Yi Xu is the director of XR Technology at OPPO, a leading Android smartphone company that's innovating in AR with their Air Glass product line.Prior to OPPO, Yi received a PhD in computer science, specializing in computer vision. He utilized these skills as computer scientist and engineer at GE Global Research and CapsoVision, working on a number of projects revolving around 3D computer vision. He then worked as a technical leader at JD. com, shaping the roadmap for their mobile augmented reality research.Yi then joined OPPO in 2019 as the lab manager of Mixed Reality Lab, and quickly rose to be the company wide director of XR Technology. In this role, Yi remains close to the product and technology as he leads the development of Oppo's AR and MR product lines. In this conversation, Yi describes his early interest in 3D and computer vision, and how this led to a passion for XR. Yi goes on to describe why OPPO, a major Android OEM, is so interested in developing smart glasses and similar technology as well as the use cases that he sees as killer apps for consumer smart glasses. Yi stresses OPPO's focus on design, so we go in depth on comfort, aesthetics, and requirements for smart glasses that consumers will actually wear. Hopes are rising for the commercialisation of batteries that are boosted by the inclusion of platinum and palladium following the engagement of an innovation centre to drive the next generation of battery chemistries to market. Collaboration between the Florida International University-linked Lion Battery Technologies of the US and the Battery Innovation Center of Newberry, Indiana, will include creating prototypes for commercialisation consideration next year. Lion's target is to develop batteries with specific energies that are 20% to 100% higher than current technologies while matching or beating present cycle lives. Established four years ago by the Toronto- and New York-listed Platinum Group Metals and the Johannesburg-listed Anglo American Platinum, Lion has been developing the next-generation battery technology using platinum and palladium since 2019. Anglo Platinum has the Mogalakwena, Amandelbult and Mototolo platinum group metals (PGM) operations in South Africa's Bushveld Complex, and the North American Platinum Group Metals, headed by CEO Frank Hallam, is the discoverer and operator of a bulk underground PGM deposit in South Africa's Waterberg, which is being developed with joint venture partners Impala Platinum, Mnombo Wethu Consultants, Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security, and Hanwa. Successful commercialisation would mean that the extension of PGMs beyond use in the exhaust systems of internal combustion engines and ensuring the zero-emission advantage of fuel cell electric vehicles, to also making an energy-enhancing and weight-reducing entry into battery electric vehicles. Since inception, the Lion team has focused on the development of proprietary lithium sulphur technology and enhancing the performance of existing commercial lithium-ion or NMC chemistries. Lion has a sponsored research agreement with Florida International University, including exclusive rights to intellectual property developed and will lead the commercialisation efforts. On top of that, the Battery Innovation Center will now collaborate with commercial enterprises, universities, government agencies, and industry leaders to focus on the rapid development, testing, and commercialisation of safe, reliable, and lightweight energy storage systems for commercial and defence customers. The mission of the Battery Innovation Center is to accelerate innovation in the field of battery technology by providing access to the entire spectrum of research and development to commercialisation, including low volume production, in a single 40 000 square foot facility. Under an agreed scope of work, the Battery Innovation Center – which works with clients including BrightVolt, Rolls Royce, DuPont, Valvoline, GE Global Research, and Cummins – is to conduct independent small-scale and large-scale trials to validate Lion's PGMs-based based electrode composition, slurry, and films in lithium-sulphur and lithium-ion coin and pouch cells. Research at Lion is led by Dr Bilal El-Zahab and Dr Wan Si Tang is the advanced battery manufacturing team leader at the Battery Innovation Center. “We're excited to collaborate and support the endeavour for next generation lithium-related battery chemistries toward higher technology readiness levels," Tang stated in a release to Mining Weekly.

