In this episode, CJ shares a recent experience of true connection after being invited to a student's home for an artist playdate. Surrounded by different materials and supplies, they created art, exchanged ideas, and rediscovered the joy of in-person community. But why is this kind of gathering so rare today? CJ explores how social media, the “junk food of social life,” gives the illusion of connection but leaves us feeling empty—much like a fast-food meal that satisfies in the moment but lacks real nourishment. From doom-scrolling to quick-click interactions, we've replaced deep relationships with fleeting digital moments.Where are the bookstores, cafés, and gathering spots where we once met new people? Instead of engaging in real-world community, we isolate behind screens. But there's hope.CJ announces his new Creative Spirit Community program, launching this August at Unity Church of Dallas. Meeting on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, this gathering will include a talk, meditation, and small-group discussions to foster genuine connection.Want to start building community today? CJ is offering five free copies of his book to anyone who hosts a book club at home. Or, if nothing else, just pick up the phone and make lunch plans with one friend. Real relationships start with small steps..

06/29/2024, Shosan Victoria Austin, dharma talk at City Center. This talk was given by Shosan Victoria Austin at one of Beginner's Mind Temple's pop-up events at Unity Church on Page St in San Francisco. Sōtō Zen teaches that compassion underlies wisdom, and wisdom underlies compassion. When we take up the question of how to become compassionate humans, it helps to have role models such as The Bodhisattva "Hearer of the Cries of the World" (Kannon Bosatsu), our grandmothers and grandfathers. Some contemporary methods of skill in compassion include Paula Arai's Way of Healing, David Treleaven's Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness, and Roshi Joan Halifax's G.R.A.C.E. Practicing compassion does not erase the pain and suffering of the world, but it helps us respond accurately, in nourishing ways. With the steadfastness of pine and the resilience of bamboo, we can help give life to ourselves and those around us in whatever states arise.

We often need to be reminded that God's will for us is perfect happiness. This includes meeting our every need. “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.” It, therefore, should be our good pleasure to receive it. And by expecting it, we are demonstrating our gratitude (good pleasure) for the kingdom in advance. On this episode, Darrell and Ed highlight the truth that gratitude, not fear, opens the door to our greater good. Registered New Thought Nurse, from Unity Church of Chatsworth, Michaelle Washington proves that Faith is the best medicine with today's reading, “Living Victoriously”. Awakening Together, Relaxing into Happiness with William Cooper, M.Th., LPC

What are mantras and how do we use them?  In part 1 we explore a meditation inspired by Transcendental Meditation and its' use of mantras with no meaning.  Next we look at the awakening meditation's use of mantras from the heart.  Sathya Sai Baba observed, "A pure thought from a pure heart is better than a mantra".   We explore this heart mantra in relation with the Unity Church mantra, "There is one presence and one power moving in and through us - in divine and perfect order."  We'll practice some of these mantra based meditations in the podcasts following part 2.  You pick which ones work best for you.

There is one spiritual discipline that is often considered the gateway to lasting enlightenment.  Through this, we can be free from the enslavement of the overactive mind and cultivate a life of Oneness.  In the last episode, I started our conversation about spirituality by asking you what is it and why does it matter.  I don't think it matters if it is not tangibly and measurably improving your life.  I like talking about this first step towards enlightenment because it tangibly creates little moments of heaven throughout the day and if incorporated into your daily life, will inevitably shift your consciousness.   Support the show

