In today's episodeHello of the Talk Heathen, Secular Rarity is joined by Richard Gilliver who will sort through topics of Jesus proof, gravity not existing, giving up god for Lent, theist-atheist relationships and wokeism. First caller is Clark in CA who claims that necessary conditions can't be accounted for under naturalism because there are conjunctions with two inconsistent propositions. That natural world is what we have and what we can measure. Do you have a demonstration of your system that counters the natural world? Why should we accept idealism as the alternative? What is the relation of idealism to reality? Premises like this need supporting evidence, not just assertions. Mark from TX asks the hosts what evidence would be required for atheists to believe in Jesus. It is first important to understand that not everyone in the world has the same systems. We must establish if god is possible, and then which god. Sufficient evidence that is not necessarily specific, is what would be required. We would like to see the best piece of evidence. Chuck in HI claims that whatever holds the universe together is scientific proof of god, and there is no such thing as gravity. There are physicists that can explain the collection of matter and what makes up the universe. Before dismissing something you don't understand, take a closer look at the science you don't agree with, and call back. Hannah in PA is a Sunday school teacher that is considering giving up god for Lent as she goes through the deconstruction process. This could be a chance to soften some of the crucial elements that cause harm. You are not responsible for these young people, however, if you are questioning your faith, you don't want to put yourself in a position of culpability by placing seeds of doubt to the children. You must care for yourself first and foremost and can benefit by contacting Recovering From Religion. Shawn in MO is an atheist who feels that a theist/atheist relationship would be uncomfortable. Relationships of all kinds are not perfect in every circumstance. If you meet someone that happens to be religious, just be honest with that person to begin with. It is okay to have a different preference than somebody else because it is a partnership between the people involved. If you meet someone that is super hot and find out they are religious, so what? Alok in CA believes that wokeism overlaps with atheism. When people stop passing laws that put people in jail for drag shows, then we will stop talking about it. Hearing the word “woke” now usually comes from people who want to attack others for their identities. Caring for people is not woke; it is simply caring for people.

In today's episode of Talk Heathen, please observe how Student Doctor Ben and Blatant Blatheist handle the various calls with ease.First caller is Ethan from TN. He states that a right winged, conservative society consisting of nuclear families would be better than what we have now. In what ways is a nuclear family better than others? Do gender roles determine the betterness of family structure? If the nuclear family is better, then we should have evidence to back that up. If you describe the nuclear family as an institution, how is it defined? The caller was not able to provide a definition. Wesley from WV has proof of Jesus! The proof is in our mouths as teeth since Jesus has healed two teeth of every person on earth. Is there a way to demonstrate the truth of what you are saying? Thomas from TN has some questions about processing the death of his wife as an atheist. Grief beyond belief is helpful for these situations so you don't grieve alone. You can also contact Recovering From Religion for support. One of the best things to do is to accept what is so that you can deal with the reality and not prolong your suffering. We hope you will get through this time. Bryan from Ireland wonders how many people who think they believe, really don't. There are times when you feel unconvinced, and then fear takes over. We tend to fall back on what we were taught and people stay in religion for different reasons such as marriage. Could it be that the culture in Ireland is different from the U.S. when it comes to these things? Zakean from OK has come out as both non-binary and atheist. Their family is supportive yet refuses to use their pronouns or their name. Ben recommends they set up boundaries with the family where interaction is restricted if proper pronouns are not used. Some people allow a year or so to ask questions. If you are unable to get through to your family, acceptance helps. This dynamic is incredibly common in the trans community; you are not alone. Vaibhav from India wants to know how to engage with the one non-atheist in his small village, which is a place for people who have been kicked out of their families. If you kick this person out, that is the same thing that religious families do. Focus less on the religious aspect and more on the agreement that this person has violated. Brooklyn in FL does not believe Satanic themed performances should be banned from public spaces. If we regulate one viewpoint for art, what else are we going to regulate? People have every right to change the channel. Satanism is being used to prove a point and is being showcased openly. The Satanic Panic never went away! Thank you for tuning in this week! Please remember the essential workers and we will see you next week!

