Hey Truth Seekers! Welcome to another episode of Truth Wanted, hosted this week by Jon the Skeptick and @godlessengineer!Jon from Canada wants to know what the hosts think of pascal's wager? Pascal's wager isn't strictly a question for atheists, its also applicable to theists.Bernard from Canada, an expert on evolution, wants to know the name of a specific transitional fossil from human evolution.Julachak from NY wants to define what it means to be a mystic and I am going to try to sumarize it. Pray for me: You can read a lot of hoofoo and kind of woo sort of things and definitions about what it truly means to be a mystic, but really it really means in psychological terms is to make spiritual things philosophical and logical, then add science. Susan from AL made a post on Facebook referencing the Israel/Palestine conflict and was called anti-semitic and wants to know if maybe they went to far with their post.Sarah from IA had an experience where an elevator door opened with no one inside. The caller wants to know possible explanations for why this happened.Randi from New Zealand is concerned that religion has and will continue to slow science and medical advancement. It does sure seem to have a history of it.Katelyn from AL had an experience where their son was mis-diagnosed with cancer by a machine and the family claims the caller is disrespecting God by taking this “win” away from him.

Welcome to another episode of AxP. Matt and Jim are back together again!First up is Mr. Warlight, who claims to have a test for souls. Sadly, it involves desecrating a statue in a cemetery, so we're gonna move on.Mike in Texas has More (-mon) bad arguments for God. The universe is a big place, and therefore, a universe creating entity is possible. Matt and Jim point out that possibility is not probability, and this is as good an argument for gods as it is for butt monkeys. Just listen, it'll make sense.Next is Jasmine who's going to take us from the Bible to… entropy? Jim reminds us that the Bible is the claim, not the evidence, and gives our caller a quick lesson in thermodynamics. Matt points out that just because order came from chaos, that doesn't mean God did it.Brazilian Bruno is next, who takes a very long time to say… God could prevent evil, but doesn't, so HIS God is a neutral one. Jim gives a great Hell metaphor, and Matt tries to show Bruno where he's erred.Lightning round with Earl, who had a dream that convinced him God has updated… his own mind? We're not gonna waste time on dreams today.Justin in New York asks our hosts for tips on engaging in constructive debates in social settings. Matt and Jim both agree, pick your battles Justin, you don't need to die on every hill! Using the Socratic method is always a good start to any conversation Justin.Jonathan in AZ seems to want to back Matt into a corner by saying he's equated theism with believing other wacky stuff, flat earth, science denial, etc. He cites some calls from other past shows, but Matt is quick to shut down this attempt at verbal chicanery. Admiral Ackbar sniffed this out from 12 parsecs away.Next up is Monsters (not the kind with scary teeth). He believes in limited deities with tremendous power…? Concepts can have power, but that doesn't mean they actually exist. Spiderman is a great moral example, doesn't mean he's real.Anon in Texas doesn't see the harm in holding beliefs that aren't true, and doesn't see why it should matter. Beliefs inform actions, and a flawed process can lead to more dangerous views. Anon seems like a good guy, just a bit mixed up.Joe hasn't got a grasp on the burden of proof. Matt gives a courtroom analogy, and Jim explains the null hypothesis. I don't think Joe has passed the bar exam.AJ grew up as a JW, and is seeking advice on coming out as an atheist. Matt advises a cost/benefit approach to these conversations, and Jim offers a few resources, like the Secular Therapy Project.Paul wants to talk about how energy shows the possibility of God, but also doesn't think it matters. You waited two hours for this? Finally Tim wants to know why Jesus didn't write anything down! Dad did! Matt is less concerned about the late Bronze Age, and asks why isn't he contributing now? We list a few absurdities from Christian theology, and give Tim a quick e-hug.That's the show today folks, hasta la vista!

As we head into this Father's Day weekend, we wanted to first stop and appreciate all of the dads out there. It takes a lot of work to play that important role in a child's life and Nancy has a story she'll share about her wonderful dad. Now, let's talk about financial planning. This conversation takes on an important question that we all have to evaluate in different aspects of life: Is the risk worth the reward? We have to go back about 400 years to what might be the first instance of someone truly analyzing outcomes. That man was Pascal, a brilliant seventeenth-century philosopher that developed the idea that belief in God would provide an infinite upside but if you don't believe it would only provide a finite upside. Although the term hadn't been created yet, Pascal had complete a cost-benefit analysis to determine that there's much to gain by believing than not. This became known as Pascal's wager over time and created the framework that's used in all facets of life as we weigh potential outcomes from our decisions. So how does this tie into planning? Well assume that you've accumulated enough wealth after several decades of savings and investing. Should keep trying to grow the nest egg with risk or shift to safer investments to protect your capital. Using the Pascal's wager, we'll run through potential scenarios that could play out with each option on the table. We'll also use a couple famous quotes from notable financial professionals tie into this idea of Pascal's wager. Check out the full episode or use the timestamps below to hear a specific segment. 1:56 – Pascal's wager 4:27 – Applying this to retirement planning 7:53 – If you can dream it… 8:55 – Warren Buffet famous quote 10:29 – Risk 12:12 – Summarizing the discussion   For more, visit us online at http://flemingfinancialservices.com