We've all heard the term Mindfulness as it has become front and center over the past few years. There are meditation groups, silence groups, yoga groups and untold others, all created to support the achievement of mindfulness. Then there are books, online trainings, social media gurus and more. Simultaneously it has become common to hear admonishments to stay out of the mind and be in the moment. It's enough to drive one's mind into an endless spin about what is and isn't this thing called ‘mindfulness.' I've come to the personal conclusion that it is whatever brings peace and balance. The means of getting there is far less relevant than the ‘emotional state' of where we are in our own skin.  Anne Sermons Gillis is the leading expert in ease, which is key to mindfulness. She teaches people how to have accomplishment without struggle. Anne helps people see, feel and understand how vulnerability, which so many fear, is in fact one of our greatest superpowers. Leading people into Radical Authenticity and Radical Vulnerability through deliveries that are energized and fun, she gives people an entrance point to their deeper selves that is gentle and accessible. Understanding that healing the pain does not have to be painful Anne has offered a pathway to internal emancipation to people worldwide. Tune in as Anne offers Lesley and the listeners the clarity that there are levels to mindfulness, defines what they are and explains how to easily rest into them.   Anne Sermons Gillis, MS, is an inter-spiritual minister, a life coach, and an author. She is often referred to as the Minister of Mirth. She confounded Connection Church in 1984 (Connection Center for Spiritual Growth) in Memphis, TN, and served as the senior spiritual guide until 1998. Her wisdom, humor, and exuberant presentation style make learning fun. Armed with years of experience in human dynamics, Gillis consistently delivers more than promised. She teaches people how to have accomplishment without struggle by presenting refreshing material that is immediately accessible. “Life is not meant to be a series of to-do lists punctuated by eating and sleeping.” says Gillis. She is the author of 5 books and founder of the EZosophy philosophy. Anne is on the board of Directors of the Theosophical Order of Service and a national speaker for the National Theosophical Society. She is a member of Unity Church of Charleston and the Indio Sangha and practices engaged Buddhism. She lives in Summerville, S. C. with her husband, Jim, and their dog, Lucy.   Watch video version HERE http://annegillis.com/ anne@annegillis.com or 713.922.0242 Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-sermons-gillis-a49a299/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annesermonsgillis/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/AnneSGillis Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheEZSecret/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/agillis/

