Mike's Minute: It's about time we had move-on orders

The Mike Hosking Breakfast

It's taken a while but we got there at last. Move-on orders. Clear lines of responsibility and delineation for police to actually fix a problem that has existed for too long in our central city areas. As the debate bounces back and forward this week have a look at those who ask "where do they go?" They ask that because it's the easy question to ask. It's the point-scoring question to ask. It's the question you ask when you don't actually have to deal with the problem. The previous Government, who will be one of the people asking that very question, stuck them in motels and ruined entire towns like Rotorua. They stuck them in social housing and ruined entire neighbourhoods, as the agency responsible evicted exactly zero people despite antisocial, and often criminal, behaviour. In other words they gave greater priority to troubled menaces than they did to wider society that simply wanted to get on with life. Downtowns, whether Wellington, Christchurch or Auckland, need help and have needed help for years. We were at lunch a couple of weeks ago in the central city for a birthday. The drugged-out woman screaming her head off on the bench outside was doing her best to ruin everyone's Saturday. The music in the restaurant had to be turned up to a level that you could no longer hear each other talk. But what was the proprietor supposed to do? What is any business supposed to do when you have to step over the down and out, the drugged out and the violent, simply to unlock your door? The apologists paint these people as harmless. They are not. They paint them as lost and wayward. They are not. They are law breakers who cause a disproportionate amount of trouble to people who don't deserve it. As a result of an apologist mentality no one has known what to do, like retail crime and Yaris' through windows a few years back. Toughen up the laws and you'll be amazed how quickly the problem gets solved. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The foundation provides unbiased, objective advice to the public and national leaders and champions polices and systems aimed at protecting GPS satellites, signals, and users from interference. Today we talk to Dana A. Goward, president of the RNT Foundation and a retired U.S Coast Guard captain. Announced on 12 November by Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, a new proposed legislation would allow alleged offenders as young as 14 to be tried outside the Children's Court and face harsher penalties for serious crimes such as home invasions, carjackings and violent burglaries. Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Brad Battin criticised Premier Allan, saying she couldn't be trusted to reduce crime rates. In this episode, we speak with a Melbourne-based legal expert, Pallini Rudra, to unpack the proposed law and its potential impact.

TODAY'S LESSONLet's be honest—some of the deepest wounds in life don't come from strangers, they come from the Church. A careless word, a betrayal by a leader, gossip that cuts, rejection from people who should have embraced you… church hurt runs deep. And here's the harsh reality: when the wound comes from God's family, it can shake your faith in God Himself. But here's what you need to hear: people may fail you, but Jesus never will. The Church was never perfect, because it's made up of imperfect people. If you expect flawless community, you'll always end up disappointed. But if you set your eyes on Christ, you'll find healing even when others wound you.Psalm 34 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” That means He doesn't stand at a distance saying, “Toughen up.” He draws close. He binds wounds. He restores. And here's the kicker: healing from church hurt isn't just about you. It's also about the Body. Because when we choose bitterness, we stay trapped. But when we choose forgiveness, we free ourselves and open the door for reconciliation. Some of you listening right now—you've been avoiding church because of past hurt. You've written off community because of one wound. And God is saying to you: “Come back. Don't let the pain of people rob you of My Presence in My Body.”The Church doesn't heal because it's perfect. It heals because Christ is present.

Suffering comes from resisting pain, refusing to accept it, thinking it will go away,  But that just makes it worse and leaves you completely unprepared and weak, You'll lose all your defenses and will further crumble when life refuses to obey, But if you can learn to accept the crashing waves, you'll find the strength you seek.   [full text below]   Ep. 419 - Happy Acceptance We begin as always  with the Happy Creed. We believe in Happy,  in Balance and Growth,  of being Mindful and Grateful, Compassionate and Understanding. Yowza Haha My Happy Friends! Acceptance isn't the same as giving up,  Just ‘cause life has pain doesn't mean you quit, Use that pain to temper your steel,  Toughen you up and let you heal,  ‘Cause acceptance isn't the same as giving up. Ever feel drained, bruised, battered, mistreated, abused and taken advantage of? Well, you're not alone, but you survived it, and perhaps you're surviving it still, And you don't know why life is being so mean when all you ever wanted was love, So, you fight ‘cause you think to win you need to be the one with the strongest will. But if you see everything as a conflict, then every interaction becomes a war, Every setback is a battle cry, every mishap a landmine, and everyone a foe, But if you can accept that we're all just trying to survive lives we never signed up for, Then acceptance becomes an act of strength--don't give up, just go with the flow. Because Acceptance isn't the same as giving up,  Just ‘cause life has pain doesn't mean you quit, Use that pain to temper your steel,  Toughen you up and let you heal,  ‘Cause acceptance isn't the same as giving up. I don't know why I just turned into a country singer, I confess, But it's just another thing you gotta learn to accept, I guess. Haha Yowza