Maybe compose your thoughts in an email?Jeury in NY is up next. He is calling to ask how to deal with conversations when there is no point. Our hosts explain that you need patience and may have to know when to walk away and regroup. Oscar from IN is asking why Matt is an atheist and not agnostic. Matt was a southern baptist and was trying to demonstrate the belief in god and found his way out. There didn’t seem to be a point so on to more callers.Gerard in CT is calling in to challenge Matt on believing as many true things and as few false things as possible. The caller goes on to demonstrate he wants to believe as many true things as possible. Daniel from CA is saying that Christians don’t investigate the bible and points out the bible is a historical text. The hosts flex their Bible knowledge chops to point out it’s not historically accurate. Check out this call for a fun conversation about the Bible and Christians.Alex in VA is up next. His father is dying and although Alex isn't a believer he asks if it's ethical to let his father think he is still a believer. The hosts relate stories of their loved ones and give some great advice in this call. Who is chopping onions in here...Angel in NC has moved in with some atheists and has questions for us today. Angel is questioning her faith and uses a form of Pascal's Wager to stay a believer. A great call destructing Pascal's Wager and "Christianinanity" ensues. Justin in MN says the study of comets disproves evolution. Oh, boy, 12,000 year old comets prove a young earth? The hosts point out Justin is cherry picking data and short period comets aren’t the only types of comets. Mark in RI says you can be justified in believing that a miracle is an explanation for an event. Matt points out that you can’t appeal to the supernatural until it's been found to exist and could have explanatory power. Luke in GA wants to tell us that some people haven't received the holy ghost but anyone can. Apparently you just have to “die unto yourself” and take up a cross. Ugh. And moving on.The last call of the episode, Michael in San Diego, wants to know why they don’t believe in Spinoza's god. Matt points out there is no evidence for it and he doesn't care what Spinoza or Einstein believed. Thanks for tuning in folks! Check out Jim in other ACA shows. How can Pascal's Wager possibly work if there are so many religions to choose from? Also, how is it supposed to work when multiple religions offer infinite value? The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. With the help of various guests, I defend three pillars of the Catholic Christian worldview: (1) the God of classical theism exists, (2) Jesus is our Messiah and Lord, and (3) He founded the Catholic Church. Atheists are waking up to the fact that religion is available. Coleman Hughes with John McWhorter notes Dr. King's reliance on religion. Bret Weinstein according to Alister McGrath thinks we almost need a new religion. Auguste Comte tried exactly this but if we compare it to what Joseph Smith did it was a failure. Why? How does Pascal's Wager work? Should people find it persuasive or is it merely an attempt at evangelistic manipulation? How does one answer the "Many God's" objection and the intellectual dishonesty objections? Dr. Michael Rota updates the wager and argues that it succeeds in motivating commitment to a devout Christian life. Also, I share a clip from the Capturing Christianity podcast where Dr. Rota explains how to respond to the multiverse objection to fine-tuning. We place a strong emphasis on the first pillar, defending classical theism, drawing upon the work of Thomistic philosopher Dr. Edward Feser and many others. Fox News host David Webb accused American Liberals of “turning climate change into their religion” last week. An interesting thought. Pascal’s Wager came to mind while Ashby and I were exploring it on the podcast. It’s a 17th century philosophical argument about the existence of god advanced by the french polymath Blaise Pascal. The gist: humans bet with their lives that god either does or does not exist. He argued that a rational person should live as though god exists. If they’re wrong, they avoided sin for no reason. But if they’re right, the potential gain (an eternity in heaven) is infinite. I think this logic holds for climate change. If we’re wrong and the planet isn’t dying, we’ll have cleaned it up for no reason. A specific loss. But if we’re right, the potential gain is infinite. To me, it’s an easy choice. Check out the podcast to hear us talk through the logic in more detail. As always, we answered questions from listeners. Write with a question and we’ll answer it in the next episode! HBO’s show succession features a plot line where investors from a Canadian pension fund issued the most creative and aggressive swear words in the entire series. Is this realistic? I thought Canadians were nice. I saw that someone tweeted candid, negative comments about a startup and caught a lot of flak. Why is outward positivism such an entrenched norm in Silicon Valley? Why do we keep calling it a risk free rate when there is no risk free rate? If someone forwarded this to you, don’t miss the next one! Episode 12 kicks off a short, 2-part series on Pascal's Wager. I remember hearing the wager years ago thinking to myself it sounded pretty reasonable. If Christianity is true, there's tons to gain, and if it's false, very little to lose. That seems to make it pretty rational to commit to God. It wasn't until years later that I heard good objections to the Wager--the kind of objections that really made me doubt its validity. Fortunately for us, we have an expert on Pascal's Wager, Dr. Michael Rota, to help us think through this very interesting argument. He's written a book entitled Taking Pascal's Wager where he updates the argument and defends it against the biggest objections. If sound, Dr. Rota's version of the Wager makes it reasonable to commit to God even if you're just 50% sure of his existence, thus, lowering the bar for Natural Theology. Definitely give this one a listen! Website: www.capturingchristianity.com Patreon: www.patreon.com/capturingchristianity

On Blaise Pascal's Pensées (1670). Is it rational to have religious faith? You're likely familiar with "Pascal's Wager," but our wretchedness is such that we can't simply choose to believe and won't be argued into it. Pascal thinks Christianity is the only religion to accurately describe the human condition.