Sober Shares - Alcoholics Anonymous Recovery Interviews

Welcome home friend, to a very special edition of Sober Shares. Over the next four episodes you will hear a set of AA talks given by my late sponsor Jimmy Daniel's. This type of AA talk is commonly referred to as “DOING THE STEPS”. Jimmy got sober on June 10th, 1982 and went on to help thousands of alcoholics get and stay sober. I asked Jimmy to be my AA sponsor during my 5th year of sobriety. I was sponsoring myself at the time and having a hard time with life. I knew I needed help and was actively going to recovery meetings to try and find it. I heard Jimmy speak one night at the Unity Church of Dallas. That night changed the course of my life in and out of the rooms of AA. He reached down into my soul that night and shook me awake with his honesty about who he was, where he came from and maybe more importantly where he was going. I approached him in the parking lot after the meeting as he was walking to his car and asked him to be my AA sponsor. He said yes and we began our journey together that night. The first and only question he asked me that night was, “Michael, how is your prayer life”?Over the next several years he lead me closer and closer to my High Power and it was glorious. Jimmy is my guy, he was everybody's guy. His life story is an epic journey from the bottom of life to the glorious victory of a deep and heavy spiritual awakening that he ached to share with others. This series of talks was recorded in 2005 and can be heard on the Sober Shares Podcast in episodes 29, 30, 31, and 32. Not just acknowledge, why it's worth the effort to embrace your shadow and unleash its power! Darkness and light. You hear it all the time, that we're made up of both. I think the best visual representative of that is the yin and yang symbol. Black and white. Each has a dot of the other inside. Balanced. Perfect. Visually pleasing. Why does darkness or specifically, shadow get such a bad rap?  It's weird because when I make art, I need shadows AND light to define shape. Both are of equal importance, there's no value judgment. So, why do we judge darkness and light attributes of ourselves differently? Thomas Campbell answers the question, “What Is Consciousness”. He is a physicist, lecturer, and author of the My Big TOE (Theory of Everything) trilogy. In the books, he discusses the origins of consciousness and brings together science and philosophy, physics and metaphysics, mind and matter, purpose and meaning, as well as the normal and the paranormal. The writings are based on the simulation argument, which takes the position that reality is both virtual and subjective. He is here to answer the question,”What Is Consciousness?”. You know, when I was meditating, I didn't use the breathing type of meditation, I used the mantra type. But I don't say mantras anymore and I don't need to; I can be in a meditation state in an instant. It's the same with the breathing breath, just like a mantra is used. Because it fills your mind with something that's non-operable. By non-operable, I mean, it's nothing that you're going to think about, oh, I'm breathing in, I'm breathing out, you know, that just happens automatically, you don't have to think about it. The mantra is a word that doesn't mean anything in particular, you know, it's a word that has kind of a resonant ending, has a little vibration to it. But other than that, any sound will do as well as any other sound. I know, sometimes people sell magic sounds, or meditation monitors and stuff, but any sound will do just as well. You use that sound of the mantra to replace thoughts that come into your head. So the mantra kind of fills up your mind space and crowds the thought out. The same with the breathing; when you take your deep breath, you're aware of being in a relaxed state, and you focus on being in touch with everything. Eventually, you don't need to be focused on your breath or anything else. You just live in that state all the time. So I don't do any kind of breathing exercises or anything. Thoughts About God  Interestingly enough, I was at a Unitarian Church, giving a program there. That church was just the venue, they had a less expensive room to rent than anybody else. And there were two theologians there that went along with that church. They were there while I was giving my talk and I asked them, I said, you two both have PhDs in theology, tell me, what are the attributes of God? Now, I said, I don't want dogma, I just want the general, what are the attributes of God. And this was a Unity Church, so they're into a little less dogma in that organization. So they spent a little bit of time in a conference talking to each other for about a minute or so and they came up with this list of attributes of God. And the reason I asked is, I compared that list to the attributes of the larger consciousness system. And I thought, I wonder how they're going to compare. And as it turned out, there was a one for one. Everything they had on their list was also an attribute of the larger consciousness system. [They said]  it's perfect, all-knowing, knows everything all the time. It's Supernatural. It's infinite. And well, my larger conscious system is not infinite. It's a natural system, not a supernatural system. Everything is a part of it. But it's not necessarily aware of everything all the time, it has to focus its attention on things. And it can be aware of a whole lot more than I can because it's got a lot bigger mind than I have. But it's also limited in that its number of bits is limited, it's finite. So it has to be efficient, in the way it does things. You can't just do things sloppily, if it's going to make a simulation, it's got to do that in an efficient way. It has constraints. It has a boundary, what's outside that boundary, have no idea. And we can't know because we're in it, we're conscious. We can't see an experience outside of what we are, you know? Yes, a lot of people are very religious, or at least they describe themselves as very religious. That also, like my Big TOE, they're not incompatible. I expected them to be incompatible because of my brush with religion had mostly been very dogmatic. But I found out that there are lots of people as individuals, they may belong to dogmatic religion, but they're not dogmatic at all. They've outgrown that. They don't have to go there, the details don't matter. Then they see the big picture. It's about being kind and caring about love. They have all the big picture stuff. And, you know, they're just not that interested in the details that aren't important to them. So in that sense, the larger consciousness system is the source of everything else. Advice for People Who Love to Study I was always very slow at almost everything, because I just rejected memorization. Memorizing how to get the right answers to me did not make sense. When I got to graduate school, I was a little envious of the guys that could write the right answer down in a few minutes, because I couldn't do that. After talking with them, I found out that they were envious of me because I could solve the problems that they couldn't [solve]. [For] the problems that they hadn't learned a methodology to get the right answer, they were stuck. Yeah. And I wasn't stuck. But I was very slow, and they weren't. They were very fast. So it had its advantages and disadvantages. It has to make sense, has to be derived from the bottom up, otherwise it's just not even worth doing it. So if your son's like that, then I'd tell him to persevere and just keep doing it. Don't learn to ‘Plugin' any more than you have to to get a decent grade. And if it doesn't make sense, then you don't understand it yet. Forgiveness is not easy to come by sometimes, but nine times outta ten we are the ones that are still suffering - not them.  We are the only ones hurting by holding on to it.  Sometimes all the universe needs to hear is that little whisper from us that says "I am willing".  Just asking the universe to show us what we need to let go of - to show us who we need to become in order to forgive - it sets things in motion.  In this episode, I discuss the experience that informed my song Left Over and encourage all of us to lay claim to our own personal freedom through the power of forgiveness.  Support the show
