scared if you're a creative person … you're entering into a journey that you haven't before,” he said. “That's the point of doing it.” Music has been a thread throughout Walsh's career. He's made videos for Boy George, crafted Abba's hologram-filled Voyage concert but also used music as a source of inspiration for his Daniel Craig-fronted film “Flashbacks of a Fool.”Walsh spent over two years thinking about how to play with illusion and reality to create Abba Voyage. Throughout the display, there are costume changes, chatter between the artists and shadowy figures still present when the lights are out. Then, there's a moment the group suddenly disappears — a reminder the show was contrived. Want more from The Business of Fashion? Subscribe to our daily newsletter here. Hosted on Acast. The concerts take place in the ABBA Arena, a purpose-built facility at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London's East End.Gisla and Walsh provide us with an in-depth overview of the ABBA Voyage project, which employed a range of motion-capture and graphics technologies, was “filmed” with 160 cameras, took five years to realize, involved collaboration with ILM and many other partners, and cost $175 million. They also tell us why they think this shared, immersive experience has proven so popular with audiences; describe how those audiences “fall in love” with the ABBAtars, share their thoughts on the project's implications for the future of storytelling, and more.

Baillie is the director of the extraordinary virtual concert, ABBA Voyage, though to call it a virtual concert really doesn't begin to describe quite how spectacular it is. Made in conjunction with the band, it features incredible life sized avatars - or ABBAtars - a mind-blowing light show and sensational live band, and is a full-blown assault on the senses in the best possible way.  As a show, it also raises questions about the future of gigs - and how big tours can be more sustainable.

Amongst all his other difficulties, Boris Johnson has promised to improve the outcome for rape victims, saying he will fix the system. It was a pledge made after the murder of Sarah Everard. Today, long awaited guidelines on evidence in trials have been published which campaigners say will do just the opposite. They'll deter women from coming forward because police and prosecutors will STILL be allowed to ask for personal records like medical and therapy notes and even school reports. We discussed this last month - when our reporter Melanie Abbott heard that draft guidelines prepared by the Crown Prosecution Service were being overturned. She joins us to tell us the latest. Bravehearted is a new book that explores the extraordinary story of the women of the American ‘Wild West' during the 19th century. Whether they were the hard-drinking hard-living poker players and prostitutes of the new boom towns, 'ordinary' wives and mothers walking two thousand miles across the prairies pulling their handcarts behind them, Chinese slave-brides working in laundries, or the Native American women displaced by the mass migration, all have one trait in common: extreme resilience and courage in the face of the unknown. We speak to author and historian, Katie Hickman about a period of history she believes has never been as well-documented by women as this. The Living Wage Foundation has said that women are being disproportionately impacted by the cost of living crisis as they are more likely to be in low paid work. Today the government is set to announce support, the Financial Times' Clear Barrett joins Jessica on the programme to discuss how this could help you. One of the most successful pop groups in history is back! 40 years since their last concert, ABBA, are once again performing. Well almost… Agnetha, Freida, Benny and Björn spent 5 weeks performing their songs in motion capture suits so that their movements could be captured and turned into ABBA-TARS. The end result? A digital, 360-degree, immersive concert experience which feels like you're watching ABBA, from the 1970s, perform in front of you. Producer Svana Gisla has kept the whole production on track for five years. A recent landmark report revealed 75% of women of colour have experienced racism at work, 27% having suffered racial slurs and 61% report changing themselves to fit in. Produced by gender equality organisation, the Fawcett Society, and the race equality think tank, the Runnymede Trust, ‘Broken Ladders' explores and documents the experiences of 2,000 women of colour in workplaces across the UK, showing the harmful and entrenched racism that women of colour endure at every stage of their career journey. Kathleen opens the show drinking a Mike's Pastry Cannoli Stout from Harpoon Brewery. She reviews her travels, including shows in Ridgefield CT, Wilmington DE, Santa Barbara CA, and Thousand Oaks CA as well as a weekend at Lake of the Ozarks fishing with her dad. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Stonewall Kitchen's Bacon Ranch Dressing, which she absolutely loves. She then tastes Best Foods Spicy Mayonnaise, which she doesn't like because it has too much heat and not enough “tang.” She finishes off her tasting with Herr's Honey Sriracha Kettle Cooked chips, which she finds conflicting with the sweet aftertaste but thinks honey lovers will like them. QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen shares her experience seeing Queen Stevie Nicks live at Red Rocks on May 11th. Queen Dolly has announced that she'll gracefully accept if voted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and has partnered with Taco Bell to create a TikTok musical about the Mexican Pizza menu item. UPDATES: Kathleen gives updates on Meghan Markle's animated series for Netflix, the Spirit Airlines merger with either Frontier or JetBlue, and the latest on Anna Delvey's deportation.IMMERSIVE DIGITAL CONCERTS ON THE RISE: As a follow-up to Episode 56, Kathleen reads about the upcoming ABBA avatar concert debut in London, entitled ABBA Voyage. The music industry has taken note of the success of this production, and other “Immersive” concepts such as the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit, and are looking to expand concert productions in this manner. Kathleen then reviews her latest Immersive experience, which was the Immersive Frida Kahlo exhibit in Los Angeles. “HOLY SHIT THEY FOUND IT”: Kathleen is amazed to read about the discovery of a Norwegian sandal from the Iron Age in Norway's Horse Ice Patch, and a 2,000-year-old marble sculpture of a Roman bust in an Austin Goodwill. She offers her thoughts on motives, etc., and is saddened to read the final details of how the two were captured by Indiana authorities. QANTAS ANNOUNCES 20-HOUR FLIGHT LAUNCH: Kathleen reads a news release from Qantas Airlines who have announced that they are including direct flights from Sydney to London and NYC in their pending 2025 schedule. Each flight will take approx. 20 hours, making them the world's longest passenger flights.
