We have a special guest with us this week, Helene from Talkin' Ish!: A Podcast Amongst Friends to discuss one of Amazon Prime's best series of 2024. We made sure to discuss the the Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry films and elements that were present within the series. Which twists caught us off guard, the amazing casting, and how being a pregnant mother catching bodies isn't good for the baby. We learned Jason wouldn't survive long in a horror movie because he'll ask too many questions and how women handle being turned down by men. Who was the best character from the series? Powerhouse actress Sharon Taylor swings by the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to talk about her role on Cross, the number one Amazon Prime series in the world. Cross stars Aldis Hodge as the famous detective from James Patterson's books and, later, films starring Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry – but this is not your grandparents' Alex Cross. Yes, this Alex Cross, like the Alex Crosses of yore, uses forensic psychology to identify murderers and bring them to justice. But the Alex Cross of 2024 is more of a fully fleshed human being. We see the fullness of his life as a Black man, father, widower, friend, lover, and detective in a white supremacist world upended by the murders of George Floyd and Sandra Bland. Cross on Prime is sexy, dark, addictive, and made even more delicious by the presence of the aforementioned Sharon Taylor. Sharon plays Oracene Massey, Cross's immediate boss, which is a tough position to be in, because it's hard to be Cross' boss sometimes, especially when you're very pregnant, and there's a serial killer terrorising your city and your team. In this funny and fascinating conversation between long-time friends, Sharon and Sabrina delve into the joys and beautiful challenges of Sharon's juicy role in this critically acclaimed thriller. NOTE: Crucial spoiler talk re: Cross occurs between 34:34 and 44:28. If you don't want to be spoiled, skip ahead! Episode sponsor: UBCP/ACTRA

It's absolute anarchy this week as we manage to begin the podcast first with a debate about proper podcast nomenclature and then with Kay and Boyd fighting over what does and does not constitute and illegal review. And a good thing too, because Aldis Hodge and Ben Watkins join us to talk Cross (22:16) — though not to get cross — and Rebecca Hall drops by to talk The Listeners (49:12). Elsewhere, we give BBC1's The Listeners the full review treatment (1:06:36), plus spice things up with Dune: Prophecy on Sky Atlantic (1:15:48) and discover whether Michael Schur and Ted Danson's new comedy, A Man On the Inside (1:31:22), can hold a candle to The Good Place. Aldis Hodge's career has been busy since his debut as a child actor in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance, but he says all that work has culminated in Prime Video's Cross (November 14). “It just feels like the work that I've done in the past 35 years of my career has led up to this.” Hodge plays Alex Cross, a detective who uses forensic psychology to capture serial killers. The character was made famous in the popular James Patterson novels and film adaptations starring Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry. “If I wasn't on this show, I'd be watching it, because it's the kind of show I've been waiting for for a long time.” And Hodge is going to have that chance, because before the first episode even aired, Prime Video announced that they were renewing it for a second season. “That's a huge leap of faith for them to step out for us, but it also validates the work that our entire crew, our cast, our producers and writers [are doing]. And it is very rare that it happens, but it just lets us know how special this project actually is, and how lucky we are to be a part of it.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this new season premiere episode, Hilliard and guest co-host (actor/filmmaker) Shawn Carter Peterson sat down with JOHNNY RAY GILL - a critically acclaimed actor, filmmaker, rapper, poet and activist. He just finished filming seasons one and two of "CROSS" created by Ben Watkins, Amazon Prime's new psychological thriller based on the best-selling book series Alex Cross by James Patterson. Gill stars opposite Aldis Hodge and Ryan Eggold as Bobby Trey, a deadly, cunning ex-DC police officer from Shreveport who's motived by money and the reclaiming of his family's land, stolen by a racist predatory US government. Up next, Johnny Ray will be seen in cat form, in Oscar winner Gore Verbinski's highly anticipated new animated feature "Cattywumpus." It's purrhaps Gill's most hysterical transformation yet. This dynamic, versatile, potent performer might be best known for his soul-stirring performance as Kerwin, opposite Aden Young in the Ray Mckinnon, Mark Johnson, Melissa Bernstein Sundance series "Rectify." A darling amongst critics, exemplified by reviews like The New Yorker “A Quiet Marvel” and Vulture “There May Never Be a Show Like Rectify Again.”Gill's also fondly remembered for warming audience's hearts with his portrayal of Sam, an autistic man trapped in the bowels of slavery, America's greatest sin, on WGN's hit series "Underground" alongside Jurnee Smollett and Aldis Hodge.Another don't miss episode y'all! Our Motto: "We keep it GAME all day!"For information, Merch (T-SHIRTS/HOODIES IN BLACK, GREY & WHITE), and all things Rant Room!Screenwritersrantroom.comhttps://screenwriters-rant-room.printify.me/productsSubscribe, like, follow, share & 5-star review!@Hilliard Guess on all social mediaIG: @ScreenwritersRantRoom@Johnnyraygill@ShawnthemaestroWE ARE NOW OPEN TO SPONSORSHIPS AND BRANDING OPPORTUNITIES :Screenwritersrantroom@gmail.comWe invest countless hours per week to deliver the actionable content that goes into this podcast. Sir Ian McKellan revealed in an interview with The Big Issue that he has been approached about returning as Gandalf in future Lord of the Rings films, with Andy Serkis' Hunt for Gollum the most immediate movie being made. However, any filming McKellan will do will have to wait until 2025 as the 85-year-old actor is spending the rest of 2024 recovering from a fall he experienced while performing in a stage play. We finally have a title for the Jurassic project that has been the subject of much discussion on this show and it's Jurassic World Rebirth - expected to hit theaters July 2, 2025. Universal Pictures announced the title and release date of this next entry to the franchise along with some stills from the film featuring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, who are starring. Jurassic World Rebirth will take place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, where moviegoers were treated to the original cast from Jurassic Park reuniting. But now…dinosaurs may not be the apex predators, but hold the key to life itself according to plot details. This comes to us from the rumor mill, but insider Jeff Sneider might have scooped that Josh Brolin will be portraying Hal Jordan in the upcoming Lanterns DCU tv series. The series is said to focus on Green Lantern characters John Stewart, played by Aldis Hodge, and Hal Jordan. The two characters will investigate a murder on Earth with John Stewart playing the newbie to Hal Jordan's experienced Lantern.

