What does materialism, Big-Bang cosmology, and Mormonism all have in common? Can we really work toward becoming a god of our own world? What does a mid-twentieth century interpretation of quantum mechanics have to do with Latter-Day Saint theology? And just exactly how can the Gospel help us better understand how to respond to these complex issues? This is part two of our rather unique dialogue with president of Watchman Fellowship and former 4th-generation Latter-Day Saint James K. Walker and astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr. Luke Barnes, plus some bonus material from some of our previous podcasts you won't want to miss!Luke A. Is it possible for us to become a god? Do mathematics tell us that there are many universes? Is there any evidence of other universes? This week and next on the Profile, we guarantee that in all of the some five million podcasts out there today, you won't likely find the the topics of Many Worlds, Mormonism, and Multiverses covered in the same episode. The next two episodes will be somewhat unique, but we think they cover a lot of lesser-known ideas that have some overlap. Many who leave the Latter-Day-Saint faith turn to atheism. But neither Mormonism nor an atheistic materialism are in accordance with the true story of the cosmos.Luke A. Barnes is a Senior Lecturer in astronomy and cosmology. The Know Your Rights Podcast: Family Law Essentials: A Concise Guide

Law School

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2024 18:45

Family law is a branch of the legal system that deals with issues relating to family relationships, such as marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Understanding the basics of family law can help individuals navigate these often complex and emotionally charged issues. 1. Marriage and Legal Aspects. Marriage is a legal contract that establishes rights and obligations between the partners. Legal aspects of marriage include eligibility (age, consent, and capacity to marry), marital rights (to support, inherit, and share property), and responsibilities (support obligations and liability for family debts). Prenuptial agreements, which define terms in case of a divorce, also fall under this category. 2. Divorce and Separation. Divorce legally dissolves a marriage. Issues addressed in a divorce include: Division of Property: Determining who gets what, either based on community property (assets and debts shared equally) or equitable distribution (assets and debts divided fairly but not necessarily equally). Alimony or Spousal Support: Payments from one spouse to another to maintain the standard of living they had during marriage. Grounds for Divorce: These can be "fault," such as adultery or abuse, or "no-fault," based on irreconcilable differences. 3. Child Custody and Support. Child custody determines with whom the children will live after a divorce and how decisions about the children will be made. Custody can be: Legal Custody: The right to make decisions about the child's upbringing, including education, health care, and religious training. Physical Custody: Where and with whom the child lives. Child support is a payment by the non-custodial parent to the custodial parent towards the expenses of raising the child. The amount is typically based on state guidelines and considers the income of both parents, the needs of the child, and custody arrangements. 4. Adoption. Adoption creates a new, permanent parent-child relationship. It can be through agencies or privately arranged. Legal processes ensure the adoptee's best interests are served, which include termination of the biological parents' rights, assessment of adoptive parents' suitability, and legal recognition of the new family relationship. Conclusion Family law addresses the most personal and fundamental aspects of our lives. Those facing family law issues are encouraged to seek knowledgeable legal advice to navigate these complex areas effectively. Understanding these essentials empowers individuals to manage the legal challenges that can arise in family relationships. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/support

In this episode, we review clinical pearls and common pitfalls of immunosuppression regimens for organ transplantation with a particular focus on tacrolimus and mycophenolate. Key Concepts Most recipients of an organ transplantation will be on a two or three drug regimen. The most common regimen is tacrolimus and mycophenolate with/without a corticosteroid. Tacrolimus is hepatically eliminated and susceptible to CYP3A4 and PGP drug interactions. Particularly at higher drug concentrations, it is associated with nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity (among several other adverse effects). Mycophenolate is unstable in the acidic environment of the stomach. The two formulations on the market are CellCept (which uses a prodrug, mycophenolate mofetil, that is converted in the liver to an active compound) and Myfortic (an enteric-coated formulation of mycophenolic acid, which releases after exiting the stomach). The intensity of an immunosuppression regimen is determined by numerous factors, including the type of organ, how long ago the organ was transplanted, if acute rejection has occurred in the past, patient-specific risk factors, and more. Welcome to the second episode of our three-part series with Sinora, where we talk about what real healing looks and feels like. The first episode provides us with a glimpse of Sinora's path toward becoming a holistic practitioner and how one's experience could be a catalyst for that. We also discussed the essence of going beyond our titles, so we can truly embrace who we truly are, discover what we are meant to do on this planet, and even lead us on the right road of recovery. Our second episode is medically charged, where we dive deep into the idea of holistic healing and what it truly is. In here, Sinora further elaborates her journey to finding the answers to her unexplained fertility and then getting on the path of recovery for good. Lastly, we touch on the strong connection between mind and body - what you think is what you manifest. Sinora illustrates that by sharing how gratitude eased her physical pain and challenged negative thoughts. Here's what was covered in this episode: Uncover the root cause of most diseases and how some aspects of conventional medicine might be making it worse Know why medicine should be individualized (what works for many doesn't mean it could work for you!) Find out what inflammation is, how it affects the body, and how it manifests Unlock the immense power of gratitude Learn the real meaning of detox and how it preps the body for a reset

Martin Luther said of the Epistle to the Romans: This epistle is really the chief part of the New Testament, and is truly the purest gospel. It is worthy not only that every Christian should know it word for word, by heart, but also that he should occupy himself with it every day, as the daily bread of the soul. We can never read it or ponder over it too much; for the more we deal with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it tastes.

