In this episode, we're joined by Gayle Jordan, the Executive Director of Recovering from Religion. We talk about how Gayle's organization helps people through the pain and difficulty associated with leaving a faith. Additionally, we learn about many of the specific problems and traumas caused by religion through Gayle's fascinating personal story of leaving the Southern Baptist church later in life and how it led her to Recovering from Religion. Finally, we learn whether a “True Atheist” can think religious people are stupid and what's so great about a covered dish supper. In the bonus section, available exclusively to our Patreon supporters, we talk more about life as a Southern Baptist, the few outlets from religious repression offered in the community, and concerns over reading Harry Potter.[Note: This episode was edited to replace some of the questions due to technical difficulties. When transitioning out of religion, we may leave more than just a deity behind. Views on any number of social issues can unexpectedly shift from one side of to another. This shift tends to provide the flexibility of seeing the issues from many different viewpoints, which can be both a blessing and a curse. In this RfRx, Gayle Jordan will share her eye-opening, frustrating, and hilarious story of running as an open atheist for a seat as a Tennessee State Senator in 2016 & 2018. We'll also explore how her views on social issues changed as she transitioned from being a devout Southern Baptist to identifying as an atheist. Gayle Jordan is an estate-planning attorney and former Southern Baptist who left the faith years ago when her then-teenagers began asking questions she could not answer. Her research led her (and her children) into the light of reason and rationality. Years later, she still feels the effects, both positive and negative, of that dramatic shift in perspective and attitude. It is this sympathy and compassion that drives her to reach out to help others navigate the emotional and physical process involved in leaving one's faith. Gayle lives in Oregon where she raises goats and chickens, and is trying her hand at grape-growing at her sunny hillside home affectionately known as Peak Heathen. She blogs about a variety of topics at Happy. Healthy. Heathen. For RfRx comments, inquiries & topical questions, email us at RfRx@recoveringfromreligion.org. Please join us today by welcoming our very own Objectivity Dan and special guest host Gayle Jordan with Recovering from Religion(RFR) that provides support, resources, community, and hope. First up we have Matt in MD that would like to discuss nationalist movements around the world that set a precedent for others to follow. These movements endorse one another and support each other financially. We can learn, observe, and see how these movements do not thrive. It helps to make the policy changes that are needed by allying with the folks who share our same objectives, regardless of their religion. Next we have Danny in CA who has some points about religion's attempt to solve mental health issues and are sometimes even anti-medication. You are not alone with this. Mental health problems will not go away by praying them away or ignoring them. RFR provides peer support on the help line, online communities, and sources for evidence based therapies. Margaret from CO wants to know if RFR helps with being told as a child we are bad people that do things because of Satan. That is just the nature of what religion does and how it works. It is common and there are even folks who have discarded the religious beliefs, but still deal with the damage religion has caused. RFR is a good place to talk about this. It is not your fault that you were shown images of Jesus crucified. David in CA loves Jesus. He wants us to start taking responsibility for our actions and stop blaming our parents or religion. He knows people go to hell after they die because the Bible is 100% true. First off, trauma can be a lifelong debilitating thing and it is accurate to identify the cause as religion. If you believe this after 40 years, you have not looked and searched hard enough because the Bible is full of numerous inaccuracies. J.L.Y. from the UK wants to talk about God's relationship with man after creation. Christianity can't be a religion because religions all require something. He claims this is all about redemption. If you have to do something to get somewhere, then that is a requirement. Christianity is not exempt from being a religion by pretending there is nothing that we must do. Ahmad from OH would like to talk about what a designer is because this is the main issue between believers and atheists. Organic matter decays so there must be an origin. The problem with this, is there is nothing to contrast design within nature. There is no point of reference that can be used. Terry from Canada claims that the seven day cycle proves Jesus is God. The religious account of world events is not necessarily true by what is demonstrated by scientific facts. There are groups of people on earth that do not use the seven day calendar and the seven this is not evidence for Jesus being god. Thank you for tuning heathens and theists and please join us next week!