It's an interesting modern take on the classic HG Wells story, and it makes the Monstie Men ask the question: Are there any other classic Universal monsters that would benefit from this stripped-down, modern take that completely reimagines the original? James Patterson has written bestsellers in many genres. But as he tells the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles in this episode of The Modern Law Library, he has always been fascinated by legal thrillers, courtroom dramas and crime novels. He even considered becoming a lawyer, before his literary career took off. In his newest release, The #1 Lawyer, James Patterson partnered with co-author Nancy Allen to tell the story of Stafford Lee Penney, a criminal defense attorney in Biloxi, Mississippi, who's never lost a case. But after handing a high-profile murder trial involving the son of a mobster, Penney finds himself on the other side of the bench as a defendant himself, charged with murdering his own wife. Patterson has written and co-written more than 300 books, including bestselling series like Alex Cross, Women's Murder Club and Maximum Ride. He had some writing tips for attorneys, particularly on how to work collaboratively. As Patterson tells listeners in the podcast, he is open about working with other writers on many of his books, and he finds tools like outlining absolutely essential. He also shares with Rawles how he thinks co-writers should handle interpersonal communication while working together. Patterson says one of the major benefits of working with co-authors is pulling from their experiences to make his books more accurate and true to life. When he wrote The President is Missing with Bill Clinton, the former president could tell Patterson the inside details of how a Secret Service detail worked. When he wrote Run, Rose, Run with Dolly Parton, she walked him through the production cycle for a song. Allen, who conducted more than 30 jury trials as a prosecutor in Missouri and taught law for 15 years at Missouri State University, contributed her firsthand courtroom experience to The #1 Lawyer. Patterson says they worked to make everything as accurate as possible—while still allowing for a good story. It's the pair's second book together, following a previous standalone novel, Juror #3. In this episode of The Modern Law Library, Patterson shares some of his favorite law-related pop culture picks; news about new and ongoing projects; and describes a very special birthday event with Dolly Parton. He also discusses how his children's series Maximum Ride got caught up in Florida book bans in 2023. For fans of Patterson's breakout success, the Alex Cross series launched in 1993 with Along Came a Spider, the author shares updates about what's next for the intrepid detective—including details about the upcoming Amazon Prime TV series Cross, starring Aldis Hodge.

Why did the writers think it was a good idea to jam four additional superheroes we'd never met into the same film in which we're also introduced to Black Adam? And what—in all that is holy—was with those terrible needle drops? PLUS: All hail the mighty, INTERGANG! Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sara Shahi, Quintessa Swindell, Marwan Kenzari, Bodhi Sabongui, and Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate; directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. We start the new year off with a BIG movie, especially according to its star, Mr. Dwayne Mr. "The Rock" E. Normous Johnson. It's Black Adam, a superhero probably even fewer of you have heard of than Shazam (nee Captain Marvel), in whose pages B. Adam first appeared. He's not your daddy's superhero, in that he kills a bunch of people, but he probably is your daddy's (or granddaddy's) superhero in the sense that he's from 1945. Anyway, they made a long, boring movie about him, so we talk about it.ALSO: It's time to VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE SEXY XENOMORPH MUSIC VIDEO! It's hard to believe Dwayne Johnson hasn't played a superhero before, but he's finally filling this gap in his resume with Black Adam, in which he joins the DC Universe. Brought out of a tomb after thousands of years, the character Black Adam has a mostly dour demeanor which doesn't exactly play to the wisecracking side Johnson has showed in other films. Black Adam also stars Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, and Sarah Shahi.
