We also hit on the absurdity that Congress gets to trade stocks, a US Supreme Court justice blaming his wife for flying, not one, but two right-wing-like flags outside his home and we emded with the midwest's most whacky foods. Opened the show talking about a couple of odd and funny stories: A Tennessee GOP candidate using A.I. to completely makeover his face into basically another person, Wendy's selling 50-piece chicken nuggets and the new Minnesota tourism slogan, Anthony Edwards' "Bring ya ass," as the Timberwolves get eliminated from the NBA playoffs and traffic cams in Minneapolis.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, I will be discussing the way Nazis were openly welcomed in Nashville by the GOP. Now to be fair, republican office holders did "denounce" the Nazis--but this denunciation was as credible as a hooker's exclamation that her present client is the 'best' they ever had. I will discuss the transition of GOP politics in Tennessee over the past 20 years that has transformed it into one of the most bigoted states in the nation. This development was predictable since the GOP has supported the Nazi-in-Charge, Donald Trump. True leaders--lead by example and not by mere slogans. The example set by Trump is both intellectually and morally bankrupt, so an open Nazi march is no surprise. We will also have our "Deplorable" nominations and our "Jackass of the Week Award."
EMILY's List has been devoted to electing pro-choice Democratic women for 40 years, a mission that's grown only more critical since the fall of Roe. Joining us on "The Downballot" this week is Christina Reynolds, one of EMILY's top officials, to tell us about how her organization recruits, supports, and advises women candidates at all levels of the ballot nationwide. Reynolds explains the unique challenges women face, from a lack of fundraising networks to judgments about their qualifications that never seem to stick to men. She tells us how Dobbs has—and hasn't—changed campaigning for EMILY's endorsees and spotlights a wide range of key races the group is involved in this year.Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also discuss the rollout of the DCCC's first "Red to Blue" list this year, highlighting the most promising Democratic pickup opportunities in the House. While the D-Trip is focused on general elections, the Davids explain why the committee has no choice but to get involved in a California primary thanks to the state's verkakte election rules. And finally, they tear into the Tennessee GOP for a ridiculous set of rule changes designed solely to protect a scandal-plagued incumbent—changes that will probably bite them in the ass before long.Transcript to come.

Two-thirds of those surveyed want current laws to be enforced to remove dangerous people from the public “rather than passing new ones that would leave them in the neighborhood,” according to a co/efficient poll shared exclusively with The Daily Wire. Lee has called for a special session in August to pass the gun legislation, sparking debate within the Tennessee GOP, which is largely made up of staunch pro-Second Amendment conservatives. Lee's office attempted to assuage conservative fears, telling The Daily Wire that the governor's proposal is different from red flag laws passed by other states. “To be clear, the Governor does not support red flag laws. His proposal is different from any law across the country – it would strengthen Tennessee's existing law around the order of protection process for cases of domestic violence and enhance support for law enforcement, ensure due process, require the highest burden of proof, and boost mental health support,” said Press Secretary Jade Byers. It illustrates how more Americans are falling behind on their car payments, which can have ripple effects throughout the economy. Plus, Tennessee state Rep. Campbell, a Republican, is one of the lawmakers who voted to oust two Black lawmakers from the chamber over their protests against gun violence. It's never too early to start talking about the House! Joining us on this week's edition of The Downballot is Inside Elections' Jacob Rubashkin, who offers his thoughts on the overall playing field and a wide range of key contests. Jacob explains why Lauren Boebert might have an easier time of it in her likely rematch, how some candidates have a "special sauce" that allows them to keep winning difficult districts, and why he thinks Mary Peltola is favored for re-election despite Alaska's persistent red lean.Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also marvel at how the Tennessee GOP scored a remarkable own-goal in booting state Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, who've now already returned to the chamber with dramatically enhanced profiles; dissect the very obvious ploy by Montana Republicans to tilt the 2024 Senate election their way by changing the primary rules for just that one race; and break down a new Daily Kos Elections analysis of the 23 states that could add protections for abortion rights to their constitutions.Transcript available here.