In this RfRx session Andy Thomson will deliver a presentation on the basic mechanisms the mind uses to produce and accept religious beliefs. He will explore multiple topics such as human evolution, the neurobiology of ritual or how certain cognitive mechanisms generate religion. Andy Thomson is a psychiatrist at University of Virginia Student Health Services. The 9.11 attacks triggered an interest in suicide terrorism, which led to the discovery of an unappreciated world of research into how and why human minds generate religious beliefs. Andy has written “Why We Believe In God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith” which brings that world to anyone interested. Hosted by Gayle Jordan, RfR Executive Director, and Medelin Nolasco, RfR Volunteer & RfRx Social Host. Recorded on March 22, 2021. In this episode of the Atheist Experience, Matt Dillahunty has a special guest, Gayle Jordan, on the show. Gayle is an Executive Director on the Recovering From Religion. In addition, she ran two-times as a Democratic candidate for a State Senate seat in a very red part of Tennessee but did not win. Not to mention, she won the American Atheist's Atheist of the Year Award this year! At the beginning of the show, Gayle discusses what she does at Recovering From Religion and building communities for nonreligious people.Afterwards, they begin taking calls. The first caller is John from Connecticut. He discusses the difficulty of leaving religion because he still believes in God at the back of his mind and asks Matt to help him out with that. Can Matt help him?The next caller, Aaron from Pennsylvania discusses his difficulties with the AA and its method. Is there another method to deal with alcoholism without turning to a higher power? Listen in and find out!The following caller named AC from Illinois claims to have a simple proof that shows that atheism is not possible by logic. Carl Sagan once said that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Let's see if AC meets this requirement. Following a lengthy conversation, the next caller Ron from San Antonio, Texas discusses how the human body complexity is evidence for God. The classic Watchmaker Argument brought up again but debunked by Matt Dillahunty. Next on the list, Dale in Ohio steps up to the plate to discuss his "discovery" of the Garden of Eden? Is this discovery worthy of a Nobel Prize? Tune in and find out!Afterward, Mojo from the UK talks about how Intelligent Design is a scientific theory. Or is it? This is something worth listening to. Subsequently, Oliver in Washington discusses the difference between belief and knowledge. Do you know something or merely suspect something? Word choice is very important. Finally, Guillermo from California discusses if Atheists can use phrases such as OMG or Holy Cow. This is probably the shortest call you will ever see at the Atheist Experience.

It is of the utmost importance to dialogue about everything. There are many reasons to do so: to tear down false preconceptions about each other’s worldview, to understand the subtleties of each other’s thoughts and convictions better, to raise empathy towards each other, and know better what to challenge and how to do it, so that we can challenge what it is, and not what we make it to be. What is today’s situation about women’s roles in the world? What are the differences, if there are, between equality and sameness? What are the healthiest ways to dialogue about it? What does the Bible say about women? What is the ultimate truth about women from a Christian and secular perspective? We are joined this week by Brigid Fitch from Holy CRAP! The VlogCast. http://holycrapthevlogcast.com/ https://brigidfitch2112.wordpress.com/ DUSTIN' OFF THE DEGREE - The Unification Church NEWS Hundreds of couples gathered, wearing crowns, for the AR-15 blessing ceremony at the Unification Sanctuary http://cbsn.ws/2tmL8Ua The Unification Church's most famous ritual is mass weddings, but they also do other commitment ceremonies, such as the one that the Moonie offshoot World Peace and Unification Sanctuary in Newfoundland, PA held last week with hundreds of couples showing up wearing crowns and carrying their AR-15 style assault rifles, which the church believes to be the rod of iron in Revelation. During the service they drank holy wine and exchanged or renewed wedding vows. Protesters and state police were outside the church and a school across the street bused students across town to another campus. During the service the Rev. Sean Moon prayed for “a kingdom of peace police and peace militia where the citizens, through the right given to them by almighty God to keep and bear arms, will be able to protect one another and protect human flourishing." Florida state senator thinks thoughts and prayers are the only solution http://bit.ly/2D1AcLz The state of Florida debated, passed, and then rescinded an assault rifle ban. One republican voting against the bill was state senator Kelli Stargel. She's also interested in limiting gun sales to those under 21, increasing mental health services, and increasing the amount of armed personnel on school campuses, but ultimately… The Tennessee GOP and Lt. Gov. have attacked a special election candidate for the state senate because of her atheism http://bit.ly/2H8gkJ0 Gayle Jordan is the executive director of Recovering from Religion and she's also running for the Tennessee State Senate in a special election. A few weeks ago the state Republican Party Chairman Scott