#99: Should You Fear Roko’s Basilisk? “Before you die, you see Roko’s Basilisk. It's like the videotape in The Ring.” Can Artificial Intelligence predict if people helped or tried to stop it from becoming sentient? This episode Cellar Door Skeptics tackle all angles of Rosko’s Basilisk Theory and what it means for AI and our future. They talk about their perceived notions on whether AI could predict humans who have not helped it become sentient. This dilemma falls in line with Pascal's Wager and the team takes a stance where this should be a concern or if we can feel comfortable dismissing this as a crazy conspiracy. Follow the episode as it delves into AI philosophy and the team takes rabbit hole after rabbit hole toward the reality that we live in. Will you take the Red Pill or the Blue Pill or should you just flush the pills and succumb to logic? #RokosBasilisk #ArtificialIntelligence #LessWrong #Philosophy #PascalsWager Subscribe: http://www.spreaker.com/user/cellardoorskeptics Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CellarDoorSkeptics RSS Feed: https://www.spreaker.com/user/8326690/episodes/feed iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/cellar-door-skeptics/id1044088575?mt=2&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 Website: http://cellardoorskeptics.com Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/cellar-door-skeptics Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cellardoorskeptics PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/CellarDoorSkeptics Intro Music: http://aloststateofmind.com/ Links ------ http://lesswrong.com/ https://wiki.lesswrong.com/wiki/Roko%27s_basilisk http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/bitwise/2014/07/roko_s_basilisk_the_most_terrifying_thought_experiment_of_all_time.html http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Roko's_basilisk

You've probably heard of Pascal's Wager: That it's rational to believe in God, because if you're wrong it's no big deal, but if you're right then the payoff is huge. This episode features philosopher Amanda Askell, who (though not religious herself) argues that it's much trickier to rebut Pascal's Wager than most people think. Amanda and Julia also discuss how to handle other decisions where a risk has very low probability but would matter a lot if it came true -- should you round them down to zero? Does it matter how measurable the risk is? And should you take into account the chance you're being scammed?

Pascal's wager is one of those things that you find either ridiculous or intriguing. There appears to be no middle ground. But most people yearn for some form of immortality and the wager is one of the few things which have a chance of providing it, and perhaps it shouldn't be dismissed so easily. Also Pascal's wager is frequently applied as a thought experiment with no practical application. Viewing the wager from the standpoint of a believer is far more productive.

Gold digger Kanye is made fun of for a decent amount of time and then the dark head of science reared itself, to talk about the Appendix? It was cool, trust us. Next Pascal's wager was perverted with climate change and the funky logic will be published on the blog for all to critique. (Hint: it involves baking.) Plus, what movies (and other things) would serve as a litmus test when deciding on a potential life partner? What might liking or not liking a certain film, book, or TV series tell you about a person, and whether or not the relationship would work? Religious Epistemology, Contextualism, and Pragmatic Encroachment

Alan Hájek (Australian National University) gives a talk for the New Insights seminar series on 21st May 2015. Abstract: A number of prominent authors—Levi, Spohn, Gilboa, Seidenfeld, and Price among them—hold that rational agents cannot assign subjective probabilities to their options while deliberating about which one they will choose. This has been called the "deliberation crowds out prediction" thesis. The thesis, if true, has important ramifications for many aspects of Bayesian epistemology, decision theory, and game theory. The stakes are high. The thesis is not true—or so I maintain. After some scene-setting, I will precisify and rebut several of the main arguments for the thesis. I will defend the rationality of assigning probabilities to options while deliberating about them: deliberation welcomes prediction. I will also consider application of the thesis, and its denial, to Pascal's Wager.

Blaise Pascal was a 17th century Christian philosopher and mathematician who said that we all bet our life on the existence of God. So, you are better off believing in God because you've everything to gain if it's true and little to lose if it's not. But you've plenty to lose if you bet on God not existing and it turns out that He does. Kevin Moore is a young philosopher whose new book 'Untrumpable' revisits Pascal's classic argument in terms of 'wisdom'. He makes the case that Atheism is a foolish bet and we ought to live as if God existed. He even says his argument makes the best sense of Psalm 14 (The fool has said in his heart "there is no God"). Norman Bacrac, of the Conway Hall Ethical Society disagrees with Kevin and says that believing in God wouldn't make him change the way he lives as an atheist anyway. We begin by hearkening back to last week's episode and imagine Pascal as Descartes' wingman in a door-to-door campaign to convince us to believe in God. Whereas Descartes tries to prove that God exists, Pascal simply argues that believing in God is the most logical choice (assuming you want to avoid eternal damnation). We then examine various arguments for and against Pascal's wager, including some submitted by our Twitter followers. All this and more on the latest episode of Philosophize This!