Protests have continued after last month's school shooting in Nashville, including in the Tennessee state legislature where the majority Republicans expelled two Democrats after their protests broke the rules of decorum. What was really accomplished by this extreme response, and what's really behind the rise of retaliation politics? Then, Skye talks to Alan Noble about his new book, “On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden and Gift of Living.” Noble says we've believed the lies that life is supposed to be pleasurable, that suffering is abnormal, and that our feelings are a reflection of reality. Instead, at a time when depression, anxiety, and loneliness are skyrocketing, he shows how our faith equips us to suffer well. Plus, scientists have grown mammoth meatballs. Yummy! Hello from Jay's COVID den!Mai would like you to know that she begged Jay to skip recording and rest after he tested positive for COVID, and did the same with Tammy a few weeks ago. They did not listen. Please don't follow their bad example! This week, Tammy and Jay chat with repeat guest Silky Shah, executive director of Detention Watch Network and longtime organizer for immigrant rights. [1:45] We start, though, with a discussion of “Veep,” which Jay has been rewatching—a show that continues to be relevant and prescient ten-plus years on. [14:40] Then we talk about Biden's disappointing policies on immigration, including the continuation of Title 42 and other policies designed to exclude asylum seekers, [50:00] and reflect on some small wins that follow years of organizing by groups like the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON). In this episode, we ask: How do anti-immigration policies actually worsen the same border conditions that some claim to be fighting through deterrence? What makes immigration intersectional? How might the immigrant-rights movement adopt a broader framework of immigrant justice? For more, see: * More on the Biden administration's anti-immigrant moves, including a potential reinstatement of family detention * Hannah Dreier's NYT report about migrant child labor in the U.S.* The fire at a Juárez migrant detention center that killed dozens* A glimmer of good news: DHS expands protections for whistleblowers * The Tennessee GOP's attack on two Black legislatorsPlus, listen to Silky's August 2022 TTSG appearance, Immigration's “catalyst moments,” and a September episode where we discuss Ron DeSantis's migrant-busing stunt: GOP cruelty gone wild. The Tennessee House GOP expelling two young, Black men who are Democrats are called out as hypocritical by Tennessee Black Caucus chair, St. Rep. Sam McKenzie. "To have our two youngest African-American members expelled for a rules violation--a five-to-ten second rules violation--is asinine when they break the rules every day,”
In this episode, Dinesh considers the expulsion of two Democrats by the Tennessee GOP as a classic exhibition of what Republicans do right--and wrong. Dinesh outlines Ron DeSantis' next steps in his continuing effort to teach Disney a lesson. Actor Sean Patrick Flanery. who plays the lead in the supernatural thriller "Nefarious," joins Dinesh in-studio to talk about the theological, political and artistic elements of this new film. On this edition of The Critical Hour, co-hosts Dr. Wilmer Leon and Garland Nixon talk to Attorney John Burris about Jacob Blake, a Black man from Wisconsin who was shot multiple times in the back by police with his kids present."Two Wisconsin police officers were on leave Monday as state authorities investigate why an African American man was shot multiple times in the back as he entered the driver's side door of an SUV, officials said" CNN reported Monday. "The man's three children - 3, 5 and 8 - were in the car, a family attorney said. Identified by the governor as Jacob Blake, the man is in serious condition and fighting for his life." Where should we be focusing our analysis right now?The New York Times reported Monday, "After Coronavirus cases surged in June and July, the number of new reported cases in the US began to level off, then drop, though the infection rate remains one of the world's highest." Is this an accurate statement?"Tennessee protesters will face harsh penalties, including losing the right to vote, as punishment for participating in protests under a law enacted by the Tennessee GOP-dominant General Assembly," Common Dreams reported on Saturday. "Right-wing Governor Bill Lee quietly signed off on the bill Thursday, AP reported." How concerned should we be about Americans' First Amendment right to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances? There's a great piece in The Grayzone by Aaron Mate entitled "Crushing US Sanctions Devastate Syria's People and Post-War Reconstruction." It's an interview with leading Syria scholar Joshua Landis on how "crippling US sanctions are devastating Syria's people and hindering post-war reconstruction." International journalist Caleb Maupin gives his thoughts on this controversial issue. There's a piece at Antiwar.com entitled "Catapulting Russian-Meddling Propaganda," whose subhead reads, "The New York Times is leading the full-court press to improve on what it regards as Special Counsel Robert Mueller's weak-kneed effort to blame the Russians for giving us Donald Trump." What are we to make of this article?"Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says US demand for Iran sanctions is ‘completely unreasonable,'" read a Saturday headline in the South China Morning Post. The outlet reported, "On Thursday, the US formally asked the UN to trigger the 'snapback,' a mechanism under the 2015 nuclear accord that allows a participant to restore pre-2015 sanctions on Iran, on the grounds that Tehran has significantly violated the agreement." What are we to make of this? The South China Morning Post reported Saturday that "on Friday the USS Ronald Reagan and its carrier strike group returned to the South China Sea for a series of air defense exercises after a joint drill with Japan. The US Navy also sent a destroyer, the USS Mustin, through the Taiwan Strait following the exercise with Japan in what America said was a demonstration of its commitment to a 'free and open Indo-Pacific.'" The People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command, which covers the Taiwan Strait, said after the Mustin's passage that the military was monitoring US activity and was on “high alert” to protect China's territorial integrity and sovereignty, the Post noted."In the wake of the deadly port explosion in Beirut, Lebanon on August 4, many in Yemen are hoping that the world, and the United States and Saudi-led Coalition, in particular, will have gained a renewed sense of urgency in working to avoid a similar disaster off the coast of Yemen in the heavily traveled Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the worlds' busiest international shipping lanes," MintPress News reported on August 21. "There, the FSO Safer sits roughly 25 miles northwest of Yemen's port city of Hodeida, not only threatening the poorest country in the Middle East but also posing a very real threat to all countries bordering the Red Sea and to international navigation in general." During the service they drank holy wine and exchanged or renewed wedding vows. Protesters and state police were outside the church and a school across the street bused students across town to another campus. During the service the Rev. Sean Moon prayed for “a kingdom of peace police and peace militia where the citizens, through the right given to them by almighty God to keep and bear arms, will be able to protect one another and protect human flourishing." Florida state senator thinks thoughts and prayers are the only solution http://bit.ly/2D1AcLz The state of Florida debated, passed, and then rescinded an assault rifle ban. One republican voting against the bill was state senator Kelli Stargel. She's also interested in limiting gun sales to those under 21, increasing mental health services, and increasing the amount of armed personnel on school campuses, but ultimately… The Tennessee GOP and Lt. Gov. have attacked a special election candidate for the state senate because of her atheism http://bit.ly/2H8gkJ0 Gayle Jordan is the executive director of Recovering from Religion and she's also running for the Tennessee State Senate in a special election. A few weeks ago the state Republican Party Chairman Scott Golden called on voters to reject her because she is a quote “radical atheist”. On March 1 Lt Gov Randy McNally went to social media and wrote: "In my 40 plus years in Tennessee politics, I've seen few candidates as dangerous as Gayle Jordan. She is not just out of step with a majority of Tennessee on matters of policy. She is out of step on matters of values and faith. In her daily work, she directs an organization called “Recovering from Religion.” Most Tennesseans, whether they are strong believers or not, recognize the strength and comfort faith provides. Gayle Jordan rejects faith as a positive force for good in the world. She believes faith is something from which people need to be rescued. This is not the type of person we need in the Tennessee Senate." An atheist in Ohio is suing over the court mandated religious addiction treatment program he has to attend http://bit.ly/2Hb8ZZ1 James Lindon was convicted of drug possession and theft for stealing five hydrocodone pills from the clinic he was working as a pharmacist at and convicted of tampering with evidence for swallowing four of the five pills when confronted by security guards. He was sentenced to a month in a substance abuse program and two years of probation. He's now suing because the program is Alcoholics Anonymous which requires people to submit to a higher power and he's an atheist, thus this court ordered program violates his religious freedom.