Golden called on voters to reject her because she is a quote “radical atheist”. On March 1 Lt Gov Randy McNally went to social media and wrote: "In my 40 plus years in Tennessee politics, I've seen few candidates as dangerous as Gayle Jordan. She is not just out of step with a majority of Tennessee on matters of policy. She is out of step on matters of values and faith. In her daily work, she directs an organization called “Recovering from Religion.” Most Tennesseans, whether they are strong believers or not, recognize the strength and comfort faith provides. Gayle Jordan rejects faith as a positive force for good in the world. She believes faith is something from which people need to be rescued. This is not the type of person we need in the Tennessee Senate." An atheist in Ohio is suing over the court mandated religious addiction treatment program he has to attend http://bit.ly/2Hb8ZZ1 James Lindon was convicted of drug possession and theft for stealing five hydrocodone pills from the clinic he was working as a pharmacist at and convicted of tampering with evidence for swallowing four of the five pills when confronted by security guards. He was sentenced to a month in a substance abuse program and two years of probation. He's now suing because the program is Alcoholics Anonymous which requires people to submit to a higher power and he's an atheist, thus this court ordered program violates his religious freedom. Cass Midgley and Mark Stephens interview 2 students from Vanderbilt University, Stephen Lee and John Roso. They met through the Secular Student Alliance. Bob was out of town for this one so Mark Stephens is filling in. Also, we open with a 20 minute talk with Gayle Jordan, the executive director of Recovering From Religion, an online resource for people wrestling with their faith and wanting someone to talk to. They have a helpline and chat opportunities and a wealth of resources to point callers to. They help from a neutral position, not trying to influence callers toward any particular belief or unbelief, just be active listeners. Followed by our talk with two Vanderbilt seniors who just graduated this last weekend and who I met through the Secular Student Alliance there on campus. John is a Philosophy major going on to a Masters in it. Stephen is a BioMed Engineering Major. They are roommates and we get to peer into the life of two millennials, both age 21, and their personal histories with Christianity and their journey out of it. And we discuss the collective consciousness of ants. We taped these conversations on April 15th, 2017. We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. We think the world is a better place when more people live by sight, not by faith. Please subscribe to our podcast, and leave a review wherever you listen to podcasts. In this week’s episode, Andy Wakefield is a baby murdering piece of garbage, creationists get strangely angry about schools teaching the controversy over cisgender capitalism, and Gayle Jordan and Darrel Ray will be here to talk about recovering from religion in a non-reupholstering sense. --- To make a per episode donation at Patreon.com, click here: http://www.patreon.com/ScathingAtheist To buy our book, click there: http://www.amazon.com/Diatribes-Godless-Misanthrope-Scathing-Presents-ebook/dp/B00J53FZFI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396141562&sr=8-1 To check out our sister show, The Skepticrat, click here: https://audioboom.com/channel/the-skepticrat To check out our sister show’s hot friend, God Awful Movies, click here: https://audioboom.com/channel/god-awful-movies To get more info about our upcoming live tour, check here: https://scathingatheist.com/2017/05/01/god-awful-movies-world-tour/ --- Guest Links: Check out the Recovering from Religion Foundation Here: https://www.recoveringfromreligion.org/ Sign up to volunteer here: https://www.recoveringfromreligion.org/volunteer/ Learn more about the Secular Therapy Project here: https://www.seculartherapy.org/ --- Headlines: Trump’s latest XOs look to fuck church state separation as near to death as possible: http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/03/politics/trump-religious-liberty-executive-order/ http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/05/04/171991/ http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/05/04/atheists-will-sue-donald-trump-over-his-executive-order-weakening-the-johnson-amendment/ Daubenmire will wear a tin foil hat to avoid chemtrails that cause Alzheimer's disease: http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/im-gonna-err-on-the-side-of-tin-foil-hats-dave-daubenmire-suggests-chemtrails-are-causing-alzheimers-disease/ Daubenmire accuses women at Fox of “tempting men” into sexually harassing them: http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/dave-daubenmire-the-leg-crossers-at-fox-news-are-titillating-men-into-sexually-harassing-them/ Rick Wiles fears computer is giant brain for Satan (yep, really) http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/rick-wiles-theyre-building-a-global-brain-that-will-embody-lucifers-mind/ Measles outbreak in Minneapolis because people are stupid: http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/05/03/526723028/autism-fears-fueling-minnesotas-measles-outbreak Kevin Swanson outlines school’s plans to turn kids into transgendered communists: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/05/04/pastor-kevin-swanson-public-schools-have-a-nefarious-plan-to-turn-kids-into-transgender-communists/ --- This Week in Misogyny: Women banished to huts during their period: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-39734380# Cleric: During Jihad, Muslims can’t fuck women they own if those women are married: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/04/28/extremist-cleric-during-jihad-muslims-cannot-have-sex-with-enslaved-girls-if-they-get-married/ Boko Haram releases the girls it couldn’t sell: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/05/06/radical-islamic-group-boko-haram-frees-more-than-80-kidnapped-girls/ Greg Locke’s planned parenthood protest a bit underwhelming: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/04/27/this-is-the-saddest-planned-parenthood-protest-ive-ever-seen/