In today's episode of Talk Heathen, Objectively Dan and Student Doctor Ben who will navigate through the calls as a dynamic power team!First up is Steven from Europe who says that religion can be beneficial to society for reasons such as the civil rights movement being inspired by religion. Who supported the ownership of other people in the United States? Do you think it is the religious aspects specifically that causes people to do things for civil rights? If there are multiple factors, how can we determine that religion changes the outcome? When there are two opposing points of view, do we always have to give equal weight to each side? What if each side does not have equal contributors. Atheists tend to check themselves before they wreck themselves. Wesley from WV is next who asks about The Atheist's Club and if atheists believe in Darwinism. He proposes a hypothetical situation where he offers the hosts electronic money to get a barcode on their hands as a reference to the Mark of the Beast. Why should we believe what the Book of Revelation Says? Why do you think these predictions are true? What if Student Doctor Ben had a vision that was opposite of what Revelation says?Charles from GA would like to defend slavery by stating that god is a proponent of slavery and we are either slaves of god or of sin, and that employment is slavery. We have heard this argument before. Our problem is the owning of other people as an institution. How can a slave owner be loving? If I Dan was a Christian, would you like to be his slave? What if he invaded your city and took you as a slave? Has any Biblical writer ever thought to tell us that slavery is just not cool? Christian countries happened to have the worst record for slavery.Kay in the UK who is curious about how selfless the good acts are when people are told by god to do good things. We don't want to dismiss someone's good acts. For instance, there are lots of Catholic hospitals that provide necessary health care, but still find ways to push their agenda. How do we allow these people to continue good works yet prevent them from causing harm in their communities? Is it possible to do an act without any kind of benefit to one's self? There is more than one book you can read that talks about right and wrong.Whisper from UT is next who asks if the threat of hell is conducive to society. We don't think the threat of hell is good for anyone. We are often raised in a church to believe that we can't do anything without god, and that leads to us not having confidence. What if hell is a really great place? This is something we need to talk about more in our community. Recovering From Religion is a great resource for this. We don't think hell is real and no, it should not be used as a motivation. Thank you everyone for tuning in, remember the essential workers and we will see you next week!

We have the dynamic dual of Secular Rarity and Student Doctor Ben for today's episode of Talk Heathen who will take calls from atheists on subjects that cause us to dig deep for answers. First caller is Austin in TX who sees a benefit in having a defined difference between atheists and agnostics. What happens when you press people about the labels they assign themselves? We may be having miscommunication when we compare one broad category to a smaller one. It is easy to be charitable when communicating with someone by using the definition that person attributes to their label. You will need to work further into what the person's label means at some point during the conversation. Jasmine in Canada would like some opinions on assisted dying. Someone dying of cancer is not going through an easy time and it is hard to understand the amount of pain involved. This is done when the person is able to make the decision themselves. It is important in health care to balance autonomy and beneficence, and oftentimes autonomy takes precedence. Nate in Ohio sees that many religions require certitude and believing things without evidence by not suspending their disbelief. How does knowing this change the landscape? We don't know what metric to use that differentiates people who suspend their disbelief and those that don't. This could be a technique, but we don't know if this can be accepted as a definition. Steven in AZ observes a rage that has been released within groups that are driven by fear and different communities have been developed by evolution. What factors have led to this and what has changed from the tribal focus time period to now? How would you determine if we are more altruistic now than we were a long time ago? How do we measure how altruistic one group is over another? We like to hope we are going in that direction, but we just don't know. The more we ask this question, the more likely we are to make it happen. Nate in CA has an idea that Jesus was actually a clone of Mary and therefore we have the gender wrong. Even if Jesus had been a clone of Mary, he can still engage as a man and therefore would not change the story. What matters is how a person presents in society, not the assigned gender at birth. Student Doctor Ben is TransJesus. Brandi in MA who says that altruism and religion do not have anything to do with each other because we have observed altruism with archaic humans. It is always worth remembering that the religious community does not have a stranglehold on being a good person. Russell in VA is dating a woman who is a member of a church in the Philippines that controls their congregation to extreme levels. Recovering From Religion has trained individuals that can help with these difficult moments. Thank you for tuning in! We will see you next week!

Greetings heathens and theists! Today we have the amazing combo of Kenneth Leonard and Richard Gilliver who will tackle calls from a variety of atheists and repeat caller, Setuf.First up is Hawk from IL who is troubled by being told by theists that he never really believed and is now wondering if that is the case. Normally when people say that you never really believed, it is a tactic to get away from whether their own beliefs are legit. Recovering From Religion is an excellent resource to help with this kind of struggle. What is relevant is whether you believed true things, not things that are false.Next up is Setuf from Spain who states it is not possible to not be a vegan and be against animal cruelty at the same time. If someone consumed surplus milk from a cow on a farm, it that animal cruelty? What does this have to do with whether there is a god or not, and how is it relevant to our show? This is not Talk Vegan.Next is Ruth in CA who was traumatized by being kicked out of church when she was around eight years old because she asked about how people repopulated after Noah's Ark. Her dad was an atheist and her mom is a Seventh Day Adventist. They never brought up religion to each other and stuck by that. Her friend was married to a born again pastor and would claim that god created everything, including the science show they were watching together. How does she know god created this? Ruth, you are an awesome breath of fresh air and we can listen to you all day!Tanjil from Au is next with a point about Buddhism being full of spirits and misogyny. There is a question about many schools of Buddhism there are. Are any of these schools absent of spirits or misogyny? Where did the conception come from that Buddhism is a secular religion? If the whole model is about obtaining nirvana, isn't that where the misogyny comes in since one must be re-birthed as a male?Gene in Texas was raised in a strict church, but managed to never be indoctrinated. When his mom read the story of Adam and Eve to him, it seemed like a weird fairy tale. His mom told him it was real and he wondered why she would lie to him like that. Oftentimes what one believes boils down to lineage and what the ancestors believed. There are plenty of intelligent people who are believers and we do not like when others in the atheist community paint the religious as dumb. Be tuned in to your own vulnerability and be careful not to believe things for the wrong reasons. It looks like all our religious viewers got raptured or maybe it is daylight savings. That is all folks, take care and see you next show.

