Yi Xu is the director of XR Technology at OPPO, a leading Android smartphone company that's innovating in AR with their Air Glass product line.Prior to OPPO, Yi received a PhD in computer science, specializing in computer vision. He utilized these skills as computer scientist and engineer at GE Global Research and CapsoVision, working on a number of projects revolving around 3D computer vision. He then worked as a technical leader at JD. com, shaping the roadmap for their mobile augmented reality research.Yi then joined OPPO in 2019 as the lab manager of Mixed Reality Lab, and quickly rose to be the company wide director of XR Technology. In this role, Yi remains close to the product and technology as he leads the development of Oppo's AR and MR product lines. In this conversation, Yi describes his early interest in 3D and computer vision, and how this led to a passion for XR. Yi goes on to describe why OPPO, a major Android OEM, is so interested in developing smart glasses and similar technology as well as the use cases that he sees as killer apps for consumer smart glasses. Yi stresses OPPO's focus on design, so we go in depth on comfort, aesthetics, and requirements for smart glasses that consumers will actually wear. We also take a tangent to discuss how generative AI, both textual and visual, might help form the future of AR interfaces. About Anthony While in graduate school in Toronto, I fell into a bad depression. I couldn't think and I couldn't concentrate, while also struggling with debt and deep concerns about two forthcoming PhD exams. These exams took place in front of committees who grill you about hundreds of books that you are supposed to have covered. But at the time I could hardly get out of bed, let alone read a sentence of complicated philosophy. When I did get out of bed, I avoided the problem of studying for these exams by learning card tricks. And that's when I discovered the “holy grain” of card tricks: The memorized deck. I didn't think it would for my muddled brain, but 15 minutes later, I had an entire deck memorized. From that point on, I knew I could learn and memorize anything. And that has proved true time and time again. Since then, I've taught memory techniques around the world, shared memory-based meditation strategies at a TEDx event and written many books and courses for my community members. Most importantly, I have used the techniques to help me learn about coping with clinical depression. These science-based strategies have been documented in my book, The Victorious Mind. Since releasing that guide, my teaching activities have involved extending my memory training to offer courses in reading comprehension and a new, live-action memory improvement game. Everything I do to help others is geared towards better living through better memory because memory is the core of everything we are and everything we do. “The biggest problems of tomorrow will not be a lack of jobs but a shortage of humans to take advantage of all of the opportunities technology will offer.” – Byron Reese   I opened the show with Freddie Mercury's intro to Hammer to Fall from back in 1986 at Live Aid. I used did this because AI (artificial intelligence) is beginning to dip its toes into art and it is doing a pretty good job at it. But I ask: can a non-human create art? Is art only an expression of the human experience? I would argue - maybe? There are already AIs out there writing, composing and creating original content. We know where this is going, just by looking at where it has gone. We started out a few years ago with bland computer animated cartoons and now take the Movie Moana (I have a little girl... so yes, I've watched Moana a few times)and simply look at the quality of the images in that movie. They are lifelike. You can't tell that it is an environment completely created from 1s and 0s. So if we can expect the exponential growth of tech to continue, where will be we in 50 years? 25 years? 10 years? Will the next Ansel Adams need to traverse dangerous terrain to capture a beautiful landscape or will AI simply create it? Is art simply how something makes you feel or is it the experience of the artist? Who knows, but these are the questions we'll have to ask ourselves very soon.    Today's guest is Byron Reese - an entrepreneur, a futurist, a Ted Talks alum, and author of The 4th Age - a great book about the dawning of what Byron deems the 4th age of human development - one of the best that was sent to me and I get a lot of books from guests. SO I highly recommend checking it out. Byron is a rare optimist when it comes to advancements in AI and it was refreshing to hear his take on the coming age of our robot overlords!   We chat about the meaning of consciousness, the Fermi paradox and the future of the human species. It was a deep and fun talk with a brilliant guest.