Cass and Bob interview Rebecca Murphy. Rebecca is a 46 year old white cisgender heterosexual female, married for 28 years and childfree by choice. She was raised in an off-shoot of Mormonism called Temple Lot. In college she left that faith but was swept up into the International Church of Christ, which under the surface of their inspirational Sunday services was a domineering pyramid scheme with all the mind controlling influences of a cult. Before our talk with Rebecca, Cass has a brief conversation with Harry Flook, a 21 year old British photographer and documentarian visiting the states through former guest Gayle Jordan and the Recovering From Religion organization to chronicle how people find a sense of community after losing their faith and leaving the church. If you’ve been following the last several episodes, you will have noticed that I am on a journey that associate with the stage of life in which I find myself, which I’ll describe as mid-life, post-religious, and post-parent. There seems to be a natural rite of passage happening that is not unlike puberty, where it is going to happen whether you like it or not. In the absence of meaning, formerly found in the role of being a parent and/or seeing one’s self within a religious narrative or simply the realization that one has fewer years left to live than one has lived thus far, some realizations begin to enter one’s mind that can serve as a mirror that exposes immaturity in one’s character (at best) or seem pathological at worst. It turns out (at least for me) that a strong sense of self has been kept at bay by the busying narratives in which my life has been immersed, and as the curtain closes on them (my role as a parent, for example, or my role as child of god destined to live eternally in heaven), and that suppressed identity is coming unchained and emerging from the dungeon with a vengeance. But, it doesn’t know how to behave or even walk and is blinded by the sun and atrophied by immobility so nothing about this is homecoming is going to be pretty. In fact, it can arouse deep anxieties, even panic, and hopelessness that can lead to suicidal thoughts. You will hurt and be hurt by those nearest to you. Especially if they’re going through the same thing at the same time. Many marriages are ended by this transition. But I found my hope in a psychological concept founded by Carl Jung and Murray Bowen called “differentiation.” Differentiation of self is one's ability to separate one's own intellectual and emotional functioning from that of one’s family and/or lover. Individuals with "low differentiation" are more likely to become emotionally fused with others—particularly family or lovers. They’re like Siamese twins attached at the hip. And this attachment, that is largely dependent and codendent, can last for years until this awakening happens and you want to go your own way. Any attempt to do so will be taken personally by the person you are fused with. You want to differentiate yourself from them and they say, “why are you doing this to me?” When in fact, you are doing nothing TO them, they are just leaning on you so hard that they hit the floor when you move. People with "low differentiation" depend on others' approval and acceptance. They either conform themselves to others in order to please them, or they attempt to force others to conform to themselves. They are thus more vulnerable to stress and less adaptive to life changes. You may have heard of a healthy H-shaped relationship, where two stand-alone, vertical lines are in relationship, contrasted with an unhealthy A-shape relationship where those lines are leaning on each other. Those with generally higher levels of "self differentiation" recognize that they need others, but they depend less on others' acceptance and approval. They do not merely adopt the attitude of those around them but acquire and maintain their principles thoughtfully. These principles, morals, and ethics help them resist lapsing into emotional reactivity and impulsive thoughts and actions. Thus, despite conflict, criticism, and even rejection, those with greater capacity to "self differentiate" can stay calm and rationally "clear-headed" enough to carefully assess facts, less clouded by emotion. What they decide and say matches what they do. Even when they act in the best interests of a group, they choose thoughtfully, not because they are caving in to group-think. They're more objective observers, more capable of calmness under relationship and task pressures. Confident in their own thinking, they can either support another's viewpoints without becoming wishy-washy; or, they can reject another's opinions without becoming hostile with them, or passively disconnected from them. The ideal