Prior to joining McAfee, he dedicated more than two decades to senior technical leadership positions related to cybersecurity at Intel Corporation where he was an Intel Fellow. He has written numerous technical papers and books and holds 27 U.S. patents. He earned his bachelor's degree in computer science from North Carolina State University., Jeanette ManfraAssistant Director for Cybersecurity, Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Ms. Manfra leads the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mission of protecting and strengthening the nation’s critical infrastructure from cyber threats. Previously, Ms. Manfra served as Assistant Secretary for the Office of Cybersecurity and Communications (CS&C) for the National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) before the agency became CISA on November 16, 2018. Prior to this position, Ms. Manfra served as Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Cybersecurity and Director for Strategy, Policy, and Plans for NPPD. Ms. Manfra also served as Senior Counselor for Cybersecurity to the Secretary of Homeland Security and Director for Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity on the National Security Council staff at the White House. At DHS, she held multiple positions in the Cybersecurity Division, including advisor for the Assistant Secretary for Cybersecurity and Communications and Deputy Director, Office of Emergency Communications, during which time she led the Department’s efforts in establishing the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network. Before joining DHS, Jeanette served in the U.S. Army as a communications specialist and a Military Intelligence Officer. , Matt TurekProgram Manager, Information Innovation Office, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Dr. Matt Turek joined DARPA’s Information Innovation Office (I2O) as a program manager in July 2018. His research interests include computer vision, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and their application to problems with significant societal impact. Prior to his position at DARPA, Turek was at Kitware, Inc., where he led a team developing computer vision technologies. His research focused on multiple areas, including large scale behavior recognition and modeling; object detection and tracking; activity recognition; normalcy modeling and anomaly detection; and image indexing and retrieval. Turek has made significant contributions to multiple DARPA and Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) efforts and has transitioned large scale systems for operational use. Before joining Kitware, Turek worked for GE Global Research, conducting research in medical imaging and industrial inspection. Turek holds a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a Master of Science in electrical engineering from Marquette University, and a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Clarkson University. Afterwards, he was awarded a National Research Council postdoctoral fellowship to work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Before joining the faculty at Rensselaer, Dan conducted materials science research at GE Global Research. Dan was the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award, as well as a the International Metallographic Contest Jacquet-Lucas Award. Experience designers and researchers are working on their most ambitious challenge yet that represents a new frontier in user interfaces: creating a constellation of systems, machines, and people — including wearable gadgets, tablets, smart phones, and appliances — that can communicate with one another in an autonomous fashion. We are constantly adding new functions to gadgets and new devices to the ecosystem without much thought as to their totality or cumulative complexity. In the coming era of ubiquitous sensors and miniaturized mobile computing, designers need to think about how to weave the digital world into our lives at work so seamlessly that we don’t even notice. Already we’re seeing a groundswell of new technologies that insinuate themselves seamlessly into users’ personal lives like the voice and gesture-controlled Xbox, but this is just the beginning. At GE, we want to apply the same embedded intelligence to the world of big iron and people at work to create disruptive experiences, not just products or interfaces, by connecting people with people and people with machines and data. In this talk you will learn how GE Global Research is pursuing new opportunities in analytics visualization, the future of field engineering, wearables, robotics, semiautonomous vehicles, and agents that can be applied to the industrial Internet. Bio: Arnold Lund, Ph.D., CUXP, is the connected experience technology leader and human-systems interaction lab manager at GE Global Research. He was previously the principal user experience lead in Microsoft’s Server and Management Studios and the principal director of user experience in Microsoft’s IT organization. Prior to that, he worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Ameritech, US West Advanced Technologies, and Sapient. His research has been recognized by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), and his work on metrics for assessing user experiences and predicting successful products continues to be influential. Lund is a fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), and served on the HFES Executive Council. He has been elected to the prestigious ACM SIGCHI Academy and recently received the SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award. He has long been engaged in human computer interaction (HCI) and human factors standards, and in the area of accessibility and emerging technology. He chaired the HFES Institute and oversaw the HFES-200 standard and its approval as an ANSI standard. He is a certified user experience professional and served as president of the board of directors for the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE). Lund has published widely in R&D management and on research in natural user interfaces, and has more than 20 patents. He has taught user-centered design at Northwestern University and the University of Washington.
