With over three decades in the attractions industry, his journey began at Geauga Lake in Ohio, where he started as a taffy puller at the age of 15. Over the years, Mike has worked with industry giants like Six Flags and Great Wolf Lodge, honing his leadership skills and shaping his management style. In this interview, Mike talks about embracing history, shifting culture, and the importance of mentors. Embracing history "One of the things I've seen most effective through any of the organizations that I've worked in is when you're able to connect the employee and their benefits to the ultimate goal." Mike emphasizes the importance of connecting the past with the present to foster a sense of continuity and pride among employees. By acknowledging and celebrating the history of Adventureland Resort, Mike believes it creates a deeper connection with both employees and guests, enhancing the overall experience. Shifting culture "Keeping [employees] in a positive mindset, giving them the right accolades when necessary, that's a big part of the strategy here is just that acknowledgment and kind of immediate reward." Mike emphasizes the significance of fostering a positive work culture by recognizing and rewarding employees for their contributions. He believes that by prioritizing employee satisfaction and well-being, it translates into better guest experiences and ultimately drives business success. The importance of mentors "There's no way you would have been able to come up with your leadership style on your own." Mike underscored the pivotal role of mentors in shaping leadership styles and navigating challenges in the attractions industry. He highlighted the value of seeking guidance from experienced professionals who can offer insights, support, and feedback. Through mentorship, leaders can refine their skills, make informed decisions, and cultivate successful careers. As 2023 draws to a close and Zoo Logic approaches its 300th episode, we look back at a remarkable institution that launched or strengthened the careers of many zoological professionals and leaders still very active today. In 1970, the second SeaWorld park opened in a most unlikely place, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio on the shores of Geauga Lake. The purpose of building an inland marine animal park in the Midwest was to draw upon a radius of huge population centers located within about a 6-hour drive of the location. Sadly, the park could never escape the realities of a seasonal park in a region prone to spectacular winter weather. However, despite its brief 30-year history, the blue collar zoological park left an indelible mark on the community and the professionals that passed through her gates. Some of those that knew her well discuss the unique park and the lessons learned while working there. Animal Care Software

Coaster Nerd Con, or CNC23, took place from July 6-14, 2023. This is the annual trek where Matt and two friends take an epic journey to ride roller coasters, debate the best park food and experience the best the industry has to offer. This year, Josh got to join them at their first park, Six Flags Great America. From there, the trio went to Lost Island Theme Park, Adventureland, Worlds of Fun, Silver Dollar City, Frontier City, Six Flags Over Texas, SeaWorld San Antonio, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. As usual, there were lessons learned along the way. In this episode, Matt and Josh talk about the “things that matter” to the park-going experience. Enthusiasm matters For those who know Jeffrey Siebert, Park President at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, you know that he has enthusiasm to spare. In fact, he calls himself an “enthusiast who gets to run a theme park,” and that enthusiasm shows from the look of the park (amazing), the interactions with the team (hospitable and friendly), and the fact that everything was open. His energy is infectious, and that has an incredibly positive impact on the entire operation. We also ran into team members at other parks, such as Lost Island, who leveled up their own enthusiasm. The gentleman who greeted us for the dark ride and the chef who checked on us as we ate lunch both positively enhanced our experience because of their enthusiasm and positive demeanor. Recognition matters There are so many ways to recognize a team member and so many great accomplishments to recognize them for! As we learned from Tony and Gina Claassen, there is something that Silver Dollar City does that combines recognition with a way to immortalize loyal team members. Disney has the windows on Main Street, and Silver Dollar City has customized, themed posters that are placed throughout the park that recognize team members that have been with the company for 25 years. The best part is that Gina and Tony got to help design their posters and had a choice of where to put them. Next time you're at SDC, see if you can find them! Environment matters The look, the feel, the emotion, the smells, the music… it all plays into the environment you are stepping into and will be the foundation of an immersive experience. Worlds of Fun has done considerable retheming and upgrades to the park, including paint and new facades. Lost Island was clean, incredibly well-themed, and paid attention to the little details that really made a difference. Props must also be given to the Bamboozler (Round-Up) at Worlds of Fun. The internal paint job (which one could argue wasn't needed for the ride to function) created a visually interesting and attractive experience not just for the riders but the guests on the midway as well. History matters Many rides and attractions have had lives before landing in their current home. Parks also move things all the time to accommodate expansion and new experiences. It truly enhances the experience when a park takes the time to acknowledge and document the journey that a ride has taken to get to its current home. A notable piece of history for Matt is the Grand Carousel at Worlds of Fun, which used to be at Geauga Lake in Aurora, OH. Geauga Lake was Matt's home park growing up, and there is a very good chance he rode it when he visited with his family. Sharing the history can develop and strengthen the emotional connection of the experience. Activities matter As much as the CNC crew loves roller coasters, it was really fun to discover, observe and participate in a variety of activities that bring people together and let them have fun or challenge themselves in a non-traditional way (for a theme park). Lost Island had a number of activities that allowed guests to challenge their minds as well as their body. Silver Dollar City staged a good ‘ol fashioned water balloon fight, and Fiesta Texas has a state-of-the-art gaming center. For more on the CNC23 trip, look for #CNC23 on Facebook and Instagram. In today's episode we'll be discussing Dominator at Kings Dominion in Doswell, VA. Though Twisted Timbers and Intimidator 305 get most of the attention at Kings Dominion, Dominator is still a major crowd pleaser at the park. The attraction is the longest floorless coaster in the world, and features the 3rd-tallest vertical loop in the U.S. But most importantly, Dominator also has a fascinating history that involves a defunct and infamous amusement park. Today we not only discuss Dominator, but the controversial and unfortunate downfall of Geauga Lake. Twitter: twitter.com/airtimetraveler Instagram: instagram.com/airtimetraveler