outcome here is when two people (beit father and son, or siblings, or husband and wife) both move from an A shape to an H shape, no one falls to the ground. However, if one person is unwilling or unable to do the work—the introspection, the therapy, the communication, the research—all of which are helpful in understanding what the fuck is happening, then they are most certainly going to crash when the other person differentiates. At that point, they have the option to stay on the floor crying, blaming and demonizing the other person…for the rest of their lives, but in so doing, they miss out on this wonderful evolutionary opportunity to grow up and personally develop, and secondly, they destroy a valuable relationship to their own heart. I see this as a key development for those of us who have graduated from religious faith. When we discover that self-debasing doctrines have left us a depleted shell or ghost-like version of our true selves, we have to find them and meet them, maybe for the first time. We have to get to know them, we have to ask them questions, we have to discover what they like and dislike because they’ve been asked. This is the first step of differentiation. The second is learning how to self-soothe and control our own anxieties. Before, we looked to God or others to comfort us. The third is learning to manage our reactivity, or what Dr. David Schnarch calls, “grounded responding.” Religions remove responsibility from people and when they get our from under that tyranny, they find that they’re ability to respond to circumstances and people is undeveloped. They either over-respond in aggression and thoughtless comments, or under-respond in passive aggression, apathy and dis-attachment. The fourth and last element of differentiation is endurance. Stay in the room with difference. Tolerate some discomfort for the sake of personal growth and the healing of relationships. Toughen up. Grow a pair. Start giving yourself and your loved ones the benefit of the doubt. Don’t be so quick to assume the worst in them. Bounce back after defeat or failure. Ultimately, you know what this is: this is saying yes to what is. This rite of passage is a gift and will reap tremendous benefits in your life and relationships. Like giving birth, if you can survive the pain of transition and the stretching, you will reap a new life. No-sayers want to pretend it’s not happening or that there’s no work to be done here. They may be quick to thrown in the towel or say “there was no hope for that relationship anyway,” which actually may be true, but please, only make that call after exhaustive effort on your part. Know this: there’s nothing wrong with you if you’re going through this. Don’t blame or shame yourself or anyone else. Tenderly welcome your formerly enslaved self into the 21st century, into freedom, and start looking for ways for that beautiful human being to express their self. Teach them they can self-comfort, they can act from their core and not react from fear, and that they have what it takes to finish strong. Leaving religion behind can have real life consequences for many people, some of them frustrating or even traumatic in nature. When one first walks away from a religious tradition, or stands up to the dominant tradition within their own community, a variety of challenges and questions may present themselves. Bob and Cass interview two guests: Gayle Jordan, formerly featured on episode 79 who’s now running for State Senate in Tennessee as an atheist, and our second guest, blogger/activist Nina Jackel of ladyfreethinker.org which has generated over a million views. In the post-Christian experience we go from believing in God to not believing in God and we can get stuck in that stage of pushing against what we no longer believe in. Perhaps after the grieving process, it might be healthy for us to redirect our energies to something that we DO believe in. Today our guests are both modeling that for us. They’ve put themselves out there in active, public forums to be agents of change in the world, working towards promoting the things that they’re FOR. Many of us got into Christianity because it was a vehicle through which we could express our core values—love, compassion, healing, improving people’s lives, and whatnot. Gayle is addressing issues that would improve the lives of Tennesseans like health care, education, and equal rights. Nina is working for animal rights and human rights. We’re not focusing on Nina’s religious deconversion, because she really didn’t have one, her mother being a moderate Episcopal and her dad a moderate Bronx Jew. Gayle is an ex-Christian and we covered her story in episode 79. So this episode is a bit of a detour from our regular subject. We taped these conversations on September 18th and 24th, 2016. Cass & Dr. Bob interview Gayle Jordan. Gayle is the founder of our local Murfreesboro Freethinkers, now over 600 members strong. She’s a mover and shaker and someone to watch in the atheist movement. Raised southern Baptist, her deconversion was parallel with her own mid-life health and fitness awakening. As she turned 40 she decided to study the science of personal health, where she bumped into a lot of science which included evolution. Between this and her children’s questions about Bible assertions, her confidence in Christianity unraveled. In the meantime she earned a law degree and strengthened her body enough to complete the Iron Man Triathlon. We taped this conversation on December 5th, 2015.