How can we have a conversation about the Quran with our Muslim friend without it becoming confrontational? This week on The Land and the Book, we’ll introduce you to A Concise Guide to the Quran. Plus, Charlie Dyer continues his devotional series, Seven Stories with a Purpose. That’s all ahead this week on The Land and the Book.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is part two of a rebroadcast of a live panel discussion between two atheists and two theists. The panel featured our very own President of Watchman Fellowship James Walker. If you have not listened to the first part, we suggest listening to that broadcast first for more context for part two. How do we have productive conversations in our day and age with those who not only do not believe in God but are actively outspoken against God's existence? There is no easy, one-size-fits-all method for giving a defense for the hope that is in us by any means, but we believe this conversation can serve as at least one example. As you listen to the conversation, ask yourself how you might respond to the topics and questions discussed. Perhaps you have had these questions asked of you by non-Christians before. We hope this conversation can encourage and equip you to give a defense for your faith with gentleness and respect. We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses and people will indeed ask you some of what you'll hear on our broadcast today. So be ready! Special thanks to Jim Hall of the Atheist Edge YouTube channel for permission to rebroadcast this for Apologetics Profile.  CONTENT WARNING: This has been edited for time and to remove explicit language. We may be quite familiar with the biblical exhortation from 1 Peter 3:15 to be ready to give a defense for the hope that is in us with gentleness and respect, but in our day and age where dialogue with those with whom we disagree is so polarized and divisive, we may easily forget what 1 Peter 3:15 looks like in practice. For the next two broadcasts of Apologetics Profile, we're stepping away from our normal "interview" format to bring you a special rebroadcast in two parts of a panel discussion between two atheists and two theists. One of those panel participants is James Walker, President of Watchman Fellowship. James was asked to appear on the panel by long-time friend of James', Jim Hall, himself a lifelong atheist. The challenge for the panel was to "trade places" with each other, with the atheists offering what they believed were the best arguments for God's existence and the weakest arguments for atheism, while the theists were challenged to offer what they thought were the strongest arguments for atheism and the weakest arguments for God's existence. The discussion was civil and cordial and we believe serves as a good example of how to put into practice what 1 Peter 3:15 tells us. We hope it serves to encourage you to have more informed and civil conversations in your own engagement with your non-Christian neighbors and friends. Special thanks to Jim Hall of Atheist Edge for permission to rebroadcast this for Apologetics Profile. CONTENT WARNING: This has been edited for time and to remove explicit language. Suicide is an ever present part of our human experience, be it through an acquaintance, friend, or family member taking their own life, or something even more personal, such as suicidal thoughts and attempts. When faced with suicide, whether it's as close as someone coming to you for help, or as distant as media reports, it can be daunting to know what to do and if you could have done something to prevent it. In this RfRx discussion, Dr. Andy Thomson will walk us through how to assess the signs, how to understand why suicide is a human universal, as well as why the risks are higher for veterans, trauma survivors, members of the LGBT+ community, and health care professionals. Dr Andy Thomson is a psychiatrist at University of Virginia Student Health Services. The 9/11 attacks triggered an interest in suicide terrorism, which led to the discovery of an unappreciated world of research into how and why human minds generate religious beliefs. Andy has written “Why We Believe In God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith” which brings that world to anyone interested. On part two president of Watchman Fellowship, James Walker, concludes his keynote on the nature of God and the Trinity presented at the Witness Now for Jesus Ex-Jehovah's Witness conference. We examine the history behind some of the classic heretical teachings that confronted the early Christianity, how they reappear in our time and how you can recognize them. We hope these insights will give you practical and edifying truths as you give a defense for the hope that is in you to friends, family, and loved ones who don't know Jesus. As we learned last week, the doctrine of God as Three-in-One, the Trinity, is absolutely central to our faith. Any deviation from understanding this teaching inevitably results in false doctrines and heresy. Historical councils of the Church