On todays episode of Hell Has an Exit, Bryan invites long-time friend and Minister Danny Prada to share how his spiritual journey began and how it came to be what it is today. Growing up a conservative Christian Danny encountered a point in his life where he began to face serious doubts about religion after coming in contact with some difficult elements in his life. After unknowingly joining a cult, he realized that almost all religion is competing.  After years of study and research he started a Bible study based on the Christian Bible. This soon evolved into a more open and understanding theology that invited all religions and all beliefs into the church. This new theology brought some serious anger from the Christian community that Danny had grown up in. He was basically ostracized and soon found himself alone. Danny had trained to be a servant of the people with more than five years on the front lines of the most desperate cases as a chaplain at the rescue mission. He was committed to giving his life and service of others.  His Bible study grew into the Heartway Church and his ministry group. After studying the mystics and the great teachings of all religions, Danny realized he had to find a way to open up his church to the LGBTQ community and continued his evolution as a pastor in modern times. Today he runs a passionate group of people who seek to evolve their humanity and find real spiritual truth and peace through the trials and tribulations of life. Don's miss this important episode. If this year has taught us anything, it’s that for better or for worse, the world we’ve created doesn’t look like the one we were born into. There is little in our evolutionary history that has prepared us for Zoom meetings and 4chan conspiracies and while the next big idea may be just around the corner it’s worth remembering that our culture isn’t necessarily in step with our biology. What this means for the way we understand gender is anybody’s guess but this week Kara Griffin from Recovering From Religion joins Arden and Christy in exploring enby identities through different cultural lenses, unpacking our assumptions and taking your calls!

This week's guest is former evangelical pastor, and yet still remains a person of faith--Bill Prickett. Bill is currently the co-host of the Recovering From Religion podcast, and is speaking out about his time as a pastor--and survivor of evangelical "conversion therapy." In conservative evangelical circles, coming out as gay is one of the most difficult journeys to navigate. They can't admit that you were born that way, or made that way by God--as in most evangelical's views, homosexuality is one of the worst sins people can engage in. So in their view--God has a vested interest in making you straight again...and not only was Bill a victim of this system, as a pastor he promoted it for years. Tweet Is there a place for religion in the world today? History demonstrates that humanity is incurably religious…we can't seem to separate humans from their beliefs. But it is a demonstrable fact that religion, and religionism, have done tremendous amounts of damage over the centuries–from religious wars, terrorism in the name of God, religious trauma, cults, and all sorts of religious trauma and sexual abuse. So many people need to recover from the harmful effects of religion that Dr Ray has started two organizations to help people do just that–Recovering from Religion Foundation, as well as the Secular Therapy Project. Find out more about Darrel's work, as well as what might be in your future should you too need to recover from religion. In this episode, Bo Bennett speaks with Sarah Morehead, Executive Director of Recovering From Religion about her personal journey from religion, the Secular Therapist Project, and the Hotline Project. A life-long evangelical Southern Baptist, Sarah spent years as a dutiful wife and mother before finding the courage to leave an abusive marriage. She ultimately let go of her faith, becoming a passionate advocate for growing the secular community by developing resources for practical support as people reconsidering the role of religion in their life. In 2011 she joined the leadership of Recovering From Religion and in 2012 she was appointed the Executive Director. Thanks to her tireless efforts, Recovering From Religion is well known as the bridge of hope for those negatively impacted by religion. In 2014 she was honored with the American Atheists “Atheist of the Year” award for her activism throughout the secular movement and in January 2015 she was elected President of the Reason Rally Coalition. When she is not busy directing RR and organizing events like Apostacon, she enjoys spending time with her family and homeschooling her many children.