Work On Your Game: Discipline, Confidence & Mental Toughness For Sports, Business & Life | Mental Health & Mindset

If you want to make your life more safe, the smartest thing you can do is make sure that everything and everyone around you, including yourself, knows that you are the most dangerous entity in the room. It is like the lion who had escaped from the zoo then walked around the town, and people were getting out of the lion's way. You didn't see any people in the frame with the lion. Why would they be wary of the lion? Because they know what that lion is capable of. What does the lion in the room mean? It means you are the one in the room who everyone knows what it's capable of.  That's who you need to be. Man up. Toughen up. Suck it up. These are common mantras that are drilled into us from the time that we're kids to when we're grown men. It's a narrative that's not just wrong but downright harmful. Today's guest is John D'Agostini. John is a rockstar in the realm of men's excellence who has mentored hundreds of people, from professional athletes and Olympians to high-risk students and regular family men with businesses to be supportive husbands, and even better Dads.  Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? While most dads would say that family matters most, the challenge is they feel guilty knowing their careers get the best of them, and their family seems to get the rest of them. We help Dads become family men with businesses, not businessmen who have families, so they can thrive personally AND professionally.

Toughen up. Be a man. Boys don't cry. Centuries of social conditioning have created a stigma around men's mental health and burnout.  And it's killing them. 75% of suicides are men. Suicide is the biggest cause of death among men under 50. Men experience higher rates of cancer, heart disease and addiction - physical health conditions associated with high-stress lifestyles. Men's mental health, in our workplaces, society and homes, is the conversation we should be having. In a break from our normal format, this episode focuses on a conversation between Co-Host Al Elliott, and our expert guest, Jim Young. Just two 40-something guys discussing uncried tears, burnout and being very f@*king far from ok. It's a conversation you've likely never heard before. Join Al and Jim for an honest, vulnerable conversation about men's mental health, including: What does burnout look like for men? I remember back in high school basketball, when I really began pushing myself and studying how to maximize my potential, I was willing to do stuff that other kids simply wouldn't do.     One of the most feared things every year at tryouts, the day after Thanksgiving, was when Coach would have us run an endless amount of suicides.     He was weeding out the weak.     There were puke buckets on the sides.     So, I ran suicides for months leading up to tryouts my junior year.     Let's just say that tryouts were relatively easy for me, while I got to watch in amusement as the others were dying in their suicides.     I practiced tough, which made the ‘real life' easy.    This is what you want to do with your everyday living.     In today's episode, I discuss 4 simple ideas that you can incorporate every day to ‘steel' your mind.

It doesn't matter how many times you get knocked down. As long as you get back up. Everyone listening to my voice has been down. Some of you are right now. Today I'm going to help you get back up. Adversity is baked into the human experience. Bad things happen to us beyond our control. Bad things happen because of our choices (those can often be worse on our psyches). Sometimes, we feel bad. Sometimes anxious We get rejected. Our plans fall apart. Our kids make mistakes. We lose things. We lose people. And we go down. Today I am going to Talk it up, so I want you to Listen up because I'm going to ask you to Toughen up while you Lighten up at the same time. Then we are going to Light it up, then Follow up and last, but probably most important I'm going to ask you to Look up. If you do these things, you'll get back up. I can't promise it will be easy. I've been down and I know how hard it is to come back. If you are feeling depressed from self-blame, angry from blaming others, or both at the same time, I get you. I feel you. If you listen up, I think I can help you. It's not pious platitudes from pop psychology class. It's the shared experience of a friend who is probably only one or 2 steps ahead of you right now. I'm reaching out for you right now. Take my hand, lend me your ear for another 27 minutes, and let's Get UP.

“Toughen up. Be a man. Don't be so sensitive.”   As a young boy, these are some of the messages you might have heard. Society tells us that men are supposed to be strong, successful and never show emotion.    It's time to challenge the stigma that men can't be sensitive. If you have a tendency to pick up on nuances or think deeply about ideas, it may be because you're a highly sensitive person (HSP).    Highly sensitive people are believed to make up 20% of our population. It's a trait that's equally common among both men and women, yet often misunderstood. My guest today is an author of two important books: Confessions of a Sensitive Man and On Being a Sensitive Man.   On today's episode, William Allen joins me to shed more light on highly sensitive males and the much-needed role they need to take in our society. He shares how we can learn to embrace this gift and live in the world as sensitive men.   We discussed:   4 science-based traits that define a highly sensitive personality Why highly sensitive people often need more alone time than others Redefining masculinity within the scope of being a sensitive man The evolutionary reason why highly sensitive people are here How William overcame perfectionism to embrace his natural talent   Links www.thesensitiveman.com www.brainpilots.com The Highly Sensitive Person quiz   Connect with William on social: https://www.facebook.com/thesensitiveman https://www.linkedin.com/in/wrallen/ https://twitter.com/TheSensitiveMa1 www.instagram.com/zallenw