throughout history have rigorously addressed the aberrant views of the Trinity, such as the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.) and the Council of Chalcedon (451 A.D.). Yet despite these efforts, heretical doctrines regarding the nature of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit resurface in non-Christian religions and cults. How might you address objections to God as Three-in-One? Are you prepared to give a defense of the Trinity? What would you say to a Mormon who might object that the word "Trinity" is not found in the Bible, or a Muslim who says it is blasphemy to refer to God as three distinct Persons? What might you say to someone who argues Jesus is not God? Or that only the Father is God? How might you answer someone who would claim God is not really three Persons, but just appears to us in three different modes?James Walker is a former fourth-generation Mormon who is currently president of Watchman Fellowship, an evangelical apologetics ministry focused on interfaith evangelism. He is author of The Concise Guide to Today's Religions and Spirituality (watchman.org/ConciseGuide), What the Qur'an Really Teaches about Jesus (watchman.org/Quran), and coauthor of The Truth Behind The Secret (bit.ly/TruthSecret). Was Jesus the creator of all things or was He actually a created being? Creator or creature? God with us or the angel Michael with us? These are foundational questions for Jehovah's Witnesses and other controversial religions. This two-part episode of Apologetics Profile features Watchman Fellowship president, James Walker, sharing a keynote message given at the Witness Now for Jesus Conference of former Jehovah's Witnesses. This message provides helpful reminders and insights about the uniqueness and wonder of seeing God as One God and as three distinct Persons. The doctrine of the Trinity can be difficult to wrap our minds around, but it is absolutely foundational for our faith. No matter where you are in your walk with Christ, we hope this presentation will be helpful and edifying to you this Christmas season as you reach out to those who don't know Christ. So come and see! Come and celebrate the incarnate Immanuel, God with us, the Babe lying in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes who is also Creator and Lord of the heavens and earth. James Walker is a former fourth-generation Mormon who is currently president of Watchman Fellowship, an evangelical apologetics ministry focused on interfaith evangelism. Substance and alcohol abuse is so prevalent around the world that very few people have not succumbed to its temptation or know someone who has. There is substantial evidence that we and our ancient relatives used substances as antimicrobials and antiparasitic agents. A byproduct was these substances' ability to disable our prefrontal cortex, inhibit our inner chimp and stimulate our inner bee, to become the ultra social, eusocial organism that we are. Substances provide some of the same benefits as religion, helping to bind genetic strangers together and not teaching evolution impairs the understanding of this phenomena. This week's episode dives into what happened after the Constitution was signed—when it had to be approved “we the people,” a process known as ratification—and the arguments made on behalf of the Constitution. A major collection of those arguments was The Federalist, today often referred to as The Federalist Papers, which were a collection of essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay using the pen name Publius that they circulated around the country. Our guests Judge Gregory Maggs, author of the article “A Concise Guide to the Federalist Papers as a Source of the Original Meaning of the United States Constitution,” and Colleen Sheehan, professor and co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to the Federalist, shed light on the questions: What did the Federalist papers say? What did their writers set out to do? What were their authors reading and becoming inspired by when they wrote them? How widely were they read? What was so original about their thinking? And how are they continually used today, including in opinions written by various Supreme Court justices? Jeffrey Rosen hosts. In this RfRx session Andy Thomson will deliver a presentation on the basic mechanisms the mind uses to produce and accept religious beliefs. He will explore multiple topics such as human evolution, the neurobiology of ritual or how certain cognitive mechanisms generate religion. Andy Thomson is a psychiatrist at University of Virginia Student Health Services. The 9.11 attacks triggered an interest in suicide terrorism, which led to the discovery of an unappreciated world of research into how and why human minds generate religious beliefs. Andy has written “Why We Believe In God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith” which brings that world to anyone interested. Hosted by Gayle Jordan, RfR Executive Director, and Medelin Nolasco, RfR Volunteer & RfRx Social Host. Recorded on