Listen to find where Nick's love for Mantis started and to hear his experiences of visiting Geauga Lake before it's closure. Thanks for listening!

“A rising tide lifts all boats.” Today’s motivational Monday quote is actually more of an aphorism. The source of this saying is not 100% known, but it is said to have been a part of the Chinese language for hundreds of years. While this phrase is often used in the context of economic development or politics, it actually can be quite appropriate to the realm of location based entertainment. Let’s first look at a man named Walt in Southern California. No, not Walt Disney, rather Walter Knott, founder of Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA. Knott’s Berry Farm really started in the mid 1920s, when the Knott Family would sell their famous jams and jellies at a roadside stand. Over the next few decades, the farm would grow to include the famous Chicken Dinner restaurant and a ghost town to entertain guests. It was certainly a well known attraction in the Los Angeles area. Then, in the mid 50’s another Walt, yes, this time Mr. Disney, scouts out nearby Anaheim for his own park. This, of course, started the infamous Walter War that put Knott at odds with Disney for decades! Just kidding, in fact, Walt Disney and Walter Knott actually had a fairly friendly relationship, with both Walts visiting each others parks. It’s said Walt Disney even got some ideas for how to more heavily theme attractions and develop the queues at Disneyland by watching the progress of designer Bud Hurlbut’s Calico Mine Train attraction. Even with the opening of Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm saw continued success. In 1980, Knott’s even put adds in local newspapers wishing Disneyland a happy 25th anniversary to go along with their 60th. Guests to Disneyland would often plan trips to Knott’s and vice-versa. Even to this day, a theme park trip to Southern California can include Disneyland, Universal Studios and Knott’s Berry Farm. In Aurora, OH, for many years the theme park Geauga Lake was a friendly neighbor to the second SeaWorld Park, Sea World of Ohio. In fact, the park was built next to Geauga Lake in an effort to drum up excitement and visitors for both parks. Later, Six Flags decided to buy both parks and combine them to form a mega park, which it then proceeded to sell to Cedar Fair, who later closed all parks and demolished the land in what has to be one of the most depressing episodes in theme park history. Even in Orlando, the addition of Walt Disney World was initially seen as a big plus to nearby Cypress Gardens. Even Disney got in on the action, welcoming Universal Studios Florida to the Orlando area, stating “What’s good for tourism and entertainment is good for Central Florida. With the Eisner era, competition certainly heated up and became more cutthroat, but at the end of the day, when one park in Central Florida succeeds, all of them can reap the benefits. Without WDW, we wouldn’t have SeaWorld or Universal Orlando. While both parks would certainly love to steal market share from the other, I would find it very hard to believe that either would wish the other completely gone. Truly, a rising tide lifts all boats. What do you think? Do you think cordial neighborly relationships benefit all entertainment enterprises, or is the cutthroat, all-business approach the more economically viable? Let us know at connect@mainentrancecast.com