March 22, 2021. Nate would recommend A Concise Guide to Reading the New Testament by David Nienhuis as a helpful resource on not just Luke, but the rest of the New Testament. We would also recommend the Lexham Geographic Commentary on the Gospels for insight into many of Jesus’ teachings and miracles in Luke, as well as the other Gospels. Listeners will also find the chapter in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament: The Gospel Realized helpful. More advanced readers will benefit from The Feasts of Repentance: From Luke-Acts to Systematic and Pastoral Theology by Michael Ovey. It is part of the New Studies in Biblical Theology series that we would all recommend. The insight that Nate mentioned connecting Luke 24 to Genesis 3 comes from N. T. Wright’s Jesus and The Victory of God, which while a daunting read, repays the effort as it helps one understand how Matthew, Mark, and Luke relate to each other and the Old Testament as well. From the brilliant New York Times bestselling authors of the “refreshingly blunt” F*ck Feelings—this seriously irreverent roadmap reveals the essentials to look for when you’re done being suckered by the promise of true love and want help seeking a real, lasting relationship. Instead of helping readers find true love (also known as “total bullshit”), Dr. Michael Bennett and his comedy-writing daughter Sarah reveal the practical, commonsense criteria for good partnerships. Dr. Michael I. Bennett (Harvard University ’66, Harvard Medical School ’70) is a board-certified psychiatrist, Canadian, and Red Sox fan. While he’s worked in every aspect of his field, from hospital administration to managed care, his major interest is his private practice which he’s been running for almost 30 years. A distinguished fellow in the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Bennett also spent many years as a member of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society, serving as president in 2004-2005. He’s the author of The Concise Guide to Managing Behavioral Health Care Within a Managed Care Environment, which, to put it mildly, is a dry read. He and his wife, who is also a psychiatrist and doesn’t much care for the title of this book, live in Boston. F*ck Love, published by Touchstone, is his second book with daughter Sarah Bennett. This time of year is magic time… 2016 is almost over but 2017 is ahead with its infinite possibilities. So my question is this: are you living your best life possible given all you learned this year? Renowned visionary Edgar Cayce once said: “Each soul has a definite job to do. But only you alone may find and do that job.” Tonight, we're going to explore that sentiment fully with one of the country's most acclaimed intuitives. Meet Joyce Keller, America's #1 Psychic Love Coach. Featured on Oprah and many other shows, she is an author, and psychic medium who has hosted a live radio show since 1989 on New York's WGBB. Joyce has also been featured in both editions of the book, 100 Top Psychics in America and has authored seven international best-selling books including Why Am I Here? Listen NowDespite signifcant press coverage over the past four and a half years many provisions of the Affordable Care Act remain largely unknown to the American public.  Polling data shows slightly less than half of Americans know the ACA is still law, over half said they've heard nothing about the state marketplaces and over a third do not know there's a penalty for not having health insurance.  More generally, researchers have found Americans have a low health insurance literacy rate.  Less than half of those polled were unable to describe an insurance deductable.   None of this is surprising when you realize how complicated health care financing and delivery is.  For example, the recently published final rule that describes changes to how Medicare will pay physicians in 2015 was well over 1,000 pages.  During this 20 minute interview Dr. Moore discusses the reasons he and Dr. Askin wrote the book, some of their findings, what he was surprised to learn and how health care is delievered in the US, how research and writing the volume changed his practice, reaction to, and use of, the work and changes in the soon-to-be-released second edition.       Nathan Moore is an resident physician in internal medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. When he and his colleague Elisabeth Askin were in medical school at Washington University, they wrote The Health Care Handbook, A Clear and Concise Guide to the United States Health Care System. To date, approximately 60 medical schools and hospital residency programs have incorporated this handbook into their core curriculum.  Dr. Moore has been a featured speaker at dozens of medical schools, universities and health professions conferences and is currently working on the 2nd edition of the Handbook.  The 2nd edition is anticipated to be released this month. To learn more about "The Health Care Handbook" go to: http://healthcarehandbook.wustl.edu/ This is a public episode.
